THURSDAY HERO: Faye Schulman
Faye Schulman was a young Jewish photographer in Poland who became a resistance fighter after her family was slaughtered by the Germans. For the next two years, she took pictures of what she witnessed, leaving an extensive photographic record for posterity.
Born Faigel Lazebnik in 1919, she was one of seven children in an Orthodox Jewish family in Lenin, a small village in Poland. Known as Faye, she learned four languages: Yiddish at home, Polish at school, Hebrew in religious school, and Russian among the non-Jewish townspeople. Her brother Moshe was a professional photographer and she worked as his assistant, developing a keen eye and a talent for photography. When Moshe moved to another town, Faigel took over his business.
After the Germans invaded Lenin in 1941, they forced the town’s Jews into a squalid ghetto. On August 14, 1942, the Nazis “liquidated” the Lenin ghetto by brutally murdering 1,850 Jews, including Faye’s parents, sisters, and brother. Only 26 Jews were spared because the Nazis could make use of their skills. Faye was ordered to develop photographs of the massacre that claimed the lives of her family as well as almost everyone she knew. She secretly made extra copies of the pictures and kept them to bear testimony to Nazi crimes against humanity.
Soon after, Faye escaped from the Nazis and joined the Molotava Brigade, a group of Russian resistance fighters in the forest of Belarus. She said, “This was the only way I could fight back and avenge my family.” They were known as “partisans” – an insurgent militia group opposing an occupation army. Despite rampant antisemitism in the group, she was allowed to join because she had some basic medical skills learned from her late brother-in-law, who had been a doctor in Lenin. Faye became the group’s nurse, serving alongside the resident doctor, a veterinarian. For almost two years, Faye dressed fighters’ wounds and did whatever she could for sick and injured fighters, despite a lack of medical equipment. She participated in armed raids, later remembering “When it was time to be hugging a boyfriend, I was hugging a rifle. Now I said to myself, my life is changed. I learned how to look after the wounded, I even learned how to make operations.”
Faye’s partisan brigade raided her hometown of Lenin, during which the resistance fighters acquired food, weapons and supplies. As they passed her childhood home, Faye urged her fellow partisans to burn it to the ground, which they did. “I won’t be living here. The family’s killed. To leave it for the enemy? I said right away: Burn it!”
Faye found her old photographic equipment, and brought it back to their forest encampment. For the next two years, Faye documented the dangerous existence of anti-Nazi partisans. It was vitally important to her because as she later said, “I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.”
Faye’s resistance group was liberated by the Soviets in July 1944. After the war ended, she was overjoyed to find that her brother Moshe had also survived and had been part of another resistance group. Faye and Moshe were the only survivors of their family of nine. Soon after Faye married Morris Schulman, who’d fought alongside Moshe. They decided to make a new life in Palestine, then occupied by the British, who made it difficult if not impossible for war-scarred Holocaust survivors to enter the land. For two years the Schulmans were stuck in a displaced persons camp in Germany, waiting for the opportunity to immigrate. They helped smuggle arms into Palestine to support the Jews fighting for independence. In 1947 Faye became pregnant, and they needed someplace safe to live. They were able to get visas to Canada, and settled in Toronto, where they ran a family business and raised two children. In 1995, Faye published a book about her experience as an anti-Nazi resistance fighter: “A Partisan’s Memoir: Woman of the Holocaust.”
Faye died on April 24, 2021, surrounded by her family, at age 101. Sadly, the last few years of her life saw an upsurge of antisemitism worldwide. Faye left an inspiring message for young people today: “To Jewish kids I would like to say – be proud to be Jewish. To non-Jewish kids I would like to say – if there is a war and you have to fight, fight for freedom and don’t be ashamed to be in the army.”
For saving lives, battling Nazis, and leaving a photographic record so the horrors of the Holocaust would not be forgotten, we honor Faye Lazebnik Schulman as this week’s Thursday Hero.

here’s a band I came up with in my head while listening to a song. They’re completely fictional btw. They’re inspired by The Move and The Beatles.
The Inserts (formed in 1965 in Birmingham, England)
Members:
Johnny Everglades (b. July 15, 1945) - Leader of the band and lead vocals. He doesn’t play anything. Went to primary and secondary school with Carter Greensfield and formed a couple of bands with him while they were still in school. He has brown hair.
Carter Greensfield (b. August 4, 1945) - guitar. He has brown hair as well.
Gevy Levy (b. November 25, 1944) - drums. His name is often misspelled in the newspapers. He got used to it. He has mousey hair
Troy McSorrow (b. March 14, 1946) - Bass. He has blonde hair
Roger Clearing (b. December 30, 1947) - Guitar. Youngest and newest member of the band. He has light brown and curly hair and puffy hair, although his curls don’t really show since his hair is so short. He’ll probably grow it out in either 1968 or 1969
they play this song (this was the song that inspired me btw)
youtube
in the music video for this song, I imagine Johnny Everglades to wear leather gloves and black eyeliner. And I imagine Carter Greensfield to wear red-tinted circular glasses.
they’re all wearing colored suits with the same hairstyles. Same as this photo of the move:
Tumblr media
towards the end of the music video, Johnny starts destroying the equipment with an axe and Troy sets the equipment on fire. Then they take a bow and leave.
The video takes place in August, 1967.
Let me know what you guys think!!

Margaret Ives Abbott (June 15, 1878 – June 10, 1955) was an American amateur golfer. She was the first American woman to win an Olympic event: the women's golf tournament at the 1900 Summer Olympics.
Lilias Eveline Armstrong (29 September 1882 – 9 December 1937) was an English phonetician. She worked at University College London, where she attained the rank of reader. Armstrong is most known for her work on English intonation as well as the phonetics and tone of Somali and Kikuyu. Her book on English intonation, written with Ida C. Ward, was in print for 50 years. Armstrong also provided some of the first detailed descriptions of tone in Somali and Kikuyu.
Morris Berg (March 2, 1902 – May 29, 1972) was an American catcher and coach in Major League Baseball, who later served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Although he played 15 seasons in the major leagues, almost entirely for four American League teams, Berg was never more than an average player and was better known for being "the brainiest guy in baseball." Casey Stengel once described Berg as "the strangest man ever to play baseball".
Edward Dando (c. 1803 – 28 August 1832) was a thief who came to public notice in Britain because of his unusual habit of overeating at food stalls and inns, and then revealing that he had no money to pay. Although the fare he consumed was varied, he was particularly fond of oysters, having once eaten 25 dozen of them with a loaf and a half of bread with butter.
Harold Francis Davidson (14 July 1875 – 30 July 1937), generally known as the Rector of Stiffkey, was a Church of England priest who in 1932, after a public scandal, was convicted of immorality by a church court and defrocked. Davidson strongly protested his innocence and to raise funds for his reinstatement campaign he exhibited himself in a barrel on the Blackpool seafront. He performed in other sideshows of a similar nature, and died after being attacked by a lion in whose cage he was appearing in a seaside spectacular.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over one hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson's influential book Silent Spring (1962). Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, enabling her to advance her causes.
George Went Hensley (May 2, 1881 – July 25, 1955) was an American Pentecostal minister best known for popularizing the practice of snake handling. A native of rural Appalachia, Hensley experienced a religious conversion around 1910: on the basis of his interpretation of scripture, he came to believe that the New Testament commanded all Christians to handle venomous snakes.
Margaret Alice Murray FSA Scot FRAI (13 July 1863 – 13 November 1963) was a British-Indian Egyptologist, archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, and folklorist who was born in India. The first woman to be appointed as a lecturer in archaeology in the United Kingdom, she worked at University College London (UCL) from 1898 to 1935. She served as president of the Folklore Society from 1953 to 1955, and published widely over the course of her career.
Dom Pedro Afonso (19 July 1848 – 10 January 1850) was the Prince Imperial and heir apparent to the throne of the Empire of Brazil. Born at the Palace of São Cristóvão in Rio de Janeiro, he was the second son and youngest child of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Dona Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies, and thus a member of the Brazilian branch of the House of Braganza. Pedro Afonso was seen as vital to the future viability of the monarchy, which had been put in jeopardy by the death of his older brother Dom Afonso almost three years earlier.
Elias Abraham Rosenberg (Hebrew: אליאס אברהם רוזנברג; Hawaiian: Eliaka Apelahama Loselabeka; c. 1810 – July 10, 1887) was a Jewish immigrant to the United States who, despite a questionable past, became a trusted friend and adviser of King Kalākaua of Hawaii. Regarded as eccentric, he lived in San Francisco in the 1880s and worked as a peddler selling illegal lottery tickets. In 1886, he traveled to Hawaii and performed as a fortune-teller. He came to Kalākaua's attention, and endeared himself to the king with favorable predictions about the future of Hawaii. Rosenberg received royal appointments to several positions: kahuna-kilokilo (royal soothsayer), customs appraiser, and guard. He was given lavish gifts by the king, but was mistrusted by other royal advisers and satirized in the Hawaiian press.

HAPPY PAKISTANI INDEPENDENCE DAY: AUGUST 14, 1947
Pakistani Independence Day is observed annually on August 14 to commemorate the day Pakistan achieved independence from the British Raj in August of 1947. Pakistani leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah addressed the nation, "you are free; you are free to go to your temples. You are free to go to your mosques or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste or creed—that has nothing to do with the business of the state."

"In the center foreground of this 1953 hangar photo is the YF-84A (NACA 134/Air Force 45-59490) used for vortex generator research. It arrived on November 28, 1949, and departed on April 21, 1954. Beside it is the third D-558-1 aircraft (NACA 142/Navy 37972). This aircraft was used for a total of 78 transonic research flights from April 1949 to June 1954. It replaced the second D-558-1, lost in the crash which killed Howard Lilly. Just visible on the left edge is the nose of the first D-558-2 (NACA 143/Navy 37973). Douglas turned the aircraft over to NACA on August 31, 1951, after the contractor had completed its initial test flights. NACA only made a single flight with the aircraft, on September 17, 1956, before the program was cancelled. In the center of the photo is the B-47A (NACA 150/Air Force 49-1900). The B-47 jet bomber, with its thin, swept-back wings, and six podded engines, represented the state of the art in aircraft design in the early 1950s. The aircraft undertook a number of research activities between May 1953 and its 78th and final research flight on November 22, 1957. The tests showed that the aircraft had a buffeting problem at speeds above Mach 0.8. Among the pilots who flew the B-47 were later X-15 pilots Joe Walker, A. Scott Crossfield, John B. McKay, and Neil A. Armstrong.
On the right side of the B-47 is NACA's X-1 (Air Force 46-063). The second XS-1 aircraft built, it was fitted with a thicker wing than that on the first aircraft, which had exceeded Mach 1 on October 14, 1947. Flight research by NACA pilots indicated that this thicker wing produced 30 percent more drag at transonic speeds compared to the thinner wing on the first X-1. After a final flight on October 23, 1951, the aircraft was grounded due to the possibility of fatigue failure of the nitrogen spheres used to pressurize the fuel tanks. At the time of this photo, in 1953, the aircraft was in storage. In 1955, the aircraft was extensively modified, becoming the X-1E."

I cannot think of any questions ummm. What is your William's options on Showbiz and Chuck e Cheese
How did the first springlock failure affect him (mentally and/or physically)
Any fun facts about your au?
Halloween store butterfly skeleton

i think william would have mixed feelings. like oh yay more appreciation for animatronics. but like i bet he'd think they suck because they cant free roam and he'd think his animatronics are WAY better than theirs. while also being jealous about their success at the same time because he's an envious little freak (affectionate)
and oh i love thinking about how the springlock incident affected him! i'd say its the #1 reason for his fear of death, because he came so close to it and. that was obviously quite frightening to see how easily his life could slip away. definitely fucked him up quite a bit both physically and mentally. as for physically i like the idea he has some kind of chronic pain from it because theres no way he came outta that with no lasting damage. he also probably makes an effort to always keep his scars hidden. for fun facts i dont really have anything specific but maybe birthdays count as a fun fact!
William’s Birthday: September 19th, 1947 (36 in 1983)
Michael’s Birthday: June 22nd, 1969 (14 in 1983)
Elizabeth’s Birthday: September 1974 (9 in 1983)
(CC) Evan’s Birthday: August 1977 (6 in 1983)

Remembering #JuthikaRoy on her 10th death anniversary (05/02/14), the iconic bhajan vocalist celebrated as the modern-day #Meera during the pre-independence era. Renowned for her soul-stirring Meerabai bhajans such as "Ghunghat ke pat khol" and "Pag Ghunghru Baandh Meera Naachi Re," Juthika Roy carved a niche for herself in the hearts of many.
Her melodious renditions won the hearts of Hindi and Bengali cinema audiences alike, making her a celebrated figure in her time. Her voice captivated notable personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were avid admirers of her work.
On the historic day of August 15, 1947, as Nehru journeyed from Teen Murti Bhavan to the Red Fort to mark India's independence, Roy's bhajans filled the air, broadcast live by All India Radio. After her performance, at Nehru's request, she continued to sing until the national flag was hoisted, adding a memorable soundtrack to a pivotal moment in India's history.
In her reflections, Roy shared an anecdote about Sarojini Naidu revealing how Gandhi found solace in her bhajans during his incarceration in Pune, making her music an integral part of his daily prayer meetings. She even had the honor of performing privately for Gandhi at his residence.
Embarking on her musical journey at just 12 years old with her first album, Roy was mentored by the renowned rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Her collaborations with the esteemed Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta, especially the revered Narayan stuti "Narayan Shriman Narayan," continue to resonate with listeners.
Roy's versatile talent extended beyond Hindi and Bengali, as she lent her voice to songs in various languages, including Urdu and Tamil.
On February 5, 2014, the music world lost this luminary in Kolkata after a long illness. As we commemorate her legacy, we hope for her soul to find everlasting peace.
