The Rainbow Room opened on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza (then called the RCA Building) on October 3, 1934. The opening was a society benefit for the Lenox Hill Neighborhood Association and drew a crowd with "a dazzle of surnames that ran from Astors and Auchinclosses to Warburgs and Whitneys."

Tag der Deutschen Einheit

German Unity Day is celebrated on October 3 to commemorate the unification of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic into a single federal Germany on the same date in 1990. A public holiday, the day is characterized by concerts, communal meals, speeches by politicians, and fireworks.

History of National Unity Day

After WWII, Germany was divided into four military sectors, each controlled by France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was formed and, on October 7 of the same year, the German Democratic Republic (also known as the DDR — ‘Deutsche Demokratische Republik’) was formed.

The political tensions in post-war Europe did not allow much interaction between the people of the two countries. The DDR exercised strong resistance against repression of its political opponents. Thousands of people were kept under surveillance by the German police.

On September 4, 1989, a peaceful protest was carried out by the people of Leipzig against the DDR government. More such demonstrations in other DDR cities took place calling for political reforms and the opening of the borders. And on November 9 that year, the checkpoints between the two German countries were opened and people could travel freely once more. This date marked the ‘fall’ of the Berlin Wall.

Democratic elections further paved the way for the people to come together in the DDR. Finally, in August 1990, the leaders of both countries signed the Treaty of Unification, and Germany’s unification was made official on October 3, 1990.

The Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate are two very important symbols of Germany’s division and the unification of Germany in 1990. Images of both of these are put on display on German Unity Day all across Germany. The day is celebrated as a three-day festival around the Brandenburg Gate and at the Reichstag around Platz der Republik.

You can never make out his facial features. His hair? Milk chocolate brown. His fashion style? Adorable sweaters with cute sweater paws because they're hand-me-downs from his older sister. His height? Just a tad bit shorter than you.

You can remember every little habit he has: how he picks the nail of his right hand's index finger when he's nervous, or when he taps a distinct beat on the nearest surface when he's excited. When he leans on your shoulder and curls up by your side, resting his chin on his knees because he feels most comfortable that way.

Or how he refuses to not hold your hand when walking around in public, how he doesn't talk to you unless no one else is around, preferring to communicate with you using a secret code you both made up. Or how he avoids looking at mirrors or reflective surfaces, be it glass shop displays or the shiny black paint of the car. Or how he seems to just... disappear when you're at the hospital for your treatment. He always appears again when you wake up, woozy from the medicine. And then he'll apologise profusely, saying he just can't stand the thought of hospitals.

You remember every tidbit about him, even his name! It's Parfait, spelled just like the pastry. Coincidentally, that turns out to be his favourite food.

It's a little odd how every time you try to introduce him to your family, they'd look everywhere and in every direction, yet somehow never see him. It's not like he's a ghost, because if he is, how can you see him? It just doesn't make sense. Your friends look at you a little odd, but they don't make fun of you or mock you. Everyone's worried for you.

National Caramel Custard Day

In a heavy saucepan, cook ¾ cup sugar over low hear until melted and golden, constantly stirring. Pour the caramelized sugar into eight 6-ounce custard cups so their bottoms are coated and set aside for 10 minutes.

In a bowl, beat 6 eggs, 3 cups milk, ¾ cup sugar, and 2 tsp vanilla extract until combined. The mix must not be foamy. Pour over caramel. Place the cups in two 8-inch baking pans. Pour boiling water in pans to a 1-inch depth. Bake for about 45 minutes at 350 °C. Unmold before serving.
