Reposted from @collegenutritionist You’ve probably seen me mention my rule of thumb #1starchPerDay - and if you’re not a member of Best Body you may be confused as to what that is! • • #1starchPerDay is a rule of thumb - it’s my recommendation, for easy, healthy, low carb living 🙌🏼 that helps me & thousands of others manage their weight, and it’s especially helpful for those who are frustrated that they’re eating healthfully and exercising, but not seeing results • • A serving is about 120 calories - which is about 1/2 cup cooked grain (like rice or quinoa), 3/4 cup starchy veg (like corn) and beans, or 1 thick slice of bread or medium tortilla, or serving of crackers like in this picture! 👆🏼 • • Fruit is separate - I also stick with a serving of fruit per day! I get the majority of the nutrients found in fruit from veggies instead • • The reasoning behind this? Finding the low carb approach 10 years ago has helped me EASILY lose those last 5 pounds, and keep that weight off for good. The satiety factor is critical here - we’re more satiated on protein & fats than we are on carbohydrates - so it’s SO MUCH EASIER to keep calories in check • • AND! A low carb approach is associated with: improved HDL & LDL cholesterol levels, decreased blood sugar, decreased tummy fat, and 2-3x more weight loss at first compared to low fat diets • • So why 1 starch per day?? This way, along with 1 fruit, we can still easily stick with the low carb approach, but ALSO make room for our favorite foods - pizza, pasta, ice cream, dessert! SUPER FILLING way to build your meals (typically lunch & dinner) - if you need more food, please add to it! • The “formula” is listed above 👆🏼 2+ cups of veggies 1 normal serving of protein And 100-200 calories of fats • • Some foods are both protein and fats - nuts, seeds, and dairy - there’s no “rule” as to whether one of these foods counts towards either group - just do what works for you for that meal! • • What about vegetarian protein sources like beans? Are they starches or protein? It really depends on you!
