Call Me Josh Chapter 26
“We can’t just kill him.” One of the Rabbis calls out. “There are laws.”
“Our laws allow it. He is claiming to be the Messiah. That is blasphemy.” Rabbi Leary replies. “He should be stoned.”
Rabbi Nicklaus winces. “Are any of us fit to judge him? Any of us without sin?” He asks. Stern eyes turn to him.
“We are the defenders of the faith. That makes us fit to judge him.” Rabbi Leary replies. “If you lack the courage to be a part of this, then away with you. We shall make sure our religion isn’t perverted by this rabble-rouser.”
He does leave. No, he will not be a part of the murder of an innocent man. He needs to warn him, in fact. Making up his mind, he sets off to find him.
He is teaching again. With hundreds gathered around him, he talks to them about how to be a good neighbor. “There was a man, beating up by a mob, and left for dead in an alley. Now, there was a man, a community leader, taken a short cut down that alley. He sees him but quickly walks on the other side, not willing to get involved.
Next comes a Rabbi, one high up in the faith, a leader of his faith community. He also sees the unfortunate man laying there. As the business man before him, he also walks on the other side. He turns his head, pretending not to see.
Next comes a homeless man. He has nothing but a good and compassionate heart. He hurries over to him, bandaging his wounds with pieces of his own clothes. He then lifts him up and carries him to the hospital. There, he stays and waits to see if he will be alright.
Now, my friends, who was a neighbor to the beaten man?”
“The homeless man.” Echoes back.
“Yes,” His face is shining with joy. “Now you, you go and to likewise. For it is easy, isn’t it, to be nice to your family and friends. To help them when you have enough to comfortably share. But, when you have nothing, and someone you don’t know needs help, that is when God sees whether you are a true mitzvah, whether you are truly compassionate.
There was a little old lady, a widow. She entered the Temple to make her tithes. The others make huge shows of their offerings. But she, she places two pennies in the offering box. They barely make a sound amidst the clamor of the others offerings. God hears though. He hears the tinkle of those pennies above the rest for, the others gave out of their riches. She gave out of her poverty.
You do the same. When someone asks you for something, give without counting the cost. For your reward will be in heaven. When someone asks you to walk a mile with them, walk two. Give more then asks, for your Father in heaven sees and will reward you.”
“Rabbi,” a man stands up in the crowd, “I wish to know how to enter your kingdom.”
Joshua knows he is rich. He knows he won’t like his answer. “You know the commandments, Love God, Love others, Honor your father and mother?”
“Yes Rabbi, I have kept them all since childhood.”
“Very good. Only one thing you lack. Sell off everything you own, give the money to help the poor, and follow me.”
The man looked at him and then turned away. He walks away from the others as Joshua’s compassionate eyes follow him. With a sigh, he tells his followers and his audience, “It is easier to pass a camel through a needle’s eye then for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
His disciples are aghast. Peter asks, “Then how are any to be saved?”
He smiles at him. “It isn’t possible not by men’s will or strength but, all things are possible with God.”
Rabbi Nicklaus walks up to him after the meeting breaks up. “I need to talk to you about something important.”
“Shalom Rabbi Nicklaus. Of course. What is on your mind?” He looks around at his followers. Joshua smiles. “You may speak freely in front of them.”
“Alright. Rabbi Leary wants to have you killed.” His disciples stir, starting to angrily respond. Joshua holds up his hands, stilling them.
“We shall hear all he has to say. Go on.”
“They accuse you of blasphemy and wish to stone you.”
“Are any of them without sin!” Peter exclaims.
“Be still Peter. This is my Father’s will.”
“To die! No. I will not allow it!”
Joshua sighs. “Get behind me Satan for His will, will be done.” Peter tears up and Joshua touches his arm. “I know this is hard. But this is why I came. For the blood of animals, the following of the law, as much as people try to do it perfectly, it can’t redeem. I was send to seek and save those that are lost. “
“By dying for them?” Rabbi Nicklaus asks.
He smiles sadly at him. “Yes. You are a good man and close to the truth. Thank you for coming and warning me.”
