4.10 Monstrous
YES Kira kicking ass, protecting people, ON HER OWN not just helping a dude I love it MORE OF THIS PLEASE
Not much makes me softer than Mama McCall mom-ing Stiles. My mom’s a nurse and raised me pretty much by herself. She stepped up and mommed the shit out of my best friend when she needed it. TW gets a lot wrong, but I love Melissa so much and I’m happy to see a lot of her this season 💜
DAMN GIRL Kira did some work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I know a lot of folks don’t like Daddy Argent but OOF SIR 🥵
Every time I’m like this is dumb maybe I’ll stop watching, Derek comes on screen for one second and I’m like hmmm no that’s fine I’ll definitely watch infinite episodes of this show. GOOD LORD HE’S SO ATTRACTIVE.
Stiles’ hair in S4 looks like what would happen if I gave my kid some gel and let her loose on his head.
Scott’s claws look like bad acrylics in this shot 🤣
THE FUCK?!

So, because Scott is poor, Derek should buy him a new car? That seems logical to you?

Did you come here looking for a fight? Because you just found one. I believe that this ask refers to this post, where I argued that Derek's performative asceticism isn't accidental, and that the show was implying that his privilege and wealth enabled his antagonistic behavior in the first two seasons.
Nowhere did I argue in that post, where I compared the speed with which Derek repaired his car window after Chris Argent's thug smashed it to the fact that the McCall family vehicle didn't have a driver's side window all season, that Derek owed Scott a car. I have, in the past, argued that the Hales owed Scott McCall reparations for repeated assaults, property damage, disruption of academic pursuits, and for taking over their self-appointed task of protecting Beacon Hills. I wish that the show had made it explicit in A Promise to the Dead (4x11) that Derek gave Scott the money from Garrett's locker rather than leave it ambiguous.
I'm never going to suggest that Teen Wolf went all in on an analysis of class struggle -- Heavens, no! -- but it didn't ignore the consequences of the Hale's upper class identity. "Everyone can be corrupted by money!" Peter howls in Monstrous (4x10) and he is a prime example of that. Similarly, Derek's wealth and privilege enable him to dwell, unhealthily, on the traumas of his past. I know of very few people who could take three months out of their life to obsess over family tragedies with no mention of work or responsibility, and still have cars, properties, and personal care items. Derek is not well served by this behavior, isolating himself from the mundane and from the mechanics of living. He intends to achieve his goals by himself due to trust issues, but he is forced to rely on Scott McCall as the only way to accomplish these things, and man-oh-man is he bitter about it.
But as the show had it's lead protagonist argue in Weaponized (4x07) "while we're trying not to die, we still need to live." In fact, I would argue that you can trace Derek's redemption arc by his willingness to live. At the start of the show, Derek is "totally alone" and his wealth and privilege allow him to operate like that. In Seasons 3 and 4, though, he starts to remember how to live. We see him in an actual home, even though it is the Loft of Solitude. He purchases a more practical vehicle. He allows himself to think about romance. He makes friends with the Sheriff and, amazingly, Chris Argent. A key scene is when he puts his wealth and privilege to positive use by trusting Braeden, hiring her to find Kate. He's using his wealth in a positive manner. It is no longer enabling his isolation. Look at Derek in the movie. He is fully living. He has a home, a family, friends, a business. Before the nogitsune seeks its revenge, Derek's primary focus is watching his son play lacrosse and getting him to embrace his family's heritage.
Since Derek's role was always to serve as a narrative foil to Scott, the lead protagonist, this arc highlights Scott's story. Regardless of what happens to Scott, he never isolates himself, with one important exception. At all other times, he worries about his grades, he wants to get into a good school, he wants to play lacrosse, he wants to date people, he keeps his friends close, he works with Deaton, he brings his mother lunch, etc. Yes, there are terrible things happening, but he doesn't forget to live while trying to stop corrupted hunters, Alpha packs, Japanese fox demons, and multi-million dollar assassin hit-lists. Fandom tends to hold the attention he pays to everyday living against him, but Scott knows from direct experience these things are important, and he doesn't have the wealth and privilege to put them on hold for months while dealing with villains or his own trauma. The exception? Season 5A, where Theo schemes to isolate Scott. Scott is still an alpha, a True Alpha, but that privilege alone won't save anyone. There's a reason that Melissa's primary advice -- as much as I might despise it on an emotional level -- is "You'll get them back. You have to."
Teen Wolf certainly wasn't an "eat the rich" show, but it did have a definite point of view that virtue was based in everyday things, the tasks and opportunity that should be in common with all of humanity, and not in the isolation that great wealth, ancient pedigree, or exclusive privilege grants.

“Because in the darkness, there be dragons. But it isn’t true. We can show them that it isn’t true.”
Medieval cartographers, when they did not know what to put on a map of an unknown or unexplored land, would fill the space in with “Here be Dragons” or some other variant of “here be x monster”. This simple fact imbues so much more meaning into Flint’s speech to Silver in 4x10 and I want to explore that here.
Obviously, we still have the absolutely astounding metaphorical dimension of the sentence “in the darkness, there be dragons”. Dragons are fearsome creatures, powerful and destructive, and yet crucially, they are fictional. They are the monsters in the stories we tell our children.
But now we also have a more literal dimension. Darkness in Flint’s speech is a metaphor, encompassing more than just the physical state of nighttime but rather everything counter to England and civilization’s narratives of how the world should function. Darkness is a thing, a state of being, and a place all in one. Darkness is the sum total of resistance to civilization. And in the darkness, “there be dragons”. Because life outside of civilizations norms and narratives hasn’t been explored! Just as the cartographers write down “here be dragons” as a shorthand of “idk what’s here but it’s probably dangerous”, so too do people write off the “darkness” as unknown and unexplored, and therefore, a danger to them.
Additionally, “there be dragons” anchors the darkness fundamentally and physically in opposition to civilization. It makes sense that a cartographer would be most familiar and make the most detailed renderings of “civilized places, since those are the places extensively surveyed and explored. So those lands on the outskirts that get slapped with a “here be dragons” are outside of civilization and as such, outside of what is known and what is considered necessary to know. That island over there? Well, “there be dragons”, so it’s obvious that that’s nowhere I need to be. It’s full of nasty, monstrous things, so why should we even bother exploring it? It’s a vicious cycle: the place is unexplored, so people assume bad things about it as an explanation for why it’s been unexplored, so since people assume it’s bad it remains unexplored, etc. Therefore, the darkness is these places, both the physical places untouched by civilization as well as the mental spaces that exist outside civilization’s hold and have not been explored precisely because they have not been explored.
In the dark, there is discovery.
Just as those “there be dragons” lands need to be explored and elaborated upon, so too do the places and attitudes and ways of life counter to norms and narratives! Flint is calling for people to fill in these places on their mental maps, which previously only included England and what she deems worth exploring.
Flint and Silver had both likely encountered old maps with “here be dragons” on it and as such may be familiar with the phrase, but the two of them have seen a good deal more of the world than those medieval cartographers and therefore know that the notion of there actually being dragons in those lands is ludicrous. People have seen these previously uncharted lands with their own eyes and know that those maps were lies. Therefore, Flint is beseeching Silver to remember that foolishness, and apply it here with his concept of standing in opposition to England. There are no dragons, and everyone knows it now. All it took was for someone to discover that wasn’t the case. And that is what Flint is asking of Silver here.
If England’s hold on civilization is a map, Flint and the Maroons and all of the people marginalized by that hold are the land of the dragons. Flint knows that the dragons aren’t true, and so he is begging for Silver to help him be the cartographer that erases “here be dragons” from the map at last and fills in what is actually true about what lies beneath the label.

Peter Hale’s age?
One of the inconsistencies in Peter Hale’s age is one I just noticed. But from this source his age would be around 35 or 36 in S4. However, the chart in 4x10 Monstrous lists his age as 38. (I haven’t found a screenshot yet and Netflix won’t let me take one.)
Managed to obtain one!
If we go by the Chart, his DOB would be October 27, 1967. If we go by The In Memoriam video (this was the quickest link I could find, but apparently MTV did one as well.) his DOB would be October 27, 1976. And that would mean he was actually 28 or 29 at the time of the fire.
So which one is it?
I honestly think 38 would have been quite old, judging by the flashback scenes we saw in other episodes. But then again, going by the ages of 28/29, it would mean he was 17/18 when he fathered Malia (which is possible, and I wouldn’t put it past the desert Wolf to go after a young man.) but yeah, these timelines man..
Also, proof that Peter Hale might be one of the strongest werewolves by healing factor alone because YIKES:

More Finale Thoughts
After sleeping on the post I made yesterday, I have more things to say.
While Lucifer may appear physically and metaphysically his most powerful when sending the demons back to Hell---the Devil in his most monstrous form, whose booming words instantly command a host is Peak King Power---I think he is infinitely stronger in the scene with Chloe. The version of Lucifer headed back to Hell is not a tyrant who rules with fist and fang alone; because of what he’s learned on Earth, learned from Chloe, he knows his responsibility now and he is willing to face it without complaint, without seeing it as a punishment. It takes so much strength to say no to something you really want. This moment is the strongest, the most complete, that we have ever seen Lucifer.
This show is so, so, so great at employing parallels, both thematic and otherwise. I have a doozy for you:
4x02/4x10
In the scene where Chloe is holding the axe to Lucifer’s chest, he is also perfectly still, perfectly composed. You know he’s feeling pain; Chloe is cutting into his skin. But he shows none of it. He is being strong because she needs him to be strong; in that moment, too, she is suffering and wrestling with her own demons, her own despair, her own contradicting thoughts and desires.
4x02
Lucifer: Are you okay?
Chloe, placing the axe against his chest: If I pushed this into your chest, it would kill you?
Lucifer: Yes.
Chloe: Because I’m close to you?
Lucifer: Yes.
Chloe: But you jumped in front of it anyway?
Lucifer: Yes. And I would do it again. And again. Don’t you know that, Detective?
Chloe, after realizing she’s wounded him: I’m sorry. Sorry.
It is a ridiculously powerful scene.
In 4x10, Chloe may not be holding an axe, but it’s the same scene. The blocking, even the lighting, is so similar. Lucifer stands vulnerable before her. She is offering him what he truly desires (“I want her to choose me.”). Love. Acceptance. Chloe. Being able to fulfill her desires in a meaningful way---these are Lucifer’s deepest, most long-held desires. More importantly, his own self-loathing had convinced him he could not ever be worthy of them (“You deserve someone worthy of that grace ... Detective, you deserve someone as good as you because well, you're special and I'm--I'm not worth it.”). And here she is, the ultimate temptation, and every plea, every tear has got to cut into his chest far worse than anything the axe did.
Like 4x02, she’s not trying to hurt him.
Like 4x02, he’s jumping in front of the danger anyway. And he would do it again. And again. This is Malcolm’s bullet. This is going back to Hell to get the formula. This is tearing is own body to shreds to protect her from a hail of bullets.
Only worse. Because he has to hurt her--something he has never wanted to do--to do it. To save her. And in hurting her, he is pushing himself onto that axe and he knows it. He’s sacrificing himself so she doesn’t have to make any more sacrifices. He’s doing it not just to protect her, but because he swore, “I hope you know I would do anything to protect that little urchin”---and of course, he knows Trixie is Chloe’s everything. Maybe right now she doesn’t see it, is in too much pain to know what he’s doing and all the reasons why he must do it, but he’s jumping. He has to. To protect everyone he loves, and to protect everything and everyone Chloe loves. He’s hurting her now because she would also get hurt if he stayed, and that hurt would be so, so much worse.
Perhaps most importantly, Lucifer doesn’t make it about him. His eyes shine with tears. His heart breaks. He is obviously in agony. But, just like he remained stoic while Chloe cut him in 4x02, he projects none of that pain onto Chloe in 4x10. Instead, he gives her what he little can (though he wishes he could give her so much more, he wishes he could give her everything), and takes her pain, too.
In becoming himself--angel and devil both, in a kind of balance and harmony that makes the true growth we see in this scene possible at all--Lucifer must not give into the temptation of lying to himself, which has always been so easy. Instead, he must be the kind of man who sacrifices the wants of the very, very few (himself, the woman he loves) to protect the safety of the very, very many (all of Earth--his true home--which he loves with all the depth of devotion we know Lucifer is capable of, because though he may say he doesn’t care we’ve seen that he does. Again. And again. Don’t we know that?).
