Round 1, Poll 8
Gray Catbird vs Yellow-billed Magpie

sources under cut
Gray Catbird Propaganda
"They seem really unassuming but they have such a beautiful little song and … they look like they have a little bowl cut haha so cute. They’re usually super reclusive but I have so many in my front yard rn."
Gray Catbird get their name from one of their calls, which sounds like a small cat meowing in the bushes. They make a variety of other noises, one of which sounds like a little pellet gun rattling off.
This was the bird I learned to band with, and they'll forever hold a special place in my heart because of that. Their vent is covered in rusty-red feathers and when they're young it sometimes is laced red with gray on the inside. They scream so loud in your hand but sing so pretty once they're back in the bushes. They orb in a spectacular fashion. They're incredibly easy to age in hand (to me, at least).
Yellow-billed Magpie Propaganda
"Growing up, magpies were just another bird. Pretty, but loud and kind of annoying. Just this year (in my 30s!), I learned that the Yellow-billed Magpie only lives in the central valley and on the central coast of California. These birds were so common that I had no idea they only lived here. Very few people in my region seem to know that either so I've been spreading the knowledge."
They've got quite a varied diet, as most corvids do. Insects and scavenged carcasses make up a chunk of their food, but these magpie will also eat acorns, nuts, fruit and grains. They have been seen flipping over dried cow manure to pick at the insects living underneath, and will sometimes pluck ticks off of deer and horses.
Yellow-billed magpie will nest in loose colonies, and prefer to place their nests in clumps of mistletoe. They're at risk of losing a lot of habitat as the Central Valley becomes more and more developed, which lands this species on IUCN's Vulnerable list.

SRBIJA SE DAVI U GOVNIMA I GRCA U DUGOVIMA,PUTIN ZLOCINCU ODJEBI!!!LESU MATORI. @KremlinRussia_E @mfa_russia
The X post by Simona Markovic criticizes Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, accusing him of electoral fraud and "terrorist acts," referencing a 2023 election where opposition groups, like Serbia Against Violence, protested after Vučić’s party claimed victory amid allegations of irregularities (POLITICO, 2023).
Markovic’s mention of Vučić’s "illegal activities" ties to ongoing Serbian unrest, including a March 2025 parliament incident where opposition MPs threw smoke grenades to protest government corruption, linked to a deadly Novi Sad canopy collapse symbolizing state failure (CNN, 2025).
The post tags the Kremlin, reflecting Vučić’s delicate balancing act between Western ties and Russia, as seen in his planned Moscow visit for the May 9, 2025, Victory Day Parade, despite health issues and Serbia’s foreign policy crisis (DW, 2025; Kyiv Post, 2025).

Hermann Hesse: BOL

Gilbert was a Golden Retriever and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Let me start this off with the disclaimer that no dog, regardless of breed or appearance, should be shot, maimed, or harmed in anyway, unprovoked. This is more me talking about symbolism and how (Western) society interprets different breeds of dogs.
The man who broke into the house of and murdered Melissa and Mark Hortman also shot and killed their dog, Gilbert. It has been haunting me a bit, honestly.
It’s not the exact same thing, but this rings similar to those who kill a child, or elderly member of the family they have bad blood with. Just killing another living being who has zero relation to what you are so upset over. It is sickening.
Of course, it is reprehensible to murder a politician who dedicated her entire life to actually caring for her community, which is so rare amongst people in her field of work and incredibly sought after, but he also killed her husband, Mark, and then their Golden Retriever. It is so morbidly poetic that Gilbert was such a beloved breed of dog, famous for their kind and gentle nature. Goldens are the family pet in the United States and Canada. Everything we are taught about them from childhood is that they are our best friends and great playmates. Videos of them protecting children and playing carefully with infants consistently go viral. We can’t get enough of them. Personally, my favorites have always been the ones with the rich red coats.

Picture from the Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA)
The fact that Gilbert was not a stereotypically ‘scary’ breed, such as ones we see that are heavily propagandized as ‘evil’ and inherently vicious, makes all of this feel more sadistic. I think it is important people see pictures of Gilbert, and videos of Retriever breeds in general, and keep Boelter’s actions in mind. Look into their eyes. How could someone do this to one of you guys? It is unfathomable, and that’s not to mention the contradiction of Boelter being a self-proclaimed devout and ‘pro-life’ Evangelical.
Mind you, Gilbert did not die on the spot, he was still alive after Boelter shot him—left in agony—possibly having just witnessed the senseless killing of his humans. He passed away two days after he was brought to the animal hospital, where professionals eventually deemed the most humane treatment for Gilbert would be euthanasia. He was too severely injured for them to, in good conscience, keep him alive, and that detail makes me tear up as I type this.

Gilbert was not a Doberman Pinscher. He was not a Rottweiler. He was not an American Pit Bull Terrier. He was not an American Staffordshire Terrier, nor was he a Great Dane, a Boxer, an American Bulldog, or any other villainized dog breed. Goldens are representative of loyalty, friendship, and affection. Boelter murdered Gilbert anyway, and for what? His humans, Melissa and Mark Hortman, had committed no crime of law or morality. Quite the opposite. Melissa was a champion for women’s rights, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. Mark stood beside her in her endeavors. She also volunteered for an organization by the name of Helping Paws, Inc., which raises, trains, and places service animals with people who have physical and/or psychiatric disabilities, and therapy animals for people going through the court process.
If Melissa and Mark didn’t deserve this, then surely a defenseless animal (who had fuck all to do with politics) did not either. Boelter is a sick man. This alt-right madness must be stomped out by any means necessary.
Rest in peace to Melissa Anne Hortman (May 27th, 1970 - June 14th, 2025), Mark Hortman (November 30th, 1966 - June 14th, 2025), and their beloved dog, Gilbert (unknown - June 16th, 2025).

I do realize that this is a small thing compared to the loss of human life but it horrifies me and upsets me that that fucker also murdered Melissa Hortman’s golden retriever

Schneider’s Creek
I just learned that an Environmental Study will be conducted on this concrete creek to determine what sort of improvements can and should be made. The reason for this change is flood mitigation (to prevent flooding). The brochure discussed widening and naturalizing the banks of the creek, this is something I am 100% in favour of! This could become a really beautiful area when the naturalization project is approved and completed.

No, the highest recorded temperature is ~50 celecius (source: https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/nature/weather.htm). So, heat would definitely be a threat, but the waters not just boiling by default there. There still would be a major risk of heat stroke, (and considering how utahns treat heat stroke it would be a killer), but I think the biggest risk would be the flooding, cause it's a giant hole in the ground. In the middle of a dessert. So you get one heavy rainstorm and suddenly the whole thing turns into a bowl. Also the wildfires, because a giant hole in the ground fucks with the weather and you sometimes get dry lightning storms that light the forest on fire.
