I was tagged by @georgeromeros (thank you!) to post   ✨ 9 favorite films that I watched (for the first time) in 2022 ✨
I didn’t watch a lot of movies last year, if I count out re-watches of movies I already liked. However, when I did watch new (for me) movies I came across some pretty good ones, at least in my opinion. No surprise in seeing it’s all horror in a way or the other.
I’m tagging anyone that sees this and wants to do this! It’s fun

54 BLs Announced for 2023 that didn't happen
Here if you list of BLs announced for 2023 that didn't happen and for which I have no word on whether they'll release in 2024 instead.
I've put the ones I really regret didn't get made in bold.
If they actually happened and I just missed it please let me know in a comment with the place you watched it. Thanks!
Organized by country!
Cambodia

My Croissant
trailer - announced 4/2023
China
Couple or Not
From Durian Culture Production this was suposed to be an A/B/O. Gui Ming who swaps consciousness with himself in a parallel universe. In that universe he is married to his rival Shi Youtian.
Desire the series
Another one that was supposed to be A/B/O The story of Bai Lan, a young man who wants Mr. Shen, a proud alpha, to be his omega. According to the casting announcement ‘Desire’ will consist of 24 episodes with 45 minutes runtime per episode.
Japan
Boys Love Omegaverse (Boys Love Sequel)
Announced for 6/9/2023 but never aired. This seems to just be borrowing the branding and have nothing to do with either BL originals since it's about 4 men in an idol group.
Given the series (remake)
Fuji TV announced and episodic series focuses on Ritsuka as he rediscovers his love for music thanks to Mafuyu. Given the Movie focused on their bandmates, Akihiko-Haruki, and their tumultuous relationship. The storyline for this second film involves Ritsuka temporarily joining Hiiragi and Shizusumi’s band, and the tension that brings to his new relationship with Mafuyu. It will also delve into the relationship between Hiiragi and Shizusumi.
Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa
remake of the first movie
Korea
Blueming 2 AKA Blueming Season 2
This was one of my favorites from 2022 year (9/10). I’m not thrilled about this. It’s the same director as TMS2, and I didn’t like that one all that much either. Still, I’m always intersted in where Korea goes when it’s given enough rope to hang itself.
Choco Milk Shake 2
Strongberry
First Love's User Manual (TutorYim) Silkwood (Peach Of Time)
Heesu In Class 2
was to air 2023 03.02
Korea's gay version of Sex Education. Heesu’s world revolves around Chanyoung, his best friend and secret crush. He doesn’t mind cheering Chanyoung from the sidelines or listening to all his girl problems. He doesn’t care if people only know him as “Chanyoung’s friend.” Then one day, Heesu starts hearing his name everywhere. On the bus, in the halls, during lunch… Turns out, there’s a rumor going around school (Got a love problem? Find Heesu in Class 2 and he’ll tell you what to do!) and with that, Heesu suddenly finds himself the center of attention. But how could he give anyone advice? He doesn’t even know what to do about his own crush!
youtube
Jump the series
From SOL Entertainment (producers of Cherry Blossoms and others) for Gaga. Coming-of-age drama that 'jumps' to the next chapters of life: love, friendship, competition, mistakes, dreams and hopes.
Love Supremacy Zone
Best on a novel and 29 year old man wakes up in a 19 year old's body and has to make his friend happy or die
youtube
Wuju Bakery AKA Space Bakery (JeffBarcode)
Silkwood and Be On Cloud partnered for this. ‘Wuju Bakery’ was originally scheduled to be released in 2024, but changes in the production house’ schedule showed that it would air sooner in November 2023, and then it didn't. The drama stars Thai actors Jeff Satur and Barcode Tinnasit and Korean actors Dion and Jun In-Kyu (Q) About a spaceship that crash-lands into and destroys a bakery shop. Of course this means the alien and the baker end up living together. At the same time, other aliens-in-hiding all around the city start hunting for them. One of my most anticipated BLs. It sounds SO WEIRD.
Taiwan
First Note Of Love
Was casting 5/2023. About a singer with stage fright and his timid fan
Pray in Love
From SoulChill (the producers of Innocent) the illegitimate son of a mafia family and his policeman boyfriend who's lives get upended when one has an arranged marriage and the other a promotion.
The Only One
Based on a novel Mou Mou from the Your Name Engraved Herein folks, high school set stepbrothers trope!
Wishing Upon The Shooting Stars
Reunion country set romances from director Ryan Jiang: My Tooth Your Love, and WBL.
Thailand
2 Worlds (MaxNat)
Domundi announced parallel worlds love triangle story with MaxNat as the leads (finally!) PuPa & Kram are in love but PuPa is murdered and Kram is pulled into a parallel world. In that place, 12 years ago, Kram & Tai were in love but Kram was killed by Tai's dad. Now Tai encounters the Kram from another world, what will happen next? Is this a second chance or is Kram sill morning his dead lover, and does Tai need to help him get home or convince him to stay?
4 Minutes (BibleBuild)
Be On Cloud announced original story written by Sammon (Manner of Death/Triage) especially for them… described as a ‘bitter’ drama. When asked if there are many love scenes, Bible said yes! It was planned for the 4th quarter of 2023. Didn't happen.
7 Times 4 Days
Arton A Bangkoks The story of ‘Won’ a 27-year-old Korean teacher who travels to Thailand on an exchange program. Stays with his mother’s friend who has an 18 year old high schoolson. They get closer.
Acadex
Star Hunter announced this may bot be bl? The Eclipse + Destiny Seeker + Harry Potter 4 + The CW.

Deep Night
MCOTHD30 was casting this 4/2023
youtube
Flirt Milk
Star Hunter announced this Y-novel adaptation standard pop fodder, but they are cute. One boy accuses another of breaking up his relationship to pursue his gf, but it's not the gf the boy was into.
Friend. Boyfriend
The series depicts Aum and Nack who are best friends and co-workers at a bar. Their personalities are very different, one is quiet and caring, the other is a laid back playboy. Mew is a newly recruited staff member at the bar, he is good looking, talkative and it doesn’t take long for him to grab the attention of Nack. This creates tensions at the workplace as Aum realizes he has more than platonic feelings for Nack, forcing Nack to choose between the two.
Future From Me
Was casting 5/2023 One boy secretly in love with another since middle school.
youtube
Heart by Heart
Half Toast Production adaptation of the y-novel of the same name, the trailers are GOOD. I’m more excited for this one then I thought I'd be. Has a bit of Tasty Florida, bad boy/good boy, high drama going on.

youtube
Love Puzzle AKA Plengrak AKA Pleng Prai Love Puzzle
From KOB Entertainment set in the same universe as Chains of Heart (SIGH). BUT Noh Phouluang is in this so you know I will watch it but it looks like it'll be a hot MESS. A new exchange student has a one night stand on the night of his arrival, turns out the boy is a senior in his new uni department.
Love Syndrome – The Beginning prequel
Tells how the couples from Love Syndrome met originally.
Mystique in the Mirror
Side couple is PitchBank from Golden Blood, authored by Dr. Dr.Patrick Rangsimat (My Ride) interview here.
Nilundon
Announced for 12.29.2023 didn't air. Postponed from 2021 to recast one of the leads, never a good sign.
youtube
Punk Spy
Domundi trying out Tommy (formerly JimmyTommy) to star opposite Thomas Teetut (new talent). OMG are we gona call them TomTom? Please people. Please? Small town romance of two people who keep secrets. And they are searching for the truth. Poppy (everyone’s favorite comedic character actor) is in this one too.
Rule No.1: Don't Be too Emotional
Oxin brings us a Korean novel (by Hwang Seol!) adaptation, freshman realized his senior is hiding dark secrets. Was casting 4/2023
Sunset Vibes
Star Hunter reusing the Big Dragon pair as a one night stand but uh-oh he’s my boss, adapted from a web series! I’m game. Trailer here.
The Chinese Family (working title)
GDH to star Billkin of ITSAY
The D Project (working title)
GDH to star PP Krit of ITSAY
The Internship
This Wayufilm short film was set to premiere in June 2023 on their YouTube Channel. The storyline follows an intern who encounters a ghost at his workplace.
The Outing Series (Max Nattapol & TopTap)
BL sub plot within a story of 3 families that manage a top advertising agency. Anan, Phupha & Taurus take their families & close employees for an annual outing at a resort. There, the dark secrets of 22 people with different views on love and relationships are revealed.
True Moon
Star Hunter to do yet another loosely disguised attempt at the 2 Moon franchise? Trailer here.
Two Worlds (MaxNat)
Lakorn style, Phupha and Khram love each other but later Phupha is murdered. However, something happens and Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, 12 years ago, Khram and Thai were in love. However, Khram was killed by Thai’s dad.
Waterboyy 3 AKA Waterboys (KaownahTurbo)
not a remake. Why do they not cast Est Supha in one of these? That's the real quetion. Ram, a young fisherman from the country after he gets accepted into the most prestigious swimming academy in the country. Ram has a hard time fitting in with the high society students that populate the school because he didn’t grow up in a life of privilege. Luckily he has Q to protect him during these trying times.
Wish Me Luck
Be Brave Entertainment Hub to produce this BL about a boss and his temporary employee in an advertising company, based on Bittersweet's y-novel of the same name สุดที่รักษ์. Starring my boy Fiat (Grean Fictions, SOTUS S, My Gear and Your Gown, Triage) who I’ve been waiting to lead a BL for a decade (it feels like) and Na Naphat (KinnPorsche, UWMA). Trailer here.
Wish You Luck
StudioCommuan Sci Fi dystopian BL about a luck-stealer and an optimistic innocent. Trailer here.
Y-Moment
Mflow consortium piece of some kind.

Okay that's it. I won't be updating this I don't think, so make sure to comment with any corrections.

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.
A few stats:
110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)
clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only
from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])
~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand
~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].
[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]
This doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows [e.g. I re-watched Love Sick, My Ride the Series, Semantic Error, ITSAY/IPYTM, Our Dating Sim at least 3 times lol, and anything with a s2 I re-watched s1 to prep, among others, watched Fujoshi Ukkari Gei no Kokuru (2019) for the first time] or non-QL [e.g. Heartstopper s2, Our Flag Means Death s2, Taskmaster s. 15 & 16, Uncanny Counter s2, One Piece s1, etc.] but does include films as well as shows, though I don't count special episodes separately (so Wedding Plan counts once, though I watched both the show and the special).
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 20 Shows I'd Recommend From This Year:
Moonlight Chicken
Our Dating Sim
Bed Friend
The Eighth Sense
La Pluie
Sing My Crush
Tokyo in April Is...
Wedding Plan
Laws of Attraction
I Cannot Reach You
I Feel You Linger in the Air
What Did You Eat Yesterday S2
I Became the Lead in a BL Drama
If It's With You
Love in Translation
Our Dining Table
My Personal Weatherman
My Beautiful Man: Eternal
My School President
Be My Favorite
+10 I liked but I would only recommend with caveats:
Love Class 2
The New Employee [for the Rainbow Rice Cakes]
Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru
Never Let Me Go
Kiseki: Dear to Me
Unintentional Love Story
The Day I Loved You
End of the World with You
A Breeze of Love
Jack O'Frost
Bonus: Not a BL but worth calling out:
One Room Angel
Midnight Museum
Grand Guignol
The Warp Effect
Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.
The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.
It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!
Full list under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it aired but may be slightly off].

Good Stuff: Best Movies of 2023
Tumblr media
This was NOT a great year for blockbusters, huh? This was probably Disney's worst in years, multiple flops including what was meant to be their centennial anniversary film. It looked remarkably by the numbers, but think of the conglomerate's losses... Anyway, this to me was a pretty great year for films. Like 2022, I'm amazed at the variety we got that says more about the shifting tides of people's interest in movies. It was the most times I've been to the theater. We got a big worker's strike over the summer, especially large push back against degenerates trying to push AI to do more than just shitposting. And it was enough for me to know Adam Sandler, Godzilla, and Hayao Miyazaki could get the better of Disney. With this said, let this be a first for Good Stuff and count down my favorites of this year.
12. Renfield
Tumblr media
My suspicions were on the money and I'm glad I gave this a shot in the theaters. Cage was the best Dracula I could've asked for in what you might say was an Adult Swim-esque dark comedy. It definitely has that style of gruesomeness and humor given Robert Kirkman and the Writer/Director behind Moral Orel made this. Unfortunately, Ben Schwartz stuck out like a sore thumb even if he fulfills his purpose in this, reminding me of Christopher Mintz-Plasse in KickAss; I feel he or Jason Schwartzman would've been better suited. Plus it can feel all over the place, an identity crisis that you can't even grasp after it finishes. Then again, I just had fun watching and would gladly rewatch for Cage and Hoult who are the highlights of this.
11. Migration
Tumblr media
Call it blasphemous, but I enjoyed this more than the Mario movie. It's essentially Rio mixed with National Lampoon's Vacation, with a lovable cast, solid animation, and an eazy breezy road trip story. I've always looked to Illumination for simple enjoyable romps and I got what I expected here. Gave me Amphibia vibes in a way, replace frogs with birds. Everything surrounding the villain is my only real issue, he was an obvious and very nothing bad guy, but it's overall better paced than Super Mario Bros where it felt like you watched an eternity in 3 minutes. Still don't get the air of folk looking down on this for just being serviceable when it's honestly become my favorite Illumination movie next to the first Despicable Me.
10. Killers of the Flower Moon
Tumblr media
Sad to say this is the weakest Scorsese movie for me, mainly because it felt like we're following the wrong main character. Lily Gladstone is incredible in this, among the other great performers, but she felt sidelined in favor of DeCaprio and De Niro's perspectives. It's like if in 1995's Casino, we just follow Ginger throughout the moment Sam introduces her. I liked the turmoil Leo's character goes through, but it paled in comparison to Mollie who was more affected by his and Hale's actions. That does not mean it's all bad. This can be a beautiful, dynamic, and ruthless movie that just made me feel bad for watching it; running with the words "harsh reality" throughout the 3 and a half hour runtime.
9. Good Burger 2
Tumblr media
I watched Good Burger 1 & 2 this Thanksgiving weekend, and just had a blast. These are the kind of movies that are charmingly stupid but not insultingly so. Kel Mitchell's Ed is emblematic of how much dumb fun this duology is where he's actively comical but not smoothbrained to ruin your time. This I say is like Home Alone 2 where it is just beat for beat the 1st movie with minor developments but that doesn't really matter when it's just as well put together. It never feels like Kenan nor Kel missed a beat and the drama not overstaying its welcome. It is just "Good Burger Again" without it feeling like diminishing returns compared to other rehashing sequels.
8. Leo
Tumblr media
Can you believe this got better publicity than Disney's Wish? Even YMS could appreciate this movie, that's how you know Sandler has his recognizable game when you least expect it. But Leo is a surprisingly good comedy that has actually sincere moments. Being Happy Madison's 2nd ever animation, it's like Adam waited to refine the production as opposed to putting a cash grab together like one would expect. It's not all good, especially trying to be a musical, but seeing it once you'd be impressed how much good it does with the risks it takes.
7. Nimona
Tumblr media
Like Migration, everything surrounding the villain is the one big issue I have with this, especially when it comes to affecting the film's message. At the same time, she pales in comparison to the dynamic pairing of Ballister Blackheart and the titular shapeshifter. Nimona is my favorite character of 2023, her energy and confidence matched by the struggle she bears existing alone and the facade made to band-aid it. Her and Ballister's journey alone made me glad this got out of development hell, being Blue Sky's final production posthumous. To me it wasn't about being a take that to Disney, it was about the fact a movie like Nimona got to exist as great as it did. Hoping Stevenson is satisfied with their adaptation, because it definitely earned its flowers.
6. Emesis Blue
Tumblr media
Offhand, it openly sucks that Letterboxd refuses to let this stay on the site to log, but it can't be overstated how much of a marvel this was. Repurposing not just the characters, but the lore and mechanics of Team Fortress 2 into a feature length horror thriller. The animation's top notch where it can have godly framing that was on par with the known legends of horror film making. SFM animations can be beautiful on their own, shitpost or otherwise, but Emesis Blue goes a step beyond by having a compelling story fitting for the universe on top of, again, every frame being a painting.
5. Shin Kamen Rider
Tumblr media
I've never really saw any Tokusatsu shows. Not that I hate the genre, just could never get into it while recognizing the glorious looking chaos found in clips. Knowing Hideaki Anno directed was what got me into seeing this film and it opened my mind quite a bit. This was the legacy film that definitely had Anno's touch in both the action and drama. While the climax can notably drag, you never feel left out of what was essentially the original Kamen Rider's origin story. It doesn't have the complex VFX of stuff like Marvel, but the costumes and fight scenes makes me wish we got more of this in America beyond Power Rangers.
4. TMNT Mutant Mayhem
Tumblr media
Advertising before release really didn't make this appear like a promising film. If there's anything I learned from this year though, appearances can be deceiving. Like Nimona was for her movie, the creative choices for this made it the TMNT movie I never knew I wanted. To me this felt akin to the Lego Batman movie where it's not only a good love letter of the franchise for more than its fanservice, but this spin on the characters is able to have a new sincere view of them without overhauling everything about the TMNT. That and it has the greatest needle drops I've had in a long while like how do insert He-Man Fabulous Secret Powers and expect me to hate this?
3. Godzilla Minus One
Tumblr media
I call this a great year for films because it marks the first time I got to see a Toho produced Godzilla, with subtitles, in an real movie theater. Needless to say, it felt like I got to enjoy the 1954 film again anew. Not a remake mind you, but the parallels were uncanny and this spins here work just as well, if not more here than with the original in a couple places. Both are still strong movies nonetheless. Minus One is a refurbish that dishes out what people always wanted and uniquely giving a little more while never sacrificing why the OG is that timeless. With it getting more than a limited release, I'm glad this got to be more than a niche celebration of the kaijuu king.
2. Oppenheimer
Tumblr media
This film's been meme'd to heaven, hell you could say it got meme'd to success thanks to its dual release with Barbie, but it didn't undermine getting hooked to watching this anyways. This really has become my favorite Nolan film, a compelling biopic that doesn't exactly herald its titular lead in the best light thanks to the paradoxical storytelling. Oppenheimer gives us the largest ensemble I know, and delivers in the most breathtaking moments I never knew I could get. Cillian killed it among the many who made the three hours of people sitting and talking in rooms actually tense and intriguing to thread. Plus it gave us the beauty of Josh Peck being the guy to detonate the test bomb like cherry on top of this cinematic cake.
1. The Holdovers
Tumblr media
I remember watching Alexander Payne's Sideways with Paul Giamatti as a high schooler but couldn't appreciate it until rewatching this year. It's one of the best mid-life crisis comedies you could see, still fresh in its easy going presentation and music. The same can be said for this film, made to feel like it came from the late 70s or 80s with the old opening logos that I didn't think you could do in these times. Out the gate, this was the holiday story I was shocked would be as relatable as it was, with the trio of Giamatti, Randolph, and Sessa each having their story that resonated with me strongly. With the right amount of time, Payne offers an remarkably cozy, down to earth movie where from reserved to outgoing, it did a lot for me emotionally. Like Netflix's Klaus, I kinda want this to be a traditional rewatch for the holiday seasons. One that everyone should try at least once, especially if they feel the disillusionment of the season where this might lift their spirits one way or another.
If there's anything to learn from this year, it's that the meta has definitely shifted. Even when the many on my list didn't make billions like the Avatar films, the variety and risks made spoke more than the big dogs like Disney and WB putting out unprofitable blockbusters that ranged from very by the numbers to you don't need to see The Flash to know how god awful it just was. More people are & should branch out beyond the major mainstream names. Not that the big dogs aren't ever gonna make great films in the coming years, but we should appreciate more than the big budget features you can tell are playing it safe. Time can be patient for great cinema, sleeper hits or not, so take advantage while you're young.

My goal for the year was to watch & log 100 movies. Shorts count, didn't matter whether I had seen them before, but they can only count once for the year. I logged 117!
First & last watched: Ken Russell's Women in Love (1969)--the reason I cared about movies so much this year, just an obvious life-changer for me--and Ken Russell's The Rainbow (1989)--Westlin's suggestion for the perfect round out. Surprised to be surprised by how good it was. Great films! Totally on the program! Questions to this day unanswered! Let's go!
Shorts (everything short of Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story) watched: 16
Favorite shorts: Nuit et Brouillard (Alain Resnais, 1956) (decided this year one of my all-time favorite films); Un Chant d'Amour (Jean Genet, 1950); Fireworks (Kenneth Anger, 1947)
Next year my shorts watching will be more programmatic
Films I watched twice in 2023: Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (Todd Haynes, 1987) (another film I realized this year obviously belongs in my top ten--more specifically I decided finally that this is my favorite non-Texas Chain Saw film); Beau is Afraid (Ari Aster, 2023); The Nightmare Before Christmas (Henry Selick, 1993)
By decade: Before 1900: 0 1900 - 1910: 1 1910 - 1919: 1 1920 - 1929: 1 bro come ON what the FUCK 1930 - 1939: 1 im literally evil 1940 - 1949: 7 1950 - 1959: 3 1960 - 1969: 24 1970 - 1979: 14 1980 - 1989: 16 1990 - 1999: 17 2000 - 2009: 13 2010 - 2019: 9 2020 - 2023: 10
By nation/language roughly: uk/english: 6 us/english: 66 canada/english: 6 france/french: 10 italy/italian: 4 italy/france/french: 1 italy/english: 1 czechoslovakia/czech: 5 palestine/arabic: 3 soviet/russian: 2 russia/russian: 1 austria/german: 1 austria/french: 1 spain/spanish: 1 japan/japanese: 1 poland/yiddish: 1 poland/polish: 1 senegal/wolof: 1 brazil/portuguese: 1 sweden/swedish: 1 eur/farsi: 1 south africa/afrikaans: 1
numbers not adding up there but w/e
By director: Not sure if this is surprising or totally unsurprising, but in spite of my auteurial talk (and all the thematic/completionist plans I like to make), I very rarely watched more than two movies by the same director. I can't decide how I feel about this, nor do I know how to proceed this year given that my goal is to discover who my top five directors might actually be. How do you go about investigating that?
Overwhelmingly the director I watched the most was Adrian Lyne, with five films. I have a few more things to work on but I'm close to done with my shakedown/theory. Neither my favorite director nor favorite guy, I would say I probably 'enjoy' and 'personally get more out of watching' his films more than most. In second place, I watched three Kenneth Anger films--all shorts of course. I watched two films each by the following directors: Ken Russell, David Cronenberg, Stanley Kubrick, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Paul Schrader, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ti West, Todd Haynes, Michael Haneke, Jan Švankmajer (both shorts), and Billy Wilder (one of which being a war department documentary short).
I have mixed feelings about this approach (let me watch man movies if i I want to!) but a quick skim suggests I watched about 15 films directed by women (12%)--lower than expected and probably low for me typically. I always have a romance habit on the backburner so it's never hard for me to watch a lot of movies by women, but obviously my focus on revered directors I never previously wanted to spend time on has had an impact here, meaning I should make an effort with Great women directors in 2024 to keep that in check. I will also say that I specifically recall having a hard time getting my hands on things I wanted to watch by women in a few different cases, including by Great women directors (Barbara Hammer and Akerman), and especially also soviet women directors. There's an overlap here with difficulty accessing short films!
I'm not an active or thoughtful starrer, but these are the films I watched in 2023 that I've given five stars to:
Women in Love (Ken Russell, 1969) (upgraded from four after the year of appreciating it) Mandabi (Ousmane Sembène, 1968) Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996) Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (Todd Haynes, 1987) The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) Night and Fog (Alain Resnais, 1956) Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1975) (demoted Teorema [1968] to four stars to prevent Salo is A Perfect Film deflation) Un Chant d'Amour (Jean Genet, 1950)
Least favorite films watched in 2023: Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2019), Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023), All My Good Countrymen (Vojtěch Jasný, 1968), Zahrada (Jan Švankmajer, 1968), the one streaming true crime doc I watched that I then had to log (will not repeat in 2024)
Loved/treats for me: Barry Lyndon, Crossing Delancey, Unfaithful, The Cremator, The Night Porter, Cabaret, talking to people about Funny Games and realizing I love it more than I think I do
Recommended for the romance girls as a thank you for the good romance you have recommended me: Habibi (Susan Youssef, 2011)
Most incredible movie experience of the year by miles and I can only hope 2024 has something this good to offer: House of 1000 Corpses (Rob Zombie, 2003) anniversary screening my birthweek
The otherwise defining film of 2023 for me: Hostel (Eli Roth, 2005)
Onward! Back to work! On the Terror and Violence line! The Family is out there, comfortable, in relative peace…

Fabio Quartararo - B3tter podcast
Fabio did a podcast with some of his friends. Seemed like it was filmed the first week of March. I took a couple of notes that you'll find below.
He was in Mykonos on the 14th of July (2022) when he was named “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” (an honorific title that’s given to people in France), he says that it was an additional reason to party.
He explains that he speaks so well Spanish because he lived in Spain when he was young and he’s been living in Andorra for over 5 years.
His parents sacrificed a lot between his 8 and 13 years old (because they didn’t necessarily have a lot of money) and after that, a year of competition cost about 150 000 euros but he was lucky to have a team supporting him (without this support, he would have had to stay home).
His dad put him on a bike when he was 3 and Fabio already knew he wanted to be a MotoGP rider. When he was 6-7, he already had the dream of being a World Champion.
When he was 8 years old, his dad bought him a replica helmet from a Mundial rider and the helmet had a devil drawn on it. Fabio explains that all the kids were calling him “El Diablo, El Diablo” and it stayed. He says that he likes the fact that it can have different meanings. El Diablo is especially when he’s on his bike (when he puts on his helmet). Outside of it, he’s more of an angel (“mas o menos”).
Before every race but especially the ones outside of Europe, he eats a B3tter cereal bar (it’s the brand of his friends who he’s doing the podcast with) (favorite flavor : peanuts).
When asked what he thinks about when he’s on the starting grid, he says “Nothing but winning”. Obviously, you get nervous when you’re winning a championship but it’s a good experience. He says, with a laugh, “you think even less” when you’re in the straight at 350 kph.
Having a good lead in the front of the race is the easiest way to make a mistake because your mind can start thinking about stupid shit (“what I’m going to do after the race, where are we going to eat, what are we going to drink, etc”). The most random thought he had was “what am I going to have for dinner tonight” in the middle of the first race he won in Moto2 (he doesn’t remember what he had for dinner that night but he remembers what he had to drink and has photos from the hungover the next day).
Fabio says that after he won the Championship, there were about 10 days between the two remaining races, and he must have partied 8-9 of those days. They celebrated a lot.
“You don’t think you’re a World Champion, you think about all the bad things that have happened before.”
His mother can’t watch the races, she goes for walk and sometimes checks the live rankings. His father has to be alone and walks a lot around the room. His brother watches with friends, tense too.
(after winning) : “I cried, I don’t know, a liter of tears.”
He spends as much time with his family as he can. When he was 14 and living without them (in Spain) at first he thought it was cool but then he realized it wasn’t that easy.
Every time he makes a big purchase, he talks about it with his family (mother, father, brother).
When asked about how the press was talking about him when he was struggling in Moto2/Moto3 : “It’s not that they were talking badly about me but I was 15 and they were comparing me to the 2 legends of this sport, Rossi and Marquez. It was motivation but also a lot of pressure.”
When people were saying that he didn’t deserve to be in MotoGP and that he was taking the sport of another rider, it wasn’t easy. He explains that if 999 people say something nice and one person says something bad, the bad one will stick. He explains that with time, he learned how to put critics aside. He says the critics did make him stronger in the end (and that people critic really easily).
At the beginning of 2022, if he’d been told that he would finish in the top 3 of the Championship, he wouldn’t have believed it with the trouble they were having with the bike.
He says the bike from the last 3 years was almost identical but the one of 2023 is very different.
When asked if he believed he was the best, he said: “I don’t want to be arrogant but you have to believe in yourself and dream, dreaming is free. He considers himself one of the best but it necessitates a lot of work.” When he won the championship, he kept wondering if he was training enough.
One of the hosts says “when I don’t see a story of Fabio sweating on the treadmill, I worry” and he was joking but you know, valid.
How does he train when they can’t be on the bike? Physical training, motocross/dirt bike (during the winter).
Fabio explains that he’s worked with several nutritionists but it costs him a little mentally. He eats correctly and healthily but he knows it’s important to have a good balance (and for example, he’ll have a pizza if he wants one).
He says that over the last years, the motos have changed a lot and they’re becoming more and more important (compared to the driver). He prefers how it was before.
What’s the motivation after having won the Championship? Win it again. As many times as possible. The feeling is so good when you celebrate (the week post-win is the best week of his life) that you want to experience it again.
He’s currently building a house and he already has room in mind for his 2021 bike.
He still feels happy about winning in 2021. Of course, he was angry when he didn’t win in 2022 but he still remembers that he has that one title already.
Fabio lost his voice for two weeks after the celebrations of his title. They talk about it a lot but he really had a good time back then.
He says he deals with fame alright on his own but it’s harder when he’s with his family and he would just like to have a quiet time with them, especially when he's alone with his niece and his nephew.
When he was a kid, he waited hours in front of Valentino’s hospitality to catch a photo with him.
The advantages of fame? Having the chance of meeting so many people that he couldn’t have met otherwise (football players, singers), getting messages when he won from people that he admired as a kid (MBappé, Neymar).
He’s investing his money in a lot of stuff but he’s also enjoying it a lot and he doesn’t want to be someone that doesn’t spend any money (he quotes the french saying that goes “no one wants to die the richest man”). He’s just not spending more than he can afford.
He offered his dad an M3 car that he won thanks to (one of) his poles. He wants to make his mother cry (with happiness) for all of her birthdays. And it brings tears to his eyes to be able to make his mother happy like that.
They did a round of spicy questions when it was either answering or taking a shot of spicy sauce.
“How many cars do you have and you have to name them all” : took the shot.
Driver on the grid that he gets along with the least? Maverick.
He’s never been partying the day before a race but he went out until 6am after winning Barcelona, he slept for two hours and then did testing.
“Before doing a big effort like a MotoGP race, it’s recommended to not have sexual relationships. Do you follow that rule or not?” : “I’ve skipped it. I’ve skipped it because the first time I did it, I had the best race of my life.”
Most famous person in his phone? Neymar.

2023 recap
tagged by @grusinskayas, thanks so much mari! <3 I'll tag @nitrateglow @oftwodarkmoons @valancystirling48 @lilbabylovergirl @jwclapton @nataliawoods @olivethomas @ritahayworrth @emmybrown @gayworths @astonishinglysane @womansfilm @davisbette @daniellesdarrieux only if you want to of course! and anyone else who wants to do this please do! (and tag me!) Only including things that were new to me this year in each category or the lists would be far too long!
top films: I just did the 9 favorite first watches post which were, -The Dream Lady (1918) -Danger Love at Work (1937) -The Cowboy and the Lady (1938) - Pillow to Post (1945) - Home Sweet Homicide (1946) -Turn the Key Softly (1953) - Minari (2020) -Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022) -Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
and I will add some more on to that as well! -Husband Hunters (1927) -Sunny (1930) -Honeymoon Limited (1935) -East Side of Heaven (1939) -Spring Parade (1940) -The Face Behind the Mask (1941) -Marriage is a Private Affair (1944) -This Happy Breed (1944) -Guest Wife (1945) -Molly and Me (1945) -The Wicked Lady (1945) -An Ideal Husband (1947) -Deep Valley (1947) -Night Tide (1961) -The Glass Bottom Boat (1966) -The Grass Harp (1995) -Luca (2021)
top tv series: I have such a hard time remembering what tv shows I watch throughout the year as I don't keep track of them the way I do movies but this is encouraging me to start making lists from now on.
From what I can remember - -All Creatures Great and Small -Sanditon -The Great Canadian Baking Show -The Tenant of Wildfell Hall -Only Murders in the Building -It's a Living -Call The Midwife top books: Did not read much this year and hardly anything new but here are a few I liked!
-The Surgeon's Daughter, Audrey Blake -The Leavenworth Case, Anna Katharine Green -The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Brontë -The Secret Book of Flora Lea, Patti Callahan Henry
favorite song: This is going to be a long section!
Firstly my pride and joy, the playlist of expressing love of nature through music (mostly folk music but some others mixed in) that I worked so hard on at the beginning of the year.
