Misread Daffodils as "Dilffodils" a few days ago. I'm so ashamed.
I blame Tumblr's (in)famous reading comprehension abilities for this.

Rambling on as I have art block
I'd like to think that each of the Mer trio adapted differently to their environments and developed different features.
Sun is bright and flashy to scare off predators as a warning of venom when he was just a fry living in the reefs.
Or how Moon is built for speed and cunning to hunt in the open ocean due to its scarcity in food.
And lastly Eclipses size in the deep waters of the sea and trenches, red lights to hunt prey. His size due to deep sea gigantism and extra limbs for reach.

But doesn’t Ozai abuse his kids? Why is it so weird to assume he doesn’t do the same with Ursa? We don’t see much of her but given the relationship between both her and Zuko it seems to be implied in the show that something isn’t right. Unless i’m getting your thoughts on this relationship wrong, this is a strange take to have given he is again, a canon abuser.
The show gives us a woeful 10 seconds of shared screentime between Ozai and Ursa where they didn't even interact because of Azulon. The only indirect hints that would allow any conclusions about their relationship are how they view & interact with each child, and vice versa. Of course, there was also Bryke's pre-comics commentary about Ozai & Ursa being a 'perfect match', and that their marriage 'had certainly started better than it ended up'.
Basically, every interpretation between "they'd loved each other at some point but they've lost their common ground and their relationship is strained now" to "an exaggeration of what happened in the comics" falls on the spectrum of possibilities of how it might've gone down in the show.
I prefer the first, simply because it's more interesting to me. There are a few people in the fandom that have excellent interpretations of their relationship, but what those boil down to is that they give more complexity to both their characters. Had they loved each other at some time? Did it start to fall apart when Ozai's understanding of parenting turned out to be more and more incompatible with Ursa's own? Was she initially trying to justify to herself how Ozai started off as a strict father but kept rising his expectations to levels only one child could keep up with?
"Oh woe, when Ozai isn't abusing Zuko, he's tormenting poor Ursa! It's his only hobby. :-(" Get outta here with that shit, Yang.
Now, I'm not saying or imagining that Ozai was ever an overly outwardly affectionate man in any regard, he's just way too emotionally constipated for that. But Ozai can be a horrible parent without also needing to be the typical physically, emotionally abusive spouse, as well.
I guess the third way, and prolly most likely, is that they just about managed. They had an arrangement, knew of their shared duty & burden of producing offspring. There was some mutual respect and acceptance between them. It was never a textbook marriage but it wasn't overly arduous between them either when the children were still small. It just about worked.
