So even though the troubleshooting list from Obsidian support was for crashing not getting stuck, I’ve been running through things to double check. My computer stats are good, I verified the game files, Windows is up to date, it doesn’t look like I have one of the processors that might require a BIOS update. I just need to check the graphics card drivers again and if that’s not the problem(somehow. mysteriously. even though I already checked those twice), I can email back that I tried the whole list and Avowed still won’t run. :))

The article was published a day after the Cyber Security Association of China (CSAC) called for an extensive evaluation of Intel’s systems, alleging that the US semiconductor giant’s chips posed a threat of “frequent vulnerabilities and high failure rates”.

In a WeChat post on Wednesday, the CSAC said Intel’s central processing units (CPUs) had exhibited multiple vulnerabilities, including issues that have led to video game crashes.

The association singled out several Intel chip security vulnerabilities in games such as GhostRace, NativeBHI and Downfall, which it said allowed attackers to access sensitive information through so-called speculative execution flaws.

The CSAC has also criticised Intel for slow responses to prior security breach complaints, and for potentially enabling a secret back door that could be exploited to launch cyberattacks or access information without user consent.

Do you know if the thing about Intel 13 and 14th gen CPUs dying is true?

Yeah there's a major flaw in some very high-end 13th and 14th gen processors. If you just got an off-the shelf computer (not a gaming computer, not a high end workstation) you're probably fine. If you got a high-end processor but are not having issues with this, Intel has released a patch. If you ARE having problems, Intel extended the warranty of those processors and you should replace the processor.

It is a big deal, however it is a big deal that impacts a small but disproportionately loud subset of computer users, so if your computer cost less than a thousand dollars basically you're cool, this isn't going to be an issue for you.

Okay Computers for the week of 12/22/2024

For some reason, all the good deals I found this week were Dells.

New Desktop: Lenovo IdeaCenter compact desktop with a 14th gen i5 processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and Windows 11 Home for $549

New Laptop: 15.6" Dell Inspiron with a 12th-gen i5, 512GB SSD, 32GB RAM, and Win11 Pro for $489 - that is actually a smoking hot deal but the processor is juuuuuust at the border of what I'm willing to recommend for a new purchase.

Refurbished Desktop: Dell Vostro with a 10th gen i5, 32GB RAM, a 480GB SSD, and Win 11 Pro for $225.

Refurbished Laptop: 15.6" Dell Latitude with a 10th gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Win11 Pro for $199.

Also I don't generally make a specific business computer recommendation but if you are a small business looking for a decent desktop rec this Lenovo ideacenter with a 14th gen i5, 1tb ssd, 32GB RAM, and Win11Pro for about $680 is a good deal (though if you're looking at lenovo for business generally I'd say aim more toward thinkcenters, this is a budget option).

Almost a full year of not being able to properly use my newly built PC. First, because of Intel's 13th and 14th gen processor issues and now because of a Windows update??? 😂

I planned out and created sims for a whole medieval thing in the sims 4 (way back in 2023! 😮). Hopefully, I can actually get to play it and fully experience the drama someday, but at the moment if I look too hard at my computer it blue screens. It's quite miserable.

But while I can't play, I can plan and plan I have.
