Snape ask Nr. 33 please!
33. Top 3 songs you think will show up in Snape's most played? (from here)
Oh ho ho you’ve read my bio and opened the can of worms that is my music taste. Thank you for everything, I owe you my life, etc.
It’s like genuinely so hard to choose only three songs so I will also use this opportunity to share my full Snape playlist. I tried to pick songs that were both lyrically relevant and that he might actually listen to/enjoy aka the same criteria I will use to answer this question!
So let’s go!
This is something I’ve wanted to post about for a while now – that is, does the Snapedom know about this song? Aka the song about being obsessed/in love with a girl named Lily? This is the ultimate Snape song, it’s so perfect that I kind of can’t believe it exists. I doubt this song actually got radio play in 1995 (considering how many songs are on this stupid album, which I say with love but it is true), but I love the idea of Snape hearing this song by chance (perhaps on the radio at Grimmauld Place?) and proceeding to have a crisis about it.
This is also a Lily song lol. Lyrically it is about a woman who dies and the narrator holds himself responsible for it (howfitting). “What can I do if she dies? / What can I do if she’s lost? / Just the thought fills my heart with pink frost.” Gah! Also, musically, I think Snape would like it – I feel like an alternative 80s goth-ish vibe fits him really well. He would totally cry to this and have an all around terrible time <3
It's so hard to pick only one more, but I’m going with Bauhaus (because I am a goth ally). Seriously though, I think these lyrics fit Snape really well, especially regarding his upbringing, in the references to the general monotony of daily life and “factorytown.” Plus, you can tell from the title, this song also expresses a desire for success. Basically it just feels right.
Ok I can’t restrain myself so I'm doing honorable mentions, sorry, but these are more specifically geared toward what I actually think he would listen to. “You Should All Be Murdered” by Another Sunny Day is a jangly little 80s/90s tune with some rather, er, hateful lyrics, and “Is It Any Wonder” by The Chameleons is a dark, dreamy song with this lovely melancholy and regretful feel. I could picture him listening to either one of these on repeat, singing along, whistling while he's walking down the Hogwarts hallways, etc
Alright I have to stop myself from writing an essay, as this post is long enough! Thanks so much for sending this ask, I’m always down to talk Snape and/or music (in relation to one another or also not, it doesn’t matter, tell me what you guys think/please talk to me, ok byeeee!!!!)

Radiohead, "Creep" (Live in Oxford, 2001)
youtube
As a band, Radiohead has always been legible. They tell you how to think about them: what their story is, what their music means. And if you were a Radiohead fan in the 90's, you knew they hated their first hit, "Creep." You knew this because they told you, but also because they made a series of albums that were aggressively the opposite of "Creep"'s anglo-grunge angst; because tour documentary Meeting People is Easy made clear their disgust with the kind of mindless fame a song like "Creep" engendered. "I want to have control," Thom had sung in the song, and now they were taking control of their narrative. They wanted to be smart, and "Creep" was not smart.
The problem was, if you were a Radiohead fan in the 90's, you yourself probably loved "Creep." When I first heard the song, I was just the kind of teen to feel that crunchy angst deep in my soul, and even as I went to college and wanted to seem smart and do smart things myself (OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac are all very "I went to college" sort of albums), every moment of "Creep," from its chiming beginning to its jet-takeoff chorus to its transparent self-loathing, was a blast. My gross teenage soul felt seen. And anyway, wasn't Radiohead's rejection of the song exactly the kind of self-loathing that "Creep" itself had managed to capture so perfectly? I was a creep, I was a weirdo; what the hell were we doing there? Let's not do that again, guys. Come on.
After college, I spent a lot of time online arguing with past versions of myself. I was  embarrassed about the college-age Radiohead superfan who'd spent hours decoding the band's inscrutable website updates, convinced that they contained some galaxy-brain higher message, some greater masterpiece. When In Rainbows came out, given away at the band's website for whatever you wished to pay, the fan narrative became that Radiohead had boldly pioneered a new economic model that would save the music industry. But by that point, I'd become knowledgeable enough about both music and the music industry that I could smugly point out to you the many ways in which that was wrong. (And, even today, I can do a solid 7 minutes on how In Rainbows devalued digital music.) I didn't listen to the album for years, even though, when I did, I liked it well enough. Your old self can get in your head, can become a region on your internal map filled with sea dragons and smoke. Don't go here.
When you're in your 40's, like I am now, you can't just react to your last identity; you have too many to choose from. It's easier to look back with regret on the many old selves you've lost than to boldly forge a new identity opposed to your last one. I was a writer for a couple decades, then got a professional job that didn't allow me to write. Since leaving it, I've been trying to put my writer-self back together, but in assembling my last bio, I noted that many of my publications were in outlets that no longer exist. It's easy to fall into regret; to feel illegible, your self-perception out of sync with how others see you. You can't afford these arguments with your past self anymore. You have to find a way to embrace them.
In 2001, after releasing Amnesiac, Radiohead played a triumphant homecoming gig in Oxford, where they'd all met at university. (Like I said: a very "I went to college" band.) At that point, they hadn't played "Creep" in four years, even as they'd put out two confirmed masterpieces, and all signs pointed to them never playing the song again. They weren't planning on playing it that day, either. At the end of their final encore, they began to play "Motion Picture Soundtrack," the bleak love song that closes "Kid A." It was written around the same time as "Creep," but where "Creep" is easily legible, guitars and lyrics united in message, "MPS" pushes against itself, a cozy organ contrasting harshly with Thom Yorke's declaration that he'll never be with the object of his desire, and will only "see you in the next life."  But the crowd wouldn't hear MPS that day. The band flubbed the intro, and instead of starting again, Thom says, "Okay, I've got a better idea. This is a slightly older song."
As the first note of "Creep" hits, a sound erupts from the crowd: not just a cheer, not just a scream, but the clearest expression of release I've ever heard. It is a true surprise, a fulfillment of their heart's desire; one diehard Radiohead fans never expected to happen, or at least not that day. They sing along to every word. And the band shows no signs of the embarrassment they'd felt so strongly for the song since releasing OK Computer. Jonny launches into the first roaring chord of the chorus audibly out of tune, and you can hear a moment of hesitancy, the old embarrassment threatening to creep in, before he gives in to the song's pull. Thom sings it with a gleeful lightness. It's a reunion, a band realizing, in a flash, that they've had enough distance from their past self to love them again. You need that distance, need to see your earlier selves were right, or at least not wrong; not smart, maybe, but maybe smart isn't what really matters. Maybe what really matters isn't being smart or right but that feeling, that release, the crowd and the band together, in perfect purpose, deciding to love the sound itself and its adored history rather than the barren meaning of the words. The explicit legibility slips away into something richer and more complex, and together, they find joy in having made it far enough from that angst to view it with affection.

I did a post like this for the warriors my beloved (here) and people seemed to like it so here's one for the scouts :) had some input from @afrival for this one luv u

eren
if he had twitter he would have a vaporwave bart simpson profile picture and tweet lil peep lyrics. also uses way too many hashtags
he's scared of snakes and hates armin's ball python

he hates feet. toes look weird to him. nobody in his house is allowed to take their socks off
unironically uses faces like ^-^ and :3
acne :(
mikasa
she's really bad at giving advice. don't go to her for help she'll literally be like "that's tough"
probably has like 4 instagram accounts made just to follow eren
solid black profile picture and no bio
maybe now and then she'll put a my chemical romance quote on her story but that's about it, she doesn't respond to dms or anything
doesn't wash that damn scarf so it's probably stinky
sticks staples, pins, etc through the tips of her fingers for no reason other than she likes freaking people out

jean
the only possible relationship dynamic somebody can have with him is rivals to lovers
very short social fuse and has to stay home for several days after public events bc it's just exhausting
he's an introvert adopted by extroverts (connie and sasha) and has to deal with their shenanigans. truly the mom figure between the three of them
marco has to listen to him ranting about connie and sasha's foolery and doesn't have much advice to offer bc he doesn't know either
for a long time he only knew "straight" and "gay" and when he found out about the concept of bisexuality his mind almost imploded
he sighs and yawns a lot and doesn't even realize he does it. people always think he's either annoyed or tired

unironically says things like "pogchamp" and "rad"
he works at zumiez and probably lives there. always rocking their latest drip
jumps up and slaps exit signs
sasha
randomly breaks into song (usually disney songs) and connie will automatically duet
manages to fall asleep in any situation. on buses, while watching movies, sometimes even mid conversation if she's zoned out enough
tried to take armin fishing one time but he almost cried because he felt so bad about it
at least reiner will fish with her though. the himbos always come through
her instagram is all pictures of fish she caught and now and then there's an awkward candid pic of niccolo
stayed overnight in a walmart one time and got away and brags about it but she won't admit it was an accident. panicked and spent the night eating snacks off the shelves to "survive"
while she's talking her voice slowly gets louder and louder and she doesn't realize it until people tell her to stop yelling
historia
pulls people by the ears to bring them down to her level
also kicks people in the shins a lot, if she's arguing with someone they'll usually keep their distance to avoid getting shin kicked
loves climbing on ymir's back and just being carried around like the little creature she is
posts inspirational quotes on her story
would definitely be a cheerleader in high school. nobody would guess a prep like her is dating some grunge girl w a pretty much opposite personality

is always the first one to comment on historia's instagram posts. her comments range from "beautiful my queen!!!" to "damn ma yo ass fat"
she always called reiner gay as a joke then he came out as gay and for a while she thought it was her fault
her and reiner have wlw and mlm solidarity, they're bffs for that matter
if someone tells her that her music is too loud she'll say "huh?" and turn it up
similarly if someone scolds her for something she'll go "hm? repeat that, I'm a little deaf in this ear"
"bro stfu you always tell me you're gonna fire me for being late"
levi

Artist Name: Snow White's Poison Bite
Genres: Post Hardcore, Horror Punk, Emocore, Pop Punk, Screamo, Punk Rock, Hardcore Punk, Metalcore, Alternative Rock
Similar Artists: Get Scared, Blitzkid, Aiden, Misfits, From First To Last, These Hearts, Famous Last Words, Farewell My Love, Alesana, Wednesday 13, Murderdolls, My Chemical Romance, Black Veil Brides, Modern Day Escape, A Smile From The Trenches, A Vain Attempt, Avion Roe, Mindless Self Indulgence, Creature Feature, AFI, Drop Dead Gorgeous
Bio: Just in time for Halloween! This isn't exactly and obscure artist but still a little bit unsung in the scemo/scenecore community in my humble opinion. Snow White's Poison Bite is the baby of Allan Jeremy Cotterill, known best by his stage name Jeremy 13th. Jeremy was born in the UK but moved to Finland when he was six years old. There he met Juuso Puhakka (screamed vocals), Tuomo Korander (lead guitar), and Teemu Leikas (drums) and formed the band all the way back in early 2006. In 2008 bassist Jarkko Penttinen joined. All lyrics were written by Jeremy 13th. Together they released their first demo in 2008, self titled featuring four songs of emotional intensity, beautiful fairytale-themed lyrics, passionate energy and cruel, chaotic riffs.
Snow White's Poison Bite signed a contract with a record label called Poko Records in early January 2009 and released their first EP, "Drama Through Your Stereo". The sound was a little more pop-punk friendly but still held all of the passion and emotive qualities of the previous release. It's a fantastic EP worth checking out if you find it online. Also in 2009 (May) opened for Alesana in Helsinki. Juuso left in late 2009 because of personal and musical disagreements. The band continued into 2010, signing with Sound Of Finland to put out a fun, catchy, campy album called "The Story of Kristy Killings. The Story of Kristy Killings sorta tells the story of a girl named Kristy. She kills people. This album is like a mix of the 2010s post hardcore/metalcore sound with Michale Graves era misfits infused in it's veins with some killer singles like Valentine's Doom, The End Of Prom Night, and of course Kristy Killings.
On May 5th, 2011 Tuomo, Jarkko, and Teemu left the band and forced the band to cancel their remaining tours. Jeremy 13th was the only remaining member. In 2013 the new lineup signs to Victory Records and puts out "Featuring: Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show." The reviews for this album were favorable, still being a fantastic mix of post hardcore and pop punk with that horror-edge to it. This is probably the band at it's most campy and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The songs are all very catchy and fun to listen to, and a great soundtrack for an emo-punk kid's Halloween alongside AFI, Alkaline Trio, or Aiden. It's a charismatic release and worth a listen. The song Zombie Romance actually features Michale Graves from the 90s incarnation of the Misfits, which I personally find pretty freaking cool.
Unfortunately the band officially disbanded in 2018, but is being succeeded by a project of Allan Cotterill's called TH13TEENTH. Allan also had a solo project under his full name where he released a song called The End Of You And Me (Riley), which was also pretty good. If you're interested in what Allan's doing these days, go take a look at TH13TEENTH, but definitely DO NOT skip out on Snow White's Poison Bite. The efforts, hard work, and sacrifices of Allan, Tuomo, Jarkko, and Teemu bleed right through the stereo when you put any of these songs on. This is a solid recommendation from me to you, especially this time of year.

Marc Killian Debuts his First Single 'She's That Way' written in 1970
I chose this song as my first one to do as a solo artist because my parents wrote the lyrics around 1970.
I found the lyric sheet back in the 90s and recorded a version in Nashville that never came out. So I decided to try again, this time playing and singing every part and producing the track in my studio. It's an uptempo sing along country-rock tune with a fun, sassy vibe.
Artist: Marc Killian
New Release: She's That Way
Genre: Rock, Country Rock
Sounds like: : No idea
Located in: : North Carolina
The music we are creating is...
The song's original meaning was before I was born, so I think the message was just something I could create with my parents. My father passed away when I was 24 so it was just a way to connect with him while honoring my parents' musical upbringing. I am sure there is some tale between the two of them with the song, but maybe I don't want to know that. LOL. I am mostly an 80s kid that has been influenced by everyone from Van Halen to Alabama and Prince to Eric Johnson.
Right now we are...
Most excited right now about launching a solo endeavor. I work with my band Mirror Point as well, but this was a chance for me to do something I have put off for many years and that is written and produce music from top to bottom as a solo act. I view it more as a challenge and eventual accomplishment than a solitary thing. I enjoy my writing partner in Mirror Point, but this is a bucket list item.
Artists Bio..
Multi-instrumentalist and multi-genre recording artist from North Carolina. Writing, recording, and producing all his own music for the sheer joy of creation. As a member of the rock band Mirror Point, he is well versed in working with his bandmates and producing other artists, but for his solo career, it became a cathartic way to honor his love for music and a promise to his parents, wife, and daughter to always chase your dreams, insert awww here, but it's true.
His music ranges in feel, mood, tempo, and genre but has a central theme of his love for drums and guitar layered throughout.
Just a huge fan of music. I will listen to things over and over or stop and start again just to hear something I might have missed.

Song List
Lost Boys Life
Every Single Night
The Damage
Same Old Situation
Show Review
A little while ago, alt-pop duo Computer Games stopped by the Baeble office for a stripped-down Baeble NEXT Session. While Computer Games is a new collaboration (they just released their first EP, Lost Boys Life, back in March), the members of the duo are pretty well seasoned in the music industry - the duo is comprised of brother Chuck and Darren Criss. Although they’ve always wanted to do a collaboration like this, the brothers initially ended up going their own ways and making their own names in music. Darren Criss has obviously made a big name for himself, creating the Youtube sensation Starkid and starring on Glee, while Chuck spent his time as a part of the indie-rock band Freelance Whales. Computer Games grew out of the brothers’ frequent basement jams from their childhood, and their regular songwriting collaborations.
For their Baeble NEXT Session, Computer Games performed some songs from their debut EP, including title track “Lost Boys Life” and “Every Single Night,” as well as a couple songs of older songs from the brother’s early days playing together; “Damage” and “Same Old Situation.” Beginning the session with a full backing band that includes drums, bass, piano, and the Criss’ on acoustic guitars, they strip it down for their last two songs, performing with nothing more than a couple of acoustic guitars and their harmonizing voices. Between songs, Chuck and Darren talk about their 80s-inspired songwriting, how their collaboration came about, and their goal of making music to make people happy. If you’re finding yourself in need of a little 80s alt-pop happiness, our newest NEXT session might do the trick.
Artist Bio
As high school kids, Darren Criss and his older brother Chuck spent nearly every afternoon playing music in their basement for hours upon hours. With Chuck on guitar and Darren on drums, the San Francisco natives tapped into everything from British power-pop to Bay Area punk to create their own rowdy breed of garage rock. Though they’d always planned on forming a bonafide band together, each ended up striking out on his own path: Darren embarked on a singing/acting career that included the creation of YouTube sensation StarKid, starring on Glee and in the next season of American Crime Story, and a string of successes on the Broadway stage. Meanwhile, Chuck joined acclaimed indie-rock act Freelance Whales, with whom he recorded and toured with as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for several years. But in 2016, the two finally decided it was the right time to revisit their teenage ambitions and launch a guitar-fueled alt-pop band that they’ve named Computer Games.
The basement was a really hallowed place for us growing up, and spending all that time knocking around and making music together is what made us into the people we are now, says Darren, lead singer for Computer Games. So to finally follow through on that dream, and start this band together after wanting it for so long it’s just wildly exciting for us.
With its blazing guitar solos and boundless energy, Computer Games debut EP Lost Boys Life perfectly captures the spirit of adolescent abandon. At the same time, Computer Games show a sharp sense of songcraft born from years of refining their musical vision. One of the things about this project being a long time coming is that were taking the kind of riffs that we would’ve played back in the basement, but adding different layers to turn it into something new to put out into the world, notes Chuck.
Darren and Chuck share songwriting duties for Computer Games, drawing on their indie sensibilities to build the ideal backdrop for their often-introspective lyrics. In the making of Lost Boys Life, Computer Games went for a chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter effect by enlisting the pop expertise of New York City-based music production team THE ELEV3N. Known for their work with artists like Meghan Trainor and Jesse McCartney, the Criss brothers hoped THE ELEV3Ns production sensibility would add a more contemporary, familiar sound to their initial left-of-center tracks. The result was just that: a shiny sheen polish on scrappy garage pop. And for the mixing of Lost Boys Lifean EP that gracefully blends raw live performance with electronic elements the band looked to their long-time hero, producer & mixer Tony Hoffer, whose responsible for a number of albums that shaped the Criss brothers musical background: Phoenix Alphabetical, The Thrills So Much For The City, and Becks Midnite Vultures, to name a few.
With the band name referencing a bit of low-key childhood mischief (As kids we weren’t allowed to play video games, but we had games on our computer so there was a loophole there, explains Chuck), Computer Games delights in what Darren refers to as nerdstalgia. As were crawling out of our 20s, a sentiment shared by the band is this eternal sense of nostalgia, which is something pretty prominent in nerd culture, he says. It’s about liking whatever you like, and not needing to ever apologize for that.
That nostalgia also extends to the pop heavyweights of the mid-80s, according to Chuck. A lot of bands seem influenced by the 80s right now, but they’re usually going for that darker, Blade Runner vibe, he says. We wanted to look at parts of the era that haven’t really been explored as inspiration some of the music that just super fun. Naming Miami Sound Machine, Lionel Richie, and Huey Lewis and the News among their reference points on Lost Boys Life, Computer Games channel that outrageous fun into a deeply melodic sound that feels both fresh and timeless.
The most unabashedly joyful track on Lost Boys Life, Every Single Night fuses jangly guitar riffs and intricate rhythms with huge harmonies and some Michael Jackson-esque vocal styling. I tried to crush those consonants and vowels and make as many phonetically inspired lyrical decisions as possible like how with Michael Jackson, ‘jam on is suddenly a really cool lyric, just because it sounds cool, says Darren. On We Like It, a flurry of handclap-backed acoustic strumming gives way to a soaring, soulful anthem that’s epic in scope and subtly defiant in the message. 'We Like It partly came from hearing people of my generation or older generations worrying about kids being glued to their phones, and how that’s such a cyclical concept like how our parents were worried about us being glued to the TV, and their parents were worried about them listening to rock-and-roll, says Darren. It’s about kids saying, 'This is our life and this is how we express ourselves, and we don’t have to explain that to anyone.
The EPs moodiest moment, the slow-burning Lost Boys Life merges its heavy beat with an intense synth riff inspired by the darkly glamorous vampires of the 1987 horror movie. In the lyrics, meanwhile, Computer Games slip into a dreamy romanticism that’s more autobiographical in nature. To me, that riff sounds like so many nights walking home alone in the city, whether it’s San Francisco or New York or L.A., says Darren. There’s an aimless quality to it, and the songs about finding meaning with someone after living an aimless Lost Boys life for so long.Throughout Lost Boys Life, Computer Games sculpt a kaleidoscopic sound that reflects their eclectic appetites. Listing early-90s grunge, late-90s pop, Led Zeppelin, Supergrass, and Spoon among their formative influences, the Criss brothers each started studying music as little kids. But while Chuck quit piano lessons early on, Darren kept up with violin and added guitar to his repertoire by elementary school. Chuck was a late-bloomer, which impressed me and made me jealous at the same time, says Darren. At some point in high school he got a banjo as a joke but then got really good at it really fast. After that, he started playing guitar too and then got really good at that really fast. Once Darren got his drum kit, the two took to the basement and started working on original songs together.
Through the years, they continued sharing songs with each other, sending demos back and forth via email while away at college. I always admired those early songs, and I’ve still got aspirations of putting them through the Computer Games filter and seeing what we can make of them now, says Darren.
For Chuck and Darren, there’s at least one major upside to the long delay in launching Computer Games: that hard-won sense of freedom that comes with pursuing their purest passions. Instead of trying to chase whats next, we’re trying to do right by those kids in the basement, says Darren. We’ve learned to embrace our love of what makes music fun for us, and we’re putting that into a project that’s 100 percent dedicated making people happy. It’s about creating something completely unique to us, and trying to make as many smiles as humanly possible.

My Top 120 Songs Of 2017
Previously: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
Tumblr media
The one saving grace is we do have 12 fewer than last year.
As always, criteria and info:
This is a list of what I personally like, not ones I’m saying are the “best” from the year; more subjective than objective
No artist is featured more than once
If it comes down to choosing between two songs for an artist, I try to give more weight to a single or featured track; not the ultimate factor, but it typically makes sharing the music easier
Speaking of… each song on the list is linked in the title if you wanna check any or every out for yourself
Oh, also, off the suggestion of Mike Gilkes -- and a few others -- I made this whole thing into a Spotify playlist, which you can peep here (includes 114 of the 120):
Let’s go?
youtube
120) Big Sean & Metro Boomin f/ 21 Savage - “Pull Up N Wreck”
Some mediocre, listenable rap made by dudes who know a bit better (well, at least 2/3rds of them).
119) Maroon 5 f/ Future - “Cold”
This song makes me feel mostly nothing... but the first minute of the video does have some solid Adam Levine alone-in-the-car acting.
/oh my god it has 119 million views
This was a lot easier to enjoy when I assumed it went unnoticed. Bonus points for the Wu-Tang shirt at the end.
118) Bleachers - “Hate That You Know Me”
Closed out 2017 undecided as ever on one Jack Antonoff. Should we hate him for dating Lena Dunham? Somehow respect him more? Give him mega credit for his big time pop songwriting collabs? Or is that a ding? Is he a nerd or the coolest guy in the cocktail bar? I do not know the answers to any of these questions, and this song is merely OK.
UPDATE: THEY GAWN
117) B.o.B f/ T.I. & Ty Dolla $ign - “4 Lit”
Real bad song with a mindless/terrible/misogynistic chorus. Yet... something about professional musicians sitting in a room and coming up with “4 Lit” as some sort of escalated to catchphrase to “lit” is just hilarious.
116) Prophets of Rage - “Unfuck The World”
Sure, this hits a lot of the same beats as Rage Against The Machine’s “Sleep Now In The Fire” from 18 years ago, but in these increasingly polarized, political times, I welcome their voice.
115) Kacy Hill - “Like A Woman”
This song is so chill and ethereal that it seems almost unfeasible for my punk/hip-hop/XX chromosome havin’ ass to completely sync with its wave.
114) The Decemberists - “Ben Franklin’s Song”
What happens when pop indie teams up with the lyrical stylings of Lin-Manuel Miranda? Well, this. I’m not sure if The Decemberists drop f-bombs in any of their other songs, but it pleases me to think it only happened here.
113) Offset & Metro Boomin - “Ric Flair Drip”
Mostly here for the beat.
Tumblr media
112) Hurray For The Riff Raff - “Hungry Ghost”
A cool song that’s hard to put into a box. Indie? Pop? Rock? Forget labels, just enjoy.
(Minus a few points for the low hanging “girl/world” rhyme)
111) Wavves - “Dreams Of Grandeur”
I was pretty let down by the new Wavves LP, but this song sounds enough like the old stuff to be a net positive (despite being, like, 70 seconds too long)
110) Culture Abuse - “So Busted”
Culture Abuse got on my radar with last year’s all-timer, “Dream On”. It was an unrelenting, robotic pulverization. “So Busted” is more of a drug comedown; a ballad, even. While “Dream On” wanted to seek you out and kill you like a terminator; “So Busted” just wants a cuddle.
109) Trey Songz - “#1Fan”
This song is so dumb and funny and pseudo competent. Really not sure how the R&B guys get away with this shit.
108) The Killers - “The Man”
Is this in a movie? It should be in a movie. It’s kind of, like, a better version of what Arcade Fire has been trying to be.
107) New Lenox - “Protest Sweater”
A good song for the ending 2017 -- or any year, really -- and its run time (1:30) would make Joyce Manor proud.
Tumblr media
106) Logic - “Everybody”
This is really good, but it reminds me so much of Kendrick that it becomes distracting.
105) Gorillaz f/ DRAM - “Andromeda”
Didn’t spend enough time listening to the new Gorillaz record, but I actually put the blame on them: it was long, man. So while I woulda loved to pick one of the songs with a cool cameo (hi, Vince Staples!), this is the one I actually had around the most. It’s all we’ve come to expect from this cartoon band -- kinda British, kinda futuristic, very undisturbed. Also, if it gets you back to the album before me, I heard that Damon Albarn told all collaborating artists to record their parts like the world was ending tomorrow.
104) Dropkick Murphys - “Blood”
If you know me at all, you know I historically have not been a fan of this band. But for whatever reason, this one connected -- bagpipes and all.
103) Captain, We’re Sinking - “Books”
CWS was never, ever going to top the falling-apart-desperation of 2013′s “The Future Is Cancelled”, but this song comes pleasantly close.
102) IRONTOM - “Be Bold Like Elijah”
My buddy Crooks rec’d this band, and the guitars give me Queens Of The Stone Age vibes in the best possible way. A bio on lastFM compared them to Arctic Monkeys, and you know what? I agree with that, too.
101) Jidenna - “A Bull’s Tale”
This song feels primed to explode and makes you wanna rip the shirt off your chest; only we don’t know if the bomb’s gonna blow in the middle or at the end.
100) Jeff Tweedy - “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”
Yeah yeah, the original version of this dropped in 2002, and yes, it’s just a cover by the dude who originally sang it. I... do not care. It made me appreciate the confessional regret all over again.
99) Talib Kweli f/ Yummy Bingham & Jay Electronica - “All Of Us”
It was all bad just a week ago
Kweli and Jay Elect are a collab made in conscious rap heaven, so this song was more than a pleasant surprise.
98) Rise Against - “House On Fire”
This song could have been on “Revolutions Per Minute”. Or maybe I’m just saying that because of the hand grenade lyric in the chorus.
97) HAIM - “Want You Back”
Can’t imagine there being a lamer song on this list. HAIM and Bleachers should get in a wuss rock beef that ends with pistols.
96) The Bigger Empty - “By Its Own (So What)”
My producer plays bass in this band. This song is super solid, and, maybe most importantly in these completely divisive times, unoffensive and approachable. Kinda Hush Sound-y.
95) Little Big Town - “Lost In California” (note: link is to live version)
From the bros and broettes who brought us “Day Drinking” comes this much more subdued track. If you squint, it doesn’t really even seem like country. Granted, if they sang “Alabama” instead of “California”, you could probably call that claim out immediately.
94) Lana Del Rey - “Heroin”
Another beautiful/dreamy song from an artist who’s near-perfected that niche.
93) Wavves & Culture Abuse - “Up And Down”
Wavves and Culture Abuse have already made appearances on this list, and we haven’t even cracked the Top 80. Fortunately, their collaboration scored a little higher than their individual outputs. Shout out to their uplifting outro “I’ll just get high and I’ll die alone”.
92) The Chainsmokers & Coldplay - “Something Just Like This”
This song played at my gym all the time, and I was positive it was Coldplay. Then someone told me it was The Chainsmokers. Then I looked it up on YouTube, and it says “The Chainsmokers & Coldplay”... so what’s the deal, assholes?
91) Lil Peep f/ Lil Tracy - “Awful Things”
I hadn’t heard of Lil Peep when I found out of his passing in 2017. After looking up some pictures, I was nearly 100% positive his music was not for me. This was incorrect. I haven’t really listened to songs that sound like his; it’s kind of like rap that treads this line of being bad while also kinda sounding like alternative rock; destructive love song that doesn’t flinch.
Tumblr media
90) AFI - “Dark Snow”
Nothing new, but Davey Havok can still sing circles around almost anybody.
89) Dashboard Confessional - “Love Yourself” (link is to live, partial version)
Well, Dashboard covered Biebs, and we all lived to tell the tale.
88) Garrett Dale - “2016 Was...”
This song would be a blast as a singalong in a late night hotel room. There’s something calming about celebrating -- or at least acknowledging -- everything sucking.
87) Katy Perry f/ Skip Marley - “Chained To The Rhythm”
Got more than a few issues with this song, but it’s catchy, so they’re mostly forgiven. Even though it’s Katy Perry, I was pretty surprised to see it racked up 444 million views.
And seriously who the hell is Skip Marley?!
86) The Ramblin’ Boys Of Pleasure - “Glug, Glug, Glug”
Now is probably a good time to plug the lead track from my band’s b-sides record that came out this year (ten years in the making, baby!). Mandatory listening if you’ve ever bonged brandy, partied in Champaign, or counted down in a country voice.
Tumblr media
85) Charly Bliss - “Glitter”
It’s been nearly a year, but it’s still somewhat difficult to calibrate this singer’s voice. Is it a little too saccharine, too childlike, or just perfect? You be the judge.
84) Emperor X - “Wasted On The Senate Floor”
This singer is real god damn frenetic.
83) Father John Misty - “Total Entertainment Forever”
/obligatory “yes, this is the one with the Taylor Swift lyric” reference
FJM has such a pro’s pro voice and makes super sound music... but it’s also kinda hard to have an overall opinion. The more 50-50 I get, the more I think it’s not all that great. The video is a microcosm. Like... why is Macaulay Culkin paying Cobain? Is this a commentary on capitalism? Oooh, nah nah nahs are nice! As divided as I still am, I’m pretty positive this song is good-if-not-great.
82) St. Vincent - “New York”
This song is further proof that soft, radio friendly music can still benefit from a well placed “motherfucker”.
81) Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness - “Dead Man’s Dollar”
As long as Andrew McMahon’s project is called “Andrew McMahon In the Wilderness”, I will make fun of him like clockwork.
This song is nice. I sometimes sing “I want Thon Maker” when he says “I want to make a” in the chorus.
80) Kele Okereke - “Streets Been Talkin’”
Kele’s most impressive feat was sneaking “bae” right into the chorus without me noticing until literally right now.
79) Rick Ross - “Summer Seventeen”
How the hell did this dumbass song get so high up on the list? I have no explanation. Classic Roazy though -- aim high, fake it till you make it. When I started my new job in August, IT reset my password to “summer2017″, and I had this song’s hook in my head nearly every time I typed it in. All told, a pretty hilarious way to start a work day.
78) Michelle Branch - “Best You Ever”
This song sounds so dark and sultry, but I’m not totally sure why. Branch rules.
77) Calvin Harris f/ Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean - “Feels”
The best way to ruin this song for anyone is to point out how much the hook sounds like Katy Perry singing “Don’t be afraid to catch fish”.
Tumblr media
76) Morrissey - “Spent The Day In Bed”
This is a very low maintenance lyric video. So you can either make fun of that or the “I spent the day in bed / I’m not the type, but I love my bed” line.
75) Red City Radio - “If You Want Blood (Be My Guest)”
The “We don’t need a god damn thing from you” chorus is a little punk cliche to win me over, but the Oklahoma City reference (”where our dreams come true and die”) is the line I’ve been waiting for since I found out RCR was from there.
74) Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs - “Talk 2 Her”
The closest we’ll get to a new Clash song in 2017.
73) Bad Cop/Bad Cop - “Womanarchist”
Factoring in the 2017′s themes (#MeToo, Harvey dead, etc.), this has to be the song title of the year. I smiled ear-to-ear watching this music video.
72) The Movielife - “Mercy Is Asleep At The Wheel”
Hey, The Movielife reunited!
71) The Rocket Summer - “Gone Too Long”
Unlike that lazy ass Morrissey, The Rocket Summer gave us a lyric video that basically passes as a legit music video.
70) Miguel f/ Travis Scott - “Sky Walker”
Me, every time I listen to this song:
“Ooh, beat is pretty solid.”
“Ah yeah, the hook’s good. I thought I really liked this song though...”
/falsetto part
“AW YEAH.”
69) Queens Of The Stone Age - “The Way You Used To Do”
Had never known about the Josh Homme/Elvis comparisons, but after hearing this, I totally get it now. Also: god damn it, man.
68) Macklemore f/ Skylar Grey - “Glorious”
What can we do to make Skylar Grey more famous? She Ginger Rogers’d for Em on “SNL” -- seriously, she played piano and sung Dido, Beyoncé, and Rihanna hooks (that’s a solid ass trinity!) -- has unarguably awesome songs, and never takes anything off the table. I honestly don’t care if she has another hit... let’s just, like, all Venmo her five bucks or something.
One of my fav music videos on the list so far. Be as skeptical of Macklemore as you want, but when his grandma offers him a drink (haha) then says she wants to “do it all” with their day together, it warms the hearts.
67) Direct Hit! - “Blood On Your Tongue”
Direct Hit! continues to be the best modern version of Green Day, The Ramones*, and themselves.
(* - without being Ramones-core)
66) Boyd & The Stahfools - “Party Penguin”
I’ve been in the game for a long while, but, for the first time in my career, I finally was part of a music video. If you told me it was a 2Pac parody that advertised craft beer, I’d, well, I’d believe you. We got Dave Hernandez on the hook, Mike Healy as Dr. Dre, and yours truly as Makaveli.
youtube
And all jokes aside, “On vacation like Bev D’Angelo” is one of my favorite penned lines.
65) Rancid - “Telegraph Avenue”
I like when Tim sings about grabbing his left-handed guitar.
64) Big Sean f/ Jeremih - “Light”
Sean Don made a forgettable 2017 album with many throwaway tracks -- but “Light” ain’t one of ‘em. I liked this song even before the touching video cemented its power.
63) blink 182 - “Parking Lot”
This is that weird mix of what makes all new blink really good and really eh at the same time -- Skiba involved (for better or worse), inspired Mark (for better or worse), and Travis’ overplaying (for better or worse). It’s for sure easier if you just turn your brain off and go with it.
Why does he reference Chicago in the verse then California in the pre-chorus?
I SAID “OFF”.
62) New Found Glory - “Your Jokes Aren’t Funny”
This song doesn’t break a ton of new ground, but it’s got this circular, easy chorus that keeps me coming back.
61) Teenage Bottlerocket - “Goin’ Back To Wyo”
Similar to Red City Radio writing about OKC, I can’t get enough of TB writing about their home. Did I blast this song while driving across the entire state alone this summer? Do you know me an ounce?
60) Frank Turner - “The Sand In The Gears”
A little dissatisfied with the current administration? Frank may be from across the pond, but he’s with you on this one, man. One of my favorite parts of this song is when he breaks the rhyme scheme just to angrily say “I thought that we were winning the war against the homophobes and the racists”.
59) Billy Bragg - “Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted”
Billy Bragg is here for all of us, with perspective, wisdom, and insightful guidance in tow.
58) Dave Hause - “The Flinch”
Send this one to an old flame if you’re hoping, you know, to maybe rekindle.
57) Selena Gomez f/ Gucci Mane - “Fetish”
That’s right -- “Bad Liar” got beat out by this significantly less popular single featuring one of my least favorite rappers.
/looks up play totals
”Fetish”... 130 million
“Bad Liar”... 214 million
Comparably popular, I say! For me, this one is all about the chorus -- and that beat’ll get you swayin’.
56) Jay Electronica - “Letter To Falon”
‘Cause who gon’ save them babies? / And finally put a definite to all those maybes
Death, taxes, maybe death again, and Jay Electronica never releasing a full length album. Our man has been on Roc Nation for nearly ten years. I hate him so much. /anxiously awaits his next move
Jay Electricity in his zone on this one; so comfortable, in full operation within the confines.
55) Laura Jane Grace - “Adore”
I don’t know who Amy Shark is, but LJG covered her song and punted my heart into Lake Michigan.
youtube
54) Russian Girlfriends - “Antidote”
Upbeat, direct song that starts kinda Metric-y with the riff but then gets more pop punk as it progresses.
53) Brian Fallon - “If Your Prayers Don’t Get To Heaven”
My fiancee laughed when I looked up how to play this song on the guitar and the guy who tabbed it out wrote “Typical Brian Fallon open chords” in the intro.
52) Cloud Nothings - “Enter Entirely”
If “Womanarchist” is the ‘best’ song title of the year, “Enter Entirely” is certainly the coolest. And please don’t let the very boring music video fool you -- this song gets after it, man. If you are a fan of rock music, it would blow me away if you found this song remotely objectionable.
(After seeing CN open for Japandroids on back-to-back nights this November, it feels criminal to have such a slow song represent the band, as their drummer is the Russell Westbrook of the indie scene. That dude does not tire and comes off as more machine than man.)
51) Conor Oberst - “Napalm”
Oberst released a 10-song album in 2016 that was super brooding and piano-y... then he released another album in 2017 (17 songs) that had every track from his previous record and seven new ones. Kind of a weird move, no? This is one of those seven; suffice to say it’s a little more upbeat.
50) Sorority Noise - “No Halo”
You could tell me this song came out in 2002, 2007, or both -- but not 2017. How is this not a time capsuled rival of Taking Back Sunday or My Chemical Romance? I don’t know, but if you like a lot of death, this one’s for you.
49) N.E.R.D f/ Rihanna - “Lemon”
Let’s lighten the mood back up with some RiRi rap. My buddy Crooks’ take: “That's how every 2017 hip-hop beat should sound.”
Tumblr media
48) Kesha - “Praying”
It’s damn near impossible to talk about this song without talking about The Note. It occurs at 4:21, and it will make you a little faint.
Kesha dusts herself off and gets beyond empowered in this one. This song could legitimately soundtrack the entire #MeToo movement. When the drums kick in halfway through, you’ll be ready to fight back too.
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name
47) The Smith Street Band - “Laughing (Or Pretending To Laugh)”
This soft, hopeful love song is almost *too* respectful when it comes to interactions with the opposite sex. I’m not sure there’s a more endearing 2017 lyric than “And I don't wanna marry you just yet / But at least let me get you a cider / And I don’t even think I’d have to pay for it / Hopefully there’s a couple left on the rider”.
46) Run The Jewels - “Legend Has It”
Whenever I think of this song, I will always have that image of El-P holding up that gun to the bunny’s head. This song is braggadocious, each line one-upping the previous in perpetuity. Man, they probably rule live.
45) Vic Mensa - “Say I Didn’t”
Vic Mensa's Roc Nation debut (CAN YOU HEAR ME AT ALL, JAY ELECTRONICA?!?!?!?!?!?) was real strong, and this one gives you a good taste of what he’s about. He’s intense but controlled and even gets a little soulful. And depending what sphere you come from, you’ll either be extremely more or extremely less interested after he drops a Weezer reference. If that gives you trepidation, maybe the Nate Dogg namedrop will reel you back in?
44) Kendrick Lamar - “HUMBLE.”
I like Kendrick Lamar and will always recognize his talent, platform, and body of work (there’s a real case to be made that his “Control” verse killed hip-hop, and it’s just been an animated zombie ever since). Having said that...
He doesn’t always make it easy. The all caps song titles, the weird high pitched flow, the massive reliance of “bitch” in his choruses... yet, he’s the same dude who begs for stretch marked butts and body positivity. I don’t know, man. By the time he hits the “I make a play fucking up your whole life” line, I’m nearly all the way back in.
Last complaint: that organ-y keyboard thing could be so much louder. The beat almost feels diet because of that decision.
43) PKEW PKEW PKEW - “Cold Dead Hands”
This song is about how you can’t freeze this band to death, because they’ll party their way out of the situation.
42) Weezer - “Any Friend Of Diane’s”
This song puts me in a trance; they sing the same chorus lyric a million times, and I still almost want more.
41) Taylor Swift - “I Did Something Bad”
If this song isn’t a hit in 2018, then I do not know anything. For as uneven and questionable as her new singles were, this song has none of that. By the time she’s rolling on the tremendously magnetic “over and over and over again” part, you’ll feel like it’s 2009.
Maybe the old Taylor is still alive after all.
40) Best Ex - “Someday”
What’s that, you want your pop with a lot less baggage? This song is currently at 1,042 views, which is further proof of no justice in this world. I remember grocery shopping with this in the headphones, and you woulda thought it was the happiest moment of my life by the expression on my smiling, dumb face.
39) White Reaper - “Judy French”
“There are no good new rock bands wahhhhh”
Nah -- you just suck at finding music when it’s never been easier in human history, I guess?
Tumblr media
38) Anti-Flag - “The Criminals”
This band has always lived in this dramatic life-and-death world, and it’s been going on for so long, that it’s like their vision of what they were always rebelling against was willed into existence.
37) French Montana f/ The Weeknd & Max B - “A Lie”
My dislike of French Montana is so high that I sometimes think about having to answer for saying something heinous about him. Kinda like when Kevin Garnett was accused of calling Charlie Villanueva (who has alopecia) a “cancer patient.”
KG’s all-time response:
“I am aware there was a major miscommunication regarding something I said on the court last night. My comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact ‘You are cancerous to your team and our league,’" Garnett said in a statement to the media on Wednesday.
Hahahaha.
French, you are a cancer to hip-hop and our league. His verse even references stupid Karl Malone, because why wouldn’t it? The good news is we have The Weeknd on the hook *and* in the first verse, so you can basically just pretend it’s his solo song with a few regrettable cameos.
36) The Penske File - “Oh Brother”
The Penske File make it look effortless sometimes. After hearing this song and doing a Malört shot with their singer, I have higher hopes than ever for their 2018 full length.
35) The Front Bottoms - “Don’t Fill Up On Chips”
TFB’s new album didn’t give me everything I wanted in terms of uptempo bangers, but the lyrics, sentiment, and craftsmanship are all still very much present.
34) Vince Staples - “Big Fish”
The Juicy J chorus might not win a Pulitzer (”I was up late night ballin’ / Countin’ up hundreds by the thousand”), but Vince is rapping invincible, and by the time the lyrics call back his monster single (“Norf Norf”), you won’t be questioning anything anymore.
33) Julien Baker - “Shadowboxing” (link is to live version)
I know that you don't understand 'Cause you don't believe what you don't see When you watch me throwing punches at the devil It just looks like I'm fighting with me
I swear, Julien Baker might be one of the only people on this planet with the power to shut us all up and listen.
32) Paramore - “Fake Happy”
Paramore is a band that does dumb shit all the time. Infighting, legal drama, horrible makeover after horrible makeover. Seriously, this is real:
Tumblr media
But through it all, there’s that unbreakable Hayley voice, and it’s like everything is gonna be OK again. I mean, no, it’s not -- but let’s still enjoy these fleeting moments, full blown pop transition or not.
31) Nothington - “Cobblestones”
This song briefly sounds like Lucero before turning into no nonsense despair punk.
30) Lorde - “Perfect Places”
Such a phenomenal album closer; great to have her back in the pop music fold. Car, headphones, party, whatever -- this song goes all around you.
29) Remember Sports - “I Liked You Best”
If Kesha’s high note in “Praying” was pop music’s peak vocal moment in 2017, I’d like to nominate the “You made this me-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-hess” (2:37) part as punk’s.
28) Phoenix - “J-Boy”
This band makes such gorgeous music.
27) Drake - “Free Smoke” (no link)
Drake’s full album output, in minutes, for the last four years:
2013: 59 minutes 2014: N/A 2015: 108 minutes 2016: 81 minutes
And this doesn’t include stray singles, diss tracks, or cameos (2014 had “0 To 100″, for example). What I’m saying is, despite high quality material, Aubrey has saturated us with music for nearly half a decade. So even though I dig him lots, it was like “Really?!” when I heard he was releasing 2017′s “More Life” and “WHAT” when I found out it was another 81 minutes (the same length as 2016′s “Views”). Though the record is stylistically very different -- I keep hearing people use the word “grime”, though I have no idea what it means -- it’s still got bars. My favorite stray lines (they add up):
- “More life, more everything” - “I dunk text J-Lo / Old number, so it bounce back” - “Hilton rooms, gotta double up / Writin’ our name on a double cup” - “I fall asleep in sororities / I had some different priorities” - “Women I like was ignorin’ me / Now they like ‘Aren’t you adorable?’ / I know the question rhetorical” - “I make too much these days to ever say ‘Poor me’” - “I wanna move to Dubai / So I don’t never have to kick it with none of you guys”
But, it wouldn’t be Drake without making fun of him some. The song beings with, well, him sampling himself at an award show. The sample:
And more chune for your headtop So watch how you speak on my name, you know?
Which begs the question: did he do the weird Jamaican accent knowing he was gonna sample it? It treads this weird genius/calculated doofus line. All I know is it makes me laugh.
26) Tigers Jaw - “Favorite”
This song could make me pensive and unhappy on the sunniest of days.
25) Tee Grizzley - “First Day Out”
Like many, I first heard of Tee Grizzley from a LeBron James Instagram workout video. It was an easy sell: Detroit, ferocious beat, and the dude goes *hard*. I got a little too excited and emailed my hip-hop friends: “What the fuck is this? This is GOOD.”
Tumblr media
This was before I realized he kinda sounds the same in every song. It’s no matter -- we’ll always have “First Day Out”, a brief time in June 2017 where I thought Tee Grizzley could be the next to run the game.
I can’t even be in public with my hoodie on
24) The War On Drugs - “Strangest Thing”
It’s very difficult to write about The War On Drugs without mentioning how transcendent it is to listen to them in the car. Everyone is right about that, but, for me, I also have to mention how much this dude sounds like Dylan. People say Springsteen, but I hear so much Bob. You don’t necessarily have to get “past” it, but you do kinda have to get used to it. Once you do, the lead guitar will carry you into the clouds. This music will make you contemplate and reflect.
23) Foxing - “Night Channels”
Let’s keep the mood contemplative; you almost feel sleepless if not completely locked in to this one.
UPDATE: This dropped in 2015, /sigh
22) Craig Finn - “God In Chicago”
This is more of a movie than a song -- and the visuals agree. Focus in on the lyrics, take in the story, and then do it again soon because you’ll catch new wrinkles each time. One of the year’s best videos, for sure. Punk News phrases it well: “Here he’s made a solo album of losers who have no idea they’ve already lost.”
21) DJ Khaled f/ Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne - “I’m The One”
No one wanted you to know he had sex in 2017 more than DJ Khaled. He made his infant son Asahd the “Executive Producer” for this video. Why? Because he’s an idiot. Khaled’s still existing fame continues to confound. He’s more faux-platitudes than man at his point. So why do the best artists in the world collaborate with someone so seemingly unintelligent? I don’t know, but this song bangs and was probably my Song of the Summer. We got JB on the hook, a dumb-but-amusing Quavo*, Wayne trying to gain footing, and Chance running across the finish line backward with Best Verse title belt. But Khaled won’t let you forget about him, blaring DJ tag and all. This song suffers for that, and it’s all his fault.
(* - his ad lib of just repeating everything becomes charming once you start to get Stockholm Syndrome with the song)
20) Ed Sheeran - “The Shape Of You”
What a 2017 for the man behind the year’s best (super successful) pop song.  At the turn of the calendar, I barely knew who he was, but before we all knew it, there was a legitimate public outcry because he was on “Game of Thrones” for, like, two minutes. What a time. Oh, also, the “Come on, be my baby...” bridge gave me some “Real World: New Orleans” acid flashbacks.
Great meme, take us out.
Tumblr media
19) Minus The Bear - “Last Kiss”
If the shattered neon heart didn’t give it away, this is a “the relationship is definitively over” breakup song. Seeing them play it at Riot Fest made me miss my late friend Luke; I wish he could have heard this.
18) Hot Water Music - “Never Going Back”
I’ve always maintained Chuck Ragan plays guitar and sings songs like a running back. Well, this song carpe diem’s me enough to play actual running back*.
(* - jk, would never do this unless it was against very small children)
17) Lucky Boys Confusion - “Good Luck”
My hometown heroes released their comeback album in 2017, and I’m not sure any track sums up the effort better. By the time Adam sings “Burned out, they call us / Screw ‘em, we got endless memories / Punk rock and the polish / I hope it gave you something to believe”, there are no dry eyes left.
(And yes, this could totally be an AM Taxi song, but with Ryan Fergus’ killer-fills-only drumming, I’m glad it wasn’t.)
16) Hodera - “Baltimore”
This song would likely have a Top 5 objective approval rating of any on the list.
...“The Wire” forever.
15) Iron Chic - “A Headache With Pictures”
It ain’t heavy, it ain’t heaven
If Hot Water Music is carpe diem, what is Iron Chic -- seize the life?! My favorite description of the band came from Sam Sutherland, who tweeted: “Whose day has already been derailed by the unavoidably weighty introspection of listening to the new Iron Chic record.”
They are a certified run-through-brick-walls outfit. One of my final 2017 memories of this song was subtweeting “Now I know” the night I got engaged and having my buddy Ricky think she might’ve declined the proposal. May have to include a ring emoji next time.
14) The Flatliners - “Indoors”
Had to listen to this, like, five or six times before its brilliant greatness overtook me like falling into a river. The chorus is so, so heartfelt.
Don’t sleep on the video, either (especially the end).
13) Sylvan Esso - “Die Young”
Though I have tickets to see them for the first time in 2018, I am not mega-versed in the catalogue of Sylvan Esso. But this feels like their best song. Imagine if Romeo and Juliet turned out OK.
12) Oso Oso - “Shoes (The Sneaker Song)”
Jade from Oso Oso would likely want all of the above stylized in lowercase -- but this ain’t Jade’s list. This was my favorite new band of 2017, and I do believe they made the year’s best album. It’s early-2000s emo at times, pop punk at others, and all ear candy.
11) Sincere Engineer - “Corn Dog Sonnet No. 7″
Staying in the new artist lane, I proudly introduce Sincere Engineer. This band sounds like if Modern Baseball had a little sister. By the time singer Deanna Belos sings “I’m still learning how to be”, you want to pat her on the back and give her all your best advice.
Fantastic music video -- and she confirmed to me this past weekend that it’s real mustard, not puffy paint (“I have a towel that is all yellow from cleaning it up”).
Tumblr media
10) new.wav - “Girls”
Alright, so stick with me on this: new.wav is the band, covering The 1975′s song “Girls” in the style of “Enema of the State”-era blink-182. Confused? Yeah, I was too, but check it out. Maybe more impressive than the arrangements/performance is how they were able to match blink’s production style -- no easy task.
9) Jay-Z - “Family Feud” (starts around 5:30; partial version)
Shawn Corey Carter wants to get right with everyone -- America, his peers, and, of course, within his own home. And though I may never understand the “New n****s is the reason I stopped drinkin’ Dos Equis” lyric, I’m on board with about all else. Similar to the Oso Oso record, “4:44″ is such an album that it feels unfair to single out a song to represent all of its parts. Stripped from the LP, the song does not hit as hard, but in the groove of the record, it’s the apex. And despite Hov seemingly desiring peace, the song does have more than a few call outs:
- “My stash can’t fit into Steve Harvey’s suit” - “And old n****s, y’all stop actin’ brand new / Like 2Pac ain’t have a nose ring too” - “Al Sharpton in the mirror takin’ selfies / How is him or Pill Cosby s’posed to help me?”
In the latter stages of his career, it’s hard to call everything Jay does ‘necessary’, but “4:44″ definitely checked that box.
8) Rozwell Kid - “Wendy’s Trash Can”
Vacillated all year between this one and “Michael Keaton” and literally flipped a penny my cousin Maggie loaned me to decide. “Wendy’s Trash Can” was heads.
7) The Weeknd - “Reminder”
This one got backdoored in as a latter single from The Weeknd’s 2016 album. One of my favorite parts about Abel is how little he has had to change to succeed. Sure, it’s silky smooth, but he hasn’t sacrificed the drugs, darkness, or ego that should offend (but doesn’t because it he pulls it off so well). After bragging early in the song about he won a kids award for singing about cocaine, he calls out peers for biting his sound, blings out his entire crew, and, well:
When I travel 'round the globe, make a couple mil' a show And I come back to my city, I fuck every girl I know
/clutches pearls
6) The Bombpops - “Be Sweet”
The guitar riff in this song is why I fell in love with punk music. Also, super cool story behind the lyrics:
“'Be Sweet' is an homage to our dear friend, the late Brandon Carlisle of the band Teenage Bottlerocket," vocalist Jen Razavi told AP. "Back in 2010, we were partying in a hotel room with Brandon and Ray Carlisle. There was a guitar in the room and Brandon was showing us an idea he had for a song. He had written it for his wife, but he told us we should play it and change the lyrics to 'getting rad with my boyfriend.' He wrote down all the lyrics on four sheets of hotel notepad paper. Since then, the melody and the chord progression were forgotten, but I still had the lyrics. So we wrote our own version of the song in the studio and used every single lyric that Brandon had written down.
Did I mention the video has an “In Bloom” feel? Stop reading, go listen.
5) Action Bronson - “Let Me Breathe”
Action Bronson ain’t givin’ nothin’ up. This is my pick for rap song of the year. It’s got TV brags (”I got two shows, I’m about to pitch another”), a tight chorus (”Let me breathe for a minute / White Range Rover blowin’ trees all in it”), and whimsy shit too (“Honey bouncin’ up and down, she nearly broke my dick”). Ghostface’s disciple is having more fun than just about anyone.
Tumblr media
4) Japandroids - “North East South West”
Only a Canadian band could get me to care this much about my own country. The Vancouver duo penned an Americana ode to the road -- but there’s a twist... they talk about their cities too. For every New Orleans, there’s a Toronto. For every California, a Vancouver.
Maybe they’ll be the ones to end all the border wars.
3) Alex Lahey - “Every Day’s The Weekend”
This is the only submission on the list I’d feel comfortable calling a perfect song. Relatable themes, a chorus that’ll tangle you up, f-bombs in all the right places, and every part maximized. She has this way of weaving between cool confidence and youthful insecurity, all in the matter of one verse.
2) Carly Rae Jepsen - “Cut To The Feeling”
When it comes to “Call Me Maybe” and its legacy, I do not fuck around. This song gets really, really, really close. Just watch this dude.
Queen Carly blessed us with another one. The chorus soars, arms go up, and clouds are your closest companions.
1) The Menzingers - “After The Party”
It's the little things my mind commits / To etch behind my eyelids
When this song dropped, my buddy Dave Rokos called it his favorite Menzos song ever. That felt like high praise, but man, he might be dead on. “After The Party” rips me in half with its lyrics of palpable desperation:
Like a kaleidoscope in vibrant hues I navigate around your tattoos Said you got that one on a whim when you were breaking up with him And that Matryoshka Russian doll That lines your shelf from big to small What a way to start anew To shed your skin and find the old you
If Carly’s chorus flies, this one holds us down like gravity. You feel everything, you feel nothing, you feel full yet voided, but after all of this -- the life, the party, the friends, the bars, the experiences, the nights, the lights, the fights, the city you live in -- it’s still her and you. Or him and you. Or whatever it is you come home to at the end, when it’s finally quiet.

TOP 40 METAL ALBUMS of 2019 Part 2 of 2 (#1-20)
Tumblr media
I’ve been making a Best Metal Albums of the Year list for nearly two decades, but 2019 is the 1st time I’ve done so as an official member of the METALHEADS Podcast. Last year the boys gave me a chance to share my top picks as a guest, and this year I was invited to be a permanent part of the show. It’s been an honor and a blast to discuss metal, interview musicians, and throw a few beers back every month with George, Jay, Will, John and Matt.
2019 was an incredible year for metal. We all spent a lot of time listening to hundreds of albums, honing our lists and cursing the metal gods every time a great contender had to be cut. But when we finally put down our scalpel blades and wiped away the blood, some damn selections were revealed.
My final choices for the top 20 metal albums are below. You can read my choices for #21-40 HERE.
Listen to me and the boys count down ALL 40 of our favorite LPs here:
METALHEADS Ep. 90 “Top 40 Metal Albums of 2019″
Tumblr media Tumblr media
20. Wilderun “Veil of Imagination”
Self-Released
This album is musical imagination science. Intricate. Breathtaking. It truly feels like the next evolutionary step in progressive metal.
Tumblr media
19. Cranial “Alternate Endings”
Moment of Collapse
An absolutely monstrous and aggressive sludge and post-metal album that occasionally dips its toe into sci-fi synth waters. One of the biggest sounding LPs I’ve heard this year.
Tumblr media
18. The Great Old Ones "Cosmicism"
Season of Mist
I’ve enjoyed The Great Old Ones for a while now, but this album takes their sound to a grand cosmic level. As immersive and visceral as the H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos it’s based on.
Tumblr media
17. Obsequaie "The Palms of Sorrowed Kings"
20 Buck Spin
Brilliant, melodic black metal mixed with the sounds of the Renaissance Faire on a summer day. This is classic, medieval literature in musical form and it’s glorious.
Tumblr media
16. Inculter "Fatal Visions"
Edged Circle Productions
I found this sinister thrash album a few weeks before the end of 2019 and it quickly left the other speed metal competitors in its blood-soaked wake. I didn’t hear this kind of malevolence in another trash band this year. And I very much dig malevolence.
Tumblr media
15. Adrift "Pure"
Temple of Torturous
An absolutely thunderous, progressive metal album, propelled by a jet-fuel fired bass sound, vicious black metal vocals and colossal riffs. A street painter in Madrid told me about this band several years ago and I've been thankful ever since.
Tumblr media
14. Vacivus “Annihilism”
Profound Lore
This is exemplary, modern death metal with merciless, unrelenting riffs, savage breakdowns and tremolo-picking tendrils that will wrap around your ear drums like a constrictor snake.
Tumblr media
13. Immortal Bird “Thrive On Neglect”
20 Buck Spin
No other band sounds like Immortal Bird. “Thrive on Neglect” is a soaring statement of pummeling death, black and grind metal, mixed with complex hardcore and progressive elements. An amalgamate maelstrom not to be missed.
Tumblr media
12. False “Portent”
Gilead Media
This album is pain and loss in musical form. Engrossing black metal with scope, skill, and gorgeously constructed songs that pour out aggression and emotion like blood from an open wound.
Tumblr media
11. Gatecreeper “Deserted”
Relapse
In a recent issue of Decibel Magazine, Gatecreeper referred to their sound as “Stadium Death Metal” and that’s an apt characterization of the band’s sound. They focus on writing huge, catchy hooks that audiences will remember. Mission accomplished.
Tumblr media
10. Falls of Rauros "Patterns in Mythology"
Gilead Media
This is amazing, black and post-metal alchemy with a big, cinematic feel. Gorgeous melodies, folk atmospherics and masterful riffs make "Patterns in Mythology” mesmerizing from start to finish.
Tumblr media
9. Blood Incantation "Hidden History of the Human Race"
Dark Descent
"Hidden History of the Human Race” is a cosmic roar of destruction that takes death metal to places it hasn’t been before. You’ll feel like you’re seeking out new life and new civilizations with every spin.
Tumblr media
8. Weeping Sores “False Confession”
I, Voidhanger
If you asked me to describe the kind of music Weeping Sores plays, I'd tell you progressive death-doom with violin. But that label falls way short of capturing the dynamic and colorfully devastating experiment of "False Confession." Surprising and phenomenal.
Tumblr media
7.  Tomb Mold "Planetary Clairvoyance"
20 Buck Spin
The cover to “Planetary Clairvoyance” features a bio-engineered alien cyclops gestating in an otherworldly basement of sludge and stardust. The music sounds pretty much exactly like that description. This album also solidifies Tomb Mold as one of the best metal bands on our planet.
Tumblr media
6. Arctic Sleep “Kindred Spirits”
Self Released
Dedicated to a beloved cat who passed away last year, “Kindred Spirits” is a stunning and emotional metal experience. In addition to the gorgeous, arresting music that deftly mixes doom, post-metal, ambient and a 90s rock sound that reminds me of Hum, Kieth D’s lyrics tug hard on my heart strings every time I listen. RIP Yoda.
Tumblr media
5. Vastum “Orificial Purge”
20 Buck Spin
“Orificial Purge” is brutal with some of the most memorable, galloping riffs of 2019 and a triumphal, modern aura to it that makes it stand apart in the thriving death metal field. I’ve plunged into this orifice often.
Tumblr media
4. Crypt Sermon "The Ruins of Fading Light"
Dark Descent
“The Ruins of Fading Light” is an album that has one boot in traditional metal and the other in doom. And both of those boots kick you in the gut with super-heavy impact. This album is thick with hooks, grooves and bombastic lead guitar solos, and the dynamic vocals by Brooks Wilson fill “The Ruins of Fading Light” with iron and emotion.
Tumblr media
3. Crowhurst "III"
Prophecy Productions
"III” is a sensory spice blend of sludgy black metal, noise, shoegaze and electronica that feels like it was mixed inside a dark and dangerous heart. A truly unique and special album.
Tumblr media
2. Cattle Decapitation "Death Atlas"
Metal Blade
“Death Atlas” is an apocalyptic masterpiece, featuring some of the sharpest and most sophisticated songwriting in 2019. The tracks are remarkably varied, delivering brutal riffs, theatrical and infectious vocals, and a real progressive sense of adventure. It’s also catchy as hell. “Death Atlas” demands repeat spins until you sing along and smile as the world ends.
Tumblr media
1. Atlantean Kodex "The Course of Empire"
Ván Records
A long while ago, my friend Garrett played the first Atlantean Kodex album, “The Golden Bough,” for me in his metal basement because he thought I'd like it. He was right, as G often is about the kind of metal that speaks to me. The band followed that album with “The White Goddess,” which was a critically-acclaimed, grand triumph. It took another six years for Atlantean Kodex to release their third LP because the band is so meticulous about the way they make music. To tell you it was was worth the long wait is an enormous understatement. “The Course of Empire” is one of the greatest, epic metal albums of all time. If Iron Maiden and Manowar were magically merged inside a medieval cauldron during the Battle of Helms Deep this would be the soundtrack. It’s an exceptionally crafted collection of songs, featuring mountainous guitar riffs, soaring choruses and some of the best vocals and lyrics in metal this year from Markus Becker. “The Course of Empire” has the kind of breadth and scope that make me feel like the ancient worlds of my dreams – worlds forged by blood and steel – are calling for me to pick up my sword and make them real once more.

How many bank accounts do you have? I have a checking account & a savings account, but they’re kind of intertwined. So I guess 1-2? Have you ever been falsely accused of starting drama? Yeah, middle school were FUN times.... How old are you? 28 Do you attend church regularly? Nah. I don’t come from a church-going family.  Have you ever found a song that describes your whole life? I personalize *everything* so I could find a way to attach myself to any song lyrics if I tried hard enough
What time did you wake up this morning? Sadly it was 6:17. Obviously, that was not by choice!  What time do you plan on waking up tomorrow morning? Tomorrow’s Sunday so I get to sleep in! We leave for brunch at 11:15 which means I can sleep as last as like 10:45 if I wanted.  What kind of car do you drive? I don’t drive. What kind of car would you like to have? Have you ever been to Dairy Queen? Yeah, fairly recently I had a frosted animal cracker Blizzard. It’s what dreams are made of!!! If so, what’s your favorite thing to eat from there? When I get actual food (which is rare) I get cheese curds How old did you turn on your last birthday? 28 Ever felt like falling apart? On a daily basis Have you ever been in an ambulance? Mhm  Do you tend to worry a lot? Again, on a daily fucking basis. Actually, more like a minute-to-minute basis. How old were you when you lost your first tooth? I have no clue Do you remember your first time on the internet? My first time-ever, no.  Which website do you email from? Yahoo for personal, Outlook for work. Do you enjoy receiving souvenirs? Oh yes! I love kitschy stuff. I hope the people in my life never shy away from buying me something out of fear that I’ll think it’s ‘tacky” because that has never been the case.  Do you get angry with people easily? I get a lot more irritated with people than I let on.  Do a lot of people dislike you or is it the other way around? Neither? I don’t think I’m a dislikable person and there aren’t many people I actively dislike.  Have you ever had the flu? Knock on wood, I don’t think so. This year would be especially bad for me to get it because my immediate assumption would be “coronavirus!” and then I’d convince myself I was dying. What about strep throat? Many, many times. Sore throats are my most frequent ailment Have you ever been to a psychologist? Yeah, although it’s been years. I see a LCSW now (and she’s phenomenal).  What’s the worst part about school? The worst parts of school as a kid/teenager were some of the social aspects. I had friends and I wasn’t necessarily bullied, but I still struggled to fit in. Or at least it felt that way, I guess. I excelled in academics though, so that was never an issue for me. Do you normally have a lot of homework, if you’re still in school? When was your last vacation? New Orleans last December  Would you ever consider going on a cruise? ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT. You couldn’t even pay me.  What did you last buy from the store? A bottle of Sprite that I thought was a normal 20 oz but turned out to be a whole damn liter. The worst part though is that I still drank *all* of it over the course of my workday.  Would you say you enjoy being single or in a relationship more? I was always perfectly comfortable being single but now I could NEVER imagine my life without Glenn.
Do you try to stay busy a lot? No, but I really should be for the sake of my anxiety. Something something about idle hands or whatever...  Do you lie a lot? Nah. My face is too readable and my conscience is too guilty. Do you still act childish most of the time? Not most of the time, but I certainly have my moments.  Did you ever enjoy gym class? Not ever  What is your biggest insecurity? Where do I begin?  Have you ever painted a room alone? I painted most of my bedroom myself as a teenager, but my Dad came in and did a lot of tweaking & final touches.  Speaking of which, when did you last paint your room? That was the last time I did so.... it’s been a while.  What’s for dinner tonight? It’s only 8 am so I have no clue. Probably something simple since it’s a Saturday night and Glenn & I both have plans. Do you ever drink alcohol? Maybe a little too much Have you ever had a terrible hangover? Oh God, I’m notorious for my wicked hangovers! I’m trying to be more conscious about the type of drinks I choose now though. Wine is BAD NEWS.  Do you ever get migraines? Thankfully, no. Although they run in my family so I feel like it’s only a matter of time before I start experiencing them  Do you know how to garden? Nope. I always think it’s something I’d be interested in until I consider all the manual labor it’d require and I’m like “nah” What was the last thing you plugged into an outlet? My phone charger Do people consider you to be a funny person? Yes, and it’s one of my favorite compliments. Although I don’t know if it’s that I’m a naturally funny person, or if funny things just *happen* to me and I’m good at relaying the stories.  Do you have any bad habits? Worrying, obsessing, over-thinking, over-drinking.... should I stop here or continue?  Do you like children? I love them & I really think I have a gift with kids. I can’t wait to have my own someday.  If not, why is this? What is your favorite snack? Chips & dip or cheese & crackers. Basically any cheap “party food” is up my alley. Do you own any gaming systems? Nope, but Glenn has a billion.  How old were your parents when they had you? Mid-late 20s?  Is there a big age difference between you and the person you like? He is 12 years older although it hardly feels that way. The only time our age gap becomes apparent is when one of us makes a pop culture reference that goes undetected. Like the time I said “No, this is Patrick” and he, in all seriousness, asked ‘Who’s Patrick?”  Do you trashtalk people a lot? I try not to but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t ever. Sometimes it’s just too easy.  What is the most amusing thing on the internet, in your opinion? Twitter is a goldmine, especially in the current political climate.  Does the future excite you or scare you? It used to scare me a whole lot more but now that I have Glenn, I’m less afraid and more excited Do you try to spend a lot of time with family? Yes, although I haven’t seen them too much recently. I’ve seen Glenn’s family more than my own How often do you shower? Every 1-2 days unless I’m in a depressive slump What would you say is your favorite genre of music? Typically alternative rock with soft rock/pop rock elements Do you need to clean your bedroom? Not really. I’m good about keeping it tidy. Although I do have a popcorn bowl and a water glass sitting on my bedside table right now that I’ll have to take care of when I get home What do you plan on doing with the rest of your life? Who the hell knows!! Do you enjoy Chinese food? In very small doses, yes. When I eat Chinese food, I’m set for several months. What is your favorite movie from the nineties? Clueless!  Which decade were you born in? The 90′s  Are you good at giving advice to people? I don’t think so. I don’t dish out advice as much as I just allow my friends to vent. I am a great listener though! How many huge secrets do you have? Hmm... I can’t say I have many at all anymore How many people know these secrets? How many times a day do you brush your teeth? At least once but usually twice Do you ever floss? LOL I couldn’t even tell you the last time I did... Have you ever been in a long-term relationship? I am currently Is there anyone out there who makes you feel completely useless? Thankfully, no. I have good people around me.  Do you like texting or calling people more? TEXTING. There are few instances where I’m ok with a phonecall. Otherwise, everything else can be done via text.  What’s your favorite band? The Killers Do you have a lot of friends? Yeah Have you ever painted something and been impressed by it? I guess. I’m not artistic but I’m kind of crafty, and I’ve painted a few cute trinkets before.  Would you rather go out to eat or stay in? Going out to eat is one of my favorite activities! And I’m so sad that Covid has (somewhat) robbed us of that little pleasure.  When did you last babysit, if ever? It’s been months :( Yet another pleasure stolen by Covid!  Do you have any younger siblings? A younger sister  Have you ever thought of someone as useless? I don’t think so Have you ever considered bleaching your hair? I dye it but I have no need to bleach it as it’s already very light Do you drink vitamin water? Oh man, I haven’t even seen it in years! It was super trendy when I was a young teen though. I remember putting Vitamin Water gif/sticker things in my Myspace bio.... THAT’S how old I am! Are there any old movies you absolutely love? Of course Have you ever had a Big Mac before? Nope Do you think you attract the opposite sex at a reasonable rate? What is defined as “reasonable?”  Where is your favorite place to travel? I could have fun almost anywhere. As long as there’s good food & drink!  What is your goal for the next few months? I’m really hoping to get on an antidepressant of some kind and then once my mental health’s a bit more in check, there are a few other goals on my mind.  Can you count to ten in another language other than your own? Polish & French  Do you own a lot of shoes? Nah, I’m not a shoe girl Have you ever played on a sports team before? Soccer as a kid. It didn’t go well If you have, what was that sport and when? ^^ Have you ever filed a lawsuit on someone? Nope Do you think you’re a good singer? I’m not bad but I’m not a “good singer” quote un-quote.  Would you rather wear jeans or sweatpants? Sweatpants are of course the comfier and therefore better option, but I never wear them in public.  Do you think you have a good sense of style? I have a good eye for style I just never have the energy (or confidence) to wear what I want. Oh, money is a major issue too. Ha!  Do you enjoy reading often? It’s my lifelong favorite hobby. Sadly I went through a mild depression during quarantine and didn’t pick up a book once. I’m making up for lost time now though. Have you ever had a deadly illness? No, thank God  Ever had food-poisoning before? Not that I’m aware of  Where did you last eat dinner at? Moe’s? Have you ever shot a gun before? Yep

7 Tinder Profile Tips and Writing Hacks
Sometimes coming up with your Tinder profile bio can feel like torture. It’s like when you’re at an interview and someone says, “So tell us a little bit about yourself.” It’s such a huge, broad question that it’s hard to know how to answer it or where to start. But it doesn’t have to be quite so hard…
I’ve worked in dating apps for over five years (full disclosure, I work for Zoosk a subscription dating app) and during that time I’ve written and given tons of advice to people looking to write thoughtful, genuine profiles that really show who they are. But today I’m not going to do that.
Today I’m going to give you a bunch of Tinder profile tips that will help you write a decent dating profile as quickly as possible. Because, hey, I get it… Sometimes you just want to get it over with. And sometimes, in order to be effective, your profile doesn’t have to be a work of art, it just needs to get the job done.
Here are some Tinder profile tips and writing hacks to create a good bio, fast:
1. Greater than/less than profile Want to create a good profile quickly? The greater than/less than trick might be for you. Simply list out sets of things you could debate with someone, and say which you think is better. This shows your personality but also gives a bunch of ready-to-go conversation topics that makes it easier for people to break the ice and send you a message after you match.
Examples: Marcus, 24 tacos < burritos Friday nights out > Thursday nights out National league > American league Radiolab > Serial I’m just sayin’ Emily, 27 breakfast for dinner < pizza for breakfast the movie > the book (so sue me) sunrise < sunset coffee > life Your thoughts?
2. First and last profile Here’s another no fuss profile hack—first and lasts. Let people know the last movie you saw, book you read, person you talked to, place you drove, or time you embarrassed yourself. It gives a fast but realistic view of who you are now. You can flip it too. Instead of saying lasts, get nostalgic instead and say your firsts—first date, first word, first job, or first car. The more specific and oddball the better.
Examples: Daniel, 21 First… Job: U12 soccer referee Word: momma (ya ya, I’m a mama’s boy) Album I Bought: Michael Jackson’s BAD (and it was on tape)
Kiss: Amanda Butler. Front seat of my ‘95 Grand Am after the Sophomore’s only dance. Dave Matthews was playing. (But not Crash… I would never.)
Tiffany, 25 Last… Place I visited: Zion (it was amazing) Book I read: Decoded by Jay Z (also amazing) Time I yelled at someone: In the bleachers at Fenway
Time I cried: Watching that YouTube of the lion who gets reunited with its trainer (oh man, gets me every time)
3. About Me/About You profile Quick, easy, and to the point—the About Me/About You profile is where you list details about yourself, coupled with details about the type of person you’re into.
Eric, 30 About Me: Likes fishing, gives great speeches at weddings, and plays a mean harmonica. About You: Eats adventurously, likes road trips, can talk about books for hours.
Tatiana, 27 About Me: Likes poop jokes, can stay out late on a school night, and isn’t afraid to talk politics on a first date.
About You: Tolerates my poop jokes, doesn’t take himself too seriously, and likes a healthy debate.
4. Three simple things profile Another list format to play around with is the three simple things profile. Just share three completely random things about yourself. And hey, you can even get a little braggy. You’re allowed to talk yourself up a bit in your dating profile.
Dan, 23 I love roller coasters but the pirate ship ride completely terrifies me. I once backpacked around Lake Tahoe in 13 days. When I was 14 I got a concussion swing dancing.
What about you?
Maria, 24 I hate flowers. You’ll never have to buy me flowers. Potatoes chips however… Not gonna lie, pretty good at pub trivia. I’ve even won the big money a couple times. Guilty pleasures: neighborhood drama, fancy cupcakes, and binge watching Law & Order. Dun duun!
5. One smartass comment profile There’s something intriguing about a profile with a single comment that catches attention. But writer beware, the single smartass comment profile can definitely backfire. It has to be good or you’ll just come off as a, well, jackass instead of a smartass.
Mallory, 30 All you need to lure me into your car is wine and pizza.
Eric, 27 Funny, handsome, and stupid.
Amy, 23 Dogs love me.
Malcolm, 32 Looking at my phone searching for a reason to stop looking at my phone.
Gina, 27 You can’t play hard and work hard. If you say that, you’re not doing either hard enough. (I don’t work very hard.)
Meng, 25 Whisper sweet NPRs to me.
Talia, 34 I like my artsy with a little bit of fartsy.
Obscure references profile Have a quote from a movie or TV show you love? A lyric from a song or an inside joke only someone who’s into the same random stuff as you would know? Use it. It’s fast, shows off your personality, and is an instant conversation starter.
Lily, 22 Last vacation was to see the basement of the Alamo. Wasn’t what I thought it was going to be but I had a big adventure.
Ted, 26 I’m just a boy, standing in front of a bunch of people on an app, and asking them to love me.
Natalie, 29 The last guy who swiped left on me aged so quickly he shriveled up into an old man skeleton thing before he turned into dust and died a swift yet horrifying death. He chose poorly.
Jeet, 27 I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
7. Fake reviews profile Another Tinder profile trick you may have seen is the fake reviews profile. Similar to book or movie blurbs (“Two thumbs up!”)  the fake review profile let’s you share a bit about yourself and might just make someone crack a smile.
Amy, 24 I’m pretty great but don’t listen to me, read my reviews: “Amy is a hard working, conscientious student.” – my 10th grade English teacher “I’d highly recommend her for any position.” – my first boss “I laughed until I cried.” – my ex boyfriend
Jordan, 28 “This one’s got real potential.” – My 90+ next door neighbor “Excellent incisors. And he flosses.” – Dr. Dan, my dentist “Better than a hallelujah” – Amy Grant
“He can make an Amy Grant reference, and still come off as masculine and authoritative. I don’t know how he does it.” – My good friend Abe
8. List of likes profile This is probably the most common profile type, but if you add the right details and stay away from obvious things like hiking, traveling, and your friends, listing our your likes can be an effective way to get a quick but effective profile.
Jad, 31 The Discworld series, girls with glasses, playing hookie to go to a baseball game, and dinners with friends that end in late nights talking and laughing over a table strewn with the dirty dishes none of us are getting up to wash.
Emily, 26 Making fun of people who do crossfit, net-back hats, first runs, the first sip of beer after a long day, and coming home to my dog every night.
By day/by night profile Nobody is any one thing. You aren’t just a school teacher or an accountant, and you aren’t just someone who likes to BBQ or play softball with your friends. The by day/by night profile is a way to show two sides of yourself, what you do for work and what you do for fun. It’s kind of like the mullet of dating profiles. Business in the front, party in the back.
Tim, 22 9th grade history teacher by day. Semi-pretentious craft beer aficionado by night.
Kaylee, 27 Product designer by day, cyberpunk and avant garde enthusiast by night.
Brett, 23 Management/marketing consultant by day, amature mixologist and professional cat cuddler by night.
Heather, 25 Software engineer by day, even bigger nerd by night. Love anime, board games (I kill at The Settlers of Catan), and obscure music nobody else seems to listen to.
As you work on your Tinder profile, remember that it’s important but it also goes along with your photos. If you’ve got a stellar set of photos who explain who you are, your bio doesn’t have to work so hard. If you’re having problems getting matches, you might want to take the time to make sure your description and your photos are on point. After all, when it comes to online dating, your profile is your first impression. So have fun with it and make a good one.

Carmen Toth - Toronto Singer/Songwiter on Taking Risks & "Safety Net”
May 16, 2018
LISTENUPINDIE! spent some time with Canadian indie artist Carmen Toth on the heels of her new EP "SAFETY NET-- produced by Juno-winning producer Derek Downham--"a take on 80’s pop, full of shimmering synths and catchy hooks but grounded in brutally honest lyrics" (afeedbackloop.ca).
Carmen recently spent some time with Across The Board as guest of the cover series “Pick Up & Play” and was featured in the episode: WALKAWAY by Weaves:
youtube
MEET CARMEN TOTH:
LUI: What has been the driving force behind the creation of your new album SAFETY NET?
TOTH: I had some pretty big life events happen in recent years and I wrote songs about them. I basically had to rebuild my life: I lost my long-time job of nearly 12 years, got divorced after being married for 11 years (and together for nearly 14), and also had my heart broken in two different attempted relationships after my marital separation. I had to focus on things that brought me joy in order to survive. Music was one of the few things that kept me going. So when I finally received my divorce settlement, I chose to make the album I always wanted to make and give my songs the production they deserved. It’s funny how grief and stress can make you brave and take risks. It felt like a “now or never” thing: I used that raw pain to propel and motivate me. Safety Net is the biggest thing I have ever done musically and artistically.
Tumblr media
LUI: Who do you see as your musical influences—past AND present?
TOTH: As a young child, I really enjoyed female-vocal dancy-pop-rock like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston, the Bangles and Belinda Carlisle. As a young teen, I was obsessed with Paula Abdul and Janet Jackson. I loved their videos, tried to mimic their dance moves and clothing (I actually wore a key on a ring in my ear like Janet Jackson did) and I had posters of them all over my bedroom. Later teens and early 20s my musical taste started to go all over the place. I remember playing Bijork’s album Post, Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, and Green Day’s Dookie a lot. I was into dance/club music like The Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, but then I also discovered classic rock and progressive rock like Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, and alternative rock like Tori Amos and Death Cab for Cutie. More recently, I have been enjoying artists like Lana Del Ray, Banks, Halsey, Muna and Canadian bands Parallels and Weaves. I love that the 80s sound has made its way back into mainstream music lately. I get told a lot that I sound like Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks and Cyndi Lauper, and considering I have been a fan of all three for the better part of my life, that makes sense.
LUI: What is your song writing process?
TOTH: I have no set formula. I have songs I wrote in 5 minutes like Minishka, and then I have songs that took me years to complete like Distance. For some songs the words come first, like with Writing Roses, which I wrote at work in my office at the time. But with most songs the melody/music comes first while I am practicing my guitar or keyboard, and I just start singing words I think up on the spot and I see what sticks. I find with me that songs are impossible to force out. I need to be inspired with a feeling. The closest thing I have to a process is practicing my instruments and writing in my journal (I have kept one since I was 14). If I am lucky the day that I practice music and/or write words, something will come out that sparks a new song.
LUI: We all agree that the music industry continues to be in flux—moving from physical to digital media, moving from record stores to streaming sites. What are some of the future trends you see coming to the industry that artists and listeners alike might encounter?
TOTH: It’s all about the online content and the creative journey these days. Fans are becoming part of the process in making the music because they can now watch it all happen in real time on their devices, versus just going to a store and buying the album when it’s complete. Online live streaming is becoming a big thing for indie artists as well. Many do a live-streamed live show and then they edit the content into clips to use for promotion later. I see unique branded merch as a big area of growth in the coming years too, because if you’re not selling CDs, you have to sell something else. For example, the band Weaves sells their own special weird blue lipstick at their shows. I also see fan VIP experiences and packages as another huge area of growth, like if you buy a concert ticket, you can “add on” things like a “meet & greet,” merch, downloads, etc. More and more indie artists are starting to do that, and I’ll bet there will be some very creative incentives that artists think up in the years to come.
LUI: As a musician and a listener, what do you look for in indie bands that excites you, makes you want to listen, become a fan, what inspires you?
TOTH: A catchy sound that makes me want to dance and an emotional connection to the actual content or lyrics. It always seems to come down to those two things for me.
LUI: What is ahead for Carmen Toth??
My plans and goals for my music right now are to get Safety Net played in as many places as possible (radio, podcasts, blogs, syncing), play more live shows, apply to more exposure/performance opportunities, tour for the first time, create more online content, become a better musician by learning more songs/techniques, create more new material and make more professional and fan connections. All that being said, life always finds a way to surprise me, so who really knows? But I can pretty much promise that if something impacts me emotionally, and something surely will, it will come out later in song
Carmen’s Bio from www.CarmenToth.com:
Carmen Toth is a Toronto singer-songwriter with an alternative pop sound reminiscent of the 80s and 90s. Her unique voice and relatable lyrics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Stevie Nicks, Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush. She plays acoustic guitar and keyboard, and often uses a looper for solo shows. Carmen came on the live music scene at an open mic in 2002, steadily working on her craft ever since. To date, she has released 3 EPs and one single: “Potional” in 2004, “Social Potion” in 2011, the holiday single “This Christmas I’m Giving You Love” in 2017 and most recently, “Safety Net” in January, 2018, produced by Juno winner Derek Downham.

2017.
That was pretty sweet, right?
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk.
Well, at least we all made it.
And we’re all right here.
Quick strategy for ‘18:
There was a recent interview with Bjork, while she was promoting her new album, Utopia, where she was asked how she dealt with the insanity of the world.  She said she creates a small bubble around herself, and focuses on filling it with everything she loves. (Not, like, a literal bubble, btw….I should clarify because it is Bjork.)  Nah...but she just focuses on herself and her immediate surroundings, and creates her own world of the things that matter to her... love family music...and does her best to not let the outside awfulness in. Create your own little bubble world.  I really liked that.  That’s all you can really do these days.  What’s important to you?  What do you love doing?  Cool, create a small bubble and concentrate like a motherfucker on just those things. Tune everything else out.  Easier said than done, especially when the outside bullshit is directly affecting your life, but still seems like a pretty good goal for operating in the world today.  Work to create your best bubble.  Keep filling it with what you love.  Turn off the bullshit.  And pretty soon...this is your life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n0Ps1KWVU0
I’ve been filling my bubble with a lot of music this year.
And it’s time to step on in this bub ya’ll.
Because it is time to present to you…
WhatWhat’s best music of the year.
Also, RESIST.
Personal Music Highlights of 2017
1. Movement Detroit (see you again soon).
Highest of lights was Function wiping clean 90 minutes of my memory at the RA stage under Hart Plaza (went up to him afterwards, looked him directly in the eyes and told him he was number 1.  He gave me a head nod.  I was content.)  Check out his album, ‘Recompiled,’ which was released this year.  Respect the master.
Runner Up: Walking into a club at 3am with Eddie while Moodymann dropped the Beastie Boy’s Paul Revere.  An entire club of Detroit techno heads went bananas and everyone in the club sang every word.  That is what it means to be a good DJ.  First time I saw him and it was everything I needed.  Played everything from D’angelo, to MK to Ro James...to The Beastie Boys).  Talking shit into the mic all night.  Doing it all using iPod earbuds.  Thank you for being exactly you, Moodymann.  (P.S. There was a thing this year where super cool internet DJ chat room people took issue with Moodymann playing Kings of Leon, Sex On Fire, at a festival.  You realize you’re criticizing Moodymann right?  You’re criticizing MOODYMANN.  Immediately fuck yourself.  You’re what’s wrong with everything.  You are banished from my bubble.  Also, for the record, ‘Sex On Fire’ fucking rules.  Drink more cheap beer and figure out your life.

3. Solange in Portland
Made me realize Solange is actually cooler than Beyonce.
And Beyonce is...Beyonce.
Thus,
Solange is really, really fucking cool.
4. Solar in an Oregon orchard
Me full zenith.
Shout out and thank you, OV.
5. Queens in MSG
Thank you Ian.
Thank you for existing, Queens.
6. My wife singing Post Malone’s Rockstar acapella in our house without knowing the lyrics.
Shout out to legal Portland things!
Also, biggest surprise of the year: I really like Post Malone.  As an artist and as a person.
And then...
7. Black Thought.

Life lesson: You can’t do this without grinding for 30 years.
Best Music Videos of 2017:
2 Chainz ‘Trap Check’ was a lock for this.  A LOCK.
Then came ‘The Gate’ (see intro paragraph).
Didn’t realize the drug DMTMDMA existed, so at least 2017 gave us that!
Anyway,  #BjorkBubbleGoals fo real fo real.
(I’m going to get a tattoo on my face and become a Soundcloud rapper and my first song will be me mumbling “Bjork Bubble Goals, Bjork Bubble Goals, Bjork Bubble Goals” a thousand times over a pretty awesome beat.  Gonna be siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
Runner up:
2 Chainz: Trap Check
2 Chainz is a superhero.

Best Albums Of 2017:
1) Fever Ray: Plunge
The Queen Mother returned when we needed her most.
I could write a whole bunch about this but I advise you to instead just read all the interviews she did for this album.
She is revealing and honest.
She is my favorite artist.
And the album’s theme of sexual freedom also made me ok with a sexual fantasy I’ve been having.
It involves Fever Ray and Mike Pence, locked in dark room for 24 hours, with only jars of Trader Joe’s Coconut oil.
GET FREE MIKE!
WE KNOW YOU NEED IT AND IT’S OK.
Also, can we please unite the two most powerful natural forces on the planet and get a Bjork / Fever Ray SUPER SLIMEY collab album before 2020?
Help me put that energy out there and let’s create an actual vortex.
P.S. this album also contains the clear winner for 2017 lyric of the year:
“Your lips, warm and fuzzy, I want to run my fingers up your pussy.”
-Fever Ray, “To The Moon And Back”
Force of nature.
2) Honey Dijon: The Best Of Both Worlds
The music genre I was most obsessed with this year was Chicago House.  I felt the need to go as deep as I could into the origins and classics...where so much of the music I love today started.  Damn.  What a time and sound.  Deep in the exploration, something was dropped on the very top of the pile.  Honey Dijon’s, “The Best Of Both Worlds.”  Honey Dijon is a super real DJ vet from Chicago and just created a beautiful album that is just House music to the bone.  So quality, sounds so warm and good.  Only she could make this.  If you’ve never listened to Chicago House (what are you doing with your life, btw?), this is a great starting point.  Note to self: I need to see Honey Dijon DJ in the next 3 months.
3) Ellen Allien: Nost
Ellen Allien has never played it safe and has always pushed it, hard.  If you really like electronic music you should listen to her earlier albums, namely, Berlinette, Thrills and Orchestra Of Bubbles (collab with Apparat).  A pure techno head, who just BRINGS it on this album.  A review described it as spending hours in Berghain and that’s a decent description.  DARK AND HARD.  If you can’t lose your mind in a club for 3 days, you can use this album to pretend you are, while doing things like walking through airports, riding bikes fast, and sitting at your workplace desk.  There’s a track on this album named “Mind Journey,” and ALSO a track named “Jack My Ass.”  What more do you want people!?
4) All The Good Rap Albums:
2 Chainz: Pretty Girls Like Trap Music; Future: FUTURE; A$AP Ferg: Still Striving; Quality Control: Control The Streets Volume 1; 21 Savage & Offset: Without Warning; A$AP Mob: Cozy Tapes Vol 2: Too Cozy
Don’t be a Joe Budden old head.  If you say new rap is wack, you ain’t listening...at all.  Everyone of these albums has at least 3 absolute bangers.  God I love this shit so much.  Metro Boomin is producer of the year, again and again.  Beats are so fucking hard.  Also, for the record, Migos are incredible.  The goal of rap is sounding the coolest.  And they sound pretty fucking cool.  (ALSO, they provided the ad lib of the century: https://youtu.be/yBXO_hiNWUc “Ostrich, Ostrich, Ostrich, yee.”)    My 17 Rap Songs of 2017:
5) LCD: American Dream
There was a generational sea change across the board this year.  When Arcade Fire missteps then doesn’t sell out live shows?  And they were/are the best band going?  What?  How fickle are we now (me included)?  Things are too fast.  We’re getting old.  When this album was coming out it made me nervous.  I really needed it to be good.  Proof of life.  They delivered.  No crew can bring it like this.  They stand alone.  And you know what?  Getting old is fucking badass.  What’s more hardcore?  Just keep making stuff and pushing HARD and no one can f with you.  There’s really no other way.
6) War On Drugs: A Deeper Understanding
Me.  Music for Sunday afternoons.  Music for time with great friends and family.  For when you’re driving alone in the dark.  I love you guys.  KP and I saw them live a few months ago.  Holy shit.  Just 9 really talented and experienced dudes onstage JAM ROCKING.  Portland was standing and cheering, I was violently air drumming.  Love forever.
7) Four Tet: New Energy
Proves this guy is pushing it forward and on another plateau.  He could have just made some quality beats and it would have been satisfying.  Instead he made ambient spiritual desert in winter night music.  Happy we get to listen to this guy create things.
8) Lil B: Black Ken
When Lil B tweets, he signs every tweet: “-Lil B.”
He also takes a screenshot of every tweet and posts it to Instagram, often times again captioning the post, “-Lil B.”
Earlier this month, he tweeted this:
"WHAT UNIVERSITY WHATS TO LET LIL B COME LEARN AT YOUR INSTITUTION? IM VERY INTERESTED IN SCIENCE AND BIO AND ALSO NUERO SCIENCE I WANT TO OFFER MORE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND GLOBALLY AS WELL AS ANIMALS WHAT UNIVERSITY WILL ACCEPT ME? I DID NOT FINISH HIGH SCHOOL!!!"
Very quickly, schools like Pennsylvania State University, the University of Oregon, Butler University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Texas at Arlington and Brandeis University tweeted at him, providing offers and links to applications.
His response:
“SO FAR PENN STATE, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, LSU HAVE ALL SHOWN INTEREST IN EDUCATING LIL B !!!!! IM SO HONORED!! SERIOUSLY FOR THEM SHOWING THAT THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE !! LETS GO! I WANNA LEARN!!! - Lil B”
He then tweeted exclusively about guys and girls getting “Mudd Butt” for at least 48 hours straight.
Lil B has more personality than all humans.
Thank you, Based God.
(Anyway, this album is so good and fun and was the most hip hop thing that happened this year...until Black Thought opened his mouth.)
9) Nick Hoppner: Work
Mature master aspirations.
10) Thundercat: Drunk
I listened to this on a sunny day this year with a chocolate or two, and just remember laughing a lot.  I want to hug this guy and invite him to a party where everyone is wearing sweatpants.  So talented, makes the world more fun.
11) Karen Gwyer: Rembo
Discovered this recently.  How is this exactly what I’m looking for?
12) DJ Python: Dulce Compania
Read a review that described this album as “ambient reggaeton.”  And somehow, with DJ Python, that’s a great thing.  I put this album on as I walked into work and it helped me.
13) Kendrick Lamar: Damn
Wait, this album came out this year?
Also, I’ve failed you because I haven’t listened to this album backwards yet, as Kendrick revealed, but, fuck it, I’m on vacation so I’m going to do that RIGHT NOW.
Best Tracks Of 2017:
Here are 70 of my favorites.
Special call outs below.
1. Track of the year - Cardi B: Bodak Yellow
In the year where women rose up and refused to accept male bullshit, this, fittingly, was the soundtrack.  What gets me everytime is that she’s just rapping her ASS off.  Also learned that saying “BLOODy shoes” is consistently really fun.  ALSO, when she was on Fallon recently she was basically Rosie Perez on Jeopardy in the movie ‘White Men Can’t Jump,’ and that just warmed my entire body.  (and....the beat is the beat).  Final score: Undeniable.
2. Runner up - LCD Soundsystem: How Do You Sleep?
Hardest diss record of the year!  This song sounds like ten thousand angry miles.  Or, exactly like 2017!  Runner up for lyric of the year: “You warned me about the cocaine, then dove straight in.”  He makes you feel all of it.  I want to hear this played live.
3. Four Tet: Two Thousand Seventeen
From my Sunday morning album.  A mental womb.
4. Hercules & Love Affair: Are You Still Certain? (feat. Mashrou’ Leila)
Shout out to Peter who played this during a b2b sesh in my basement which was the first time I heard it.  A week later I played it as the closing track of a DJ set in a wonderful outdoor space, during the day, in the Sun (Zekefest!).  Those are the moments.
5. Thundercat: Them Changes
I started more DJ sets this year playing this song.  There is never a bad time to play this song.
6. Honey Dijon: Thunda (feat. John Medelson)
Soul.
7. Ellen Allien: Innocence
My favorite track off of Nost.  Play it as loud as you can in a pitch black room.
8. Fever Ray: Mustn’t Hurry
Hard to chose one, but this one split a good divide between the sound of the first album and second album.  Oh yeah-eee-yeah-eee-aah.  Fever Ray is actual magic.
9. The War On Drugs: Holding On
I am, because of you.
10. 2 Chainz: Trap Check
Start your workouts properly.
11. Sufjan Stevens: Visions Of Giedeon
See the movie, “Call Me By Your Name.”Be crushed by this song forever.
12. Lil B: Berkeley
Play this song loud on a Summer Saturday with your shirt off.  God damn it this shit is so hip hop.  Just on his straight positive.  “We in downtown Berkley, I’m not rich, but I’m workin’.”  Thank you, Based God.
13. Kamasi Washington: Truth
Pretty fucking important.
14. Nicola Cruz: Tzantza
My wife and I went to Hawaii on vacation this year, first time I’d been.  We went to this place.  Very dope spot.  They were playing this on a good sound system and it stopped me in my tracks. It will always make me think of a Hawaiian vacation.  And my love of low bpm dance music.
15. Travis Scott: Butterfly Effect
This song actually is 4am in Hidden Hills.  Everyone on incredible drugs. Perfect weather.  Slight cool breeze at 3am to remind you how high you are.  Then Travis Scott pulls up to Kanye’s house in a space ship, and the party continues.
16. ASAP Ferg: Plain Jane
Flipping Three Six’s lyrics from “Slob on my knob, like corn on the cob,” into “Ride with the mob, Alhamdulillah” is the reason Ferg is the Hood Pope.
17. LCD Soundsystem: American Dream
Closing time.
Random Afterword:
Recently learned that, before Motorhead, Lemmy was in a band called Hawkwind.  Did some searching on Hawkwind.  Christmas indeed.  One of their albums is called ‘Warrior On The Edge Of Time,’ and their live album is called ‘Louder Than The Universe.’  On these, the last days of 2017, I recommend drinking some cold beers, cranking Hawkwind up to one million, removing your shirt, and begining preparations for 2018.  Go harder than a young Lemmy, young people. 2017, peace. 2018, lessgo!

music in review..
Sam Smith  |  In The Lonely Hour
Author Bio:
Hello music critics, my name is Madison Byrd and I am a Sophomore at the University of Michigan. I would necessarily consider myself “musically inclined” but I do have a knack for calling a hit when I hear one. My love for music started when my sister and I were gifted a hot pink CD player and Hilary Duff CD for Christmas in our pre-teen era. There are songs that we simply enjoy for their jiving beat but more often than not we connect with music because of how it’s story resonates with our own. In my opinion, a good song tells a story that its listeners can latch onto and has a varying degree of intellect found in it’s lyrics. Money On My Mind: This track has an interesting spin on it. Like many artists do, the title of this track is misleading at first glance. An outsider might assume that this song tells the story of a money hungry artist who is hustling all for the dough. But most could gather that Sam is telling us about the heart and soul behind his work. The actual phrasing of the song is, “I don't have money on mind, I do it for the love”, quite the contrary from track title. I applaud Sam for making this the very first song on his premiere album, getting it out there from the start that he is producing music because he has a God given nature to do so. No cash money needed. Good Thing: On this track Sam is telling us about the sort of relationship you get into because it feels good, not because it’s good for you. You're in it for the butterflies you get when you're near the other person, the rush you feel when you brush hands, the tension that rises when you're apart, and the jealousy that ensues when they're flirting with someone else. This all feels good but not for long. Sam says, “too much of a good thing won’t be good for long”, but all the while admitting that it’s not going to be easy quitting something that feels so right; he imagined it would be a relationship that would fade into the background of his life, something he wouldn't have to address head on.Stay With Me: This track soared to the top of the charts, in both the US and UK,  when it was released. This being the first track released from this album, it was also the first time that many had ever heard Sam Smith’s magical vocals. I believe that this song and the debut of such an artist caught people's attention because of his mature male voice and the similarities he shares with Aaron Neville from the 90’s. There had been a drop off since Neville in this category of male vocalists, a category of smooth and soulful singing. Speaking of soulful singing, the background choir that joins Sam in the chorus half way through the song really separated his sound from other artists’ in 2014. But back to its meaning… Sam sings about someone he just met who isn't exactly his soulmate but could very well keep him company for at least a night. Sam sings, “guess it’s true I'm not good at one night stand, but I still need love cause I’m just a man”, in other words he’s not asking this person to fulfill all his sexual fantasies in one night, “it’s not love it’s clear to see”, but rather just stay close to him, stay with him. Leave Your Lover: This track is widely known to be a reflection of a Sam Smith’s personal love life. Because this song can be perceived as Sam asking a girl to leave a guy or Sam asking a guy to leave a guy, this song can relate to all different make ups of intimate relationships. At the release of this song, Sam Smith was said to be in a relationship with a man so many of his fans took this song as Sam singing to his boyfriend. But in any sort of relationship, this song speaks to the girl or guy who is longing for their lost lover to return to them. Life has lead them astray and they wish it to not be so. I’m Not the Only One: Alright… probably one of the saddest music videos of all time. In this song, the stage is set for the picture perfect cheating scandal in a suburban Hollywood marriage. Much of where we, as the listeners, get our take on this song comes from the heart wrenching music video that was released shortly after the track’s debut in the U.S. Starring Dianna Agron and Chris Messina as the couple having trouble in paradise, it becomes alarmingly clear that the husband is cheating on his wife with some saloon girl down the street and the wife knows full well and is shattered by this reality. Like most relationships where the guy is cheating on the girl, there is a certain level of disbelief in the girl at first, not wanting her fairytale to be ruined. But at some point she has to come to terms with the fact that she knows “she’s not the only one.”  I’ve Told You Now: This song describes the sort of toxic relationship that always ends in a brawl but is reconciled by one person who admits they can’t live without the other person. But it’s interesting that the lyric choice for the chorus is “I’ve told you now”, but what is being told is never revealed. It sort of gives the illusion that there is a very stubborn person who finally has to admit they need the other person in their life, not by saying it but by merely reentering their life, uninvited. Like I Can: Continuing on with the theme of “winning back your lost love” Sam has a plead for his lover on this track, to stop looking for someone else to love and realize that no one can love him/ her like he can. Sam admits that other people may seem enticing and could very well be their “saviour” but no one knows the intricacies of their heart like he does. He is making the proclamation for lovers all around the world to not let their truest loves go. Life Support: This could very well be the most intimate track on the album. This song describes the sort of relationship between two people who literally can’t live without each other, hence the title of the song. Every breath and every move comes from their significant other, like second nature. Many listeners have also thought this song to be a marriage proposal, kind of playing off the token “will you marry me?” phrase. Either way, this is a statement within a song saying, don't ever leave me, I need you, you need me, and that’s the only way we can survive. Not In That Way: Talk about a tear jerker. Now, when we're completely honest with ourselves we can all admit to being in a relationship that didn't have a clear title or distinction but we just loved being around the other person, even if they thought things were more serious than they were, and we didn’t want to ruin a good thing. But in those moments, with those people, we know the end is just one awkward question away and we can’t bare to think of telling them, “I love you too, but not in that way.” I know I’ve broken a heart or two in my time, and it’s just the worst and you hate to have wasted what could’ve been a really good friendship if you had just been honest from the beginning. Lay Me Down: This song was the staple Sam Smith song when people really started to pay attention to the power in his vocals, just listen to the first 30 seconds and you’ll see for yourself. Sam sings about someone who has been denied or left or cheated on, it’s not entirely clear, but regardless he wants to be back with that person more than anything. He knows he should be stronger, he shouldn't care so much, but “the feelings are much too strong”, and he just wants to be by their side. No sex, no intimacy, just near their heart, body and soul that he cares so much about.
Sam Smith’s album, In The Lonely Hour, tells every story we’ve ever experienced when it comes to love. Soaring heights of intimacy, heartbreaking tragedy, haunting jealousy, precious friendship that could be more and the unforeseen end to something we thought would last a lifetime. This album is lyrical genius and has a spin on story telling that no American vocalist has yet tapped into. Sam Smith will forever be respected in the musical world and to think he is only just beginning… I foresee many more tear jerkers and heart warmers in the near future.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY/INTERVIEW:
From Sofia/Bulgaria comes Donnie Donkov (Dobrin 'Donnie' Donkov), a talented man who began writing songs since he was very young. Over time he learned to play classical and electric guitar, keyboards, percussion, bass and flute and with the help from the new technologies, he edited and mastered his songwriting and compositions. He was in a band called Lithium for a few years after 2000. Donnie was writing, composing, arranging, editing, mixing, recording and mastering his songs on his computer until 2015, when he created 'Donnie Donkov Project' - a formation of guest musicians, editors, artists, music video directors and more, to record studio singles and albums, shooting professional videos, do all kinds projects in the name of ART. Donnie is the only producer of the 'Project' for now. He still writes, composes and arranges everything. Though he says he prefers not to sing his own songs.
“Only 3 of them are professionally recorded for now and recording a fourth one with 'Donnie Donkov Project', but even so, I believe that all songs sound nice. We've got professionally shot official video to "Gone Forever" and at the end of the summer we're shooting another one to "It's a Beautiful Day to Start Over". By the way, recently I began to write so much new stuff - new Instrumentals and songs, movie-like music, kiddy songs... entirely new music, new lyrics', poems, short stories (even began a novel), screenwriting and some other... kind of alternative stuff which are still in progress. I'm full of ideas!!! The other thing is that I realized now I am also interested in some things like marketing, commercial and advertising, photography, music, video and photo editing and montage, directing, acting, all visual arts, painting and so many more... You can say I am expanding myself, hehe. Through exploring everyday new bands, new songs and new styles, I understand the richness of the music so I continue writing all the time”, says Donnie.
Who were your early inspirations?
Each one of my songs is inspired by a significant event in my life, music band or by a person – a girlfriend, friend of mine or even by a member of my family. For this reason I can’t determine exactly, what was the inspiration of my first songs and music. The songs, which I have liked and inspired me at my early age, are all from different music styles, because of the fact that I have went through many different stages of structuring my music preferences. Some of those songs are Bulgarian hits, which are not world-famous, but they were very influential for my development as a composer. ‘The Doors’ and ‘The Beatles’ are classic, they have inspired many generations and musicians. ‘U2’ also had a big impact on my music, though 'Led Zeppelin', Tony Mortimer, 'Rainbow', Sinead O'Connor, 'Pink Floyd' and Michael Jackson had the last word.
How do you classify your music?
My music is serious, even, like some say depressing, depending on the person. When I write, I write from deep inside my soul. For me this is like a healing process. There are always things you can't express or say to other people. I am trying to send a message to the them and their inner thoughts and feelings. I have always admired ‘Pink Floyd’ due to the fact that their music style can’t be exactly determined – their songs are only one of their kind and unique. A lot of people have asked me this question – how do I classify my music and what is my music style. I am always answering I don’t like to limit myself to a particular gender of music. The classification of my music could be done only by people who like and who don’t like certain songs and compositions of mine. I can say for sure that It's not productive for any composer, songwriter to put restrictions and to limit his music only to a certain style.
What do you want listeners to get from your music?
For me are very important the feelings, which my music stimulates in everyone and the legacy which I want to pass to the audience from all generations. When I was young I have saw and felt what an impact the the music from the early 90's had on the audience and me, and I know what an inspiration for the people was the hippie music wave in the late 60's and early 70's. My dream is to influence people like that.
I want to believe that I would contribute for the moral development of the people through a serious and deep music, which also could be a way to remember and save some of the lost memories from the past. I would like to influence people the way I was influenced from songs by great performers such as ‘Led Zeppelin’ for example.
Tell me about any CDs you have and any projects in the works?
We have recorded and released with 'Donnie Donkov Project' a single called "Whisper Volume 1" which Includes 3 of the songs from the upcoming album "Whisper" ("Gone Forever", "Up on my Tower" and "It's a Beautiful Day to Start Over"). Unfortunately the single is available only online, but it's in all online stores. Right now we are recording a fourth song called "Coming Back to You". When we get financed, we'll continue the recordings of the album. The other music which I have recorded, I recorded with my own efforts, with the help of the new technologies at home. Everything that I have recorded I am uploading on the Internet. I haven’t found anyone to produce my music and for now I am the only producer, but nevertheless I am working on 10 new songs and instrumentals. I don’t like to sing my own songs and that is why I am worked with the singer/songwriter Viara Ivanova, who is singing the demos in 5 of my songs. From the fall of 2017 I am gathering a band not only with guest musicians. Though the guest musicians are pretty famous and awesome and fortunately for now there were plenty and great to work with!
Tell me about yourself a little.
Since I can remember, I loved music, I got inspired from it and expressed myself with it. All my life was music. My parents told me that when I was so little and I barely spoke I sang, danced and drummed all the time, haha. Maybe I was 10 or something I liked the late 80’s and the early 90’s. I began from pop, rap, Bulgarian music and soft rock. Later on, in my life, my interest in music moved to hard rock, grunge, metal, punk, jazz, classical and movie music and then I have realized that maybe I can try to write something on my own because I lived with music all the time and it was the thing that mattered the most to me and kept me going. I wrote my first song in 1996. That’s how I found a way to express myself through music. Then my friends liked the songs so I decided to go on writing. I felt from that like never before and I realized this is my calling.
