‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Behind the Scenes: How Fashion Defines Each Character (PHOTOS)

Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey (2011-2016) [mod note: on PBS in the US], set that upstairs-downstairs series at a palatial British estate on the eve of World War I. He moved his newest costume drama Stateside to the streets of New York City. Set in the late 1800s, The Gilded Age, which has its second-season premiere on Sunday, October 29 on HBO (streaming on Max), pits the new money of railroad barons against the old money of New York society. The powerful fight for control of the city and use their wealth to measure social success. And dressing for success was its own full-time occupation.
When researching women’s fashion in 1800s New York, the show’s costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone saw one thing clearly: “Their life was a catwalk. There was this enormous excitement” when the ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Her job was to recreate that excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age.
Fashion as a Sign of Status
Who’s doing all this promenading? Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrived in NYC with no money and was taken in by her aunts Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), both living off an inheritance. Then the newly affluent Russells—headed by railroad baron George (Morgan Spector) and wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who is determined to break into polite society—moved in across the street.

The frill thrills continue in Season 2, especially in a pivotal garden party scene (pictured below) that TV Insider observed being filmed in September 2022 at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. (Westbury House was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie at his steel company.) On set was Fellowes, whose smart black suit and tie were the only dark hues around.

Historically Accurate Costumes
It’s a testament to the wardrobe department that the stunning colors of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Despite the sepia-toned images in history books, Walicka-Maimone says, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She has a library of more than 35,000 reference images to prove it.
“It’s shocking to our modern eye to see the explosion of color from that period,” she said. Production designer Bob Shaw (who won an Emmy for his work on Gilded Age) was present to share his creative process, which, just as Walicka-Maimone described of her own work, is “deeply steeped in history.”

He does note that, when deciding between “what is correct and what feels correct,” the latter always wins. Creative liberties are taken to “build [character] histories into the costumes,” Walicka-Maimone added.
A Garden Party to Remember
Take Brit newcomers Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr) and his daughter, Frances (Matilda Lawler), for example. Nephew by marriage to Baranski’s Agnes, Dashiell requires more “toned-down” attire suitable for social outings, which contrasts with Season 1’s primarily business and formal menswear.

Dashiell must escort Frances through society in his late wife’s absence. One consideration for Walicka-Maimone: “This is a girl who doesn’t have a mother, so there’s probably extra care from all the other family members in [dressing her],” she said.
Meanwhile, Marian, who Jacobson said is “shining this season and sees herself in [younger] Frances,” will be more open to a strategic marriage. Marian’s “not necessarily cynical” after being jilted by Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) in last season’s finale, the actress continued, but the heartbreak gives her a “spice and edge.”
Don’t count out the possibility of a romance with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), son of the railroad titan, which was teased last year. Jacobson shared: “They will definitely continue to deepen their friendship.” Old money and new money unite!

Saw your newest vid and shaking your hand about meleeframe. Most people believe warframe is a third person shoot however in my eyes, this is wrong it's a hack and slash.
Anyway!!! I've only got like 200hours, started in like 2016 but my computer couldn't run it well so I had to give up until more recently when I got a new one, so my ability to KNOW thing in game is rather limited. Regardless I'm slowly trying to figure out how to turn khora into a blender.
Lovingly calling it my feral berserker build. Baseline I'm getting using hunter mod set and pack leader mod (<- that's already made it so venny is undying), the hope is i can build into something where i can chargein and beat things with a stick till it stops moving without getting myself turned into strawberry jam. Haven't settled on what weapons I'm doing yet, but I'm more the type that prefers meandering through the game anyway.
Will this build be good? Probably not. Will I find it entertaining for dicking around? Oh yes definitely. And that all you can really ask for.
if you're interested in making venari go apeshit, might i recommend... a silly little kitgun arcane?
it gets a little dumb. unfortunately it seems best with temporary summons like caliban's squad which snapshot the buff on entry.
that said, khora also gets to enjoy the helminth with impunity because subsuming over venari just locks her into attack posture.
abilities that let you imbue you or your allies with elemental damage are particularly funny on venari & whatever other companions you're bringing to the fight.
for maximum flavor i have been using my khora with verdilac & the full nira mod load out to make her slam attacks horrifying, also.
they fixed the damage formula on slam attacks a few months ago and, oh! it's a treat with tennokai heavy attacks!

I can't help but find Ash's comments under the newest MiMo (the one where Yolanda is upside down) a little grating, but mostly instilling in me a deep sense of pity & some confusion.
If they'd been planning this plot beat for 8 years, that puts it in 2016, during which Sister Claire has a lengthy chapter with the side-cast exploring an abandoned city to find special scrap metal for Olga that goes nowhere & develops almost nothing. The MiMo's explain the fact that the world is post-apocalyptic, while it's nice to see it depicted visually that wasn't really needed narratively.
They just as easily could have written it so the technology Olga needs to walk could be found in a pile of scrap in field somewhere & not an abandoned city they have to do a whole side-quest-trek to get into. Or just make it so regular assistive devices made of regular metal still work on her!
It's beautifully drawn & provides SOME bits of plot I guess but it like, takes so long to get there & is annoying to read even years out now where I can just rush through it & not have to wait for updates.
The whole city thing could have been cut. SO MUCH COULD HAVE BEEN CUT! If they knew where they were going, they didn't have to meander so much in the inbetween. We could have gotten to these other plot points sooner & these poor creatives could have moved on from this story to rest.
Great example. I think that plot arc is right around the height of the authors setting up way too many things they'd have to come back to later. It's like they were in way too deep to realize the terrible things they had wrought on their future selves. It's kind of fascinating, in a very sad way.

I try to avoid death in my games when it comes to my favourite Sims.
2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match?
At the moment it’s more maxis match, mostly with clay hair but for my Sim Hendrik I also like to use Alpha hairs sometimes.
3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?
Never. I let them do what ever they want.
4. Do you use move objects?
In my test hood all the time when it comes to picture taking, but in normal gameplay I don’t use it that often.
5. Favorite mod?
Can’t say, I have way to many which I always need in my game.

It’s always with Pets, no matter which Sims part it is. ^^ I need pets in my games. :)

I’m bad at building worlds or houses- I’m mostly in for gameplay or CC testing in my test hood.

My first love was TS1 and now it’s TS2. The other two are only fun for me since I recreated Hendrik.

I guess this picture answer it very well. The one in black is how my original Hendrik Hupfner looked like, that’s how my game 10 years ago looked like, with glittery skin, more realistic hair and eyes. The other version of Hendrik is how he mostly looks like in my TS2-game, more maxis match skin and eyes, tattoo boxes (who ever invented them, they are the reason why Hendrik finally can look like he always should: with lots of tattoos. ^^)

I have one but I gave it to only one person on here, I have nothing to offer over there.

There are so many wonderful people that make great CC that I love in my game. To name everyone would take years!

I sometimes use Reshade (different sets) but never for CC previews! Next to that I only crop my pictures, that’s all.

Honorable mentions include The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (or the KH series in general, really), Portal 2, Kirby Planet Robobot, Dark Souls 1 & 3.
5) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
I played both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask last year on my 3DS (with a QoL mod for Majora installed), and while I kinda liked Ocarina and mainly respect it for its legacy, I absolutely adored Majora.
I couldn't put the game down, I 100%'d it, I adore the three days mechanic, I fucking love Termina and its atmosphere and just the whole creepy-melanchonic-odd tones the whole game has. Especially with the masks.
Not to mention facing quite literally impossible odds while everything is working against you over, and over, and over trying to stop the moon from destroying the world, with Link never getting any recognition for his deeds. It just hits a lot harder than the usual fated battle against Ganon because if anything, this game is a desperate struggle against Termina's fate.
Also I just found the game a lot of fun and is currently my favorite 3D Zelda game.
4) Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Well, of course Echoes is here!
It's my favorite FE and the direction I'd love for the series to go, it's simple yet so fun and Valentia and its characters are wonderful. Definitely the game in the series that's most dear to my heart.
3) CrossCode
I only played it a few months ago, but CrossCode quickly became one of my favorite games and my absolute favorite of the games I played in 2022 and I am begging everyone to go play it
It's an incredibly polished Action RPG with Zelda-like dungeons set in a futuristic MMO (although the game itself is single-player), the gameplay is incredibly fun and the story is even better, it kept me absolutely hooked for months and the characters are wonderful, especially the protagonist Lea, who's both canonically mute and arguably the best character of the entire game. Also she's my newest blorbo.
Also the themes almost seem tailor-made for me to obsess over and just AAAAGH GO PLAY CROSSCODE ALREADY
2) Undertale
...I mean. Does this game need any introductions? I feel everything that could be said about Undertale has already been said.
I played this game in 2016/2017 and it stuck with me hard, and after these many years the attachment has only gotten higher thanks to Deltarune, obsessing over theories and details with my UTDR mutuals and etching some of my favorite tropes (like symbiotic posession) into my heart. I even made some new friends because of it!
I have a huge feeling Deltarune is gonna dethrone it once the full game comes out if Ch2 is any indication, but Undertale will always be special to me. 1) Mother 3
Ah, Mother 3.
This game is very much in a Majora's Mask situation where its predecessor is more popular and beloved but while I respect the legacy it left behind I loved the sequel far more.
Gameplay-wise the game fixes almost every issue I had play Earthbound and makes it a lot more fast-paced and fun, but the story is very much what makes Mother 3 the masterpiece it is.
Beside the themes sadly becoming more and more relevant by the day, Mother 3 has often been described as one of the most heartwrenching videogames of all time and for good reason.
I almost never cry but the ending left me about to sob, and that was with me getting spoiled.
I can't recommend this game enough. Sure, it's not been localized, but grab a ROM and the unofficial translation patch and you're good to go. Just play Earthbound first.

furby 2012s+furby booms (BASICALLY the same thing, furby booms are more buggy and have slightly different personalities but also come in pretty designs) are the ones w uhhh the electronic light-up eyes, but they’re less easily modded and make a kind of high pitched snappin sound like old tvs do, to communicate with the app!! UNFORTUNATELY PERSONALLY IT GIVES ME A HEADACHE but theyre still cool, i respect them!!


FURBY connects are the newest one from 2016 and the latest one made, and they’re SO SO SOFT ITS NUTS and their eyes are SO expressive!!! they only come in three solid colors though and their functionality is pretty limited because they’re supposed to be used with a discontinued bluetooth app, but theyre still so cute!!

For me, that’s no different. I entered into this year thinking that it would be an improvement on the hardships I faced in the late 2010s. Not so. Since 2016 (with the exception of 2017 which was a pretty good for me all things considered), I’ve gone through a rough patch, dealing with stress and anxiety stemming from real life things and online things.
For some of you in the Astro Boy fandom, you’ll know that January 2020 was my final active month in the Astro Boy Fans Discord server. Having dealt with numerous bad members in the server had taken it’s toll on my mental health, and I made the decision to enter a second hiatus in February 2020 (the first one occurred in August and September 2019), and eventually I made the hard decision in June 2020 to pass on ownership of the Astro Boy Fans Discord server to one of the best internet friends I’ve ever had: Corimii. From what I’ve heard, things have gone well in the server since my absence. The second half of my 2020 has been a time of healing from some of the events that took place in that server.
I have a lot of good memories from the Astro Boy Fans Discord server. The first year in particular (2017) was a great time, but I was able to meet a lot of great people through that server over time. I wish things could have turned out differently with that server, but I think I managed to salvage things the best I could. I left the server in a good spot, and the ownership and mod team are one of the best you could ask for. Already being an administrator on Astro Boy Online Forums, I don’t think I could ever own a server like Astro Boy Fans ever again; splitting time being a leader in two different Astro Boy online discussion groups was fairly stressful for me.
Outside of Astro Boy, I’ve also gone through bouts of loneliness this year on top of my stress and anxiety. I will admit that I’m not too happy with my current real life living situation. It could be much worse, but I hope to make a better life for myself in the near future.
I am also sad to share that I did get the virus in early December: my Dad works a job where he is required to report in person to work most of the time. Someone in the building he works in got the virus and a few people from that building, including my Dad, got the virus. He brought it home, and despite wearing a mask and social distancing from him, I still ended up getting the virus as well. It was rough, and having had it I know that many people would not survive the symptoms that I had, but my Dad and I are fortunate to have survived the virus and we are both healthy now.
But not everything about 2020 was bad: pre-pandemic, I was able to see family on my Dad’s side, including my grandmother who may not be around much longer. It was nice to see them again.
I also got to see my Mom’s side of the family though under not-so-good circumstances: family drama caused my extended family to move my grandparents out of a toxic situation with a couple other family members of mine. I won’t get into specifics, but we were able to put them into a much better situation which overall seems to have improved their physical and mental health.
Obviously I didn’t get to do much this year. Funnily enough, the day before the pandemic was declared, I saw the newest BNHA movie with my sister in theaters. It was a fun movie to go see, and I hope theaters, as well as everything else, can open up again soon.
To those of you who have chosen to read through all this, thank you. I know some people who follow me will read the first sentence of this post and scroll on by, ignoring it.
2020 has been a rough year for us all; it’s not quite the start to the 2020s that we wanted. We will be dealing with the consequences of 2020 (and technically late 2019) into 2021, so things won’t magically get better as we head into January. With that said though, it’s good to put 2020 behind us. 2020 was one of the worst years in human history, up there with 536 AD, 1918, 1929, 1968, and 2001.
For those of you that I regularly chat with online, thank you for continuing to stick around, even if you are currently primarily interacting with another friend group.
2021 will have bad things happen, but don’t lose hope. We were able to get through 2020, and we are fully capable of getting through 2021. With that said, let’s all hope for a better year.

Doom Eternal

I beat Doom Eternal within the first month it was out, so after reaching its glorious but predictable ending, I decided that I would marinate on the game before writing anything about it. I also decided to avoid another playthrough, even though the game is enjoyable enough to warrant one, especially to a higher difficulty where the game is sure to shine.
I wanted to cleanse my gamer pallet a bit, so I played some games in my backlog, letting my time with Doom Eternal sink in my subconscious. There it has stayed, untouched and without as much as a recollection other than to chuckle at the memes that have resulted from the game’s rather brief story moments.
This is my current relationship with Doom Eternal, it is something I experienced at one point that allows me to make inside jokes with other people, but for some reason, I don't feel any call to revisit the game, at least not until the story DLC comes out.
Multiplayer was fun, but it lost its luster real quick. Compared to the original Doom's cooperative multiplayer and Death Match modes, Battle Mode feels a little lacking, even for as good as it is. Which is a shame, because I could see Battlemode being really good, it's just something that needs a little community and dev support backing it to become something a little more lasting, and I am not sure if either faction is up for that.
Doom Eternal is a great game, but if I am comparing it to the sheer cultural force of what Doom 95 was, I quickly find that while Doom Eternal is a great tribute to the house that Carmack and Romero built, it feels like it's presenting an interpretation of what Doom was and can be while missing the core beats of why Doom 95 was such a juggernaut.
To me, Doom Eternal is the Triple-A conclusion of Brutal Doom, the mod most notoriously known for upping the gore level to an already bloody game, so this:

Now I got nothing against Brutal Doom. I enjoy it, I enjoy the power fantasy it provides. Everything it does, it does on top of everything the original Doom presents. It leaves nothing on the floor, it adds to the notion of what Doom is. But Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are both games that try to copy this and push it into the modern age with top of the art visuals and buttery smooth gameplay. What is presented is game development on the highest level, to deny the game at least that, would be a crime. It’s good. But it’s not Doom 95 good. Doom 2016 already hit the speed bump. As good as Snap Map is or was, it can’t hold a candle to the various map making programs that have held up some of the best work from the various map makers from the Doom community.
Having a community able to make content for a game that pushes it’s lifespan to two decades and a half, is no joking matter. It's the life blood of the Doom community and it’s the biggest element missing from the newest Doom Trilogy. That alone, is probably the sole reason that Doom Eternal and 2016 don’t stay in my mind for very long, the sheer adrenaline rush of both games means that no stone is unturned, so when you hit the end of the ride, there is no reason to go back unless you want the best challenge the games can offer in the hardest difficulty, after that, you have seen it all. Compare that the original Doom, and you quickly see how Doom 95 became a canvas for those eager to see how far they could push the earliest mapping tools. To this day, there is nothing that impresses me more than Doom maps.

As well intentioned as it was, Snap Map felt like a slap in the face. For some reason the devs at Id thought the community would be happy with a Halo Forge equivalent map maker for Doom, without even bothering to consider that map making for the original doom was entirely built out of the community, it was never something offered from the original devs apart from Carmack giving his blessing for people to mess with the original code, probably the single greatest gift a creator can grant his fans. I played with Snap Map, but to me, it was not interesting, it offered little compared to the sheer amount of accomplishment I would gain in actually taking the time to learn how to map for the original Doom, so it’s no surprise that Snap Map is missing from Doom Eternal.
People have asked id about expanding on mapping and modding in general, and id’s official response thus far is that Doom Eternal would be too complicated to launch with mods, which to me, just sounds like such a bullshit response to the demand. Now I get that there may be some person reading this and thinking that holding a grudge against the modern Doom Trilogy (You know they are gonna do a third game...come on this is the game industry...) simply because it does not have a way to make maps and mods is silly and I get that. I also understand that using the tools to make a map for Doom 95 is way quicker than trying to do it for a game like Doom Eternal. But that does not mean people would not love to try, that there would not be some super dedicated members of the community that would not figure it out and make awesome stuff, or people forming super modding teams to create awesome projects because those people exist, and those are the people that should be encouraged to enter the game industry because those are gonna be the most talented people with the most passion, or at least that’s what I think anyway. Maybe that is my hidden gripe with Doom Eternal, it's a great game that shows the opulence of modern games, but also highlights everything the industry gave up to get here. The game pokes at my suspicion that there will be less people like John Carmack, and not more of them, and that games and how they are enjoyed will become more insular, and less about community.

reddit is starting to suck reallly hard for me because i envision it as a forum-type site. my friend once complimented me on my “Reddiquite” but it’s just because i’ve been holed up in the MLPArena since 2016. for the most part it’s good for news and helping people out because the posting is a lot more involved than it is on twitter (which sucks even harder) or tumblr, but following the animal crossing subreddit up until launch sucks harder every day.
the r/new-horizons subreddit is combating the issue i’m having by making megathreads. this is a good way to get people who will only post “i’m excited for the game!/sad i didn’t get the switch!/confused about how multiplayer works” (all of which have been exhausted as topics) corralled into one section of the site.
but the actual r/animalcrossing isn’t doing anything with it. i like to view newest posts first and i saw, no kidding, FIVE posts in a row talking about how NH is now avaliable for pre-order on the eshop. we only need ONE post, none of these are distinguishable from one another. i feel like in forums, people will at least look to see if a thread has been started on a certain topic, or mods may be more strict with closing duplicate topics or merging them for the sake of making it easy to find information. i do not see this effort being taken on r/animalcrossing, and this is why we hvae 10 posts a day “can i still pre-order the switch?”
long shot but i feel like it is the fault of sites such as twitter which make it hard to search for information. newer internet users may not feel like googling or using the search function on reddit to seek information first, and will instead just ask questions outright. not neccessarily a bad thing as some information is hard to find but i feel like we could combat the repeat posts asking the same question over and over

Sims 4 Tray Importer Mac Issues & How To Solve Them (2019/2020)
For the longest time I not only wanted to sort out my CC because I have a hell lot of it, but I also wanted to upload my Sims & Lots/Rooms here. The problem however was, that I’ve always had issues with the Tray Importer Mod for MacBook & since there is no similar mod that can do such a thing, not even Sims 4 Studio, I couldn’t do what I desired without this lovely creation.
So, if you’re a Mac user like me with problems on how to get S4TI to work, I may be able to help you ...
So far I’ve had two different issues with S4TI that I’ve seen with other people as well & could fix:
The mod couldn’t locate/load my library and/or game folder path
The App itself was not launching/opening
Both of them are now solved for me & the app is woking perfectly fine (although I still am not able to use the “google this” option but whatever).
However, the first problem wasn’t my wrongdoing, but the app itself & so it wasn’t me who solved it but the developer himself with an update. After that, I was able to to download it again & everything was working.
Even so, I still read about Simblrs who encounter this issue so try a few things:
In the Forum, Deevo says: “Take a look at the debug window (S4TI > Debug). No lines should be blank and you should see the word "True" in three locations. If you happen to see the word "False", this is your issue. The application is having difficulty finding the location of an aspect of your game”
Other than that I recommend you read every comment in the forum post and/or reach out to him because he always answers peoples questions about S4TI! This whole fiasco for me was a few months ago. A few months of not playing & keeping up with updates on anything.
Today, I came back to playing & updated my Tumblr to finally get to uploading Sims but I thought I should look for an update of S4TI. The latest version was from November so I got the newest Mono Framework version (6.6.0) & then newest Tray Importer version.
Then I got the message that the app could not be launched.
I again searched every corner of the comment section & found the following:
Usually, this is a problem of that typical bullshit security system of MacBook where you have to manually click “open anyways” because the downloaded file is from an unknown source & Mac won’t open it unless you tell it otherwise. However, for me the message I got wasn’t telling me that this was the issue, I even went into my settings/security settings & looked for “open anyways” but it wasn’t showing up so I thought everything was fine. To put it simply: try to open the app with Terminal. If it doesn’t work, as it didn’t for me, do it manually: 1. Go to your Applications folder 2. right-click/ctrl-click Tray Importer & select “show contents” 3. Click Contents 4. Click MacOS 5. Click the .exe file or drag into the open Terminal app The app should now launch but fail & you should get the security message & the option to choose “open anyways” in the settings.
In conclusion, Sims 4 Tray Importer still works, even on Catalina!

Producing a romantic SFW Reylo-centric piece for the anthology;
Following an established color palette to be given to you upon your acceptance;
Following a set schedule of check-ins;
Being subject to redlining/constructive critiques to make sure all work is held to a certain quality ready for printing and publication;
Joining the artist collective of the anthology, a large group of artists who have participated in projects since the first one in March 2016;
Being respectful of other participants (no bashing, no prejudice or discrimination, no hateful speech of any kind).

THEME: Resurrection will be—you guessed it—about resurrection. It follows a story arc of five “chapters” of art, each chapter containing a part to an original poem. If accepted, you’ll get the details about how you can sign up for a certain chapter to illustrate for. There will be multiple artists illustrating each chapter to their own visions. Put together, these chapters will tell the story of Resurrection.
STORYBOARD CHECK-INS: There will be three storyboard check-ins: a concept check-in, a lineart/greyscale/preliminary color work check-in, and a final check-in. Each check-in MUST be adhered to unless given prior notice to mods. That way, we can accommodate spreads and changes on the spot, and we can be flexible with the chapters and Resurrection's story flow. More details on how storyboards for the book work will be provided to the participants when they're chosen.
AUs: Star Wars universe AUs are preferred (Jedi Academy/Senator/any EU, etc), but participants will run them by the mods in the first check-in or earlier. AUs are easy to accommodate!
COMMUNICATION: We have a Discord server that members join and we use to discuss the projects and our ideas/works in progress. Participants, upon being accepted and confirming their participation, will receive an invite to the server and added to the proper channels. Discord is our primary source of communication inside the project and we strongly prefer everyone to use that, but we will send emails out to participants as well.
OTHER INFO: Other info about the anthology will be provided to participants as we get into gear and start production. If you have any questions, reach out to us and we’ll do the best we can to answer them!
