saw this on twitter and as someone who loves 1. talking about my opinions and 2. talking about this show, i am of course going to take this excuse to talk abt my opinions of this show. im gonna throw all of it into reblogs of this post tho so im not clogging up the tag fdjkhfsjk
anyway days 1-7 (bc im late to the party) under the cut:
Day 1: when did you discover ofmd?
probably same as most ppl on here, ofmd was suddenly all over my dashboard at some point around mid to late march 2022. one post i saw was a link to a google drive with the episodes and i ended up watching the entire series like, the next day.
Day 2: first impression of ofmd
ok tbh my first impression based on the very first gifsets i was seeing was "this show looks kinda stupid idk if i can take these costumes seriously." then during the first few minutes of s1 i was like "oh yeah this is definitely a taika project, this feels so much like wwdits." both of these impressions no longer hold true lol the costumes are SO fun and past the bit in the pilot of stede narrating to lucius the wwdits vibes are no longer present.
Day 3: first ofmd pic in gallery
first ofmd pic in my phone is the uncropped version of this fanart:
Tumblr media
ed just hanging out with my doggy
Day 4: reasons why you like ofmd
i tend to enjoy lighthearted comedy tv and also shows with shorter episodes. this is why most of the media i've consumed for years is just cartoons hjfkhkghfskj BUT outside of those basic preferences the HEART the characters the writing the comedy the romance the soundtrack the set design the props the storylines the cast the crew. there's almost no part of this show that im not in love with.
Day 5: fav main character(s)
Tumblr media
Day 6: fav supporting character(s)
an incomplete collection in no particular order:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this show has so many blorbos
Day 7: songs that remind you of your fav characters
uhhh mostly just the soundtrack songs (high on a rocky ledge, the chain, perfect day, avalanche, miles from nowhere, the beautiful ones by prince) bc im bad at listening to music. one time i was listening to hurt by johnny cash and i started crying abt ed. jinx by green day is kinda stedecore. there's a handful of todrick hall songs that my mutuals have related to ofmd characters and that's given me brainrot.

hi all! 🏴‍☠️
twitter saw it first, but i thought it'd be great if tumblr got in on the fun as well!
there are *checks notes* 29 days until our flag means death season 2, so i thought it'd be cool to cook up a little 30 day challenge (ofmd style) to collectively remember our favorite moments before it's release 🩷
feel free to participate & use the prompts 🫶🏾 to stay on track, you can post days 1 & 2 at the same time (if you'd like) :^)

let's sail together until october 5th! 🏴‍☠️💖

Way behind, doing it anyway!
1. When did you discover OFMD? A little later than everyone else. I think I started watching it after all the episodes had dropped, and people were talking about the Gay Pirates.
2. What was your first impression? I didn't quite hate it, and I wasn't sure I'd watch past the first three episodes. That was a surprise to me because I like Kiwi humor. I think the problem was I'd been hearing all about how the show was Amazingly Gay and the End of Queerbaiting and a Big Gay Romcom--and that's just not evident the first time you watch the first three episodes. Amazingly Gay gets a reasonable start, to be fair, and all of it is impossible to miss on rewatch. But the first time through, the End of Queerbaiting and a Big Gay Romcom feel like ridiculous oversells. And even with all the casually depicted queerness in the first three episodes, its amount of Amazingly Gay felt like not enough somehow? It might be partly that Stede presents as such a Camp Gay, and Thor Ragnarok made me a bit suspicious of Taika's handling of that type (in retrospect, that was almost certainly the fault of the MCU). That said, I was totally here for Taika, and he doesn't fully appear in the first three eps.
3. First OFMD pic in gallery
Nah, I'm not going all the way back for that. Here's the most recent still OFMD pic I've reblogged:
Tumblr media
4. Reasons you like OFMD I love OFMD for all the reasons I thought I wouldn't make it past episode 3. 😂
I love the pervasive, matter-of-fact presentation of queerness in all its rich variety. I love the Big Gay Romance, and all the other supporting queer romances. I love the Revenge family. I love their deep, multifarious, matter-of-fact diversity. I love that these characters exist within and sometimes rub up against a world that, like the one we know, is deeply antagonistic to them. I love that OFMD handles racism with the same gently brutal realism as it does anti-queerness. Those two elements of the show break me so hard, in such a good way. I also love the hard switch Rhys gives Stede between Bumbling Bumbler and Daddy in Charge, and I love how he adapts it as the situation calls for. (It's literally the biggest thing that convinced me to keep watching despite my misgivings. It takes 20 minutes into S1E1 to first see it, and then, damn.) I love Ed's wet cat energy. I love Stede's hair. I love Ed's hair. I love the Revenge. I love the shifting flashbacks and dream/story sequences. I love Izzy as an antagonist, and the painfully realistic toxic relationship between him and Ed that fuels the antagonism. And I love how Izzy constantly shoots himself in the foot. I love all the supporting male characters of color: Frenchie and Olu and Fang and Roach and Ivan, and how most of them are big guys and are so sexy and I just....yeah.
5. Favorite main character
Ed. I am Ed coded to the absolute max. And he's sexy AF, in all his guises.
6. Favorite supporting character(s)
I am both glad and not to see that "(s)." Could I choose just one? No. Since I am allowed to choose multiple, is it going to look like I'm naming the whole cast? Yep!
Top of the top: Frenchie.
Followed closely by Olu, Mary, Lucius, and Fang.
Honorable mentions: Roach, Nana, the Swede, Buttons, Evelyn, and Alma.
I also love the native community on shipwreck island, Hornberry, and Mister "We Could Have Made Magic." (Jim is too past-me coded for me to love, and Jackie doesn't rate for me yet; I suspect both will change with season 2.)
7. Songs that remind you of your fav characters
Halsey's The Lighthouse is my Stede abandons Ed at the dock theme. Elza Soares' Coracao do mar and Phoebe Bridgers' Motion Sickness also remind me of Ed. White Flag by Joseph for Stede. Here's my OFMD playlist:
8. Underrated character
Frenchie. Frenchie does not get his due in this fandom, and it's a damn shame.
9. Character you resonate most with
Ed, hands down.
10. Character you hated at first but grew to love
Buttons
11. Favorite duo
Frenchie and Olu
12. Scene that made you laugh
Frenchie naming the Pyramid Scheme
13. Scene that made you cry
The bathtub confession
14. Favorite episode
S1E5, The Best Revenge is Dressing Well
15. Favorite quote
"Have you ever been sketched?" --Lucius
16: Favorite line delivery
"Your face." --Roach

Makes me literately insane that “The Kraken” was created when a child had to take up arms and protect himself and his mother. It’s hypervigilant, it hurts, but it came from love. The rage and violence are a means to an end, it’s simply what’s been proven to keep him safe.

Lately I've been feeling a lack of artistic inspiration outside of wanting to keep drawing cute moments for favorite ships, so I've kind of picked up the oldschool 30 day OTP challenge as a source of inspiration. I'm very much not doing it "traditionally;" I'm not limiting any drawing to a single day, I'm not insisting on doing one after another with nothing else in between, and there's a strong likelihood I'll be doing various challenges depending on which characters I'm feeling most inspired by at any given time. Basically what I'll be doing is when I don't have something specific I want to be working on, I'll do whichever prompt is next for the ship I feel like drawing (starting at Prompt 1 for each ship) and go through it like that. I've been on a hard BlackBonnet kick since first watching OFMD in October so you can more or less expect quite a bit of them for the time being. This isn't my favorite thing I've drawn for them by a long shot but I feel like part of that is that this was the first OTP prompt pic I did to fill an inspiration gap so that could well have something to do with it. One of my favorite things is how over half the OTP prompt list are things that canonically happened in one way or another for them in the show, which just flat out thrills my little shipper heart, but I'm trying to challenge myself a little further by (A) not drawing anything directly from the show for their challenge, and (B) not doing any AU art (not that I ever am much of one for AUs in the first place, but I've found I'm much more accepting of it when it comes to OFMD somehow). I think of this as being after they've been in their Innkeepers Era for a while, or whatever that era inevitably devolves into.

OFMD, racism, and the omission of slavery
TLDR: There's great consensus that Our Flag Means Death knocks it out of the park depicting queer lived experience. That it is a show by queers for queers. There's no such consensus that OFMD does the same for racialized identities. I firmly believe that it does, and that the contention comes from white fans publicly Not Getting It, and fans of color feeling frustrated by that. There's a strain of criticism from viewers of color that wishes OFMD had gone harder on racism (especially wanting it to have named racialized chattel slavery as the source of Stede's wealth), and while I sympathize with that wish, I'm not sure I need to see it in my cozy gay pirate romance, not least because I'm not sure it would do much to change white fans' behaviors. Ultimately, I don't need the extra pain for a reward that is unlikely to materialize.
Writing out my answer to Day 4 of the 30 Day OFMD Challenge/Countdown to Season 2, "Reasons you like OFMD," made me articulate some of my thoughts on the show's ("gently, brutally realistic," in my words) handling of racism vs its near omission of the racialized chattel slavery that defined the economy it takes place in.
I understand and sympathize with the criticism that the show does not at least name slavery as the source of Stede's wealth. At some level I do want the show to at least that do that, and I feel disappointment that it doesn't. Or hasn't yet, and regardless of whether it does so in season 2, that it didn't do it out of the gate. It would have been, weirdly, an easy mention to include.
Take the piano lifters in S1E10. One of them says that they're being "paid" only to lift the piano halfway. I can understand this as an illustration that there were free people of color in Bridgetown, but I don't think the show at that point has addressed the pervasiveness of slavery directly enough to earn that beat, if that's what the writers were going for. Either they needed to have named the source of wealth in the society well before that, or they missed an opportunity to do it here. The line could have been "We don't have to get it in the window, only lift it halfway up. Master's orders," and cut to Stede. Maybe even Stede looking queasy (about something else). That would have done the trick.
The other moments when the show addresses slavery are much less oblique than my charitable reading of the paid workmen: Olu telling Stede he has no alternative to piracy; Frenchie and Roach dipping on "Man for sale!"; the British officer calling Frenchie a slave; Frenchie having been "in service;" the aristos at the boat party having slaves explicitly so-called on board; and Ed punching Izzy partly for buying him (and to Izzy's one great credit, him admitting that was fair).
When it comes to racism beyond slavery, OFMD gives us so, so much. Ed's public image. Every last damn thing about S1E5. Ed's relationship with Izzy. Ed's relationship with Frenchie. Ed's relationship with Fang. Lucius and Fang's first flirtation. Fang, Fang, Fang. Ed's backstory. Jack's gross fucking nickname for Ed. Stede's obliviousness and the ways it evolves. The ways the crew interacts with the outside world, sometimes down to how they are positioned in a shot, or absent from a discussion. The natives on shipwreck island. The ways the show chooses to maintain historical accuracy in casting (a pirate show allows for so much diversity and they use that so effectively) and the ways it chooses to upend them (Taika as Ed, Ashna Sharan as The Widow Ellen Conroy--both of which serve to highlight that British colonial destruction extended well beyond the period when the show is set).
Here's the thing: I don't think OFMD is any less direct in addressing racism than it is in addressing anti-queerness, especially given that racial identity is a secondary theme in the show. The most explicit and physically violent act of anti-queerness we see is young Stede and the rowboat incident. I feel that S1E5 is at least as explicit (it's certainly as breathtaking and nauseating for me) about racism and, to be fair, chattel slavery. We don't see someone killed for their for queerness, and we don't see enslaved people whipped in a field, and we don't need to. I'm glad we don't. We know those things are there, out of frame; we're over here vibing with our escapees and living out their revenge fantasies, and if we feel survivor's guilt, well. Who among us doesn't have experience dealing with that?
What I do think happened is that OFMD's target audience, queers, know to look for all the queer coding and subtext and situations and antagonisms and joys and diversity and lived experiences and revenge fantasies that the show so plentifully offers. It offers very nearly as rich a banquet for those of us who have lacked seeing the lived experience of racialized identity depicted that deeply onscreen--but white queers, who are the bulk of the audience, generally don't know how to see that. And boy, are they vocal about the many, many ways in which they miss the point. And so I can understand wishing that the show had bashed them over the head with the Slavery is Foundational and Racism is Bad sticks just a little bit harder. I just--don't need to watch it in my cozy, gay pirate romcom. I don't need the extra pain, and I don't think me seeing it would change white fans' behavior much at all. There's plenty of other media out there that has as its whole point, Slavery == Evil and Racism Kills. If white viewers of OFMD haven't gotten that message already elsewhere, they're not going to get it here. And I don't need their obtuseness shaping my comfort show to their needs.

Jess Watches // Thu 19 Oct Synopses & Favourite Scenes
Frasier (with mum) 5x09 Perspectives on Christmas
While receiving massages for their holiday stress, each member of the Crane family relates the story of the last few days, with subtle differences based on their own perspectives.
Finally an ensemble episode this season! It a Christmas miracle. Hilarious that the neighbours explanation for Niles's ineptitude was that he is "Dr. Crane's brother."
Chucky 3x03 Jennifer's Body
Chucky's complex motivations are revealed; Tiffany is tried for Jennifer Tilly's murder spree.
Tiffany & Nica are back! Woo hoo! I always enjoy episodes more when they're doing a c t i n g. Tiffany with multiple tit-ilating outfit changes and Nica finally getting some justice.
The Consultant 1x06 Glass
Patoff continues his bizarre mind games, now including Craig's fiancée. Craig returns from sick leave to find changes in the office. Elaine discovers a disturbing trend in the newly developed computer game.
So the boy who killed Sang is Patoff's A.I baby and they're studying human behaviour by testing it's limits. idk at this point. No idea where the story's going but really enjoying the mystery of it.
Our Flag Means Death 2x05 The Curse of the Seafaring Life
As Blackbeard remains plagued by the distrust of his crew, Izzy schools Stede on how to be an effective captain.
Them actually talking about, and trying to process their traumas. And being more mindful of their harmful behaviour and how they treat others. Also, the proposal was so sweet and intimate. I love that it was a moment shared just between them.
Gen V 1x01 God U.
Since 1965, Godolkin University has trained some of the smartest superheroes the world has ever known, including three current members of the Seven. The university continues to offer support to all students.
I was about to stop watching a couple of minutes in because yet again Kripke &co. had killed the mother. And I didn't want another show of him traumatizing characters by kiling the women in their life. But literally a few seconds later the dad got killed too so I guess I'll allow it if it's equal opportunity traumatizing lol
