On this day, 4 June 2020, 75-year-old peace activist Martin Gugino was violently attacked by police in Buffalo, New York, during a Black Lives Matter protest. While he was merely walking, he was shoved to the ground, smashing his head on the concrete, fracturing his skull. While he lay on the ground with blood pouring from one of his ears and pooling around his head, more than 12 officers walked straight past his unconscious body. He suffered a brain haemorrhage and spent weeks in hospital recovering, and suffered long-term memory and mobility impairments as well as hearing loss. Following the incident, Buffalo police lied and said Gugino merely "tripped and fell". Then-president Donald Trump falsely claimed that Gugino was an "antifa provocateur" who was "pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment." But the assault was caught on video. When the two attackers, members of the Emergency Response Team, were suspended from the police force, all 57 officers on the squad resigned from the unit in protest. This led many people to question the narrative of bad policing only being a problem of "a few bad apples", as clearly every officer in the department supported their ability to violently assault members of the public with no consequences. In the end, there were no consequences for the perpetrators, whose charges were dismissed. Had a couple of no-go days last week and I did slip just a little bit behind (I did 287 on Friday, just didn't post it), but I'm caught up again and still on track to make my goal of 15k (only 3k away)! This week I'm looking to do 1k a day rather than 750, leaving two days' wiggle room at the end of the month should that not work out. Either way I am pretty confident I can make goal, and I'm also pretty happy with how these fics are taking shape, even with my outline being very incomplete. I'm nothing if not a planner, and yet these fics do seem to be the kind I have to just sit down and write and see where they go.

For the past two weeks I've mostly worked on the Urianger fic. It's taken a lot more canon review, but has also been easier to write confidently in some ways because Urianger is an established character with a set voice, and I just have to worry about getting it right. Writing from my own OC's perspective can actually be harder, because her voice is up to me and I always have the nagging worry that she doesn't have one, that it's not distinctive or consistent, that she won't feel like enough of a character on the page (as opposed to in my head, which has all the context). Probably goes to show that while I have a lot of OCs in my back pocket, it's somewhat more rare for me to write from their POV. Good practice, I guess!

(Incidentally, I have also surpassed my February word count of 10451, making this my best month of 2024 thus far, so that's nice.)
