Just re-watched that scene in Dark Side of the Moon where Dean comforts Mary after her angry phone call with John and remembered that people in families always play roles even without the trauma or grief of death.

Dean didn't just step up to fill the mother role after Mary died, he was already becoming the mediator and fixer of the family at 4 freaking years old. The one whose job it was to keep the family together and happy. Watching Sam realize that from an adult perspective is powerful and why I love the family work done in season 5.

every once in a while i remember that scene from dark side of the moon where theyre going through sam's favorite memories and they end up on the empty street where john disowned him. and dean just looks SO betrayed and says that it was one of the worst nights of his life

and i lose my fucking mind about it because this is literally after john made the crossroad deal to save his life, and sam's died in front of him, and he's sold his soul and gotten ripped apart by the hellhounds. like so much has happened to dean and this is STILL one of the worst nights of his life. he still recognizes the street where sam left because after that he was all alone

i think if sam was the older one it wouldn't really change the dynamic between them because obviously.. even in the show he sometimes acted like he's the older brother. but consider this; dean instinctively standing behind sam when he's hurt or threatened, dean's not signing anything until i read the fine print, or dean close your eyes, OR!! sam i lost my shoe :(

sam's panicked, guilty look when he realizes in heaven that they're on the side if the road where he left his family (it's a complicated happy memory) and how desperately he tries to get dean to leave before he realizes it too (because sam knows this is going to hurt dean) haunts me.

it was one of the most important things he'd ever done (got away from the life he didn't want and now he's free) and it was one of the worst things he'd ever done (left dean with an angry dad and caused damage to their sibling relationship that can never be fully repaired).

Supernatural Headcanon: Sam and Dean have scars from all their deaths

Sam:

• Scar on his lower spine from his first death. Is the one Dean hates the most because he feels guilty for not being there in time.

• Lightning like scars around his legs, arms and near his heart from the wish that killed him (from Wishful Thinking 4x8)

• Pulse like or sound wave like around his chest from when Pamela took his and Dean’s Soul/killed them

• Stab wound in his lower abdomen from when Anna stabbed him (5x13)

• Gunshot wound in the center of his chest from when Walt and Roy killed them

• Dark marks around his heart from when he jumped in the cage. (Adam had this as well)

• x2 pulse/sound waves around heart when Billie killed them in 12x9

• Bite mark in neck from 13x21

Dean:

(I din’t add Mystery Spot because it was a time loop, so his deaths technically never happened)

• Claw marks (especially around his chest) from hellhounds (this are the ones Sam’s hates the most)

Ep 3, finally found the time! Let's goooo!

Eyyy, Deanna Campbell mention, the only one in the whole series and all that we got is that Mary has only heard that her mom was somewhere hunting with a group, and this only several months ago and that Samuel and Deanna are separated. So no matter what version of these 2 fam we got,there's always 1 parent that's completely gone (henry and mary dead, deanna completely cut contact) and 1 parent missing in a sense (samuel and john missing, millie emotionally distant). Which explains a lot about the choices that each John and Mary end up making in SPN. 1st the fact thag Samuel and Deanna are separated here immediately makes me think of Dark Side of the Moon where John and Mary are separated instantly. And it won't be the last time we hear this cuz Millie and Henry were also separated but I'll mention it then. What is interesting is that with Mary and John, Mary is the one that stays in the house with the kids, likely trying not to repeat her mom's actions and John leaves, but clearly doesn't disappear from picture cuz the phone call in DSotM clearly shows he wanted to still be there, likely so that he isnt his own father who left and never returned. But both John and Mary def internalized the emotional distance of Samuel and Millie, very fittingly having John unknowingly copy Samuel and Mary doing the same with Millie. And all of this is contrasted and compared to Carrie and Ford's parents, their dad dead and their mom a long haul trucker. But unlike the Winchester-Campbell's the mom is still trying to be there emotionally for them.
