Welcome

Hello! My name is Amy Supersad and this is 「Nihongo no Benkyou」. The title translates to ‘Japanese Study’, which is what this blog is focused on. Ever since I was young, it was a dream to me to visit Japan at some point in my life. I also always had a knack for picking up new languages such as Spanish, French and Korean, so I’ve been trying to give Japanese a shot. It is difficult though, to be consistent with self-studying while working full time and pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, so this will be my guide to helping myself learn more, be consistent, and help others who may want to learn the language as well ! I will be sharing and posting content weekly of trying out different apps and online resources to see how helpful they are to me.

My 2019 Spring Anime

2019 spring anime I have watch and my ratings.

My Top 10

1. The Rising of the Shield Hero - Rating: 10/10 (Must watch)

Really one of the best Isekai anime ever! I hope they head on to do season 2. In the meantime I am giving the manga a read.

2. Dororo (2019) - Rating: 10/10 (Must watch)

This was a great story, a human vs demon struggle. Either you destroy your human empathy or confront your actions to become good.

3. Demon Slayer / Kimetsu no Yaiba (1st half) - Rating: 9/10 (Strongly recommended)

Nezuko must be protected. Even if she’s a demon. Will Tanjirou be able to change her back to human?

4. Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2 - Rating: 9/10 (Strongly recommended)

Still one of my favourite anime. Levi was freaking awesome, Mikasa is still cute and Eren still won’t stop screaming. 

5. Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu - Rating 8/10 (Recommended)

Really cute and funny slice of life series.

6. Carole & Tuesday (1st half) - Rating 8/10 (Recommended)

The music is nice and the story have been funny and sweet.

7. Senryuu Shoujo - Rating 8/10 (Recommended)

Funny and cute romance anime. Hope they will get together one day.

8. Ao-chan Can't Study! / Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai  - Rating 8/10 (Recommended but depends on your preference)

Another funny and cute romance anime but with ecchi scenes. But I still like it as they got together in the end.

9. Fruits Basket (2019) (1st half) - Rating 7/10 (Somewhat recommended)

Honda Tooru must be protected at all cost! Pacing of anime is slow to me but the story is interesting.

10. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san - Rating 7/10 (Somewhat recommended)

Want to have a fox girl take care of you? Well, watching this anime might make you want that. Not me though, I can take care of myself. A bit conflicted on this anime due to that. Senko-san is still cute though.

Other anime I have watch this season.

Shoumetsu Toshi - Rating 7/10 (Somewhat recommended) Kinda cool sci-fi anime. Could be better though.

Joshikausei - Rating 7/10 (Somewhat recommended but depends on your preference) Funny and cute slice of life anime but with some minor ecchi scenes.

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai - Rating 6/10 (Slightly recommended but depends on your preference) Funny and cute harem anime but with ecchi scenes.

One Punch Man Season 2 - Rating 5/10 (Average) Some bad animation and boring a tournament arc. Saitama can defeat any monster easily that this anime can become boring if they don’t add something better beside getting other heroes fail to defeat the monsters.

bokuben ch 62 spoilers beneath the cut, just wanted to spill my thoughts on one of the characters

i think sekijou is the character that i’ve grown to like the most in bokuben since the time she was first introduced. initially, she came off as some boisterous background / side character who was rizu’s (self-proclaimed) rival, and seemed to only be there to add to rizu’s character and story.

but as it went on, i realized that she was another person with a backstory that explained why she was the way she was, and i began to enjoy seeing her show up in the chapters, especially when she got to become rizu’s friend (more specifically, her ‘best friend’).

(on a side note, i really can’t tell if her feelings towards rizu are romantic or not, it’s a bit of a grey area in my eyes right now)

ch 62 is where i felt that she really shined through the most. it was apparent that she earnestly wanted to spend time with rizu, taking her out on the premise of getting her a replacement pencil bag but ending up treating her to fancy meals and desserts. the chapter even shows that she bought a full set of new clothes so she would have something nice to wear on their date besides her usual lab coat. this is played for comedic effect, but it stood out to me a little.

sekijou planned a full day of activities for her and rizu to do together, pulling an all-nighter to do so and drinking several cans of coffee to stay energetic. it’s honestly slightly creepy the way she did this, but at the same time it’s a bit endearing.

but when she saw that nariyuki was nearby, she looked over the plans she had made for her and rizu, and made the decision to sacrifice her scheduled day so that rizu could go shopping with nariyuki instead (since sekijou seems to have realized that rizu has feelings for nariyuki), saying that the happiness of her best friend is more important than her own feelings. 

readers are then shown a flashback of her in middle school, where she was a gifted student who has a reputation for being studious and excelling in academics, but was looked down upon by her peers for being above everyone instead of being praised for her hard work.

 feeling socially pressured and down, she was going to try and limit herself to appear less outstanding but was surprised when rizu stepped forward and performed in a way similar to herself, without caring what others thought of her. 

using this as inspiration to keep moving forward, sekijou decided she wanted to follow in rizu’s footsteps, focusing on her goals instead of the people surrounding her, and choosing to follow rizu to the same high school so she could get closer to her. she put on a lab coat when she made this promise to herself, and for most of her screentime so far she was wearing either a similar lab coat or the same one, which could possibly be her personal symbol of the decision she made (though it could just be me overthinking things, she is a science-focused student after all). she refers to rizu as “[her] savior”, and clearly holds her in very high regards. like i said before, it’s hard for me to tell whether her feelings for rizu are romantic or not.

even though she’s not really socially competent from what i can tell, her eagerness to get closer to rizu is clearly there, and being able to become her “best friend” clearly made her really happy. i don’t know what direction the story is going to take with her and rizu, but i’m rooting for her.

「なぜ」got me thinking a bit. With this being a more inquisitive/analytical form of "why," I think I can understand the translator's decision a bit. I could see this map literally to "How come you know/knew..." or "How did you come to know...". More colloquially, I think American English would favor "How did you know...". Depends on the context, but it sounds more like a cautious inquiry rather than the others, which sounds more accusatory.

this is interesting! thank you haha. really i just didn’t know that “naze” could also mean “how” is all! i always thought it was just “why” :o
