Mais depuis quelques années, l'établissement de prestige, fondé en 1964, se porte mal. Les services proposés ne justifient plus les quelque 20 000 euros annuels dont s'acquittent les parents. Tersac doit trouver un second souffle. Un joli challenge pour Aldrick Allal, repreneur en mars de ce collège-lycée. Autour de la «marque» Tersac, l'homme d'affaires qui sévit dans l'éducation depuis une vingtaine d'années, entend développer un réseau d'internats aux quatre coins de la France. «Je vends du luxe», résume-t-il.

Le basculement de l'éducation dans le secteur privé lucratif est-il écrit? Image dégradée de l'école publique, saturation du privé sous contrat, parents demandeurs de pédagogies alternatives, type Montessori, ou de cursus internationaux… La voie est libre pour les investisseurs privés dans l'enseignement secondaire, voire primaire. Au-delà du traditionnel créneau des «boîtes à bac».

«Nous avons réussi à créer un véritable univers Ionis. Les familles font confiance à notre pédagogie par projet»

«Si j'étais plus jeune, je me lancerais sans hésiter», explique Fabrice Bardèche, 68 ans. Il est l'un des artisans de Ionis Education Group, le plus ancien et le principal groupe d'enseignement supérieur privé de l'Hexagone. Fondée en 1980, avec la création de l'Iseg - une école de commerce pensée alors comme une alternative aux universités et grandes écoles -, la société commerciale compte désormais 22 établissements, parmi lesquels l'école d'ingénieur Epita. Chiffre d'affaires? Dix millions d'euros. «Nous avons réussi à créer un véritable univers Ionis. Les familles font confiance à notre pédagogie par projet. Je suis certain qu'elles seraient séduites par des collèges ou des lycées Ionis, un univers normé que les familles d'expatriés pourraient retrouver à Paris, Osaka ou Mexico…» Pour Fabrice Bardèche, le marché est mûr. Et certains l'ont bien compris, du monde des entrepreneurs à celui des fonds d'investissement.

L'an dernier, les fondateurs d'Ipesup, spécialisé dans la préparation aux concours des grandes écoles, ont cédé leur bébé pour un montant de 30 millions d'euros au financier Bertrand Léonard. Lequel veut agrandir le groupe et développer l'offre dans le secondaire. «Les investisseurs fonctionnent par cycle de trois à six ans. Lors de la revente, la seule valorisation des locaux permet de faire une plus-value, explique Arnaud Parienty, auteur de l'ouvrage School business(Éd. La Découverte). Certains misent sur des marques qui vont mal. Ils font généralement un bon boulot d'entrepreneurs. Il n'y a pas de secret: pour faire du profit à long terme, il faut faire du bon travail!» résume-t-il. Repris en 2012 par trois actionnaires - dont Philippe Sereys de Rothschild -, le Cours Hattemer, dans le VIIIe arrondissement parisien, réputé pour sa pédagogie à l'ancienne, a changé de mains fin 2017. L'école fondée en 1882 par une préceptrice alsacienne, qui a vu passer dans ses murs Françoise Sagan, Rainier de Monaco ou Polnareff, a été reprise par Providence Equity Partner, un fonds américain.

Quel est le poids de ces sociétés à but lucratif possédant des écoles, collèges ou lycées? Insignifiant, pour l'heure, en termes d'effectifs. À ce jour, 73.000 élèves - soit 0,5 % de l'effectif soumis à l'obligation scolaire - sont scolarisés dans quelque 1300 écoles «hors contrat». Si l'on met de côté les 300 établissements confessionnels - essentiellement catholiques —, abritées par des fondations ou bénéficiant de subventions en tant qu'organisme à but non lucratif, reste tout au plus 1000 structures commerciales. «Il y a des places à prendre», résume Martine Depas, partenaire spécialisée en éducation à la Financière de Courcelles, qui décrit «un marché en plein essor». «Beaucoup d'écoles se réclamant de la pédagogie Montessori se créent. Le phénomène est très parisien, très bobo. Mais nous n'en sommes qu'au début», ajoute-t-elle.

● Annie Reithmann, entrepreneuse philosophe

Pour Annie Reithmann, 62 ans, l'aventure a commencé en 1990, au côté de Dove Attia, le producteur de comédies musicales - connu du grand public pour sa participation en 2003 au jury de l'émission «La Nouvelle Star» -, et par ailleurs diplômé de l'X. Ensemble, ils ont fondé Ipecom, une prépa HEC privée, axée sur la méthodologie, qui compte aujourd'hui 120 participants.

Cette méthodologie, qui fait tant défaut aux élèves, Annie Reithmann a ensuite choisi de la décliner auprès des lycéens. «Aujourd'hui, les élèves confondent “comprendre” et “savoir”, explique cette docteur en philosophie. La répétition est incontournable. Il faut ritualiser l'effort.» Un créneau que l'école publique ne cesse de libérer au fil des années… Après le départ de son associé vers des horizons musicaux, elle lance en 1996 son lycée, avec les filières S, ES et L. Il sera rentable quatre ans plus tard.

En septembre 2017, nouveau cap: Annie Reithmann s'attaque au collège, avec une classe de 4e-3e. Un double niveau s'adressant à des élèves «précoces». Une dizaine d'adolescents se sont inscrits cette année, venus d'établissement publics et privés de l'Est parisien. Parmi eux, des jeunes ayant développé des phobies scolaires ou ayant besoin d'être «cadrés».

Coût de la scolarité: 8900 euros au collège, 8200 à 8500 au lycée, soit à peu de chose près ce qu'un élève coûte à l'État. «Seule la prépa est rentable», explique Annie Reithmann. Cette année, elle a été courtisée par un fonds d'investissement. «J'ai hésité. Je me suis dit que ce serait plus confortable», raconte-t-elle. Elle a finalement refusé, pour ne pas voir défaire cette pédagogie qu'elle a mis plus de 30 ans à construire. «Les fonds d'investissement veulent une rentabilité immédiate», conclut-elle.

● Aldrick Allal, investisseur théâtral

«J'ai un côté théâtral et très égocentrique.»Bavard, dans la démesure, Aldrick Allal, 43 ans, est un «entrepreneur de l'éducation». Il est le repreneur, en mars dernier, de l'internat de prestige Tersac, dans le Lot-et-Garonne. Un vieux rêve réalisé. «Un cadre exceptionnel, le port de l'uniforme, des activités sportives et culturelles en tout genre… En novembre, quand j'ai su qu'il était à vendre, j'ai pris le premier train.» Fils de militaire, Aldrick Allal voulait être professeur. Mais pour ce bachelier scientifique, diplômé en philosophie, l'expérience sera de courte durée. Elle s'achève dans un collège de Montpellier où il enseigne alors, lorsqu'un élève plante un couteau dans la cuisse d'un autre, dans sa classe. Il ne passera pas le Capes. Mais ne lâche pas pour autant le dossier éducation. La pédagogie de ses rêves, «différenciée, déductive, inductive, active», c'est au sein de son propre groupe qu'il la développera. À 25 ans, en 2000, il part à la conquête de l'enseignement supérieur, en lançant à Montpellier le Cours Diderot. En vingt ans, le petit cours est devenu un groupe d'écoles proposant, dans huit villes de France, des BTS, bachelors, masters et préparations aux concours, dans la santé, l'informatique, le management, le tourisme…«J'ai commencé à gagner de l'argent à partir de 2001», raconte-t-il. Avec Tersac, Aldrick Allal bascule dans le monde de l'enseignement secondaire. Un autre univers, dans lequel il prévoit, aussi, de faire les choses en grand. En Anjou, en Normandie et en Provence, il vient de racheter trois châteaux. Et plus récemment, un internat suisse. Son ambition? Développer un réseau, autour de la marque Tersac.
