What are your thoughts on/the reasoning behind sub Satoru in FIYM?
aye aye captain i shall yap about this
obligatory: this a subjective interpretation, these are character choices i am making because i think they are compelling and explore themes that i like. probably don't psychoanalyze real life people through their sexual preferences.
okay, time to psychoanalyze gojo satoru through his sexual preferences -
so, something i have seen and heard is that powerful people are subs. 'power' here can mean any type of power, but generally this is connected to a person's societal position. this is maybe somewhat true (here's one study on s/m specifically - note the diff between men and women, i think this makes sense due to m/f social positionality, but clearly there's a lot of nuance and variance here), but it's certainly not a definitive relationship. but whether it is or is not generally true, i think it's a very interesting way to frame characters.
d/s is about control. so what do our characters want out of 'control'? who wants to be in control, and why? in the case of powerful people being submissive, I see it as both a release (from responsibility, from expectation) and a taboo (acting improper, doing the forbidden). on the flipside, with weaker people being dominant, it's a catharsis (getting reparations/payback against the power structure) and also a taboo (daring to step out of line/wield power).
Why is Satoru a Sub?
gojo satoru is a submissive for all of the above reasons. his position in the gojo clan, the responsibility that comes with it, and the expectation that he is a distant, untouchable god - is something he resents. he goes against this directly by being brash and irreverent. he shows a lot of aggression (socially, also combat wise) and energy, but this is not a real substitute for closeness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and of course, as an adult -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what satoru wants is an equal - someone to share the burden with, someone on his level, someone he can trust. geto is certainly that, in canon. geto is the only one he trusts to truly watch his back. later, he'll trust people like shoko and yuta with contingency plans. he trusts nanami and kusakabe to look after the kids, and he trusts the kids to prevail after he's done his part (or at least, he's made peace with the fact that he's done all he can for them).
but there is never anyone else who stands beside him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, to go a little further, I think that what satoru actually wants is someone he can defer to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not only can he share the load with suguru, he can also take a step back and give it entirely to suguru. and he can do this because suguru is not only strong, he has very strong principles. the focus on suguru's philosophy in Hidden Inventory - to me - is an indicator that satoru really wanted suguru to be 'the strongest', so that suguru could lead and he could follow.
now, unfortunately, suguru got The Trauma and found a way to justify genocide, so satoru had to nope out of that. but that's my read of canon: gojo satoru has been forced into a role of ultimate authority since birth, and he desperately wants out.
(this is a big driver of the jujutsu clan politics side plot in FIYM as well)
one other thing i'll add on the physical side of things - satoru's oversensitivity could really go either way. either he wants to have very precise control over what he is feeling to prevent overstimulation (dom leaning), or (the road we are taking) he wants someone else to push his body beyond his instinctive limits (sub leaning).
Bonus: Why is Satoru a M?
in 2sorcs ch 13, I do also veeeeeery briefly gloss over my Gojo Satoru is a Masochist headcanon. this is because he is a freak with a battle boner. and also something something Six Eyes - touch starved - seeking stimulation even if it's not necessarily pleasure. being hurt is another taboo for him, first because he's the strongest and second because of infinity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: Why is Suguru a Dom?
actually, he's not. (in FIYM)
suguru is a switch. (in FIYM x2). lettuce 🥬 return to the concept:
...with weaker people being dominant, it's a catharsis (getting reparations/payback against the power structure) and also a taboo (daring to step out of line/wield power)...
suguru is extremely societally weak in FIYM. his past is extremely bleak (homeless, abused, cut off connections to family), and his present is extremely precarious (no clan backing, controversial technique). so if you followed this, then suguru lends himself to being a dom, yes.
however, this only really makes sense when the weak person is domming a strong person. and in terms of the physical power dynamic between satoru and suguru, satoru is not the stronger one. physically, due to the six eyes and satoru's lack of experience, suguru sees satoru as extremely vulnerable, so there's no societal/positional catharsis. he's extremely worried about overstepping satoru's boundaries (which satoru doesn't even want to set, which makes suguru worry even more).
obviously, with suguru's past, he cares a lot about consent. but even when it is given, he's worried that satoru doesn't actually know his limits, and won't know when to say no because of his inexperience and his overenthusiasm/wanting to please suguru.
(and satoru is also worried about this from his end, because he is worried about the societal power difference between them (the uncertainty principle) making suguru go along with things even if he doesn't want them (2sorcs ch 14)).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway, all this to say - suguru is not particularly compelled to dom satoru - he is a switch. he is filling the role that satoru is asking for, but he would also be perfectly happy to give control to satoru as well. i don't think that FIYM suguru would trust anyone else enough to be a sub, but with satoru, he knows that he's not in any real danger of being emotionally/sexually abused/manipulated, so he's down.
actually, we will see a little bit of dom satoru later in FIYM. here is the tiniest of snips as your reward, kind anon (and anyone else who made it to the end) - thank you for letting me yap.

I mean you know I gotta ask you about a section of FIYM you’ve been dying to talk about
💜! there's so much I'm always dying to talk about tbh, especially re: jujutsu. but i don't want to give people too many hints on where we're going with that. so instead i'm going to talk about one of my favorite interlude pieces - blueshift!
in science, there is a phenomenon called the doppler effect. you have probably heard of it before, most likely in reference to ambulance/police sirens. (for those unfamiliar:) basically, when a wave is moving towards you, you will perceive it at higher frequency. when it is moving away from you, you will perceive it at lower frequency. in sound, this translates to ambulances coming toward you going wheeeeee and when they are going away from you, they go whoooooo.
Tumblr media
when this happens with visible light, rather than high/low pitch, we are shifting towards the ends of the visible light spectrum - UV (blue/purple, aka wheeeeeee) at the high frequency end, and infrared (red, aka whooooo) at the low frequency end.
Tumblr media
blueshift occurs when waves of light are moving towards you from a moving source. just like the ambulance siren, you receive them at higher frequency than they were emitted at, and in light, this means it shifts blue.
okay, onto the gays - this piece is called blueshift because, well, they are getting closer! although satoru doesn't know that consciously. but the Six Eyes is doing some work for us here by noticing changes in the scene through lighting. it's a pretty subtle hidden allegory (well, the title isn't subtle - but there's not a lot of space devoted to it).
as their conversation progresses, the lighting changes. first, when suguru brings up "we should talk", satoru is actively doomspiraling about suguru knowing he's gay, and he thinks he's losing ground. he thinks that suguru is put off by what happened, and so he is 'moving away'.
Tumblr media
then, as they keep talking, and satoru is in uncertain waters, they go into a tunnel. satoru isn't getting clear light cues. we're grey and white here.
Tumblr media
they talk more. satoru still isn't sure how suguru would take the whole 'gay' thing, but suguru goes on to reassure satoru that he likes him just the way he is. and that's enough. so finally, in satoru's eyes, he shifts blue.
Tumblr media
this was a very fun conversation to write, too, because it is truly a masterclass in absolute dogshit communication.
satoru's thoughts: i'm so gay, i am extremely gay for my hot goth best friend, oh my god what if he thinks i'm gay (because i tried to suck his dick in a linen closet), what if-
suguru's thoughts: gay people are normal, it's fine if you're gay suguru's mouth: "well being girly doesn't mean you're gay"
satoru's thoughts: fuck fuck fuck he doesn't want me to be gay satoru's mouth: "yeah ew of course i'm not gay"
suguru's thoughts: wait wtf is he fucking homophobic suguru's cursed energy: [explodes] suguru's mouth: "right like who gives a fuck about gay people"
satoru's thoughts: wait i give a fuck about gay people ?
apart from the gay, this scene is also about satoru's complicated relationship with normalcy and non-sorcerers. the reason that he doesn't fight back (against mario and luigi) is a messy mix of internalized homophobia and his overwhelming desire to fit in with non-sorcerer society. by acting like a sorcerer - either by using his CT or by pulling out his martial training, he feels like he would be breaking the 'normal' rules. and he wants so badly to be normal because he sees that as a necessary prerequisite for fitting into suguru's life. girliepop's been fucked up since day 1.
p.s. - i love these lines, and i love the brangelina joke right after
The sheer volume of his love for Suguru pushed all the oxygen out of his lungs, but that was okay, that was fine - Satoru’s body would get accustomed to hydrogen fusion. So he kept going, because that was what they did. Because stars burn until they die. Because Satoru had enough cursed energy to outlive the inevitable heat-death of the universe.
thank you for letting me yap @mildlyannoyedscoundrel-blog, i hope this was interesting! 💜💜💜

I have been meaning to ask you this for a while. It's about FIYM, of course, because the series lives rent free in my head. How did falling in love go for Satoru? We know what his initial impression was, but I'm really curious about what did him in. Was it fast? Was he aware it was happening? I really want to know, but if you'd rather keep it a mystery until later chapters, don't mind me.
Ah I'd love to answer this question! <3 I don't think it's a spoiler.
The answer to all of these things is sort of yes and sort of no. In FIYM, Satoru fell in love with Suguru almost immediately, but took a while to realize that that's what was happening. Suguru is his first in a lot of ways, so he has literally nothing to compare the experience to. Suguru is:
One of two people he perceives as on a comparable power level (Yuki being the other)
The first person to meet him without knowing the clans, and therefore sidestep the status difference
His first real gay awakening, as he wouldn't have really interacted as equals with other boys his age except Naoya (who is super homophobic - we'll get to that)
In their first year, Satoru is dealing with a confusing mix of budding feelings: mutual respect, romantic love, and concern about Suguru's powers. Because he's never felt these things before, especially together, he doesn't realize what they are, only that he has never felt so much for anyone else, ever.
Satoru knows (thinks) that what he feels is unusual and wrong. That colors a lot of their early interactions because Satoru doesn't want to be 'caught' with these feelings that he doesn't even fully understand. Now, this is a mix of internalized homophobia but also Gojo clan asceticism (which is an hc, not in text, but I think it's a good way to contrast them with Zen'ins and it fits Satoru's more direct ties to Buddhism and enlightenment).
Satoru feels so much for Suguru that he decides that Suguru can't possibly feel the same, because if he did, then how is he hiding it so well when Satoru is struggling so hard to hide his own feelings? (Answer: They're both very stupid.)
His first big inflection points would be:
Suguru's proof of powers (centipede curse flashback Ch 13 2sorcs) - woah wait this guy is really strong
Suguru telling him to fuck off when they first met (this is actually our very first scene - Ch1 Domains) - woah this guy isn't part of clan society and isn't afraid of me
The extended homoeroticism of physical training and wound care inherent to battle shonens (more specifically the first time he got to patch Suguru up - Ch 6 Domains) - woah this guy is hot oh no why do i like touching male bodies oh fuck oh f-
So it was extremely fast, and Satoru was extremely aware that something was happening. But the process of him recognizing the feeling, coming to terms with it, and allowing himself to have it has been glacially slow. I'm sure his decision to flee to Canada will really help things move along. :)

oh golly! there are a few fics that i hold close to my heart. i have written a lot for jjk, but i'm gonna plug all my fandoms.
string theory - if you read nothing else from my ongoing fire in your mouth series, read this. it's my favorite piece of the verse so far, and tbh i think i kinda snapped here besties. (although I do also recommend that you read the series, especially 2sorcs, which makes me laugh even while I write it) (17k, 3 chapters, T-E, JJK, SatoSugu)
A Real Breakthrough - my favorite smut that I've written, probably. my favorite dialogue/character writing that I've done, definitely. (4k, E, Arcane, JayVik)
Swan Song - Balthus/Yuri Fire Emblem Three Houses still own a large chunk of my heart, although i haven't written for them in a while. i can't recommend my indefinite-hiatus slowburn AU fic for them (oops), but i have some finished pieces I really love for them. this one is my favorite :) (9.4k, Angst and H/C, M, Balthuri)
The Morning Storm: A Bilgewater Serial - this is a super niche, super meta fanfic that stems from the fact that Legend of the Ruined King (LoL singleplayer spin off game) canonically has a character that writes gay fanfic of two other characters. i had a lot of fun with this, and it's probably what got me into writing comedy. (9.5k, Comedy/Satire, 24 chapters, T-E (parody), LoL, TF/Graves)
On the Traditions of the Dol-Intiqua - i love the game series Dreamfall/The Longest Journey, which makes me one of approximately 2 dozen people who know what it is. the worldbuilding is just so cool, and i hope this fic is half as atmospheric as the world deserves. (5.7k, Fluff/Pining, Dreamfall/TLJ, Likho/Kian)
i feel like by the time i see these, the people i follow that i know write have generally already been tagged, so y'know, just jump in if you're into that kind of thing!
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let's spread the self-love 💞
Tricky but I can try!
Canary in the coal mine
Love is in the hands
Joy
Catharsis (I needed to include at least one porn and it’s the nastiest I think)
Witch fic (title too long)

I was reading the last chapter of domains (again) and I think there’s a really interesting juxtaposition between Suguru realizing in the spur of the moment that he would let Satoru do anything to him and being completely genuine about it, vs Satoru (who obsesses over their relationship constantly) saying that Suguru could do anything to him, but stuttering while saying because it isn’t exactly 100% true (I think I remember you saying something about it but I can’t find the post anywhere)
yes! their certainties about boundaries/consent and the drivers behind that claimed blanket consent (emotional vs physical) foil each other!
suguru - genuinely certain, justified physically
satoru - falsely certain, justified emotionally
these always get so long since i yap, and i love talking about stuff like this. i want the writing to speak for itself and convey all this stuff in an organic way, but it is nice to open up the hood and talk about what i am intentionally trying to get at too. so here we go, under the cut:
Satoru
satoru's piece of this is from the girlification section of @detta-pica's ask on string theory.
Tumblr media
satoru would let suguru do anything to him - definitely true, but also very ill-conceived, and on very shaky ground. the way they both interpret satoru's statement also differs:
satoru [stuttering, lie, psyching himself up]: yeah i'd let suguru do anything to me. yeah i'm totally game, i can take it. i could totally set a boundary, but like, i don't need to. (and oh my god what if that makes suguru sad what if it makes him leave what if-) i'm good. i'm so good. i'm so fucking good bro. satoru: [is not good] suguru [immediate, truth, divine revelation]: oh, satoru would let me do anything to him. he's not capable of setting boundaries. this is bad. (but shit it's kind of hot and turns me on but wait shit fuck am i a bad person am i literally unredeemable am i the actual incarnation of evil-
satoru's driving motivation is almost entirely emotional (he wants to fulfill this role), whereas his complications are all physical. he does like sex at a baseline, though. but that's not why he's doing this.
Suguru
from ch 6 domains -
Tumblr media
suguru would let satoru do anything to him - also true, also ill-conceived, but it's on solid ground, in a way.
suguru has a different understanding of boundaries and consent because he's already had his broken. he knows where his lines are, and he is 100% certain that satoru is not going to cross them. i think i may have mentioned this before, but the original way the sex scene in 2sorcs ch 14 played out in rough drafts was essentially:
satoru: "please fuck me" suguru: "uhhh what? i thought you were going to want to fuck me, since you're still pretending you're straight and all. and i was gonna be cool with that. but okay. shit, okay. i guess we're doing this now."
their interpretation of suguru's consent also differs because they're both insane.
satoru [insane]: he can't actually consent to this. oh my god i'm abusing him. i'm taking advantage of him because i'm a gojo (he doesn't care) and a special grade (he is too) and he's straight and doesn't realize i'm actually gay and into him (girl...) suguru [insane plus plus plus]: yeah, i mean, it's whatever. he's a cute, inexperienced little stick man with extreme anxiety. i'm fine letting him experiment. he's way too timid to actually push anything. and even if he did, i don't care, actually, if people do things to my body that i don't like. it's just a body, who cares. it won't hurt me. it's just a physical thing. no connection whatsoever to my mental health. (also no connection to my cursed technique) well, yes, satoru's physical comfort is extremely, viscerally important to me and i am hypervigilant about it. but that's different.
suguru's driving motivation is physical. he is willing to do this because he is so dissociated from his own body that he doesn't clock harm to it or feel ownership over it. which is bad, obviously, but he does have a genuine internal certainty about it. emotionally, it's complicated because he hasn't unpacked why he implicitly supertrusts satoru (and it takes him about 150k words to get there).
we will get more into this in fellas, actually. because in order to unpack suguru's relationship with his body, we kind of need to see the outside perspective (satoru's), since suguru is dead set on Not Thinking About It. and, in his spiral, we will be talking a lot about his CT and the importance of The Body (not the TLT one) in jujutsu.
also, one more thing - it makes me so happy when you/any commenters mention you are rereading FIYM. i reread comfort fics all the time and yet i'm still like "t-they liked it enough to reread?? 🥺🥺🥺"

my 2sorcs gushy post
2sorcs is done at last, and i feel like i've run a marathon (albeit very slowly). now that people have had a chance to read the final chapter, i want to be squishy about it for a minute. so without further ado, I yap under the cut.
it's no secret (because I can't shut the fuck up about it) that i have had a pretty rough past year of grad school. things have often not gone as planned. i'm not where i wanted or expected to be when i started this program. and yet, i think i am happier than i would have been had everything gone to plan. all of the delays and difficulty of my master's degree have forced me to sit down and actually learn how to cope with this shit instead of forcing my way through. apparently (this will shock you), i cope pretty well by writing fanfiction.
i'll be honest, when i started domains, the scope was 40k of PWP under a thin veneer of H/C and comedy. I still wanted to do a little character work, and I couldn't help but do a bit of jujutsu theorycrafting. but i very much expected it to be a one and done thing that i was writing as an easy way to get back into writing fic after a long hiatus.
while writing 2sorcs, i started doing a lot of work unpacking my own anxiety and depression, and it's been quite a journey. but it has been a much more pleasant journey than it might have been, because i can project it onto some gay boys and make them kiss. and (eventually) be happy (maybe).
many of my readers have said very kind things about my characterization in FIYM, and that makes me so happy. 2sorcs, and FIYM in general, is extremely unserious. but underneath the comedy, there's a lot of real sht. i wanted the characters and their ridiculous hangups to feel real, and i wanted their extremely illogical decisions to still make sense. because real people are like that. i'm like that, and so - as most authors do - i put a lot of myself into these characters while i write, and we can feel and grow together. (i can't say that i'm a gay special-grade jujutsu sorcerer in the 2010s, but i think we'd have a few things in common.)
FIYM is also my first time writing comedy! there's something fun about writing serious, artistic fanfic, but there is something freeing about putting the dumbest 2010s shit i can think of onto a page and seeing how much psychic damage i can inflict on my audience (and Nanami). i love that you guys are here for it. it really makes the whole writing process so much more fun.
your comments and your asks have gotten me through some of the roughest months of my life to date, and i am just so grateful to have such a rewarding hobby and community to retreat to when the real world gets dark and cold and shitty. i would not have been able to write this fic, or honestly my thesis, if i didn't have you all cheering me on in the background and reminding me that things i do make people happy. <3
so what's next?
well, 3sorcs, obviously! FIYM is far from over. i feel a liiiiittle guilty leaving you all on such a cliffhanger, but with any luck, you won't have to wait too long. i've had the outline for part 3 in the works for a long time now, although it's nice to sit and take some time to re-work it and make sure it fits the writer i am now, who has grown so much over the past two years. part 3 will be (primarily) from satoru's pov, and it may get more serious, but also more unhinged. i can't wait. i also have plans for a few more interlude pieces, including a longer multichapter focused on shokohime in this verse.
for now, though, i'll take a short break and take some time to read some of the lovely fic in this fandom and some of the books on my tbr to recharge creatively for the next and final leg of this race. and defend my masters if these motherfuckers will get off their asses and send me my test samples. i know that we might be looking at a dip in the jjk fandom, at least until new animation comes out. but i hope that by the time i am back, you guys will be here and ready for some more tomfoolery :)
if you have stuck around through my yapping, here is your reward: a 0-context snippet from part 3, 'fellas is it gay to be his one and only'.

Satoru has tried it before. The, uh… that part. He’s done his research. He’s reviewed the literature. He’s designed his experiments. The results were inconclusive, but that might be because the specimen is flawed. (Set between Chapters 9 and 10 of Two Sorcerers)
Gojo Satoru/Geto Suguru (Solo Gojo Satoru)

Chapter Rated E (for explicit, not for everyone)
Angsty Character Study under a thin veneer of smut
Comedy that gets you the way a reflex hammer makes your knee twitch
Insecurity, identity struggles, and more 2010s flavor internalized homophobia than you could fit into a Space Bag™
happy new year! hope this ruins your day!

I have just DEVOURED the last chap of 2scorc and what can I say.
WHAT CAN I SAY.
I'm in love. I have been screaming about it nonstop with my friend because this fic is just so good.
The foreshadowing. THE FUCKING META FORESHADOWING. I die.
Legit crying in the club during satoru's phone call. Poor boy.
Also I love how you write dialogues both in terms of words and in terms of layout. Extremely pleasant to read, chef's kiss.
I will leave a comment once a)I become more coherent and b)I'll finish re-reading the whole thing
Just fyi I'm now addicted to this verse and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for part 3, your jujutsu world building and lore is immaculate.
I'm in tears and broken by your writing, 10/10 would recommend (I have never forwarded a fanfic so fast in my life)
aaaaaa thank you so much <3
there's so many little breadcrumbs in previous chapters that lead to the hansel and gretel style witch cottage that is this nightmare of an ending (for Satoru, anyway :) )
the formatting has been particularly fun in this fic, and i wanted to pull back the curtain a little bit. the text alignment in this chapter in particular is a way to represent where the thoughts are coming from, for Satoru. so when you see a right-align, whether it's dialogue or an intrusive thought of his, it's kind of meant to signal hostility. center-aligns are complicated and unsure. and then left-aligns are standard character stuff. it's a similar thing for Suguru's dreams in previous chapters.
i've yapped a little bit about it here, but this is another inspiration i took from Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. (the other inspiration being the mission formatting in ch. 12).
when i write stuff like this, there's always a little voice in the back of my head going like 'oh god is this cringe' and 'will they think i'm taking myself way too seriously' etc etc. but.
a.) fanfiction is exactly the place for this semi-cheesy meta poem-prose fusion bullshit. b.) i hope no one is at risk of thinking that the twilight-rebecca black friday-minecraft parody song fanfic takes itself too seriously.
anyway! i am so glad you liked it, and it always super tickles me to hear about you guys talking about it with your friends :) I talk about writing this fanfic to my irl friends with the same energy of spraying an unsuspecting sunbather with a high-powered SuperSoaker™. and i get about the response that you'd expect, but I think they prefer it to me explaining the specific details of vore (more complicated than you would think).
i've got so much left for part 3, especially hyperspecfic jujutsu worldbuilding bullshit that we've been building up to since domains. in particular, we're gonna get really into Suguru's technique, barrier techniques, and RCT. we're gonna see clan politics, higher-ups, and of course, Satoru's taste in fanfiction.

ive been sitting on my 2sorcs thoughts for so long and i just have to pop in to say….talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping and everything else lady gaga said. was expecting that last chapter to hurt but golly gee did not think the shit would be hitting the fan at such treacherous velocities. amazing work.
a few questions: will we be seeing suguru’s perspective of that clown show of a date in fellas? did he know it was a date? was he picking up what satoru was putting down? why did that go so badly for everyone involved 😭
obsessed w u and ur work. hope you’re doing well!!
💜💜💜💜💜
you are so sweet! this ask made my day :)
when you're gojo satoru, you gotta go all out. shit hit the fan at mach 5. (stay tuned for more under the cut)
we most likely won't see suguru's pov in fellas, but it might be a fun side piece tbh. i may have mentioned this in a different ask, but the whole final chapter (with some diff scenes) was originally written in suguru's pov, so like, the words are there (well i may have deleted them but they're in my mind).
suguru absolutely knew/thought it was a date, he was very much picking up what satoru was putting down, and he was indeed actively flirting and trying his best to boyfriend at any given moment (holding doors, sharing jackets, paying for food, offering to beat a guy up). we know why it went bad - because we are in satoru's head and satoru is IDIOT DOOM SPIRAL. but suguru doesn't know that, so imagine what he thinks... (he's definitely going to blame himself)
i am doing unwell, but somewhat intentionally, so it's fine. i got my first round thesis revisions 2 days ago and have blasted through them. i should be finishing my 90 pages of edits today if all goes well, which is a pretty blazing pace. the good thing is that it's mostly text/formatting/phrasing edits plus some procedural stuff (caption format, etc), and i didn't get very much criticism on my science! yay! that means i did it right! unfortunately now i have to do the word > LaTeX conversion, which I have been avoiding for a reason... (readers call in if you want to vent about LaTeX)
i'm defending on 4/10, which gives me a ton of time (most people here have about a 3 week turnaround from thesis completion to defense, mine will be about 7 weeks - my advisors are extremely hard to pin down and get responses from, so i have to compensate by having my shit extremely together)
once this is over, i can take a deep breath and go full tilt back into fanfic writing, healing my body from this, and learning french 🍁.
p.s. (secret bonus info if you made it through my ramble) if all goes well, i think you're going to get the first chapter of fellas very ahead of schedule. for reasons i think i want to post it before some of the side pieces, i think it'll set up those very well. but it means there will be a big gap between ch 1 and ch 2, so i was like, unsure about that. but i reaaaaally wanna post ch 1 so. :)

gamers we are so close
we're at about 16k right now, and that may end up being closer to 17k, so, i hope the wait is worth it :)
(please cheerlead me, editing this chapter is killing my soul)

ok this looked fun! thank you for the tag @marichild and sorry it took me so long to get to it lol. there's a lot i'm keeping secret, but these are from 3 diff pieces in my WIPs so i feel like if i overwhelm you with chaos then it won't be too much of a spoiler :)
The word is CURE so:
C: Cause, see, it’s hard to find porn that looks like them. Because there’s not a lot of gay Asian guys bold enough to post videos, and the ones who do aren’t tall or platinum blonde. But it’s okay, because Satoru doesn’t really need to see himself in the porn - that’s not really who he’s looking at - it’s hard to find porn of guys that look like Suguru, even though he’s, like, the hottest goddamn being in existence of any race or gender or species, probably.
U: Uraume’s frost-tipped fingers tightened around the overlarge mug. The strangely blocky modern lettering spelled out ‘All You Need is Mom’. “Dude, you have got to get laid.”
R: (ok I cheated here, I seriously didn't have ANY Rs) “You can’t reincarnate as a rock, they’re not alive,” Satoru um-actuallys. And Suguru rolls his eyes. And Suguru laughs. And Suguru smiles. And Satoru feels like he’s choking on a flurry of snowflakes. “I bet you were a blobfish,” he adds, his frozen tongue rattling in his mouth like ice in a glass.
E: “Egg waffles?” Suguru suggests, “There’s a theater right by that cafe you like. The 24-hour one? How about we go there? Play it by ear.”
this was fun! and i needed to share something before i literally exploded. that would be messy. tagging @detta-pica with the word QUETZALCOATLUS...
kidding, although that would be legitimately impressive. Zs feel hard. :)
How about LIGHT? I'm in a New Years mood. :)

I like to imagine that the reason Satoru’s clan raised ass is so good at laundry is just cause he spent like a week being reeeaaally into the housewife fantasy /hj
Fr though I love the interpretation of Satoru being a lot better at day to day life stuff cause it’s not one I see often. What made you go that route?
lmao, definitely more than a week maybe three-ish years
good question! i actually have a lot to say.
in the FIYM-verse, my headcanon for Satoru's upbringing is that, while he stayed in the Gojo clan system until he was able to escape to Jujutsu Tech, he bounced around a lot within the clan system after his mom died and his dad left the clan system. this is a pretty specific headcanon and it partially conflicts with the stuff gege said in the satoru 30questions interview, but it actually matches pretty nicely with his broader characterization.
in particular, i really latch onto his desire for normalcy. that's one of the major theses of FIYM, actually for both Satoru and Suguru, although it takes a different shape for both of them. Satoru is missing the normalcy of growing up outside the clan system, which Suguru had from his pre-jujutsu society years. Suguru is missing the internal normalcy of coming to terms with his powers, and it not being this curse in and of itself, which Satoru had from growing up in the clan system.
anyway, i think Satoru bounced around within the Gojo clan because after losing his primary parents, lots of subfactions would have wanted to take on the role of adoptive parents to build rapport and clout because he's got the mantle of the Six Eyes/Limitless. but because Satoru was a little shit and restless in the cage of the Gojo clan, no one would have been able to handle him for too long. that's part of why even in JJT, he struggles to put down roots in a living space, and his decor/personalization is pretty sparse.
when you move around a lot, one thing, maybe the only thing that stays the same is the way you take care of yourself. laundry, cooking, mending, etc. Satoru is naturally good at everything because of the Six Eyes (subconscious optimization of all physical motions/efficiency of tasks), but I actually think he'd be good at these specific housekeeping things more as a coping mechanism than anything.
lots of people cared about the well-being of the bearer of Six Eyes/Limitless. but not a lot of people genuinely cared about Satoru. I think that drove him to be hyper-independent in his own caretaking after his mom died. the idea of sharing these tasks, the domesticity, the one bit of normalcy he was able to carve out for himself in his chaotic upbringing - it's a lot. in FIYM he hasn't really unpacked that yet, but subconsciously, as you see in string theory, it's really all he's ever wanted.

hi hana!! so i’ve been obsessed w this since string theory: can you tell us a little bit more about your interpretation of the six eyes? i know it’s said that satoru can see in thermal and infrared, is there anything else he can see?
Oh yeah! This is a fun question! I just got stuck in traffic for an hour (as a passenger), so I am going to over-explain this. And I'm bored so I'm going to highlight it with pretty colors like I'm writing in my diary or something.
Satoru's senses basically span the ✨entire energy spectrum✨, because the Six Eyes gives him the ability to work with all types of energy. He can see the EM spectrum (infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet), he can see thermal energy, he can sense (not exactly see) some other types of energy (electrical, sound, chemical), and he can see cursed energy like we do as JJK readers (plus some extra details like the taste, color, and texture of cursed energy).
I'm about to be insufferably STEM, so more under the cut:
Electromagnetic (EM) Spectrum
The EM spectrum has infrared light at low frequencies/high wavelengths, the visible light spectrum, and then UV at high frequencies/low wavelengths. Satoru is kind of like a mantis shrimp in that he sees way more colors than a human. He's got more rods and cones and stuff. (I like physics and chemistry, don't press me on the biology).
I don't really go into the UV part that much, but I like to think that would contribute to his sunlight sensitivity! He's not an outside pet.
The blindfold blocks out the EM spectrum because the fabric blocks the transmission of visible light in the form of photons, packets of light energy. (this is a secret tool that will help us later)
Electrical Energy
I haven't really gone into electrical much either, but like he can see the flow of cursed energy, he'd be able to sense the flow of electrical energy, i.e. the movement of electrons. It gives him good circuit sense.
Sound Energy
Sound energy is vibrations* (another tool that will help us later). He doesn't really see them per se, because even the thought of him actually seeing the vibrations in the air is overwhelming, and it would block his vision so much that I don't think it makes sense for the Six Eyes
I think he would feel them with the Six Eyes kind of like a gentle breeze. It makes him ultra perceptive, but it's still another form of feedback for him to deal with.
This is why I make Satoru so terrible with enclosed spaces. If you can see those forms of energy, you're seeing not only the original instance where they're emitted, but also every secondary instance when things reflect or refract. So sound bouncing around in a train, for instance, is completely overwhelming to the Six Eyes if he's not able to use jujutsu to filter it, which I think is a skill he wouldn't master until maybe his mid 20s.
Thermal Energy
Now this is the fun one.
The Six Eyes gives Satoru the ability to see and sense the energy in things in its various forms, because he can convert it all to cursed energy, or back. So, when you think of thermal energy, you probably think of thermal cameras, which represent thermal energy in the color spectrum, which kind of looks like light.
But thermal energy is very much not light - it's actually motion. Specifically, it is atomic vibrations. The more energy something has, the more it vibrates, and that is actually the basis for what we call 'heat' or 'temperature'.
If you go deep into the philosophy of temperature, it's all a sham. It's the way we choose to interpret and understand a phenomenon we can't really see (atomic vibration) translated into something we can measure (but our scales are all relative and kind of fake. I'm looking at you, Rankine!). But that's a conversation for my very Serbian thermodynamics professor. Existential doubt really flows better in a Slavic accent.
Anyway, remember photons? Okay, so, heat and sound are not light, right, they are vibration. So instead of quantifying them as light packets, we quantify them as vibration packets, which are called phonons. I reference phonons a lot in the fic, but probably not in a way where I have appreciably explained anything about them well to non-STEM girlies.
If you think about photons/photon emission as throwing a ball of magical light at something, you can think of phonons as throwing a slinky at someone. (Which I wouldn't recommend, actually. Slinkies are remarkably difficult to throw.)
Cursed Energy
Okay this one is a gimme but obviously I have to list it. In the JJK animanga, we the reader see the cursed energy auras/flames around people, but it's understood that those are not actually seen in-universe, at least for non-Six Eyes. It's kind of dumb, but it also kind of makes sense pragmatically. If all sorcerers could see cursed energy, then it really ruins surprise elements, residual coverup, and general battle mechanics. Of course, some sorcerers are known to cover up their cursed energy, but if all of the powerful baddies did that then it wouldn't look as cool. It's whatever.
Also, the whole 'training to suppress your cursed energy release' is a hard sell if we also say that literally any sorcerer can see CE. So this is why Suguru isn't aware of when he's leaking CE. He can't see it, and then he also can't really taste/smell it because people go noseblind to their own scent.
In FIYM, Satoru is the only one that can see see it. The rest of them can still sense it, but they sense it by smell, taste, and most importantly, vibes.
Thesis: Why Energy is Gay
Okay so yes I did this to answer the question "what does Satoru see through the blindfold". But I also did this to make it gay gay homosexual. (In the grand tradition of JJK)
Touch Sensitivity
Because Satoru is sensitive to kinetic energy, living things are incredibly potent to him from a sensory perspective. People are made of energy - particularly thermal energy, chemical energy (although this is potential energy which we haven't touched on but I do reference it here and there), sound, and, of course, cursed energy.
When Satoru touches people, he feels all of the vibrational energy from those kinetic energy sources as well as the cursed energy, which to him has textures on top of the vibes, colors, and smell/taste. So of course it's overwhelming. Every touch is combined with vibration, which is very gay, and would take a long time to get used to, even if he never formed the habit of using Infinity to cut himself off from the world.
In FIYM, it's not only a fear/safety/vulnerability thing, it's also a necessary filtration step that he uses for the world. Part of this is because I kept him in Kyoto/the clan setting in his backstory for a long time, so he would have had less sound and population density to deal with. Tokyo would have been super overwhelming for him.
Information Filtering
Speaking of filtering, there are two ways for Satoru to cut down on the amount of information his senses are getting.
One is to block them, which is what he does with the blindfold (blocks photons) and Infinity (blocks phonons). Gay, tsundere, and hot.
The other is to flood or mask his senses, which is what happens when Suguru infuses the blindfold with cursed energy. It's not that Satoru can't see anything, it's that all he can see is the cursed energy, and it blocks out his ability to sense anything else because of how strong and close it is. This is meant to be a direct analog to the phenomenon of detector/sensor saturation, which is to say that a detector has hit its limit of how much it can read/measure/detect, and so everything else is lost.
When Suguru flares his cursed energy, he's doing a baby version of that. He's flooding Satoru's detector (The Six Eyes) with his cursed energy (which is easy on the eyes, for Satoru) and that inhibits his ability to sense the other pesky things. And it makes him feel better.
Physics is gay, physics can be so gay. Greg's biggest sin was not capitalizing on how gay the physics can be. Any day now we'll get an announcement for his next project, a gloomy isekai titled: Transported To a Dark Academia Yaoi Battle School And I Fall For My Physics Tutor?
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the over-explanation, thank you for the ask, I love getting the chance to ramble about some of the science. :)
