Beginner Manga Recommendations for Japanese Learners

It's time, you've done your due diligence in studying. Now it's time to jump into native material. But where to start? Here are a few manga series that I've read that I think would be a reasonable place for a Japanese learner to start their immersion journey.

Disclaimer: I haven't read every series, and the manga that's interesting to me might not be interesting to you. We also all encounter different words as we go along our language learning journeys. A series that I find relatively easy might have you looking up every other word. The trick is to not get discouraged and just keep on pushing through! As with everything, it gets easier the more you practice.

消えた初恋 - アルコ＆ひねくれ渡: This BL series follows a group of four friends and their experiences with love in high school (it also has a drama adaptation that I highly recommend! Available to watch for free on Viki). This series is so silly and just a fun time. The art has great visual gags and it's definitely a series where you can sit down and not even realize that suddenly you've gone through an entire volume and why didn't you buy more of this series to start with? It has furigana on everything, but the characters do speak pretty casually, so there's some slang and less standard language. This series is completed with nine volumes.

佐々木と宮野 - 春園ショウ: This is another sweet BL about Miyano, a high school first year, who catches the eye of an upperclassman, Sasaki. After asking to borrow Miyano's book, the two bond over a shared enjoyment of BL manga. The vocabulary is pretty simple in this one as well, but it does use quite a bit of otaku slang, which can be difficult if you've never encountered it before. It has furigana on everything, though! This series is ongoing with nine volumes and also has a spin off series titled 平野と鍵浦 which is also ongoing with four volumes.

月刊少女野崎くん - 椿いづみ: The first manga I ever read in Japanese! This series follows a high schooler, Sakura, as she confesses to her crush and classmate, Nozaki. However, Nozaki thinks that Sakura is just a fan of his shoujo manga series, and recruits her to be his assistant. This series is so enjoyably silly with a wonderful cast of characters that absolutely steal the show. There's a bit of vocabulary specific to the process of making manga, but it isn't too overwhelming. There's also plenty of casual speech and some great moments that can't quite come out in translation (bonus fact: I actually wrote a paper on this series and how humor is translated in one of my university linguistics class). It also has furigana on everything. It's ongoing with fifteen volumes.

加瀬さんシリーズ - 高嶋ひろみ: This adorable little GL series follows two high school aged girls, popular and athletic Kase and the shy gardener Yamada, as their relationship develops over their high school years. The vocabulary in this one is relatively simple with the exception of some more specific words, but those tend to pop up time and time again. This one doesn't have furigana but I think it's a great introduction to readying manga without furigana! This series is completed with five volumes, but there's an ongoing sequel series called　山田と加瀬さん that currently has three volumes released.

ささやくように恋を唄う - 竹嶋えく: This is a music based GL series about a high school first year, Kino, who tells an upperclassman, Nagi, that she loves her music. Nagi, however, misunderstands this as Kino confessing her love for her. The story follows both the relationship between Kino and Nagi as well as the trials and tribulations of Nagi's band. This is another one without furigana, but the vocabulary tends to be simple enough that I think it's still pretty accessible. It's ongoing with eight current volumes.

かけた月とドーナッツ - 雨水汐: Our last GL, this follows two coworkers, Uno and Satou, and their blossoming relationship in a society that pushes conformity and marriage on women. I really loved the way this series depicted coming into one's sexuality as an adult. Another one without furigana, but simple vocabulary regardless. A possible difficulty with this one might be the office vocabulary, though. This series is completed with four volumes.

Well... Depends on the AU but I usually go like this:

How I see them ↑

Oliver is a quiet kid and probably autistic. He doesn't have many friends, but he loves animals, especially birds, and definitely prefers them over people.

He has trouble speaking; he can't regulate the volume of his voice (he always speaks lower than average) and doesn't have good diction.

He lacks a social filter and often says morbid things about his special interests. He's not very expressive either, which makes other kids think he must be a psycho or something. :')

Fukase is a chaotic ray of sunshine but tries to pretend he's cool. He has kind of lost himself in an ironic, sassy persona he created to appear more confident.

He can only focus on things he finds interesting.

Although he can be annoying and clueless, he loves his friends more than anything in the world.

He's very expressive and performative and likes to be the class clown.

Secretly, he loves cute and "hyperfeminine" things and can't live without them.

When they first met, all Fukase knew about Oliver was that he was a weird guy. But when he actually interacted with Ollie, he realized he was pretty nice and that they shared some common interests.

In the beginning, Oliver was afraid that Fukase was only getting close to him to later make fun of him, but Fuka became his #1 defender.

Kase finds Oliver's unfiltered nature kind of comforting because he knows that when Oliver says he likes him and his interests, he really means it.

Fuka is really loud, but he police himself around Oliver because Ollie hates loud noises. He usually talks like his soft voicebank near him.

They're always hanging out at a treehouse that used to belong to Ruby and Hio, where they make their world domination plans. They play pretend that Point is a baby they're taking care of. Fukase is always at Oliver's house, and at this point, he’s become an honorary annoying little brother to Hio.

They like to go outside together a lot to: explore new places, collect mushrooms and berries in the woods, build sandcastles, set random things on fire, and collect lost objects. (They use the lost objects to build trinkets.)

In fantasy settings, I usually give Fukase floating powers that allow him to make Oliver float too when they hold hands.

I also imagine Oliver as a Frankenstein monster-like creature with detachable body parts, like his eye, which he sometimes lends to Fukase when he can't go out with him. (It can magically see outside his head... don’t ask me how.)

Their relationship is not exactly romantic at least not when they're 13, but they just had a little sparkle that became more serious later on when they're 15/16

I like an variety of olikase flavours but that's my default one:) I usually make them platonic except in age up AUs

But sometimes I like to make them have a crush on each other hold hands awkwardly and blush XD

Hi! You got lucky that today is the day I check my inbox lol. So. For comp-sci: - CS50X from Harvard is a public avaiable course on youtube I'd 100% recommend. This gives you all the basics you need to understand how coding and pcs in general works. (I had comp sci in my university course)

- Freecodecamp is a website full of FREE tutorials on several programming language. Advice: learn python. You will understand later on.

- The rest really depends on what you actually want to learn and why - each programming language has its own purpose and application. But here is the catcher: if you plan to do osint it heavily depends on where you live. I'm in Europe, so it means I'm under GDPR, therefore I must abid to stricter regulations than a US OSINT analyst. A lot of data that might be considered public domain in the US(big one: conviction records) are not in europe, and you won't be able to access it unless you are a registered private investigator at least (but in my case it's rare that I go after people, that's not a part of any task I might encounter at work). Not only that, but a lot of the avaiable tools are designed to work only with specific countries in mind for various reasons and there is a big bias on US-based investigations. If youre' not in the US I recommend you reach out to your local OSINT or cybersecurity professionals association, they usually have resources and specific information, a lot of times for free. Also keep in mind: OSINT has a lot of different applications and it depends on what you're doing with it. Journalists might work more with satellites and images (a thing I know nothing about), debunkers will definitely understand social media more, if you do business intelligence you will look more at news sites, trademarks and deposits and so on to reach your conclusion. You did your course... Now what? I recommend getting on CTFs, like tracelabs that I've linked above, but there many of them (osint dojo for example) or Kase Scenarios. These are safe environments to practice on (except for tracelabs since it deal with actual cases of missing people and it can lead to... not so good leads, allow me to leave it there) You should also understand how intelligence (as the discipline) works. There are several resources, but my favourite is definitely Psychology of Intelligence Analysis. It's a series of declassified training documents from CIA analyst Richard Bauer, that was based on Daniel Kahneman (yes, the "thinking fast and slow" author, and I also do recommend this book) research on euristics. Intelligence is fundamental because OSINT might be helpful to gather the data, but the data then needs to be processed, analysed and you also need to get a conclusion from that analysis. Studying intelligence will help you avoid a lot of pitfalls that happens when you do an investigation, such as not understanding when you know enough, if you're being a victim of your own bias, if you're missing something or if you're going with the right approach. But I have to admit that the best of training I've received so far is from my local OSINT association because I've been able to train with people that work(ed) in the military, get their advice and have a deep understand of the work itself (and the reason why I have decided to actually make cyber threat intelligence my job, even if I work for a private company and I have no interest in working for the government). And yes ethics is a big thing for the OSINT community.

So I'm not done ragging on Don Sweeney just yet (and I'm tipsy so deal). I looked at the 27 picks that he traded away to other teams and like the other two, it's abysmal (yes I know my last post said he had made 29 trades but upon further review, there was one pick that Peter Chiarelli traded for Brett Connolly, and I'll get into the last pick at the end). Players in bold-faced blue text for readability (let me know if it doesn't work)

Sweeney traded for 19 players: John-Michale Liles, Lee Stempniak (uh, funny little aside, I went to college with Stempniak's nephew...and actually knew the nephew), Zac Rinaldo, Rick Nash, Nick Holden, Drew Stafford, Marcus Johansson, Tommy Wingels, Ondrej Kase, Taylor Hall, Curtis Lazar, Hampus Lindholm, Mike Reilly, Josh Brown, Garnet Hathaway, Andrei Svetlakov, Dmitry Orlov, Vinni Lettieri and Michael Callahan.

Of those 18 players...just TWO played more than 100 games with the Bruins, Taylor Hall (158 regular season, 25 playoff) and Hampus Lindholm (163 regular season, 24 playoff). What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

100% Grief. Grief is my headcannon of Pete's way of coping with the deaths and disappearance in his life, and it's definitely my angstiest fic, period. Except maybe (No) Thanks For The Memories, but that one has a happy ending.

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics have happy endings, so I'm not really sure how to answer this. Maybe r/TrueOffMyChest, just because it's kind of a rollercoaster to get there?

Do you write crossovers?

I have written exactly one crossover in my life, and it was a Wizards of Waverly Place x Suite Life On Deck Crossover: Max and Zack Through Wizards of Waverly Place. I stand by shipping them, quite frankly.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes, ironically on one of my most Kudos'd fics, 5 Times Kaz and Chase Were Affected by Their Neurodiversities, and 1 Time They Thought They Were, but Weren’t. I received hate for not making Chase outright autistic. This was written at a time where I wasn't even comfortable labelling myself as autistic, simply because I didn't know enough about it. And it's like, I feel like I'd rather be safe and write something ambiguously, than be specific and potentially misrepresenting.

Do you write smut?

I have, yes. I don't have much to say about that.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don't think so, but that would be awesome

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Technically no, but I am credited on a fic as a co-writer.

What's your all-time favorite ship?

Probably Kase. I'm just so attached to them at this point. They mean so much to me. They're the ship that like, I would be happiest if they became canon, or even if any of the actors said they ship it, that would be awesome. I feel like I can't say Michie, even though I do love it, because I'm deeply ashamed of the fact that I like it.

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I feel like I won't finish most of my WIPs; the only one I really feel like I'll get close to finishing is Beanies, because it's pretty planned out in my head. But the one I want to finish the most, by far, is Villain Arcane. I love Villain Arcane so much, and I really wish I had the motivation to finish it.

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. I'm really pretty good at writing dialogue, to the point that I've noticed some of my fics are primarily dialogue with little explanation around it. Which I don't mind to an extent, but it can be a bit much. I also think I'm really good at capturing the original writing of a character, especially for Mighty Med. Like, I've written Horace like twice and both of them it's like, I genuinely think I wrote him well, and that's a big thing for me (I generally don't praise my own writing)

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plotting/Planning things. Like, I find it really difficult to come up with conflict and conflict resolution. That's why I strive with one-shots and 5+1 fics, because there's a structure and it's not long enough that I need to make the plot complicated.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I struggle with it. I don't headcannon many characters as bilingual, so it's not really a big deal, but the thing I'm thinking of specifically is sign language. Because sign language is very cut and dry, there aren't filler words and stuff, so I'm not sure how to write it. Like, do I add the filler words to make it more comprehensible, or do I write as direct of a translation as I'm able to with my limited knowledge?

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

Oh, uhhh. I think I've technically written for Lautski before, just very vaguely so I guess that doesn't count. Oh! Jason x Kyle x Brenda x Ruth (x Caitlyn). There's a fic in my drafts about how their polycule ended up getting together, but I've not been able to finish it, primarily because I get distracted with other projects.

What's your favorite fic you've written?

Oh, that's tough. As I mentioned, I love Villain Arcane, but that's more of a love for the concept (which isn't even mine) than it is for the writing. I think it's a tie between Her and Beanies. Her isn't even that well written, and it's kind of a dumb idea, but it just means so much to me. Shout out to (No) Thanks For The Memories, which is probably my favourite lref fic, probably because I love Kaz so much.

and because 2024 is nearly ending, here are things that made me happy this year:

~ i got to intern at an educational field, specifically sa special needs dept. it was an eye-opening and heartwarming experience talaga. i miss the kids most times pero i still get updates from my mom from time to time and i'm just so proud of their progress rin!!

~ i got to travel with my family this year. looking back, super dami palang ganap ng pamilya namin ngayong taon. batangas, bulacan, bohol, boracay. bingo sa letrang b!!! saya lang. i had my first plane ride and got to experience a lot of things, feel ko kaya ko na alone next time.

~ opened our own cafe. sobrang proud rin kase nakayanan imanage even on our own, and i can say na sa 6 months run namin eh successful naman at nagpapay off naman lahat ng pagod at gastos ng pamilya namin.

~ landed a big girl job. kahit super stressful nung job hunting and application process at wala pa ako sa wisyo talagang mag-apply non kase high on vacation pa ako tapos discouraged kasi i feel like im too dumb for the adult/corporate world, andito pa rin ako and thriving!! 2 months na akong working, di ako makapaniwala???

~ i get to buy and do the things i want. siguro connected sya sa landing a job pero ayoko lang talaga humaba yung isang bullet kaya hiniwalay ko, chz. pero ayun, kada nagchecheckout ako or inaaya ako ng friends somewhere, kaya ko nang mag-g most times or mag-no dahil ayaw ko talaga at hindi dahil wala akong pera. ka-proud kase i bought my own book today na hindi galing sa blind date with a book. excited na akong mabasa sya, sana magkaoras ako for this.

~ i learned to set boundaries!! eto talaga ang di ko inaakala na makakaya ko. sobrang dami ko lang narealize this year and i just got pent up with all the wasted efforts i gave nung people pleaser pa ako at hinahayaan pa ang sariling magpagamit at magpaabuso sa mga tao. i'm so glad i got out of the relationships that made me feel less and that i've learned to say no (except sa pamilya ko, need ko pa rin yon matutunan i think??) pero ayun, setting healthy boundaries was the most important thing i've learned this year. also yung fact na di ako obligated magpatawad ng mga tao para lang makapagheal ako bc sometimes rage is fine. maybe anger is grief from all the wasted love and time.

sana masaya ang 2025 and sana maging okay na rin ako fully !! ang dami ko pa rin need iresolve within myself at andami pa ring days na malungkot ako talaga pero atleast ngayon masasabi ko na talaga na i am my own person.

last week of march | work journal in bullets.

monday - first day in our new office, feels like first day high. it was fun and exciting, pag break time para kaming mga college students sa pantry, may groupings na parang hati sa mga nerdy, rockstars, grupo ng hearthrob at queen bees haha. except our vip room. haha. it doesn't feel homey, like nung nasa temporary office pa kami, kahit magulo it feels like home and super chill lang. ngayon, though we have our comfortable and very neat office, may cr na may malakas na bidet haha at unli water refill, our room feels draining. siguro kasi mas tutok kami sa work dahil bawal ang phones. and surprisingly, hindi lang pala ako yung nakaka feel nun. tsaka medyo masikip din kasi yung room namin haha. basta nag aadjust palang naman, masasanay din.

tuesday - nothing really happened, same same. nafifeel ko na naman ang katoxican ng paligid haha. same issues, same drama na i don't wanna be in anymore, kaya lalong nakaka drain, na wala kang choice kundi mag focus nalang sa work kesa makihalubilo sa mga kawork na amplaplastik. haha. hindi ko naman ginegeneralized, pero parang ang hirap makatrabaho ng mga gen z. haha. ang dami nilang issue lagi, ang bibilis pa ma-offend. parang mga wala pang work ethics. basta nakaka umay, wala na ko ibang masabi. haha

wednesday - hindi ko alam kung dahil ba full moon or dahil pa retrograde na? pero sobrang emotional ko na naman nung araw na 'to. okay lang naman ako kumain mag isa, pero nung time na 'to ang lungkot pala. haha. di ko alam, tinamaan lang bigla ako ng topak nung araw na 'to, sila zha kasi may mga baon, gusto ko sana sa karinderya kami kakaen kasi wala akong baon at wala akong kainan, e di nila pinansin at tumuloy lang sa pantry kaya nag walk out ako para kumain mag isa. pero dahil sa badtrip, nakadagdag pa yung tagal nung cashier mag take order, napag taasan ako ng boses nung nag seserve. sa irita ko, at dahil patuloy na yung iyak ko, pina take out ko nalang kahit nakaka dalawang subo palang ako. tinawagan ko pa sana si J nun habang kumakain para di ko mafeel na mag isa ako. kaso nawalan narin ako ng gana. sinumbong ko pa sa manager yung waitress, at tinry nila ako pakalmahin, nag sorry naman si ate pero nag walk out nalang ako ulit pagkabigay nung take out food ko. later that day, pinansin ko naman na din sila zha at kumain ulit kami ni J ng dinner sa resto na yon pero sa SM na branch naman. haha. lakas ng topak.

thursday - wala akong picture kahapon haha. same ganap sa work, umattend lang kami ni zha sa birthday ng anak ng isang kawork namin. medyo badtrip lang din pala ako sa account namin, sa onshore TL namin at sa isang team member. lagi kasing may mali yung team member, and since sinabi ng onshore TL namin na yun na iraise sakaniya every time na may maeencounter ako, of course nire-raise ko. e kaso mukhang hindi niya nagegets yung point ko. feeling niya ata nag pipin point ako ng mga mali e hello? hindi ba dapat maging aware yung tao? tsaka naoffend ata siya nung una kasi hindi ko sakanya nireraise yun, kundi dun sa isang onshore member nila na kasabayan namin ni zha na syempre mas kabisado din yung buong process nung ginagawa namin. e mismong siya na bagong TL lang dun, mali mali din yung gawa. tapos kung hindi raw ba ako comfortable sakanya, kay zha ako mag sabi, hindi talaga ako comfortable sakanya kasi may history siya samin--not directly saken--sa om namin, na may pagka racist siya kasi hindi niya tinrain yung bago samin nun dahil hindi raw english ang first language namin. lol haha. di ko talaga siya bet haha. kaya di narin ako masyadong nakikipag chikahan sa gc namin since siya naging TL dun. tumahimik nga gc namin simula nung dumating siya haha. ewan ko kung nag eenjoy pa ba ako dito sa trabahong 'to or pumapasok nalang ako para sumahod haha.
