Union Day 2024 - What unites us is greater than what divides us.

 Our Nation has made tremendous progress in advancing the cause of equality for LGBTQI+ Americans, including in the military.  Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  Many of these patriotic Americans were subject to a court-martial.  While my Administration has taken meaningful action to remedy these problems, the impact of that historical injustice remains.  As Commander in Chief, I am committed to maintaining the finest fighting force in the world.  That means making sure that every member of our military feels safe and respected.

     Accordingly, acting pursuant to the grant of authority in Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution of the United States, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., do hereby grant a full, complete, and unconditional pardon to persons convicted of unaggravated offenses based on consensual, private conduct with persons age 18 and older under former Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), as previously codified at 10 U.S.C. 925, as well as attempts, conspiracies, and solicitations to commit such acts under Articles 80, 81, and 82, UCMJ, 10 U.S.C. 880, 881, 882.  This proclamation applies to convictions during the period from Article 125’s effective date of May 31, 1951, through the December 26, 2013, enactment of section 1707 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 (Public Law 113-66).

     The purpose of this proclamation is to pardon only offenses based on consensual, private conduct between individuals 18 and older that do not involve any aggravating factor, including:  

     (1)  conduct that would violate 10 U.S.C. 893a, prohibiting activities with military recruits or trainees by a person in a position of special trust;      (2)  conduct that was committed with an individual who was coerced or, because of status, might not have felt able to refuse consent;      (3)  conduct on the part of the applicant constituting fraternization under Article 134 of the UCMJ;      (4)  conduct committed with the spouse of another military member; or      (5)  any factors other than those listed above that were identified by the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in United States v. Marcum as being outside the scope of Lawrence v. Texas as applied in the military context, 60 M.J. 198, 207–08 (2004).

     The Military Departments (Army, Navy, or Air Force), or in the case of the Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, shall provide information about and publicize application procedures for certificates of pardon.  An applicant for a certificate of pardon under this proclamation is to submit an application to the Military Department (Army, Navy, or Air Force) that conducted the court-martial or, in the case of a Coast Guard court-martial, to the Department of Homeland Security.  If the relevant Department determines that the applicant satisfies the criteria under this proclamation, following a review of relevant military justice records, the Department shall submit that determination to the Attorney General, acting through the Pardon Attorney, who shall then issue a certificate of pardon along with information on the process to apply for an upgrade of military discharge.  My Administration strongly encourages veterans who receive a certificate of pardon to apply for an upgrade of military discharge.  

     Although the pardon under this proclamation applies only to the convictions described above, there are other LGBTQI+ individuals who served our Nation and were convicted of other crimes because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  It is the policy of my Administration to expeditiously consider and to make final pardon determinations with respect to such individuals.

okay hi! i have a really old editing tutorial from back in january that i've been linking people to, but it's pretty outdated by now. i also keep getting anons asking about the same things, which is fine, but i always have to go searching for the post explaining it, so having it all in one place will be a lot more convenient lol

i use a ☠ copy of photoshop cc 2017 to edit my screenshots, however the majority of everything i'm doing also works on photopea

photopea is an online version of photoshop that's 100% free and works very well! i can't recommend it enough, it's fantastic

first things first, you're going to need some screenshots to edit. for the sake of this tutorial i'll be working with this one of raffy:

in all honesty, gshade will do most of the work for you. of course it's not needed, but i definitely don't think i could live without it! in this screenshot i used sunset n' vinyl by nesurii

when opening the screenshot, the first thing i do is run it through 2 photoshop actions:

butter action by early-grape

smooth sharp (no topaz) by poolbrop

to add actions in photoshop go:

windows > actions > the 4 lines at the upper right corner of the newly opened window > load actions > your downloads folder > open up the .atn files!

if you're using photopea, as far as i'm aware you can't use photoshop actions, but i've found that 'filter > stylize > oil paint' and 'filter > sharpen > smart sharpen' have a very similar effect when using the right settings. try these:

i like these two actions because they smooth everything out nicely, but keep it sharp at the same time! i always run butter before i run smooth sharp, however butter may leave you with 2 layers. make sure to merge these layers before running smooth sharp to achieve the full effect.

before anything else i want to share the template that i use to make editing a lot faster. you don't need to use it but it's definitely made things a lot easier for me! it's a .psd file and will work perfectly in photopea

if you're using the template you can skip right on to the next section, as it's already cropped to the right size and has the colouring folder included. just drag your screenshot into it and resize to fit the height.

if you're not using it, crop your edited screenshot to:

1707 width x 1280 height

then adjust the colours to your liking. it always varies slightly depending on the picture but my regular process for each screenshot would be:

up the saturation by 8%

up the lightness by 3%

up the contrast by 12%

all of this can be done by looking in the 'images > adjustments' tab

you should end up with something similar to this!

if you want to add a moodlet or social interaction or anything similar, it's all the same process. what you'll need is a screenshot of it straight from the game. i just press the 'c' key to capture them! i'll be working with these two:

for the blue notification i'm going to select it using the box select tool. try to get it as exact as possible. one you have it selected

for photoshop users:

click on the 'select and mask...' option located at the top

adjust the global refinements at the side as follows:

smooth: 70 feather: 0.0px contrast: 50% shift edge: 0%

for photopea users:

go to select > modify > smooth

set it to 15

select 'ok' and press 'ctrl + c' to copy it, then 'ctrl + v' to paste it into your screenshot. adjust the size and position and you should end up with something like this:

next you want to add the transparent border around the notification. if you're using my editing template, right click on the reference notif in the layers tab and select 'copy layer style' (photopea > 'layer style > copy'). from there you can paste that layer style onto your own notif through the layers tab.

if you're not using the template, here's how to set it up on photoshop:

right click your notification layer and select 'blending options'

under styles, tick the checkboxes for stroke and drop shadow

input these settings:

on photopea, it should be more or less the same. repeat the exact same process with the social menu option, but instead of selecting it with the box select tool, use the magic select tool. in the end you should end out with this!

The words of Winnie Ewing at the reconvening of The Scottish Parliament on May 12th 1999.

The prominent Scottish nationalist and former MP, MEP and MSP who was nicknamed Madame Ecosse by opponents in Brussels and adopted the moniker with pride, presided over the first session of the Scottish Parliament. A referendum was held on 11 September 1997 to ask the Scottish people whether they wanted a Scottish Parliament and whether it should have tax-varying powers. A clear majority of voters voted Yes to both questions. Question 1: I agree that there should be a Scottish Parliament (result: 1,775,045 or 74.3%) or I do not agree that there should be a Scottish Parliament (result: 614,400 or 25.7%) Electorate 3,973,673 Turnout 60.1% Spoilt Ballot Papers 11,986 Question 2: I agree that a Scottish Parliament should have tax-varying powers (result: 1,512,889 or 63.5%) or I do not agree that a Scottish Parliament should have tax-varying powers (result: 870,263 or 36.5%) Electorate 3,973,673 Turnout 60.0% Spoilt Ballot Papers 19,013 This result gave the UK government a mandate to introduce a bill that would allow for the creation of a Scottish Parliament. I never seen my gran as a political person, but she had a picture of Winnie Ewing on her wall. Winnie passed away on June 21st last year, she was 93.

The Man O'War

One of the mysteries of Black Sails is where the Spanish man o’war captured in season 1 vanishes to after Captain Flint and his crew return to Walrus…but another mystery is exactly WHAT is this ship. I’ve seen her referred to as a frigate, but now that I’ve captured a good screenshot (season 2, episode 4), that this is definitely no frigate.

The man o’war has three full gun decks. Counting gun ports, it looks like each has approximately fifteen guns, plus a short gun deck back aft near the main deck. This averages to 45-49 guns per broadside, which makes this grand bitch not just a ship of the line, but a first rate ship of the line. That's the age of sail equivalent of a battleship! Take a look at the gif below of the man o’war savaging Walrus and Ranger.

(Frankly, if she was a frigate, I don't think Flint would've worried much; Walrus has the throw weight of a sixth rate frigate and would've stood a good chance; with Ranger along, they would've been just fine and no one should've panicked.)

So, what ship is this? The Urca de Lima was a real ship, though Urca was only a nickname for Santissima Trinidad, and she was part of a combination of two flotillas that made up the 1715 Treasure Fleet. This fleet consisted of eleven ships, of which at least two were ships of the line.

The first was ex-Hampton Court, a British built third rate ship of the line of 70 guns that was captured by the French then sold to the Spanish. Sources say that she was renamed Nuestra Señora del Carmen, but contemporary sources such as the governor of Jamacia, Archibald Hamilton indicate that this was a separate ship and the flagship of the second part of the fleet. (More on that in a moment.)

The second confirmed ship of the line was the French Griffon, which was the one and only survivor. (Cool fact: the captain of this ship was also likely the informant who gave Hamilton his information).

The third ship is the mystery ship that brought up the rear of the formation. This ship is harder to place, and was either a different "massive war galleon" or Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a third ship of the line. This may have been a third rate or fourth rate ship of the line, but sources make it very hard to tell. Given that the wrecks that have been found have never been positively identified, it's even harder to determine which ship was which.

Back to Black Sails. Historical evidence says that there wasn't a first rate ship of the line in the 1715 Treasure Fleet, but the show does also indicate that the Urca was traveling alone, so a bit of dramatic license says that we've got a first rater along for the ride. It's far from outside the realm of possibility, given the contemporary evidence that the Spanish definitely did use ships of the line as escorts for treasure ships.

I think it's safe to say that the ship isn't Hampton Court, however. An ex-British officer like James Flint would 100% recognize Hampton Court, who would've been captured (1707) after he left England but was a distinctly British design. Additionally, the characters continuously refer to her as a Spanish man o'war, which indicates she's Spanish-built.

Spanish-built ships of the line with three decks have 94 guns or greater. Until 1700ish, they frequently were referred to as galleons, a term that faded out of use and was replaced by navíos. If I'm going to be a real history nerd, Spain didn't really have a three deck ship of the line in this era; they'd scrapped the only one they had in 1705, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y las Animas. But prior to scrapping, this ship was sent to the colonies to harass settlers around Panama, so she was on the right side of the world in the early 18th century.

Historically speaking, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y las Animas (Our Lady of the Conception and of Souls) is the best candidate for the Man O'War in Black Sails.

In-universe speaking, that big bitch is a three deck, first rate ship of the line of somewhere between 94-100 guns, just based on the number of gun ports and the mincemeat she makes of two ships at the same time. Why did she vanish? Probably because it'd be hard as hell for anyone to beat Flint if you let him keep that ship, and Woodes Rodgers would've had a much harder time taking Nassau when she was protected by a ship of the line.

A Demo centric fic, also starring Sniper and Scout. Fair warning: you may want to skip this one if you have thalassophobia. I go into… depth… about things. This revolves around my headcanon that one of Demo’s lesser-known hobbies is swimming. Given his past in the Highlands around the lochs, and thematic association with pirates and sailing, it only makes sense that he’d be a good swimmer. And be more than happy to take a dip in freezing temperatures too. (Have you seen those shoulders? Demoman could make butterfly look like a walk in the park) This follows on from my other Thunder Mountain story, but there isn’t necessarily an overarching narrative. "What is love, and how do you get rid of it?" Dazai doesn't typically feel any emotions, at all- or at least he can't understand them. He hates that Chuuya makes him feel emotions, specifically the emotion of love, so he in turn despises Chuuya for it instead.

And it's driving him crazy.

 "I won't let you get away this time." Chuuya is doing his best to get over Dazai, but as usual, nothing goes according to plan for him. No matter how much Chuuya tries to deny it or change them, he can't get rid of his feelings.

The Bank of Scotland was founded by an Act of the Scottish Parliament on 17 July 1695.

This was Scotland's first and oldest bank and one of the first in the British Isles, in Scotland it is generally called The Bank, as opposed to the other on The Royal Bank of Scotland, which is The Royal Bank.

The original 172 shareholders came mainly from Scotland's political and merchant elite. They required a banking system which would offer long-term credit and security for merchants and landowners alike.The following year the Bank of Scotland became the first bank in Europe to successfully issue paper currency.

Although the concept of currency and bank notes wasn’t necessarily new to Scotland in the 17th century, the Bank of Scotland was the first to print its own paper currency.

The Bank's right to issue notes has been maintained to the present day. Now you may have heard that Sweden was the first country to issue banknotes but I did say "Successfully" as Johan Palmstruch, the man in charge of the Bank of Stockholm issued the first banknotes on Europe but he issued far too many and they did not have enough gold and silver tucked away to redeem them on demand and the bank collapsed. He was tried and sentenced to death or exile but was sent to prison instead and died soon after, in 1671.

The Bank of Scotland merged with Halifax Bank to become HBOS in 2001.

The first pic shows the ealiest surviving note, from 1716. Their simple design meant they were relatively easy to copy, and forgery was a persistent problem. The banknote is expressed in 'pounds Scots' rather than sterling. Although Scotland's separate currency was abolished by the Act of Union in 1707, it was still used as an expression of money for many years afterwards (£12 Scots = £1 sterling). Bank of Scotland still issues banknotes today, making it the longest continuous banknote issue in the world.

Morecambe Bay may be the most beautiful bay in Britain.

The area seen here, stretching from Morecambe (1-2)to Grange over Sands (8-10, with 3 and 4 having been taken in Morecambe), commands the sea crossing from Ireland and the routes inland; it has, therefore, long been fought over.

For thousands of years it was home to the Britons, whose descendants live in present-day Wales, and after the experience of the Roman Empire (43AD-410 AD), Britons took back control but with a Latin lilt.

Until the Anglo-Saxons came to Britannia, leading to the southern parts becoming part of the Kingdom of Northumbria in 547, and the northern staying in the British Kingdom of Strathclyde, which withstood Anglo-Saxon attacks but was so weakened by the Vikings that it fell in 1030, some being taken over by Scotland and everything in this photoshoot becoming part of the Kingdom of England.

England itself was conquered by the Normans in 1066 and there was seemingly endless fighting between England and its neighbour Scotland, but this did come to an end with the union of crowns in 1603 and the United Kingdom in 1707, so that I happily enjoyed a peaceful April (these pictures are from March 2023 but time did not allow a post earlier).

This was, though strategic, a thinly populated area where the descendants of the Britons and Saxons eked out a living from fishing and farming, until the growth of cities and industry, when Morecambe and Grange both became resorts; the dangerous ferry and bad roads were replaced by Morecambe railway station (1889) and Grange over Sands station (1857).

The money that was being made in Manchester, Liverpool and other cities thus began to flood into these resorts, though the businessmen couldn’t get away from industry in Morecambe as, unlike Grange, it developed its own industries.

This is seen in the epic Heysham power plant; built between 1970 and 1988, it will be decommissioned between 2026 and 2028, but has been captured by me and will be in a later post.

Heysham is part of the tradition of winning a hard living from these shifting sands, which led to tragedy of 2004 when 23 men, forced to work in unsafe conditions, were drowned here. (As though there hadn’t already been enough hardship here; the war memorial records the 34 local men who died in World War 1 and the 17 from World War 2).

One of the odder things to happen here was the train derailment of 22 March 2024; I took this photoshoot on 29-31 March and, as you can see in (7), the train was there for weeks; mercifully no one was killed or injured, but it reinforces the lesson the powerful didn’t learn in 2004, that the bay should be respected. (The line was restored on 21 April 2024, though too late for my journey home from Scotland, which had to be on a rail replacement bus).

Out of these sufferings has emerged tourism, industry and commuter towns which are battling their way into the 21st century amidst ongoing hardship, especially in Morecambe.

The last battle here was in 1972-74 when bureaucrats took the northern parts, around Grange and other places to be shown in later posts, out of the historic county of Lancashire and put it into the new county of Cumbria; however, these lines on the map cannot hide that Morecambe Bay is a unified whole.
