Chicago Fire 12x11 Promo [ Inside Man ]

Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 11, “Inside Man,” is the spark that’s been missing from the show. It’s exhilarating, anxiety-inducing, and brings all the emotional feels by the end. At the same time, it’s the kind of episode we don’t need too much of these days, so this really isn’t an invitation for more wild concepts like this floating through.

The episode is also an intricate reminder that when the show focuses on building its characters amid the high-stakes drama, the narratives feel that much more rewarding at the end of the day. And, of course, when we focus on the relationships, the episodes feel that much more fun. It reminds viewers that this show is about a found family and a home away from home.

"Dean, I love you, but that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard you say."

"Cas." Sam sounds relieved when he opens the door. "About time."

Before Castiel can move to step inside, though, Sam puts a hand on his shoulder and maneuvers him out of the way, revealing Rowena behind him.

"Hello, angel," she purrs.

"Can you watch Dean?"

"I--"

"Great. You're a lifesaver." Sam claps him on the shoulder and then he moves past him, Rowena in tow, though she pauses to reach up and pat his chest.

"Enjoy it while it lasts."

He watches them walk away, then steps into the motel room to see Dean sitting on the edge of the bed, watching cartoons. When he looks up at Castiel, his eyes brighten.

"Hi. Who are you?"

Castiel was informed--briefly--via a harried voicemail from Sam about Dean's memory loss, but still, Castiel's not quite sure what he was expecting.

"Are you hungry?" Castiel asks after changing the channel for Dean when he started to look at a loss for how to manipulate the volume again.

When he swivels his head to look at Castiel, there's something so achingly pure, so unconcernedly happy in his eyes, that Castiel's starting to understand what Rowena meant.

"Do you have food?"

"Well. I can order you food."

"That's an awesome idea. You have good ideas. And pretty eyes."

Castiel stops midway between pulling his phone out of his pocket. "What?"

"The rest of your face is pretty too. No--wait. Not the word I wanted." Dean stops and flicks his eyes up to the ceiling while he thinks, while Castiel is still frozen on the bed. Dean's face lights up in a smile as he turns back to him. "Hot. You're hot."

"Um." Castiel shouldn't read anything into that, he decides. "Thank you."

Dean grins again like Castiel has provided the correct response.

"Oh man, this is so good," Dean says through a mouthful of bacon cheeseburger forty minutes later.

"They're your favorite," Castiel reminds him, and Dean stops, considers that, then nods like he's accepting that as a fact.

"You're my best friend," he says, for the fifth time in forty minutes, with the same happy-go-lucky tone as he's had this entire time, but still, Castiel knows that underneath he's shaken and is trying to hold onto the pieces that he still has left.

"That's right."

"I guess I'm pretty lucky," Dean says, still chewing, and he swallows cartoonishly before he turns that smile on Castiel again. "I have a hot best friend."

That's the second time Dean's commented on that. Castiel pauses again.

"I suppose you do," he settles on, but Dean's already turned back to the television.

"Your eyes are really pretty."

"So you've said." This is now the tenth time; the charm is wearing off.

Castiel is standing at the window, looking out the blinds, spinning his phone around in his hand. Sam hasn't responded to his texts, and Castiel's starting to be concerned about whether or not he needs help, but Castiel has no details, no clue of where they could've gone, so what can he do but stand here and listen to Dean deteriorate behind him?

"Wanna make out?"

Castiel stops spinning his phone in his hand. He turns away from the window to find Dean watching him with placid, but interested eyes.

"What?"

"You know." Dean holds his arms up as if holding an imaginary person and mimes something that Castiel hopes isn't Dean's actual kissing technique. At Castiel's continued silence, Dean drops his arms and looks deflated. "We do that, right?"

Slowly, Castiel shakes his head. "No, Dean, we don't."

Dean considers that, and the resulting expression he makes is both confused and pouty. "Why not?"

Castiel resists the urge to laugh at the irony of Dean asking him that question. Why Castiel has to explain this situation.

"You don't want to," Castiel says.

Dean cocks his head again, frowning deeply. "That's not true."

Castiel lifts his eyebrow. "Between the two of us, I think my perspective on the situation is more reliable."

"Yeah, but," Dean puffs, leaning back on the bed. "I know, like, two things right now, and one of them is that I wanna make out with you. A lot."

Castiel's mind whirs. It doesn't mean what he wants it to mean, he reminds himself. Dean being interested in men isn't exactly new; Dean being interested in him isn't meaningful. Dean is operating on base Dean instincts, responding to base Dean wants and desires, letting himself indulge in what makes him happy without thought or consideration. The fact that it's Castiel, specifically, standing here maybe doesn't even matter at all.

"What's the other thing?" Castiel asks.

Dean inhales sharply as if he'd already forgotten the other thing. "There's one more slice of pie." And then he goes to grab it from the table.

"Dean." Castiel reaches over to snatch the pocketknife from him--the fifth one that Dean's discovered on his person. "No sharp objects."

The scolding bounces right off him though, and he kicks his feet as he glances around the room, his fingers drumming against his knee.

Castiel sighs heavily and scrubs his hand over his face. "I hope Sam doesn't take much longer."

"Sam is my brother," Dean says immediately, and Castiel nods his confirmation. "What's wrong?"

When he looks over at Dean, Dean is studying him, his feet still kicking against the bed, so that it shakes gently with each movement.

"I'm worried about you."

"You're my best friend," Dean says, and again, Castiel nods. Dean blinks at him, once. "Are you sure we don't kiss?"

That's the third time he's asked. Castiel gets up from the bed and paces away, back toward the window.

"I'm sure."

"That's crazy," Dean says. "I love you."

The air conditioner unit by the window makes a clanking sound, and outside, the vending machine buzzes, but just now, Castiel can't hear either of those sounds over the gentle thud of Dean's feet against the bed. Castiel turns, and Dean's watching his hands in his lap, opening and closing his fingers.

Castiel shouldn't take advantage. No--poor word choice. Castiel shouldn't trust. He shouldn't trust that Dean means what Castiel hopes he means just because Castiel hopes he means it. And the fact that Dean can say it now, but can't say it other times, should tell him a lot, too.

Still. Still, though. Castiel would like to tell him, at least once. Maybe he won't get another chance.

"I love you too."

When Dean whips his head up, the smile is incandescent. Castiel is reminded too deeply, too fiercely of a younger Dean, before the past few years hardened him, pushed him deeper into his trauma, farther away from the lightness he possessed even despite all the years of trauma that had come before.

"Yeah?" he asks, lit up from within.

Castiel feels himself tense all the way to the core of his grace, burning hot inside Jimmy's body--though sometimes in his more private, selfish moments, he thinks this particular body is his now, too.

"Yes," he admits on an exhale, if only to see Dean's smile widen. "Yes, Dean, I love you."

Dean grins, brightly, and then holds his hand up for a high five.

What feels like fifteen hours later, but probably was only another hour or so, Sam calls to say he and Rowena are on their way back. Castiel hangs up and feels such relief that for a second he's not sure he can breathe.

"What's up?" Dean is sitting next to him on the bed, his leg still swinging idly.

"Sam and Rowena are on their way back to fix you."

"Woo!" Dean pumps his fist in the air, and then he swoops in, and before Castiel realizes what's happening, Dean's hand is on his face and his lips are brushing against his own.

He jerks back, pulling out of Dean's touch. "Dean," he says, and it's meant to be a warning, or a scolding. He's not sure it sounds like that, in the end.

Dean tilts his head and frowns. "Bad?"

He can still feel the ghost of Dean's lips against his own, still warm even though they barely had a second to exchange warmth. Castiel turns away and squeezes his eyes shut.

"No. I-- It wouldn't be right."

"You don't want to?"

Afterward, Castiel will realize that he never even really considered lying. He looks over to Dean, wide open and hurt almost, like he's holding his breath, waiting to hear what Castiel says.

"You aren't in your right mind. I'd be taking advantage of you."

Dean's mouth opens and closes, and opens again, but before he finds anything to say, Castiel continues.

"Sam and Rowena will be back, and soon you'll be back to your normal self." He says it with conviction, with finality.

Dean studies him, silent, still, which already has Castiel on edge because this whole time Dean's been anything but silent and still--certainly not at the same time.

"What?" Castiel finally asks.

"If my normal self doesn't want this with you, then he's an idiot. And a dick."

Castiel swallows through a lump in his throat. "You don't know what you're saying."

"I don't?" The confusion is so gentle, so genuine. It cracks something in Castiel's chest; it cracks something so severely that he doesn't move, doesn't pull away, as Dean reaches his hand over and covers Castiel's.

"You're confused," Castiel says, softly, but still he doesn't move. Dean walks his fingers around until they slide between Castiel's own and then they're holding hands, sitting together on the bed, and Castiel feels powerless to pull away.

"I don't feel confused," Dean says softly back, a confession, almost, a question. Seeking confirmation, seeking answers, when Castiel doesn't have any for him.

So Castiel doesn't say anything. He watches their hands joined together on the bed, and he feels his heart racing, and he doesn't speak, and neither does Dean, which again is such a change from the rest of the day that Castiel knows there's something different in the air now. Dean inches closer; Castiel doesn't pull away. Their arms are touching, and now their shoulders, and now their hands are resting on Castiel's lap because one of them moved their hands to let Dean sit even closer.

When Castiel dares to look up, Dean is there--Dean is right there, close enough for Castiel to feel his breath, let alone to hear it, the soft inhale and exhale. When Dean starts to lean in, Castiel closes his eyes.

There's a sound at the door, keys in the lock.

Dean's up in a second, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he goes to the door. "Who's that?" he asks, light, cheerful.

Castiel watches him go and tries to calm the pounding in his chest.

"It's Sam and Rowena," he says, tired. "They're here to cure you."

"Thanks for everything," Sam is saying. Dean and Sam walked Castiel and Rowena out to their cars; she's already left, with a kiss to their cheeks that Castiel is still deciding if he finds charming or not. It's a pleasant distraction from trying to read Dean.

He's made no indication of whether or not he could remember anything from the past day; it didn't even occur to Castiel that he might until it was all over and Dean's been either staring at Castiel or pointedly not staring at Castiel ever since Rowena reversed the spell.

"Of course," he says, because of course. He gives Sam his best attempt at a smile while trying not to think about how Dean is staring at his shoes. "I'd... better get back to my search."

Sam nods and raises his hand in a wave as he takes a step back, and Castiel starts to turn too, fishing the keys out of his pocket.

"Hey, Cas. Wait a sec."

Castiel's heart stops, his hand halfway extended to unlock his door. Sam pauses too, but Dean glances over his shoulder and though their faces barely move, communication occurs because Sam nods at them both and then walks back to the room.

Neither he nor Dean speak until the door shuts behind Sam.

"Yes?" he asks, afraid already, the adrenaline in his vessel turning parts of himself cold and tingly and others on edge, ready to leap into action, which he imagines in this case would be more flight than fight.

"Sorry I was, uh," he starts, his eyes back on his shoes, "pushy. Back there. It's kind of hazy, but I remember--" He breaks off abruptly and when he sneaks a glance up at Castiel, he looks small again, hesitant and unsure.

"Don't apologize," Castiel says in a rush. "You weren't well. I didn't read anything into what you said."

The silence is heavy again, as they both work hard not to look at each other. Castiel feels it when Dean's gaze returns to him though, feels it burning a hole through him.

"Did you mean what you said?"

Castiel swallows thickly. "What-- What did I say?"

"That you--" Dean stops again. When he shrugs and says, "You know," he maybe means it to be lighthearted, but it's anything but.

"I'm not sure--" Castiel tries, but Dean rolls his eyes.

"Come on, man. You know what I'm talking about."

There is no other option here, no other thing he could say. "Yes. I meant it," he says, and he braces himself for whatever is about to come, for the rejection, for the end to their friendship.

Dean exhales, long and shaky. "Fuck."

"You don't have to--worry about it. I'm fine."

"Cas." Dean is exasperated, fond, and Castiel dares to look at him, his eyes a glittering, clear green in the cool light of the afternoon.

This is the moment where Castiel starts to think that maybe he doesn't have to brace himself; that maybe the rejection he was imagining isn't going to come after all. Dean's eyes drop to his lips, and then he blushes, high on his cheekbones as he skirts his eyes away, as he licks over his lips, as he gets that bashful and shy look on his face, in the curve of his shoulders. When he turns back to Castiel, he's smiling.

"There's something I didn't get to finish," he says.

Even though Castiel knows what the answer is, he asks, "What?"

Dean closes the gap between them, but when he leans in to kiss him, Castiel meets him halfway, his hand sliding up his shoulder.

Hello my precious friends!!! We are still in season 12, one of my favorite seasons.

This time we will talk about a very important episode for the storyline, 12x11 "Regarding Dean."

Foreshadow of Season 14 and Healing!Dean

I already talked about this episode in one of my spec from season 14, you can read it here.

Now, let's focus on Dean and the rabbit.

The rabbit is a representation of introspection, new life. Regarding Dean was a very pivotal episode, Dean centric, that showed us how he ends choosing their hunting lives against happiness, just like in episode 14x13, where he chooses his present family (Cas and Jack) vs John Winchester (his past).

So when Sam says...

SAM: Yeah. We need to retrace your steps. All right, think.

Is exactly the way Dean will walk through season 14, retracing his own steps, introspection, Healing!Dean season. Grow up.

We have also Scooby Doo in this episode, every time this sweet dos appears, is a call back to Dean's innocence, one of the most important characteristics that will keep Dean strong to handle AUMichael possession.

Another important scene that foreshadowed AU!Michael possession and episode 14x13 was when Dean was looking his reflection on the mirror.

DEAN: Ahh. Okay. My name is Dean Winchester. Sam is my brother. Uh, Mary Winchester is my mom. And Cast—Cas is my best friend.

Dean is trying to focus and remember who he is, and to not forget the persons that are important to him. The way he utters Cas name, as if at first he was about to say his entire name, he has to backtrack and give that name the meaning, the importance. He doesn't call the angel Castiel, but Cas. His Cas.

This scene is very important, is a premonition of the possession and a prologue, again, to 14x13, in which we met a Castiel that never rescued Dean from Hell.

It also represents the introspection I was talking earlier. Dean will have to find who he really is, throughout season 14, to love himself, self acceptance, to finally aknowledge what he really wants.

So, the question in this episode was, WHO IS DEAN WINCHESTER?

We have hints of his innocence, with Scooby Doo, and this other side of the coin...

ROWENA: You can really remember nothing, can you? What a gift not to recall the things you've done.

DEAN: What have I done?

ROWENA: Oh, you're a killer, Dean Winchester.

Rowena is calling out the dark side of Dean, the regrets. The guilt. The Guilt is a heavy rock inside Dean's soul. His own old inner enemy, whispering into his ear he doesn't deserve to be saved and loved.

But, Rowena concluded this...

ROWENA: But... but... though you may be a stubborn pain in the arse with the manners of a Neanderthal and the dining habits of a toddler, everything you've done, you've done... for the greater good.

DEAN: Oh, and that's supposed to make it okay?

ROWENA: I wouldn't know. You help those other than yourself.

If you pay attention here, it seems as if Dean is talking with himself, is Dean's innocence questioning his adult self, and the excuse for the greatest good, must be the quote he repeats to himself each time Guilt comes to him.

Then, at the end of this introspection Journey, we have Dean choosing his present, against a happiness ignoring who they really are.

DEAN: Huh. Well, look, was it nice to drop our baggage? Yeah, maybe. Hell, probably. But it wasn't just the crap that got lost. I mean, it was everything. It was us, it was what we do, you know? All of it. So... that's what being happy looks like? I think I'll pass.

This is also the conclusion of episode 14x13 and it talks about improvement of character.

The Bond and the Empty

When the episode starts, we have again, a guy dressed in blue that dies. (Cas mirror and foreshadow of his incoming death).

We also have Dean loving Dory, a blue fish.

And another important thing happened, I mentioned too in the meta I linked before, this scene...

Immediately after seeing a bloody handprint on the log, Dean recalls Castiel, why? Because one of the most important episodes in his life had been to be rescued by Castiel, to meet Castiel and fall in love with him. So, the representation of all of that, is the handprint in his shoulder. That's why consciously or subconsciously, Dean recalls his angel when he sees a handprint.

Two more symbolisms of Castiel and the Empty, were marked by two visual Narratives.

If you were reading all my metas and specs from season 14 and 15, I said dark Forest represents the Empty.

So, in this episode, we had one of the witches walking in the middle of a dark woods. And he is dressed in blue. As a foreshadow of Castiel walking in the Empty.

We also saw a blue dissected butterfly in the witches' house, another symbolism and foreshadow of Castiel's death.

Dean is Bi

We had a clear reference to Dean's bisexuality in this scene:

We have at first Sammy asking if Dean rode Larry and is a huge second meaning in asking his brother I he's into man. Then we had the girl answering he did good, with her too, of course, so, what else should I say here? Perfect subtext about Bi!Dean settled by the writers.

To Conclude:

Regarding Dean was a pivotal episode that foreshadowed a lot of important topics that will be elaborated in the following seasons.

It was Dean's centric episode, driving the character to the introspection, and preparing him for the season 12 finale in which he will loose Castiel, and after that the possession and finally, Healing!Dean journey towards what he really wants in season 14.

I don’t think that Damon is Kelly’s son, he seemed more keen to impress Stella. If he wanted to bond somehow, he would’ve tried to reach him to talk about the call or something, like Gallo did sometimes. I don’t discard the brother story, however. It still feels a bit recycled anyway…

My bet is on him being another Robbinson puppet. The “inside man” thing seems pretty obvious, except I think he’s not the inside man of 12x11, but the inside man of Robbinson. Even when it was Lennox, the guy not only filled against Vi but against Sev too, and about something so minimal! Then Boden intervened for both of them and got Robbinson out of DC Hill short list, which adds Sev to her targets because he’s an officer too, he supports Boden completely and he has not only a legacy in CFD but the respect of many (some because of Benny and some because he is Kelly Severide).

Lennox failed because he didn’t tried to become part of 51. So, now, she sent Damon, who is getting in the good graces of Stella and 51, everyone can see that he has that “help the others” urge, even when he just arrived and don’t know anyone, therefore no one will suspect that he his Lennox 2.0. Damon knows who are the pillars of 51, and what moves them, that’s why he was looking to Sev’s photo and showed some interest about it as well as it’s pretty obvious that he knows who Stella is too. He not only told her that she has a reputation but he talked about some of her most impressive cases and even referred her award. The guy is at the CFD for how long, a pair of years? There was no cerimony, Stella delivered Carver’s herself, how does he know about it? I think he was lectured about Sev, Stella and Boden, at least…

I get that the Kelly’s son storyline is compelling and makes some sense but why so much interest and focus on Stella? Because she’s his wife? Why does it matter, because she’s someone that Sev cares about? 🤔 Doesn’t make a loooot of sense to me, and it seems like “the obvious pick”, you know? Like, they introduced a new character that seems to have a longer story that just one episode and everyone got in the first episode that he’s Kelly’s son? I’m holding on Lullo’s story, when he said “lots of theories on the new guy 😂” he seemed amused about all the spiraling about that son storyline, I’m not convinced (seems like I got lost in my thoughts, sorry 😅🤪)

I do think there is the potential that we are getting ourselves all worked up, and it won’t be the case at all?, i think Lullo’s story does help calm me down a bit ahah!

I also agree that Damon was a bit too focused on Stella to be Kelly’s kid!

I've rewatched the 12x11 promo so many times now and here's what I noticed:

- Kelly is handcuffed and at gunpoint when he's driving the rig (Truck 38 thankfully, not 81)

- the place that Truck 81 and Kelly are taken to looks like the service depot Violet and Brett went to in season 10 when Hawkins bumped Ambo 61 to the front of the line

My thoughts are that the men are stealing CFD rigs and an inside man is letting them into the service depot to store them as an interim measure. I think Kelly just so happens to be on the app floor when they show up with guns and he hides in Truck 81, not knowing the Truck is about to be stolen.

Later, Kelly causes the Truck 38 to flip and explode as a last ditch attempt to escape because he can't get away any other way.

Whatever happens, I'm so excited for next week. Looks so good!!! And I'm here for all the worried Stella (and hopefully Stellaride reunion) content we're gonna get

that’s pretty much what i got from the promo. i thought the warehouse looked familiar so you might be right that it’s the service depot that brett and violet went to.

13x01 - Episode Review - Part 2

"Nougat Winchester” and narrative mirrors in 13x01

It has taken me forever to finish this part of my review to the extent that we have already had another episode before I finished it! But rather than curse my inability to focus I’m gonna press on and complete this before I start my 13x02 review.

Ah Jack, Jack our little nougat Jack. The way the fandom has embraced you is very touching. The internet screams of “PROTECT HIM” certainly show that Alexander Calvert has done an exceptional job of “pulling a Misha” and making us fall in love with him by the end of his first scene. I was not expecting that one bit. 

I’ll be honest and say that over the hiatus I haven’t paid too much attention to him. I did read some of the meta and speculation that @tinkdw and others put out there, but it was never really something I focused my thoughts on. I figured he would be another character that would test the team free will dynamic and would be a good avenue for the writers to comment on the concepts of nature vs nurture. I remember reading some speculation once the episode titles first came out about “The Scorpion and the Frog” and anyone who knows that story knows very well that the title itself foreshadows Jack going darkside – to his own potential destruction. (The scorpion, in carrying out its own “nature” and stinging the frog that carried it – not only doomed the frog, but doomed itself as well.)

Jack has officially won me over though. He was a charming innocent and funny character, and I think his interactions with Clark brought a lot of light to an otherwise terribly angsty and painfully heart breaking episode. (#bringbackClark2k17)

But what really blew me away was how both Jack AND Clark were such OBVIOUS mirrors for Dean and Cas and to a lesser extent to Sam. It amused me to no end. Therefore this review will focus on those mirrors, and what they mean.

Jack is a narrative mirror of Team Free Will

This is the important thing to remember. He is all of them, and will have aspects of all them characterised into his personality as we continue to get to know the character in the coming episodes. 

I am sure that there are already thousands of words of meta on this topic (since I’m over a week late to the game) but I’m gonna throw my hat in the ring anyway.

The most obvious mirror we get from Jack is for Castiel. I have said already that Castiel was all over every single scene of 13x01. That Dabb didn’t want the audience forgetting him for a second. (thank you Dabb you wonderful man). I have already seen the many gifsets floating around comparing all of Jack’s “Cas” moments to the original famous Cas moments in the show - and we know that this carries over into episode 2 as well. 

Firstly, we can see immediately in the way Jack is dressed that he is coded as a Cas mirror:

Look at the tan jacket, the pale blue shirt, visually he is already a mini Cas. Remember they could have dressed him in ANYTHING. They chose a tan Jacket and pale blues. They chose these colours because this show has a visual library and certain things always mean certain things. Put someone in a tan coat or jacket and they are a Cas mirror. This is how these things work. 

(the bulls horns hand symbol does however have Lucifer connotations which ties him to his biological father whether he likes it or not - but more on that when I go on about signs and symbols).

Probably the most “Cas” like moment in this episode was this one:

But there are many more. The constant confused expression for starts:

The scene with the candy was delightful - and gave him the fandom pet name of “Nougat Winchester” which I have stolen from Lizzy as my new tag for him because its so fitting.

(on that note - I did find it interesting that Jack isn’t able to answer the Sheriff when she asks him for a last name. Surely he knows his mother’s name was Kline? Why didn’t he give her that? We were all calling him “Jack Kline” over hiatus, but now it doesn’t seem like its the case - personally I think this is because he will indeed get “adopted” as a Winchester and will use the surname at some point in future - probably in front of Lucifer causing a hell of a lot of anger. God knows the show has pointed out enough times over the past season that Castiel is a Winchester - leading to mainstream media giving him the last name:

Anyway, as I was saying Jack is a huge Cas mirror, and his adorably gluttonous love of candy was a call back to:

Perhaps we can once again talk about angels and addiction and how this may affect Jack? Because they really don’t have the self control that human’s do (even though Cas was affected by famine at this particular moment).

So why is Jack a mirror for Cas? Well this is probably the first clue:

I screamed the first time I watched this moment. I think we all expected it to remain subtextual. We all know that this season will explore the role of fatherhood and how it affects each character, but this was so much more than we were expecting. Jack is a Cas mirror because he has majorly imprinted on Cas from the womb. He is first and foremost a Cas mirror because Cas is on his mind from the moment of his birth, and this reveal confirms it. Every question of “Father?” that he says so ominously in the first part of the episode is directed at Castiel. It is Castiel he was looking for, not Lucifer. 

I did say that Castiel was in every second of this episode, forcing the audience to continuously remember him and his importance - and this moment made me jump for joy. 

The way the episode continuously plays with the audiences expectations is really interesting. They want us to assume the worst of Jack, but each time he surprises us by delighting us with some adorable Cas like thing. Jack says “I’m hungry” and we are supposed to feel uneasy about that because just 2 seasons ago we had another very hungry powerful child who fulfilled her hunger by eating human souls. We are supposed to worry about Clark in that moment, and to follow the Sheriff down the darkened halls and flickering lights terrified of what Jack has done - but he is sitting there cross legged on the floor with Clarke surrounded by candy wrappers and proclaiming how much he likes nougat. Its a lovely moment and it forces the audience to change their minds completely. 

When Jack reveals that he thinks Cas is his father, our reaction is much the same as Sam’s, but we fall for him just like Sam does, and it sets the season up nicely because for once the audience is NOT supposed to be on Dean’s side here. (I’ll talk about this more in my review of episode 2 where it is more relevant but basically, we are supposed to feel sorry for Dean because we know that he isn’t seeing things clearly. We are supposed to root for Jack and be on Sam’s side in all this, and to see Dean as a character shrouded in a deep grief and anger)

I love that they made it textual that Cas is the father. (major flashbacks to 11x06 right now though)

“Jenny, he is not ready to be a father!”

I’ll continue jumping for joy over this as the season goes forward, but for now I want to talk about how Jack is also a mirror for Dean. Because he is and it again, wasn’t subtle.

A young boy on a quest to find his father, to have to accept the death of his mother right at the start, and who is forced to grow up far quicker than he should? Yeah that sounds about right. 

Whilst Dean and Jack seem at odds with each other from the start, they are both set up as mirrors in their joint grief for Castiel. That heart wrenching moment at the end of the episode where Dean is wrapping Castiel’s body for the pyre comes only moments after we get to see Jack’s own grief for his mother so touchingly portrayed as a grip to her covered foot. Both Dean and Jack are only shown touching the feet of those they lost, there is probably some deep symbolic meaning to that linked to Christ and washing the feet of his disciples or something but I’ll leave that meta to someone far more versed in bible lore than me. 

We know that in episode 2 the Dean parallels get much stronger, with Dean being the second Winchester (after Cas) that he imprints upon. I’ll talk about this in my episode 2 review, and instead leave this here. Jack is Dean for his grief, and his ties to humanity, and how he has been robbed of his childhood. I am interested to see how they go about keeping Jack innocent. He is in the body of a man, but his mind is still so childlike. I hope that he becomes a symbol for Dean’s own innocence in a theme started in 12x11. 

Finally, the one touched on the least in episode 1 but probably the most significant to Jack’s own arc going forward - Jack as a mirror for Sam.

What so far is probably the least obvious in terms of mirror’s is actually the most obvious in terms of story lines. There is a reason Sam so desperately wants to believe in Jack, believe that he is good and can do good things. Because Sam has been in this situation himself. 

Sam’s entire early series arc was about fighting the darkness inside himself, fighting against his own dark powers that came from a place of evil, and resisting Lucifer’s pull. Sam’s been there. So of course Sam is rooting for the kid. Sam and Jack have the biggest connection in terms of their connection to Lucifer. Sam immediately tries to see things through Jack’s point of view. Yes, he’s not as tied down with grief and anger as Dean is - Sam hasn’t just lost the love of his life (though the deancas parallels to SamJess are very strong throughout 12x23 and 13x01 as well).

Sam still has hope, because he see’s himself in Jack. He knows he managed to resist that dark power, and he has faith that Jack can to. I expect the Sam/Jack mirrors to come through far more strongly in episode 3 when we see them interacting together without Dean there to cause conflict, so it will be interesting if we get to delve more into Sam’s past and trauma this season, as it’s about time the show focused on his issues around Lucifer.

Clark as the exposition for Cas’s return... among other things

I could talk for hours about Jack and everything he stands for, but right now I just need to add this about Clark, because boy did he pull focus. In an episode so heavy with grief and full of reminders of Castiel as well as establishing Jack into the audiences mind, Clark comes out of no where and almost steals the show (almost). 

When we are introduced to Clark only 5 minutes into the episode, he is mucking around with the menu changing every item into something ‘butt’ related. I could meta on this but tbh its so very on the nose that I don’t think it’s needed. You all know exactly what Burgers and Butts are making us think of. Its juvenile but its hilarious (my personal favourite is the salty butt combo - a bit of salt is a good thing especially in destiel fandom!).

So skipping past those obvious jokes, what interests me most about Clark is this:

“He’s fired me like seven times... and I keep coming back.”

Look at this face! Dark hair, Blue eyes, extremely charming? Hello Cas mirror!

At this point in the show, Dean has watched Cas “die” seven times. I don’t think the above was an accident. 

The fact that Clark then says “Around here, I’m untouchable” is kind of hilarious. Since Clark later gets stabbed with an angel blade - AND SURVIVES.

However for the rest of the episode, Clark is so much more of a Dean mirror, to Jack’s Cas mirror. Clark shows Jack his humanity. He makes Jack happy enough for his powers to make the lights flicker (honestly if this doesn’t make the whole grace orgasm blowing out the lights head canon real I don’t know what does). He feeds him candy, jokes around with him, and is generally such a playful and charming character that we can’t quite help but associate him with Dean.

I love how Clark’s mum the Sheriff tells the police officer that “There’s no such thing as weird, everyone is normal in their own way” because isn’t that just a massive shout out to anyone who is slightly ‘different’? All of us who identify with this show about the ‘weird’ things because we are a little bit weird ourselves? Whose to say what is normal and whats not? 

What I love about this line is that it backs up my claim that the show is trying to prepare the audience in a way for things they may not expect... especially the part of the audience that watches for macho men, guns and death - the Republicans, the dudebros, the right wingers, the assholes who think that to fit in in this world you have to fit into some idealistic little box. Well, believe me this show has a few surprises in line for those people. I can’t wait for it to all come to a head.

Team Free Will 

Ultimately, what 13x01 has shown us is that Jack is a combination of ALL of team free will. He is his own person of course, but he shares elements and traits with all of them. I think it’s so fitting that so soon after Dean’s memorable speech to Cas in 12x19:

“You, Me, and Sam, We’re just better together. So now that you’re back, lets go Team Free Will”

In which Dean brought this term back for the first time in canon since it was used in 5x13, do we now have a character who is the embodiment of all three of them. For me, it seems that this was intentional and that Dean’s words really were the truth - that once Cas comes back, all three of them will be able to save Jack from himself, along with any other nastiness that comes their way. It is my absolute belief that the moral of season 13 will be that Dean, Sam and Cas need each other, and need to work together in order to defeat whatever evil comes their way. Jack is proof of that. How he mirrors all three of them, and is at this point in time, internally divided:

He has Cas’s innocence, naivety and endearing curious nature, as well as his angelic power.

He has Dean’s humanity, his desire to be good, and a need to reach out to people and bond with them.

He has Sam’s inner darkness, linked to his emotions and leading him to question his own monstrous nature. His struggle between his own inner good and evil. 

When these three sides of him conflict, it will cause problems. Just like how conflict between Dean, Sam and Cas is usually the primary cause of disaster in the supernatural universe. Jack’s fate, and his ability to control himself and his opposing sides, is intrinsically tied to Team Free Will themselves coming together and actually working as a team once again. 

And I bloody well can’t wait to watch this story play out.

I don’t really have a question, more like I want your opinion on one of my meta/headcannons? So, Jack gloms onto Cas pretty fast. Unless Jack can determine good from evil from inside Kelly (another topic entirely), what attracts him to Cas? Even if Dagon wasn't nice to Kelly, at least she kept her safe (ish). So, my headcanon is that there is residual grace from lucifer in all of the vessels he inhabited, namely Cas and Sam. Like, he recognizes it as something of his father's. (1/2)

(2/2) I also choose to believe that Jack isn’t evil just because Lucifer is; Lucifer wasn’t born evil anyway. So, maybe Jack will be attracted to Sam, feel safe in his presence, in the same way, using his father’s chosen vessel as a placeholder for his actual father. What do you think attracted Jack to Cas? (I love your meta, keep up the awesome work! :D)

Wow, all the questions :D Well, here’s my opinion based on my understanding and reading of the whole show and Jack’s story so far.

1. Jack zoning in on Cas - it could be that it’s due to Lucifer’s grace but that kind of takes away from the point of it…because imo it’s to do with CAS.

Jack is a catalyst, an exposition for TFW.

He’s not going to suddenly be the focus of the show, he is there to tell us things about the guys we care about already. So imo he zones in on Cas because Cas is good and has good intentions. I mean even within these 2 episodes, the last and first scene we see of Cas with Dean is him caring and healing him.

So yeah, Cas is trying to do the right thing (even if he is stupid for the right reasons, right? because that is Cas’ go - to, it’s what he’s always done, making some pretty crappy decisions based on doing the right thing, ultimately it all works out thanks to TFW in the end most of the time in the best way it can in SPN, leading to the next problem, but THIS time or at least, at the end…. Cas needs his OWN WIN based on doing things for the right reasons,  he needs his hero arc and personally I feel it’s likely to happen through Jack, especially if s14 or pushing it s15 is the last, but that’s just speculation, but really it doesn’t make sense otherwise, if they’re going to keep going Jack kinda has to end up bad or making something worse to keep the story going, but as it stands he is the perfect metaphor/catalyst to tie up all of TFW’s arcs and I love it, I’m so ready).

People had different pov’s on this at the time and as hiatus goes on and we learn more from where season 13 is going it seems many are coming around to the idea that Jack is a blank slate, that he showed Cas and Kelly a vision but that he did he isn’t doing it maliciously but is reaching out, that he probably doesn’t know right from wrong that well at this point, potentially he is like the good Angels were in s4 (epitomised by Cas) and thinks paradise is a good thing, that he’s helping, he doesn’t understand free will (he needs someone to teach him about free will, humanity, love… coincidence?).

( This is why we have this wild wild speculation that perhaps he could bring Cas back at first without his memories (so the “most important parts” are back, ofc, as we know thanks to the themes of this in 12x11, 12x20 and who are you as foreshadowing perhaps for this) because he wants to help Cas and doesn’t know this is wrong at this point, because he is still in this ‘paradise and peace is good’ mentality . He just wants to take away the pain, the regret, the self loathing due to his past mistakes that runs through him and has led him down this depressive arc. Then we can see who Cas really is, fun loving, sweet, confident and caring (much like Crazy!Cas imo) and he chooses to have his memories restored and we get a glorious “Dean!” revelation. Who the fuck knows, but I love this idea now @super-sootica laid it in my head and I built this freaking whole of s13 wild fanfic in my head :p )

Either way he’s brand new and acting on instinct and based on his surroundings (which is why I said that imo Jack would probably be ‘bad’ or make mistakes in the first part of s13, to mirror Sam’s arc but also because Dean would probably drive him off or make him turn angry/dark/whatever because while Sam is starting to get through to Jack Dean is so upset and angry he probably bursts into the room and starts yelling at Jack like “WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST DO? YOU SON OF A BITCH YOU KILLED MY HUSBAND AND MY MOM!” and what did we get from SDCC? Exactly this *smugly and annoyingly pats self on the back and hopes this is actually true but has to wait and see*.

Dagon was AWFUL to Kelly, she was threatening Kelly all the time and wanted to CONTROL Jack, while also absolutely being a threat at the sandbox to them all, while Cas had smiled when touching Kelly’s stomach and Jack noticed this, making Kelly’s eyes flash in the motel - so for me Jack had noted Cas’ goodness before this point, in contrast to Dagon. The whole thing was set up for us to see Dagon as the dark parental figure mirror while Cas was the light mirror in all their interactions with Kelly being heavily mirrored. Eg. Cas getting Kelly the water, being hugely consensual and treating Kelly like her own person. Dagon is Lucifer’s stand in and Cas is Lucifer’s light mirror - so absolutely the two are supposed to be seen by Jack and by the audience more importantly, exposition ally through Jack and Kelly, as good v evil.

2. I am a huge believer in that we have no CONFIRMATION that Lucifer was ever originally evil, there’s a hint at it with the jealousy of humanity but then there’s Chuck literally saying he’s not the villain so… yeah. Jealousy does not make a person evil. Then we find out that it’s all because he just wanted his father’s love? Mirroring him to all of TFW? OK they did the story badly imo, making him whiney etc but that was the point of late s11-early s12 for Lucifer. 

Then there’s the mark that corrupted our loved and up on a fandom pedestal righteous man Dean within a year and Lucifer had it for Millenia. I mean Lucifer can be evil in the end and be killed (and it’s easer, narratively) but I think we need confirmation either way as my personal view as of right now is that Lucifer should be redeemed and/or reset as the mark did twist him beyond redemption as it stands now OR we need confirmation that he was always evil. But imo a story of redemption for Lucifer through Jack (ironically as he was his tool for evil, should be the one to redeem him and TFW through teaching Jack himself the righteous path, as our heroes) and someone else coming out of the woodwork as the actual big bad due to their own selfish, not forced upon them reasons, makes more sense. Again… SDCC hints at Michael? I’m super interested cos this fits my end of s12 theory exactly, but I didn’t think they’d necessarily do as it’s a bit convoluted but given that Dabb seems to be living in my brain… I’m intrigued.

Anyway, the idea that Jack is inherently evil is just so WRONG I can’t even…. there are 2 points, that Lucifer probably wasn’t even evil to start with and the WHOLE POINT OF THE SHOW which is that each individual can decide what they want to be and be their own person NOT based on their lineage and specifically fathers and blood. 

FAMILY DON’T END IN BLOOD AND IT DOESN’T START THERE EITHER.

If Jack decides to be evil, if he turns evil for his own reasons then FINE. It makes no sense to me unless they are going to keep going with the show for a good while longer (like s15+) or don’t know what to do with s14 (imo humans as the big bad makes most sense to finish up on to really subvert the start of the show and emphasis all the social and psychological themes of the show), but I can go along with it if that’s what is necessary production wise even if it doesn’t make a ton of sense narratively, because that’s the nature of shows like this that sometimes are never ending and sometimes get randomly cancelled like Angel halfway through telling a story so it just doesn’t make sense (e.g. Fred). But him being inherently evil is just so bleurgh and against the whole principles of the show, just, no.

3. I think absolutely Jack will be attracted to Sam in that they are mirrors of each other and they will have loads of interactions that will be all about Sam forgiving himself in what he sees in Jack, understanding that he sometimes had no control, no choice over what happened but also then when he did, helping Jack make good decisions instead of the bad ones he made (demon blood, Ruby etc) and thus in his own mind ‘making up’ for them and redeeming himself.

I keep banging on about it but “see one, do one, teach one” is my mantra with Jack. Through this all of TFW will get towards their endgames imo, through teaching Jack lessons that are particular to them (Cas humanity, belonging and self worth, Sam to defy Lucifer and self forgiveness, Dean to defy your father/heritage and self acceptance).

Sorry… I am passionate about Jack and kind of flail but all the stuff we have so far about s13 confirms my wild speculation so far so I’m trying to be calm and collected whilst also being super hyped and waving my arms in the air going “SEE?!!!”. I’m excited to see what we are right and wrong about, I’m sure there will be a ton of twists and turns and a few “wow, didn’t see that coming!” moments, but as for now I’m just super excited to see how they take this and relate it to TFW’s (imo) positive endgames :D
