Ironclads - UKGE2017 - It IS Rocket Science
Triple Ace Games have a decade long and well established history of producing high quality RPGs, card and board games. One world they have lovingly crafted over the years is the steampunk inspired League of Adventures series which includes the eponymous RPG and the card game Rocket Race. However, one thing that has never figured in their portfolio is minis or minis driven games.
Until now, and at the same time, not even now. Because for their new space battles minis game Ironclads, TAG will not be producing a single retail mini. Or flight stand, token, measuring stick or stat card - because Ironclads will be a completely 3D printable space battle game with some of the most charming ship designs I’ve seen in a long time.

Set in the League of Adventures universe, Ironclads takes some of the marvellous rocket creations of Rocket Race and pits them against each other in a simple, elegant space skirmish game. We sat down for a demo early Saturday morning and just wanted to keep playing as Ironclads’ mechanics are very quick to learn and keep the action moving very quickly indeed. By the time you have figured out your next move, it’s your turn again, even in a 3 player game.

Movement is achieved by placing octagonal markers in front of your flight base. My ship had 3 movement and 2 manoeuvre based on its card stats, which meant I could place 3 hexes down and change direction twice, or change orientation on the spot for 1 manoeuvre point. Ships get 2 actions; Move and Fire; Fire and Move; Move and Move; or just Fire or Just Move. They cannot Fire and Fire. If a ship flies out of the play area, it is destroyed in the void of space! Simple. Combat is incredibly simple. Each magnet attachable weapon on the ship has an arc of fire and stats for Close, Short, Medium and Long Range (decided by simple rulers). This dictates the number of D6′s thrown and 4, 5 and 6 are hits. 6′s are critical indefensible hits and always cause 1 damage. Each ship has a defence gadget which uses the same mechanism. 4,5 and 6 cancel hits except attack 6′s. Damage is tracked with cute little spanners and each ship in the demo could take 6 damage. The weapons will vary between efficacy at short or long range. My Tesla Cannon was best at long range and yielded 4D6 offensively. Dave’s chainsaw was obviously better as melee and yielded its 4D6 at Close range.
There is a more complex system planned for the full game which uses command tokens to provide more strategic play with larger fleets but this was not ready for the demo and we didn’t miss it. Objects in space also cause damage if hit and that includes destroyed ships! Some weapons also gratifyingly obey Newton’s laws and have recoil, resulting in movement in the opposite direction which can butt you into the nearest asteroid faster than you can say “I’m telling you kid, it’s been blown clean away”

The game is incredibly elegant and streamlined even at this stage. It has been playtesting extensively so far but there is still more to come before the KickStarter release later in the year. I am delighted to report that due to our enthusiasm for the game (we had written an entire back story during the demo of The Clangers Go To War against the evil Button Moon overlords) TAG are going to send our group a set of the minis and components to continue playtesting and I will keep reporting on progress as we go. And if that was just it, then I think TAG would have a great game on their hands. However, it’s the fact that the whole game is going to be released as a series of downloadable 3D and 2D print files that makes this project very interesting indeed. There have been 3D game printable KickStarters before, however, they have focused on fixed components like minis or terrain etc. TAG intends the printable components to be modular meaning that (much like in the Rocket Race game) the ships will be anything you want them to be! Every weapon will be able to be magnetised for quick load in/out and the ships themselves will be multi-part prints so that engines and hulls can be customised as well.

It is proposed that for those (like me at the moment, hint) without a 3D printer, only a small number of components would need to be printed by something like an amenable friend, hackspace or online printing service to be able to construct a reasonable sized fleet with differing weaponry and defences. We had immense fun playing our demo of Ironclads and Triple Ace deserve to do really well with it. It’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and very slick. If you have a limited playtime, you could finish a 6ship, 3-player game in about 45mins, but with only 2 players and 4 ships, maybe 15-20mins which makes it the ideal lunchtime game. We play a lot of that ‘other’ space game (as tokens engravers put it) and though it scratches a LOT of itches (especially as I am a massive fan of the films and was 10 in 1977), Ironclads has a delicious purity and simplicity that is very attractive and will appeal to a lot of casual as well as more hardcore miniatures and wargame players. If you print it, they will come. Happy gaming y’all.
