yes!! i used this url a lot in the past, i think i first got it really soon after i first read solitaire in 2017, and then i would switch back and forth between this and a bunch of other ones until 2021. it's kind of funny that darcyolsson was the one that stuck eventually bc i used this a lot more over the years!

i'll go back to darcyolsson in time (not using that url feels weird by now) but after seeing tori & michael in the show i had to..... i love them so dearly still. 4ever sticking with the alice urls though she raised me through the magic of the internet & young adult books and for that this blog must forever remain a shrine to her work (even if it's just in name) 🙏

During the pandemic the songwriter and producer James Vincent McMorrow would rise early, go for a run and write songs for Louis Tomlinson, of One Direction.

“I actually made half of a record for him,” he says. Tomlinson’s team “had a lot of songs but maybe not a lot that he was as into as he wanted to be. I think they were maybe looking for a weirdo. So they reached out to me. I love him. He’s a fascinating human being. I absolutely loved making that album,” adds McMorrow, who is about to start a tour of Ireland.

When it comes to potential collaborators with a boy band megastar, McMorrow’s name is not the first that springs to mind. He’s an indie songwriter whose open-veined, falsetto-driven pop has been compared to that of folkies such as Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens. But Tomlinson was a fan of the Dubliner’s beautifully wrought music. He wasn’t alone: Drake famously sampled McMorrow on his 2016 track Hype.

One of the tracks they wrote together, The Greatest, would serve as the opener to Tomlinson’s second LP, Faith in the Future. As is often the way with the music industry, the rest are in a vault somewhere. Still, for McMorrow the opportunity to work with a pop star was about more than simply putting his craft in front of a wider audience. The call from Tomlinson’s team had come at a low point for the Irishman, who had become mired in confusion and doubt after signing to a major label for the first time in his career.

Executives at Columbia Records had recognised potential in McMorrow as an artist who bridged the divide between folk and pop. The fruits of that get-together would see daylight in September 2021 as the excellent Grapefruit Season LP, on which McMorrow teamed up with Paul Epworth, who has also produced Adele and Florence Welch.

The album was a beautifully gauzy rumination on the birth of his daughter and the muggy roller coaster of first-time parenthood. It went top 10 in Ireland and breached the top 100 in the UK. Yet the experience of working within the major-label system was strange for McMorrow, who at that point had been performing and recording for more than a decade. He didn’t hate it. But he knew he didn’t ever want to do it again.

“It was a weird time. I stopped touring in 2017. My daughter was born in 2018. I signed with Columbia Records at the same time and made a record that ... There were moments within it I was proud of. But fundamentally, I think if I was being very honest, I would say that I definitely got lost in the weeds of what the music industry wanted for me rather than what I wanted for myself.”

McMorrow grew up in Malahide, the well-to-do town in north Co Dublin; as a secondary-school student he suffered debilitating shyness. In 2021 he revealed that he had struggled with an eating disorder at school, ending up in hospital (“Anorexia that progressed into bulimia”). He was naturally retiring, not the sort to crave the spotlight. But he was drawn to music. “It was definitely a difficult journey,” he says. He wasn’t alone in that. “The musicians that tend to cut through and make it ... A lot of my friends, musicians that are successful, they’re not desperate for the stage.”

The Tomlinson collaboration was part of his strange relationship with the mainstream music industry. It went back to McMorrow’s third LP, Rising Water, from 2016. A move away from his earlier folk-pop, the project had featured engineering from Ben Ash, aka Two Inch Punch, a producer who had worked with chart artists such as Jessie Ware, Sia and Wiz Khalifa.

That was followed by the Drake sample in 2016 and by McMorrow writing the song Gone, which was at one point set to be recorded by a huge pop star whom he’d rather not identify.

“Gone is the red herring of red herrings in my entire career. I wrote that song for other people. I didn’t write it for myself. The whole reason I signed to Columbia Records and I had all these deals was because of Gone. I was very happy tipping away in my weird little world. And then I wrote that song, and a lot of bigger artists came in to try to take it,” he says.

“I won’t name names. There were recordings of it done. It got very close to being a single for someone else. I would go in these meetings with all these labels, and I would play it for them – just to play. Not with any sense of ‘This is my song.’ And they were, like, ‘You’re out of your mind if you don’t take this song. This is the song that will make you the thing that is the thing.’ And I was, like, ‘You’re wrong.’ For a year I basically was, like, ‘I disagree.’ And if you go in a room with enough people enough times and they tell you that you’re crazy ... I loved the song, but I did not love it for me. I never felt I fit. There was a little part of me that wanted to believe.”

As he had predicted, Gone wasn’t a hit. He received a lot of other strange advice, including that he cash in on the mercifully short-lived craze for NFTs by putting out an LP as a watermarked internet file. All of that was swirling in his brain when Tomlinson got in touch. To be able to step outside his own career was exactly what McMorrow needed.

“With Louis it was like boot camp. I had a very limited time with him. I had to wake up every morning, go for a run, write a song in my head, go to the studio. We made songs all day long. It lit a fire in my head again. I loved the process. I like sitting and talking to someone like Louis, who’s had this unbelievably fascinating lifestyle – so much tragedy in his life,” he says. Tomlinson’s mother and sister died within three years of each other, and his 1D bandmate Liam Payne died in October. “So many things have happened to him. I chatted to him and then write constantly. That was a lovely process.”

Because life is strange and full of contrasts McMorrow ended up working with Tomlinson around the same time that he was producing the Dublin postpunk “folk-metal” band The Scratch, on their LP Mind Yourself. “Totally different animals,” he says. “The Scratch album was an intense period in the studio of that real old-school nature of making music. A lot of fights. A lot of pushing back against ideas. A lot of different opinions. And you have to respect everybody’s opinions and find the route through.”

During his brief time on a major label, McMorrow was reminded of the music industry’s weakness for short-term thinking. In 2019, the business was obsessed with streaming numbers and hot-wiring the Spotify algorithm so that your music posted the highest possible number of plays.

“Everyone was driven by stats. ‘This song has 200 million streams.’ ‘That song has 400 million streams.’ I went into my meetings with Columbia Records ... the day I had my first big marketing meeting was the day my catalogue passed a billion streams, which, for someone like me, who started where I started, was a day where I should be popping champagne corks. Instead they immediately started talking about how they have artists that have one song that has two billion streams. So by their rule of thumb I was half as successful as one song by one artist on their label.”

Five years later he believes things have changed. He points to Lankum, a group who will never set Spotify alight yet who have carved a career by doing their own thing and not chasing the short-term goal of a place on the playlist. They are an example to other musicians, McMorrow says.

“I was in Brooklyn, doing two nights, a week and a half ago. In the venue across the road from where we were, pretty much, Lankum were doing two nights and had [the Dublin folk artist] John Francis Flynn opening for them. Those are two artists that, if you were to look at their stats, you wouldn’t be, like, ‘These are world-beating musicians.’ You start aggregating to this stat-based norm and you miss bands like Lankum, bands like The Mary Wallopers, people like John Francis Flynn.”

McMorrow is looking forward to his forthcoming Irish tour, which he sees as another leg of his journey to be his best possible self.

“The last two, three years have been a process of building it back to a version of me that actually made me happy rather than making me cry at night-time – a version that was making music because I liked it. Within this industry there’s so much outside noise. It’s quite overwhelming. I was overwhelmed. It’s been nice to reset the clock.”

Text: late 2021 I got a phone call asking me if I wanted to come to London to meet @louist91 and possibly write some songs. A few years ago he released a statement talking about changing his path musically, instead of the immediate search for hits, he’d start with music he genuinely loved and see where it got him. Seems like a simple and obvious thing to say, but considering the amount of people just chasing hits with little regard for vision or artistry, a statement like that struck me when I read it. So I was excited to meet him and see what he was about. First day we met we all wrote Common People, second day we wrote Lucky Again. In December of last year we went back in again, finished those ones, wrote and produced 3 others that are also on this album. It was the studio line-up of dreams, @mrfredball @jmoon1066, @riley_mac. Shouts to Louis for letting us do our thing, letting a dork like me come write some weird lyrics and weird melodies, trust us to shape the vision that he had. These last few years were dark at times, but it was moments like that where I remembered why I’m obsessed w music and why it’s all I’ve ever understood. incredibly proud of the work, Holding on to Heartache is genuinely one of my most favourite songs I’ve ever been a part of.

Also I was reading something about the album and it mentioned something about the gospel choir on the bridge of that song… nah man thats’s just 200 stacked of me singing super super high in the studio out back of Fred’s house😂]

With The Beady Bunch (the mixed family of 910, 910jr, and 909jr) returning to the Brooks Camp area, i figured i should talk a bit about this unique family, and how their lives could develop this year -- because it could be very interesting.

To begin, some background about this unique blended family.

Bears 909 and 910 are sisters -- the daughters of 409 Beadnose from 2016. When they were emancipated at 2.5 years old in 2018 they stayed together for several seasons, which is not uncommon for subadults in general, and is especially common for littermates. Then, in 2021 -- when they were both 5.5 years old -- 909 distanced herself from her sister, because 909 had spring cubs to care for, and like many mother bears she was very protective of them.

in 2022, 910 returned with a spring cub herself, and something amazing happened -- the sisters joined their families together. for the whole season, the four of them travelled together, played together, and fished together. it was very cute, and also groundbreaking -- it was the first time we had ever observed this behaviour in brown bears!

in 2023, 909 entered estrus again, emancipated her 2.5 year old cub 909jr, and separated from the rest of the family group. But instead of 909jr finding her own way through the world as a subadult, she got herself adopted by her aunt. In 2024, people wondered if 910 would separate from the two of them -- 910jr was 2.5 years old, and that's often (though not always) when mother bears emancipate their cubs. But she didn't, and the unique family had another year together.

And that's how we have ended up where we are now, in 2025.

Bear mating season is about to start, so all sows who enter into estrus will emancipate any cubs they are currently caring for. All eyes are on the 910s, because there are many ways their situation could evolve in the coming months.

First: 910 is likely to enter into estrus, though it isn't guaranteed. 910jr is 3.5 years old now, and while most cubs get emancipated at 2.5, rarely some stay with their mothers until they reach 4.5 -- see 504 and her two cubs for an example. So, the family might break up due to aunt-mom 910 kicking them both out.

Second, and perhaps most interestingly: 909jr is now 4.5 years old, which is when some sows enter into adulthood -- and estrus. In fact, 4.5 is when her own mother, 909, not only entered estrus for the first time but also got pregnant with 909jr. So there is also a chance that 909jr will self-emancipate, regardless of if 910 enters estrus this season.

Given those facts, the possibilities for the 910s this season are:

1: somehow neither 910 or 909jr enters estrus, and the family stays together -- unlikely, but possible.

2: just 910 enters into estrus, and she emancipates both of her cubs -- who can stay together all summer if they want to.

3: just 909jr enters into estrus, she self-emancipates from 910, and 910 & 910jr stay together for another season.

or 4: both 910 and 909jr enter estrus, the family members all go their separate ways, and the two of them might come back with spring cubs next year.

whatever happens, it'll be interesting for sure, and i am excited to watch how it develops!

Fish of the Day

The fish of the day today is the devils hole pupfish!

The devils hole pupfish, scientific name Cyprinodon diabolis, is an endangered fish known to live in exactly one spot, Devils hole. Devils hole is a limestone cavern with a geothermal pool found in Nye county of Nevada, and a disconnected section of Death Valley National Park. The geothermal pool keeps the water at a consistent 33 degrees Celsius all seasons, and has low dissolved oxygen amounts. The surface of water at the cave is only 72ft by 12ft, but below that the cave descends deep into the earth. Below the surface pool there is a larger cavern descending to 150 meters at its deepest before branching into a smaller tube at the bottom, the depth of which is currently unknown.1965 two teenagers went diving in the hole with scuba gear, and were never seen again,  rescue divers sent after them found a dropped flashlight, and other scuba gear but the bodies were never found. One rescue diver dropped a weighted plate that fell a full 932ft without contacting a bottom to the chamber, describing the water below him as an "infinity chamber". Later scans of the cave revealed it is at least as deep as 1,247ft, although to this day the depth is still unknown. Another well known aspect of the cave is that it can be used to determine when there are earthquakes all over the world. The water surges and has displayed unique patterns during the 2022 Mexico 7.6 magnitude earthquake, along with other strong earthquakes further from the hole. Such as: the 2012 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea, or the 2018 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia. Devils hole pupfish are known to live only in the first 80ft of the cave.

Devils hole pupfish are unique in appearance, getting only as large as an inch, and being one of few species that have no pelvic fins, however when raised in colder conditions these pupfish will regrow these appendages. As juveniles these fish are an off white color, and females retain some of this coloring in adulthood. This species has only ever been recorded with as many as 500 wild fish at its highest, hitting an all time low point of 42 fish in 2007. The more recent numbers are looking up however, and there were 263 pupfish observed in spring of 2022. The survival from egg to adulthood is small, but the likelihood with human effort that this fish will survive the test of time is high. Described as possibly the most isolated wild vertebrate species in the world. These fish live only 10-14 months, reaching sexual maturity at 8-10 weeks old and spawn year round with peaks in mid February-May, and a smaller peak in July-September. Due to the unique oxygen levels of devils hole, these fish have adapted to enter a state of tupor, similar to hibernation, where they can live anaerobically. This allows them to go without breathing for up to 2 hours, however they produce ethanol as a byproduct.

Most of the devils hole pupfish life is on the rocky outcrops of the surface waters of the cave system. Breeding, egg laying, diet, resting, and schedules surrounding the placement of the sun all depend on these rocky outcroppings of stone near the surface of the water. The diet of these fish is dependent on the rock outcroppings of the cave, as they eat anything they can find in the cave system. This includes: small freshwater crustaceans, beetles, flatworms, freshwater snails, inorganic matter made of small sections of the caves limestone, along with spirogyra and diatom algae, which grows on the rocks themselves and makes up most of the pupfish's diet. Due to their diet being mostly algae types, pupfish are incredibly susceptible to the seismic activity in the devils' hole, as it creates small tsunamis along surface water and washes away algae on the rocks, leaving them without a majority of their food source until it regrows. When these earthquakes happen the pupfish are known to flee into the deer waters of the cave until the water has stilled, and are thought to perhaps feel earthquakes before they happen, although not much research has been done on this yet.

OLNF Week Day 6: Different Seasons

It’s April 8th, 2018 and Alex is graduating in a month. Alexander Morello, Qiu Lin, and Tamarack Baumann are graduating high school in a month. It’s unbelievable. It feels like yesterday when Alex had just moved into Golden Grove to begin his first day of 5th grade with his two new friends. But now here they are chilling in Tamarack's backyard watching petals fall down from the trees leaving green leaves for summer. It wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t too cold, it’s Spring. The flowers will start blooming all over town bringing life and color to the once cold and dead winter. Spring is Alex’s second favorite season, his first being Autumn. Both of those seasons were so pretty, even if they were pretty in the opposite ways. 

“Alex?” Tamarack stands in front of him, “Are you spacing out again?” She smiles gently. When they first met, Tam was the most outgoing and all over the place girl he’d ever met. She was super overwhelming to him at first but she became such a comfort person to him when she stood up for him during roll call on their first day. He had always leaned on her when he needed comfort. She’s not as crazy as she was before though. When she got older, she started hiding herself more from people. Tam had become more insecure of herself because some kids at school believed that Tamarack needed to be. But Tamarack was the most beautiful girl he’d ever met… he couldn’t believe that she thought of herself like that. What’s funny is that Tamarack thought the same about Alex. But now, Tamarack has started to appreciate herself. Even though she isn’t sure what she wants to do, she still goes on with life. Alexander adores Tamarack so much, he loves her.

“Yeah, it's just very pretty out.” He smiles back at her.

“You’d always had a thing for pretty stuff huh?” Qiu teases. Yeah, they know that Alex thinks that Qiu is the prettiest person he has ever met. That’s what he believed when he first met them looking down at him in their hideout. He even accidentally blurted out that he thought they were pretty then. Qiu was always the sunshine in Alex’s life, even when they weren’t shining so bright themself. Qiu said they were friends not even a whole day after meeting for the first time and even they stood up for him during roll call as well. They were so important to him. Alex is just so grateful that he moved in next to Qiu, he couldn’t imagine a life without them. Even when they cut themself off from everyone during middle school, that didn’t matter. Alex loves them, he always had. 

“Yeah” Alex nudges Qiu in the arm. They laugh back at him. The three of them had grown together in this small cul-de-sac. And even if Qiu and Tam don’t get along much, they’ve always been there for each other. He should honestly thank his Ma for moving to Golden Grove because his life just got so much better after moving here. He wouldn’t want anything else. 

But now Alex is going off to film school three hours away in August. Sure he’s so happy to be following his dreams of going into the film industry but shit… he’s going to miss everything. But he shouldn’t worry about such things right now. Maybe in a couple of months but… not right now. 

The only thing he should be focused on is watching petals fall down from the trees leaving green leaves for summer in Tamarack backyard with the loves of his life. Even if he is going to be three hours away for college, the only thing on his mind is what’s going to happen after college. Maybe the three of them can get an apartment together? Live the domestic life. Maybe the three of them will be dating by then (well Tam and Qiu won't be dating each other that's for sure). Maybe they can get married. Hopefully being able to marry more than 1 person will be legal soon. He really hopes. 

The wind blows through all three of them, Qiu and Tamarack look at Alex. He looks at them. They look at each other.

Gojo Satoru (1989 - 2018) a son, a teacher, & a friend.

but above all else he was a lover. the purest love you’ve ever experienced. you brush off the growing vines around his grave – the earth threatening to take him further away from you.

you pull out a small box that holds two pieces of his favorite dessert – kikufuku. you lit a candle atop one of them. with a deep breath you make a wish and blow it out. the only wish you had. the only wish you uttered over and over again. every night. a wish to reunite with your lover and feel his warmth once more. you sit there for as long as you can. you speak about everything and nothing, recounting your memories.

he’d been begging you to give him a chance for months but you denied cause he was satoru gojo. satoru gojo who had a reputation. satoru gojo who got anything he wanted but you. satoru gojo who made it his mission to stand outside of your building every morning and ask if you would go on a date with. and he was the happiest man when you finally had pity on him and gave him a chance. it was one of the best days of your lives.

you’d once mentioned to a friend how you’d never been to an arcade. you’re not sure how satoru found it, but alas he did. a child like sparkle in your eye when you he told you that the arcade was empty for the two of you to enjoy. your pout tugged at his heart when he beat you at street fighter. and then he looked at the way your eyes went wide and a sweet laugh escaped your lips and you pumped your fist in victory when you finally beat him. and he made a silent promise to himself that he’d let you win every game, every argument. hell he even let you win the ‘who stays alive the longest’ game.

you missed him. you missed him terribly. you missed the way he would break out in laughter at your jokes. you missed the way he would hum when a song was stuck in his head. you missed the way he would run his hands through your hair. you missed the way he would you hold your hand. you missed the way his lips felt against your skin. the way he would use your body as a canvas to imprint his love. you missed the way he would wrap his arms around you in the night and pull you closer.

nightfall takes over the sky and you know it’s time for you to leave. with a heavy heart you cross the street. a loud honk and all you can see is white.

just as you wished you’re reunited with your lover. somewhere in the land of souls, satoru’s soul finds you. his dim soul shines brightly as he reunites with you. your souls intertwined forever more.

Dramatic Changes over the South Polar Cap

The South Polar residual cap of carbon dioxide ice rapidly changes. This 2019 image was planned as an almost exact match to the illumination and viewing angles of a previous one we took in August 2009. 

The pits have all expanded and merged, and we can just barely see the patterns in the 2009 image compared to this January 2019 picture. The 2009 image is also brighter and bluer, with more seasonal frost and/or less dust over the surface. These images were both taken in late southern summer, but our 2019 picture is slightly later in the Martian season by about two weeks. 

This gap allowed for additional loss of frost that might make the surface darker, but there are also year-to-year changes. In particular, there was a near-global dust storm in the summer of 2018 and late southern spring on Mars, and extra deposits of dust would have warmed the surface and promoted even more disappearance of the frost.

It’s incomplete, but what we have is bliss. Slowburn, mutual pining. Zutara-centric, but also explores the personalities of Team Avatar and their relationships.
