Eleven points to "New Americana"
Last of the bonuses - the top five - in the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post.
New Americana - Halsey
The fifth and final bonus point goes here, the second single from Halsey's album "Badlands". An anthem for the millennial generation, Halsey rejects the values of her parents, as all teenagers through history have done.
Tumblr media
Halsey's generation takes diversity to heart, because diversity comes from the heart. They explained further, "It's this idea of these kids who are part of a generation where pop culture is so heavily influential that diversity doesn't scare them the way it scared our parents and their parents. We're more accepting of different walks of life. So I think the New Americana is racially ambiguous, people who are proud of their culture and they own it, possibly not from a binary of gender."
She sings of a generation that mocks itself, doesn't take itself too seriously. A pointed satire, to the point where stupid people stop understanding it. "I made it as click-bait-y, nursery rhyme-y as I could. I was making this comment on how we have this click-bait culture, but a lot of people took it seriously, like, 'Wow, she's being so buzzword-y!' Ding, ding, ding - that's on purpose!"
Tumblr media
Comparisons have been made with Halsey's peers - Lorde, Taylor Swift from a step-generation above, Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple from her parents' time. Halsey is angry, mean, troubled, and supremely talented. "New Americana" was written by Halsey with Larzz Principato and Kalkutta. It demands to be played twice, just as Zane Lowe did when premiering it on {Broomsticks} 1. It's a tremendous zeitgeisty rush, a foundational text for a generation younger than me…
…and that's what gives Halsey problems. Halsey's breakout hit is the one they got bored of. Having to perform one track over and over and over again could bore the brightest talent: just ask Francesco Gabbiani, who got cheesed off when he performed "Occidentali's karma" for months on end. I respect Halsey's position, and while my heart says this is the Song of the Century (So Far), my head says "no".
Tumblr media
"New americana" is a perfect document of the cultural zeitgeist. It captures and explains what it's like to be young in the early years of the twenty-first century.

Daddy Yankee - Gasolina 2004
"Gasolina" was released as the lead single from Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee's 2004 album Barrio Fino in the US in October 2004. By November 6, WSKQ-FM in New York City reported "Gasolina" in their top 10 rotation, and WRTO-FM in Florida said the song was their number one most-played track. It entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart a week later, rising to number 32 in January 2005. "Gasolina" was a hit in North America and the Caribbean, gaining Daddy Yankee popularity among Latino mainstream music fans. In July 2005, "Gasolina" was released as a single in the UK, eventually earning a Silver certification in March 2019. Australia saw the single enter their charts in late January 2006 during their summer season, rising to number 12. "Gasolina" was the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Glory sings the line "dame más gasolina", although she is not credited.
In 2015, the song was ranked number nine on the "50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time" list according to Billboard. In 2018, it was ranked number 38 on Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest Latin Pop Songs. In 2017, it was included on Billboard's "12 Best Dancehall & Reggaeton Choruses of the 21st Century" at number eight. In 2021, it was ranked number 50 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and a year later it was ranked at the first place on their 2022 "100 Greatest Reggaeton Songs of All Time" list. In 2023, "Gasolina" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The song was used in the 2023 movie Fast X / Fast & Furious 10.
"Gasolina" received a total of 77,4% yes votes!

With the first quarter of the 21st century coming to an end, Billboard has been looking back on the 25 Greatest Pop Stars of the Past 25 Years. Below, we take a deeper look into the solo career of Louis Tomlinson — one of the members of our No. 22 pop stars, One Direction — and how his songwriting, originally honed in 1D, has helped him develop into one of the group’s strongest breakout artists.
When One Direction officially went on hiatus in 2015, Zayn Malik dropped Mind of Mine in 2016, Harry Styles’ eponymous LP dropped in 2017, Niall Horan followed with Flicker later that year and Liam Payne’s First Time EP arrived in 2018. Louis Tomlinson, however, took his time with releasing a full project – and entered an era of healing and self-discovery that saw him realizing his potential as one of 1D’s most self-actualized artists, even if not necessarily the starriest.
Even before going solo, Tomlinson showed he was meant for breakthrough success while in One Direction. Longtime Directioners know that Tomlinson wrote more songs in One Direction than any other member, penning long standing hits including “Perfect,” “History” and “Fool’s Gold” and proving his fortitude as a songwriter who understands lyrical cleverness and crafting the indescribably catchy refrains necessary to produce arena-ready hits. Beyond his musical abilities, Tomlinson’s sense of humor and friendship with fellow 1D members also ensured fans had a soft spot for him.
However, when he did go solo, the road was slippery at first. He teamed up with Steve Aoki for his first solo release “Just Hold On” in December 2016, and just three days before its release, Tomlinson’s mother died of leukemia. He still took the stage to perform the song on The X Factor, the first public testament to the star’s strength and dedication to his musical craft.
Tomlinson’s resilience amid adversity continued as he navigated the music industry. The star signed with Epic Records in 2017 and released a few singles – including “Miss You” and the Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals-assisted “Back to You.” While the infectious hooks to both tracks could have easily solidified Tomlinson as a pop mainstay, the two singles didn’t perform as well as expected on the charts: “Just Hold On” peaked at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Back to You” hit No. 40, while “Miss You” missed the chart altogether. Ultimately, a full-length album never materialized with Epic Records.
youtube
Tomlinson shortly got back on his feet, as he always does, and signed with Arista Records in 2019 – where he honed his talent as a songwriter, this time feeling comfortable enough to tackle more vulnerable topics in his music. His first release under the label was “Two of Us,” a heart-wrenching tribute to his late mother. “I know you’ll be looking down/ Swear I’m gonna make you proud/ I’ll be living one life for the two of us,” he sings in the chorus, giving a glimpse into what would soon become a musical career full of honesty and vulnerability.
Unfortunately, shortly after its release, another hardship struck Tomlinson’s life when his 18-year-old sister Fizzy died of an accidental overdose. Both the release of “Two of Us” and the tragedy that followed showed just how close Tomlinson’s community of fans is, as they showered him with online love and support in the months that followed.
After taking some much-deserved time to heal, he announced in August of that year that his debut solo album was on its way – and shortly after, he released a follow-up single, the rock-leaning, drumline-driven “Kill My Mind.” Tomlinson admitted that he finally found his stride. “I’m actually really proud and relieved to finally find my place, find my lane musically,” he told Hits Radio Breakfast at the time, indicating a moment of relief amid his turbulent few years.
youtube
Tomlinson’s debut solo album, Walls, arrived in January 2020 and while it hit the Billboard 200‘s top 10, it was met with mixed reviews from critics, who suggested that the heart he wanted to portray wasn’t quite there. His growth outside of commercial success proved otherwise, as he had been spending the past few years building a solid identity not only as an artist, but also as a person. While some of the other One Direction alums are still finding their footing with their solo sounds to this day, Tomlinson grew strongly into an instrumentation-focused pop-rock artist whose lyrics go beyond the cookie cutter sentiments you might expect from a former boy band member.
And soon, all the hard work – both personally and musically – finally paid off. Faith in the Future, his 2022 sophomore solo album, debuted at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. In the United States, Faith In The Future debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, and at No. 5 on the all-genre Billboard 200, his highest-charting set yet on both tallies. The album’s success, as well his sold-out live shows on its accompanying tour, not only showed the still-standing Directioner devotion to Tomlinson, but also made it clear that he picked up a slew of new fans along the way.
Tomlinson’s self-awareness was evident on the album’s lead single, “Bigger Than Me.” “When somebody told me I would change/ I was afraid, I don’t know why/ ‘Cause so does the world outside, I’ve realized/ It’s bigger than me,” he sings – indicating that the key for solo success all along was being himself, and letting go of the pressure that fame brings.
While Tomlinson has still yet to score the major chart hits stateside that his 1D bandmates essentially achieved right away – and has been more focused on his 28 clothing line the past couple years – he’s proven that he doesn’t need traditional pop crossover success to have a bright future ahead of him. With another couple albums and tours that continue to establish his identity and expand his artistry, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him making the jump to arenas in the not-distant future. Louis’ solo career may not have gotten off to the perfect start, but it just might end up being perfect for him in the long-term anyway.

i wanted to do somethin special for it and i thought id share one of my biggest inspirations for interpretin davekat. which is music i think they'd like. when you routinely blast davekat doodles onto mspaint canvases at 2am you need a backing track and these are common choices for me
3 songs for each dude for 3k fwlrs. man thats crazy...
tracklist + lil commentary under readmore
dave zone
1... 21st century pop song -- hymie's basement
this whole album i associate with dave a lot even tho its very depresse mode. i have way too many plays on this song. that beat is so real.
2... vice principal -- why?
that record scratch bit got me bouncing&trouncing manm. ive been listening to this song since i was a lil shitty kid. this voice is my headcanon voice for dave
3... re-do -- modern baseball
get a load of them lyrics son. passage of time, dinosaurs, trouble sleeping, watching movies, fear of death, love of life. recent fave, big fave.
KARKAT ZONE
4... i see failure -- antarctigo vespucci
another new beat 4 me but damn its an anthem. love dudes who shout. self fulfilling prophecies of relationship failure are peak karkat 2 me
5... the minors -- kawai sprite
i have never played friday night funky. i found this album by pure fuckin chance and its great, if you like this song give it a shot. sounds adult swim-y. i associate a lot of songs from this album with kk its a very distinct sound that i just connect with him fsr. the bittersweet sad anger of it
6... exactly where i'm at -- ween
this is a certified karkat classic 4 me. "look at yourself your lips are like 2 flabs of fat, they go front and back and flappity flappity flap". one of my fave things about ween is they have really vivid lyrics and rlly consistently hit this cool spacey, semi-aquatic vibe. i think this is because of drugs that they are awesome, so lets all do more druggs today

Music w/ Choso
thinking about taking your headphones out in front of Choso and hes just like ??? and you realize his ancient ass has never experience spotify. You pop one of your headphones into his ear and unpause your music. It doesn’t matter if you’re listening to Drake or Kendrick, Boygenius or Adrianne Lenker, because he is absolutely amazed. His eyes will go a bit wide and he’ll try to hide the pure awe on his face. He’ll start to ask to listen to music together, grabbing your headphones when you’re in public. There’s just something so intimate about listening to the music together, he thinks, especially when no one else is hearing it and it’s just you two. He’ll watch the way your face lights up when your favorite song plays, or how you grimace when you get an add. He’s just absolutely enamored. He’ll start to listen to your playlist when he’s by himself, feeling like it’s bringing him closer to you. He’ll memorize all the lyrics, the beats, and rhythm. He’ll never sing out loud, but you might catch him humming every now and then. If you call him out on it, his face will go all pink and he’ll just walk away. He loves to listen to music with you in public, one earbud in each of your ears. He’ll tap his finger against your hand to the beat, or tap his foot lightly. He gets so peeved when someone tries to talk to you, cuz don’t they see you two are having couple bonding time right now??? He’ll pull you away from chores, drag you into bed, and just play music, ignoring the way you huff. He eventually makes you buy premium, because goddammit those ads are ruining his romantic time! When people start bothering you, he’ll just snatch your phone out and start playing music. The person is just watching like, ‘hello?’ And Choso will just grab your hand, walking away with exit music. Anyways, this man is so happy to live in the 21st century with you, Spotify, Yuji, and Phoebe Bridgers.

cw: banter. high fashion model!reader. barou is well... himself. alcohol mention.
You have two minutes until you’re on stage, the internal countdown in your head unable to offset the jitters running through your entire body. You’re heavily made up, a life-size doll with exaggerated hair and skin and overdone facial features, cloth draped over you and tailored to the exact vision of one of the highest paid fashion designers of your era. You’re with your best friend at your side, so there is nothing to fear - the only conceivable truth at this very moment is you look good as hell, even if you are nervous. Plus regardless, the adrenaline rush always fades within the last few moments before you start your strut, and calmed by this fact, you run your fingers through the choppy strands of your freshly cut, colored and extended platinum silver curls before letting out a sigh.
Your friend, internationally renowned as the highest-grossing pop star of the century, catches your sigh and laughs, and in her accoutrement reminiscent of a modernized and further glamorized Marie Antoinette, glittery fan in her hand, she looks every bit of the diva she is as she covers her mouth before laughing coyly.
“You think he’ll be here tonight, too?” she teases.
Your makeup is caked on too thick for you to risk creasing it, so you don’t bother to react too extremely.
“Do these athletes have to train sometimes or does Sae just get all of his endurance from fucking you?”
“Ooh, someone’s out to bite tonight. Why don’t you swipe at him instead of me? He’s probably sitting at the very front row waiting again, just hoping you’d look this way.”
“Don’t piss me off, princess.”
Another wave of the fan, covered with a classic high-society laugh that almost makes you laugh too much to throw sass back at her. 20 seconds are left and you’re sprayed with something to make you look camera ready, and the two of you link arms, her beginning her song with a fairytale princess style wave as you take your first step out.
The crowd screams for the woman of the Moment, and you bow as would a prince, even if you’re dressed in a semi-sheer bodysuit, shimmery golden epaulettes, and baroque inspired thigh high boots. 21st century Marie Antoinette, princess of pop, twirls in her cream and blue toile corset and high low frilly petticoats as she starts her walk, and you closely follow, with your own signature sway of the hips and confident step, forming a half circle, smizing the cameras with shot after shot after shot after shot, threatening to blind you as she croons her newest hit single.
She sings for the people; you stunt for the people, a dynamic pair.
Another turn, positioning your side to the right of the stage; two steps, another pose left. You let out an exhale, and smile, before completing the half circle around the singer. Step, step, step and you’re off the stage as she belts, her tousled red locks laced with hanging flowers impossibly unwilling to fall out of place.
Barou is there, with that unchanging red gaze, right where you expected him.
You pretended you didn’t see him as you marched off, the clickity clack of your impossibly high heels, drowned out by camera snaps and loud music. Yet you can’t help but wonder if he’s looking at your backside in the high cut of the bodysuit and the straightness of your posture, if the androgynous cut paired with the red of your lips confused him a little bit.
He’s always there, watching, this time with no girl hanging off his arm since the last time you locked eyes with him and looked away with feigned disgust. You weren’t in New York then but you paraded the stage in Victoria’s Secret lingerie, and delved deep into the unimpressed dominatrix persona.
Perhaps you were a little too convincing in your selling of a fantasy.
You don’t know why the fuck he keeps coming, to your dismay and to the sheer entertainment of your best friends, the social phenomenon and the social butterfly, but he’s persistent, the ten seconds of intense red stare and cocksure smile you just pretended to ignore still burned into your mind as hair and makeup turns you into an haute couture peasant woman for the second round of runway walk.
You’re pretty sure if anything being dressed as a feminized King Louis XVI only made his dick harder.
The next time you walk out, you ignore his side of the audience, and you know when he approaches you later on at the afterparty, he’ll have a lot to say about it. You focus instead on the social butterfly tapping away at her phone, pretending she can’t see Rin desperately fluttering his eyelashes at her and two minutes away from an attention-seeking tantrum, and you stash away a joke about him potentially flying away for later. She’s dressed spectacularly and probably belongs on stage with the two of you, but you’ll save your comments for later in the evening.
No more thinking, you are here to Serve.
The moment your friends have dispersed, the socialite to chat up all the new up and comers so as to make sure her gossip site is up to the very second in relevance, and the pop star to sweet-talk her way into drinks, you’re an easy kill.
The dance you play with Shoei is well-practiced at this point. He offers you a drink, and you pretend you’re uninterested before taking it gingerly with the tips of your fingers.
“You looked beautiful today.”
Your eyelids don’t flutter.
“I always do. That’s the whole point of the model thing.”
You’re no longer giving the year 1730, now dressed in a slinky crimson bodycon dress, simple and as you stare him down, you realize that you match his eyes a little too closely. He must have caught the split second of unease because he smirks again and leans in, elbow rested on the bar countertop behind you.
“That’s true. You do your job well, always.”
Taking in a deep breath, then a swig of your drink, he laughs. Your eyes widen quickly and you look at him sharply.
“You didn’t drug this, did you?”
He looks almost immediately offended, the smirk immediately wiped off his face which forces you to laugh in turn. He straightens up, then looks around quickly, clear annoyance on his face as he adjusts his suit.
“I’m not that desperate, regardless of how clear my intentions are to get you to like me,” he says frankly.
Again with the directness. The balance tipped slightly in your favor now,  you take another sip, then move in a little closer. Perhaps the drinks you’ve had before this have loosened you up a little as you smile up at him.
Your hand closes around his chin for a moment, gently, as the music booms overhead. If anyone is watching this game of cat and mouse, you hope they’re entertained.
“Is that why you’re following me all around the world to see me walk?”
He doesn’t move your hand, and you can feel the movement of his jaw as he smiles within the reach of your fingers.
“I’m dedicated. Plus, I imagine you’re well aware that I too am part of this industry now, no?”
You blink, genuinely surprised, tilting your head to the side. To this, he seems to chuckle.
“Are you surprised?”
For a moment, you size him up again as one would a prized horse. Tall, handsome, broad shoulders, wearing his clothes well (a little too well, you think briefly then shake your head), famous even if somewhat controversial (a few locker room antics had not gone over well in the media, particularly the social sort recently)... it’s not odd for footballers of his stature to get modeling deals.
You let your manicured hand drop to your side.
“I mean… I don’t see you strutting up and down those runways like I do. Don’t you have a ball to go kick around or something?”
“I do have a quite strict schedule,” he retorts. He takes the glass out of your hand gently but firmly before you can do anything and takes a sip himself, looking at you all the while. An indirect kiss.
“Good taste,” he says.
You roll your eyes at him.
“You brought the drink.”
“Yeah. And I have excellent taste.”
Barou hands it back to you and in defiance, while you still take it, you set it down immediately at a high cocktail table and as a scantily clad waitress passes by with a plate of cocktail offerings, you grab a dick shaped sausage skewer and bite off the tip as politely yet pointedly as you can. He raises an eyebrow then raises the stakes, oysters pass by and he slurps down the contents of the shell, loud enough even the masked waiter seems to be blushing, and you can feel your body warm.
“Excellent. Taste.” he repeats again, and then with his last flash of a smile catches a friend waving at him and makes his way past you, the scent of his cologne lingering as you realize you haven’t won this parry, and probably never will.
After all, you’re the one still watching him walk away.

"Baby shark"
Into the final week in the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post. And here's one with as many nominations (1) as the entire Ed Sheeran catalogue.
Baby shark - Pinkfong
Throughout this list, I've commented on the techniques of song writing. A good pop song is catchy and memorable and has hooks. A great pop song will use its limited time to go somewhere unexpected. A good song will convey its message; a great song will leave us in no doubt about its meaning. A good song will want to be heard; a great song demands to be heard again.
"Baby shark" is a great song.

"Baby shark" grew out of a campfire song, popular amongst the young people of Korea. The original writers have been lost to time, we do know that versions of the song were around in the late 20th century. Alemuel had a decent hit in 2007 with "Kleiner Hai", a German-language tale of a small shark that grew up and ate a diver. Other translations were made and released in the following years.
Back in Seoul, SmartStudy was founded in 2010. The media company released classic nursery and playground songs from their culture, crafts, puppet videos, and a collection of animations for children. With a pink fox mascot, the Pinkfong brand of animations and phone apps was successful in south-east Asia.

And then the Pinkfong company recorded "Baby Shark". It was successful in the original version, and a "dance version" of the video turned into a phenomenal success, the original clip has been seen an average of one-and-a-half times by every person on the planet.
"Baby shark" is remarkable in many other ways. For instance, it uses a tremendously restricted vocabulary. Eighteen words would be an unremarkable clause in a Lorde song, or a short album title for Fiona Apple. "Baby shark" uses precisely 18 words. Total. Across the entire song, just 18 words.
The song is written in G-major, with a change to C-major for the final stanza - two of the most common musical keys in pop music. To sing "Baby shark", you need a range of just half an octave, so even the worst voice can sing it reasonably (compare with other well-known tunes with minimal range: "Too many broken hearts", "G'd save the queen").

Lyrically, the song tells a story and circles back upon itself: it introduces the participants, encourages us care about them, takes them on a literal journey, and resolves it, imploring us to set out again.
Whether we like it or not, "Baby shark" has become an absolute staple of the pop charts. It's in the top 60 most-streamed music tracks almost every week of the year, and has gone from utter obscurity to something everyone knows.
"Baby shark" is the biggest cultural moment of the past ten years, and fully deserving a nomination for the century's Best 50 Songs. (But just the one.)
