It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
Tumblr media
On today's episode, I talk to musician Heather Trost. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Heather really started taking music seriously in college, often touring whenever she wasn't in class. In the early 2000s, she met her now husband, Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes and joined his fledgling project A Hawk and A Hacksaw, making it a duo. Since that time, they have released six albums, the latest of which is Forest Bathing in 2018. As a solo musician, Heather has released four albums, and her latest Desert Flowers, was released late last year on Ba Da Bing Records, and it's great!
I'm on Twitter here and you can get the show with:

I really really like that lucanis reaches the 'there must be some way through this' realization 'off camera', so to speak, while presumably looking at rook explaining the situation to spite. it just. hits right. he gets that moment to himself after 'this place is a nightmare, why would I want to stay here' to come back into focus, to gather himself and think it through in peace, outside of the demands of anyone’s gaze (including the player’s!), while rook takes care of spite’s confusion and urgency and distress as he can’t himself in this shattered state. they're inside his soul, but he still gets that moment of privacy, with rook and spite there and supporting but not intruding. idk there's just something so good and right-feeling about it. rook's presence in lucanis' mind at its most vulnerable and frozen could have felt SO invasive if the quest wasn't written as skillfully as it is, and I get skeeved out by that kind of thing incredibly easily so it's a testament to how well it's done that it always feels safe and supportive. lucanis has had both his bodily and psychological (slash spiritual/existential) integrity and autonomy violated so brutally and repeatedly, and having even the way the camera perceives him here grant him the dignity and respect and privacy of soul he hasn’t experienced in a long time… it’s a whole thing huh. No wonder it’s taken me a while to put it into words lol
(also what a contrast to what solas and rook have got going on, and what a sly way to slide the point of comparison in there to build to the thematic whole. the solas version of this IS of course wildly invasive and skeeves me out but in the intended delighted horror movie way. solas, too, was let into someone’s soul through the cracks in the wake of a traumatic event, and he IMMEDIATELY sought to turn it to his own benefit and use that trauma as a weapon against them fhdsja I’m sorry but it’s just such a character-revealing instinct for him to act on without hesitation and I love how terrible he is, it’s all so unforgivably premeditated and consistent.
rook acting out of the desire to make sure lucanis is ok vs. solas going ‘well. When life gives you oops killed my friend, make dead friend poisoned lemonade and make his loved ones drink it. this sunk cost fallacy isn’t going to perpetuate itself’ is such a neat contrast and it’s not in your face about it but it’s still there, deep and solid down in the thematic narrative. rook doesn’t do anything to or in lucanis’ mind, really — they negotiate their way through the layers of defense and are let through, and they help him make the whole thing more explicable, but they never exert any force or go rooting around for anything that doesn’t present itself to them first. solas goes about gathering ammo for when he's going to nothing personel kid this person from like the first moment fhdskh doesn't waste a second before he's on that gaslight gatekeep girlboss grind. the fact that the game goes out of its way to show there IS a respectful, non-selfish and kind version of this process makes what solas is doing even more deliciously awful (glee) and rook and lucanis’ relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever it might be in any given playthrough) all the more moving to me)
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#solas#getting some affectionate solas slander in there is always correct as far as I'm concerned that's basically his form of prayers I think#one of the most non-alienating depictions of trauma and mental illness I've come across honestly. up there with harrow the ninth#(which is the all-timer of course. that book gets me when no one else gets me) and the hawk and a hacksaw speech in due south#for things that have resonated with me recently. you can tell how deeply lucanis feels like he's a completely shattered and destroyed thing#that can't come together and be a person again. and the narrative treats him with such affection and respect anyway#even on the worst route where he doesn't really get to resolve anything he IS still a full whole incredibly loveable (and hilarious) person#even though he can't see that from the inside at this point because there's so much pain and confusion in the way.#and there's no condemnation or blame there that he shuts down irrevoccably in many ways on the fallen treviso route -- only#a neutral not-unsympathetic recognition that this was one thing too many added to the burden. this was more than he could take.#and it's not a failing it's just a fact. he's surviving the only way he knows how even when it isn't immediately uplifting or cathartic#no there are things here that's beyond you to help him with and you have to sit with the discomfort and grief of that without#getting acess to his inner life the same semi-unguarded way again actually. it's so interesting. it's subtle and real.#he was a person with deeply entrenched patterns of psychological defense before he met you and you are not an exception to that#in an automatic way. you can't 'fix him' or his relationships you can only be there with him and when conditions are right that alone heals#(subtlety in some of these things I think a lot of the 'rook is only a therapist' criticism completely fails to engage with. btw.)#anyway. he means the world to me and I love this game I only wish there was more of it

Spotify wrapped 10, 19 and 50
youtube
10. Naadmyn Magtal - Khusugtun I'm bound to have a Khusugtun song in my top 10 every year I guess.
youtube
19. Yaboo-Aidoo - Namgar When I made bets on who my top 5 bands would be this year this was always among them. Surprised they didn't make the cut.
youtube
50. A Broken Road Lined with Poplar Trees - A Hawk and a Hacksaw This one is on Vasil's playlist which is basically the only reason it got onto the wrapped playlist... Love this song, I binged it the entire week before I got top surgery in 2021. Good memories.

“the average writer uses a moderate amount of foreshadowing” is a statistical error. Author Raz “Dazzlin” Merry, who puts an UNGODLY amount of foreshadowing in the first issue alone, is an outlier and should not be counted
Haha, I was a little curious if anyone might connect that. Peek behind the curtain; that hawk was intended to be Hacksaw, or at least a bird character that would appear later in the story, but I hadn't nailed down her species or design yet. So when I make a full compiled version of this story, I'll probably edit that to be a falcon with piercing blue eyes.

WIP Wednesday
Haven't done one of these in awhile and got a sudden urge to finally do that Valery and Sebastian piece I've been wanting to do for a hot minute. Which takes place after Leandra's death.
Burdens Shared are Burdens Halved
Valery was tired. Bone-tired. The sort of tired that made her want to lie in bed for three days. That made sense, she supposed, didn’t it? She had just lost her mother after all, the supposed Amell matriarch, in a grotesque affair of blood magic and madness. She should have felt a lot of things to be honest. Rage. Grief. Despair. Sorrow. Would have been more than justified to, from what everyone kept telling her.
Yet the only other thing she felt was an undeniable undercurrent of relief. Fierce and pounding in her veins like a flood bursting through a tightly-wrought dam, leaving naught but crumbling remains in its wake. Her “friends”, if she could truly call the sordid lot of them that, thought her daze the result of grief. An eldest daughter left bereft of a mother, the last withering branch of the Hawke family in Kirkwall. The one who would have to find the energy and the words to inform Carver of it all, wherever he and the Wardens had gone. The weight of the task should have choked her and left the parchment stained with the jagged drops of her tears.
Instead it lay there on her desk blank as a fresh canvas and dry as the firewood crackling the fireplace, bathing the room in a warm glow of gold and orange. The heat scalding her cheek at least served to remind her that she wasn’t stone. Not yet anyway. Though she might as well have. How cold did one have to be to feel relief at the death of their own mother?
Black ink glistened on the edge of her quill in the firelight. Black as the aged blood that had caked Leandra’s hacksawed wounds and buried itself deep beneath her nails. Valery waited for...well, anything. A lump in the throat. A hitch. A stinging at the backs of her eyes that would well in the corners and run in rivers down her cheeks like it was supposed to do. Neither could be summoned, only the gnawing emptiness of guilt.
Not that she had failed to save her, though that was also there. But rather that she failed to feel much of anything at all.
What a wretched daughter she was. Had probably always been. Of course, that was when the ache came, hard and throbbing and insistent like a wad of poorly chewed meat lodged in her gullet. The pinpricks needling her eyes were not wielded by sadness but by frustration. Biting her lip, she slammed the quill down, splattering ink across paper and wood. Valery ground out a sigh and squeezed her eyes shut, willing a single tear to rise. Orana would have a rotten time scrubbing that out tomorrow.
“Dammit, dammit, dammit,” she muttered under her breath. “What is wrong with you? Maker, what isn’t wrong with you?”

My Melissa
A Poem by T. C. Tolbert
whose trans body is a house without a hacksaw, a nap inside
a needle, a glass vase ¾ full of smooth stones;
whose trans aorta is a mesquite tree careening through power lines, a Cooper’s Hawk
lit by lightning; whose trans lungs are two jars full
of  bumblebees singing on the uncovered back porch. Even our name is a match
tossed into the fire it started, an edgeless invocation. Melissa, a wind
made by swinging; grass cutting through concrete; bubble-wrap being danced on,
albeit slowly, as if that alone could quiet the tiny explosions down the hall. Whose
trans articular cartilage is string light threaded through the rafters; whose trans
tunica media is a sliver of decorated cardboard doubling as a protest
sign inside the window, which only serves to emphasize the window’s
inefficacy
against the sun; whose trans epiglottis is an apron
on a hook; whose trans trapezius are cups in the sink filled
with inconsistently directed knives and spoons; whose trans metatarsals are
green beans boiling on the stove; whose trans subclavian artery is organ
pipe cactus under cloud cover; whose trans left ventricle is a black-capped goldfinch hanging
upside down to eat; whose trans lesser trochanter is a hen’s claw growing around a rope;
whose trans great saphenous veins are technologies of prediction—tarot, storm-
tracker, political polls; whose trans dead space is the undeniable pollution
of light; whose trans thyroid cartilage is commissioned
graffiti; whose trans facial hair is the gentrifier yelling
gentrification; whose trans erythrocytes are dapples of daylight
drug across a concrete block wall; whose trans stroke volume is a live-
streamed filibuster; whose trans plasma is the intimacy
of strangers immediate in an emergency; whose trans plasma proteins are women
filling a courtroom—one by one approaching the judge—performing
all the mental and physical labor of obtaining a divorce; whose trans
integumentary system
is the myth of meritocracy; whose trans rectum is a local philanthropic institution;
whose trans bile is the taste of a slap echoing in your mother’s open palm;
whose trans femoral vein is a cat’s claw’s crafted search for the sun;
whose trans pharynx is an empty building brimming with trampolines; whose trans ovaries
are interrobangs used unironically; whose trans ureter is
a stop sign stuffed with bullet holes near a ditch filled with sunflowers near a wasp’s
nest near a farm. Sometimes I’m afraid I am afraid
of me, my trans sympathetic nervous
system, my trans fatigue
cracks, my trans 1st Corinthians 3:16 training
the god right out of my trans temple,
all trans dove, no savior; a trans baptism, holy
to be a fire (trans) trembling in the tear of the trans (daughter, trans) tongue. How I love you
now, my trans vagina, my trans manubrium, my trans Melissa, in every iteration TC
Melissa Dawn Tolbert who was even once
a Harrison, a wife to a husband; it is possible she loved
me then too. Hiding can she hear me
say thank you. To my trans uterus, my trans pectoralis major, my trans penis: the highest point
on earth is in the ocean. Sea stars, our body’s becoming. A trans prayer. An infinite, inexhaustible
rhizome of the heart. You,
whose tragus is trans, whose kidneys, whose medulla oblongata, whose
adrenal glands, whose cochlea, whose pleural space; whose trans sacrum is simultaneous,
the site of the storm and the keel of a storm-scored boat.
Whose trans arrector pili muscle is the fact that no matter when this
sentence is read, it will be true
that someone somewhere is trying to survive a sexual assault; whose trans inferior
vena cava is a clock that has not yet been hung on the wall.
I love you time, how trans you are.
Your trans boredom, ribbon-sharp and meadow-bold. You, whose bark is
trans; whose recovery, whose lumen, whose partial pressure
(trans), in order to live, must continue to respond to changes in the lungs.

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1991
We’re rumbling into 1991.
Spoilers for past Rumbles,
For those too young to remember, this year’s Rumble took place during the Gulf War. Vince had the brilliant idea to take Sgt. Slaughter, one of the most patriotic wrestlers of the 1980s and star of the GI Joe cartoon and turn him into Hussein sympathizer. Stupid. Personally, I think wrestling should stay away from real-life events as the industry reduces them to racist caricatures and stereotypes. Real-life wars are tragedies, not entertainment. I watch wrestling for entertainment.
I’m only reviewing the Rumble, but the undercard is pretty good:
The Rockers vs the Orient Express
Sherri confronts the Ultimate Warrior. Re-watching the older pay per views can be a depressing experience when you realize how many stars have passed way too soon. All four participants in this segment (Mene Gene mediates, Randy Savage ambushes the Warrior) are deceased. The two commentators (Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper) have passed. From the first match, Mr Fuji has passed. We’re a half hour into this program, and we’re at a fatality count of 7. On a more positive note, Sherri is one of the most talented women the sport has seen.
The Barbarian (managed by Bobby Heenan) vs the Big Boss Man (add two more to the casualty count)
Sgt Slaughter (managed by General Adnan) vs the Ultimate Warrior. Sherri (in a new outfit) and Savage interfere in the match and, honestly, are the best part of this match. Adnan has passed on, so the number of deceased performers is at 10.
Koko B Ware vs the Mountie (managed by Jimmy Hart). The Mountie always gets his man! And we finally have a match where no one has died!
Dusty & Dustin Rhodes vs Ted DiBase & Virgil (add two more to the passed on category, we’re now at a total of 12 performers that have left us too soon. Side note: Dusty’s WWE theme is one of my all-time favorites. DiBase’s theme is also a banger. Virgil finally turns on the Million-Dollar Man!
The entrants of the Rumble in order of appearance:
Bret Hart (2nd time the Hitman has been the #1 participant)
Dino Bravo (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Greg Valentine (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Paul Roma (managed by Slick)
“Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich (Kerry ran to the ring – I can see why people were unaware that he had a foot amputated).
Rick Martel
Tony Atlas (or Samba Simba as he was known at the time…such a bad stereotypical gimmick)
Bushwhacker Butch
Jake Roberts
Hercules (managed by Slick)
Tito Santana
Undertaker (managed by Brother Love)
Jimmy Snuka
Davey Boy Smith
Smash of Demolition
Hawk of the Legion of Doom
Shane Douglas (post-Dynamic Dudes but pre-Franchise)
No-Show (Supposed to be Randy Savage but he was too busy running from the Ultimate Warrior)
Animal of the Legion of Doom
Crush of Demolition
Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Earthquake (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Mister Perfect (managed by Bobby Heenan)
Hulk Hogan
Haku
Jim Neidhart
Bushwhacker Luke
Brian Knobbs of the Nasty Boys
The Warlord
Tugboat
Lots of fresh faces in the 1991 Rumble: Roma, Von Erich, Atlas, Undertaker, Davey Boy, Douglas, Crush of Demolition, the Legion of Doom, Brian Knobbs of the Nasty Boys.
Taker clearly isn’t “Taker” yet as he only eliminated one wrestler and was easily eliminated by the Legion of Doom.
Hogan won his second Rumble (boring).
I said the 1990 Rumble was the most depressing when it came to deceased wrestlers but 1991 surpassed it: only 9 participants of the Rumble have passed but if you include the non-wrestlers/wrestlers in the undercard the total number is 21. Looking forward to a Rumble where the deceased count is less than five.
Rating: 5 out of 10

Review of "Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes" by the Music Tapes in Pitchfork, 2008
fragments:
“The word "timeless" is bandied about carelessly in music writing, often incorrectly as an indication that something is more than a fad. But Music Tapes For Clouds and Tornadoes, the long-time-coming sophomore album by Julian Koster's Music Tapes project, is the rare case of a record that literally sounds timeless, or not of a specific era.”
[...]
“Don't get hung up on such weirdness, though. Sure, Koster and his cast of collaborators use lyrical abstraction and experimental recording techniques, but the melodies at the heart of each song are welcoming and familiar. And even the unusual way they've been gussied up only adds to their poignancy. These 15 tracks were certainly worth the almost-decade-long wait.”

Trying to Remember 2000s Indie Woman Artist
Trying to Remember 2000s Indie Woman Artist Ok, this one hurts my memory and I combed through my CD collection to find it but no avail. The singer was a woman, and had the whole “cursive singing, waifish child like voice but depressed and sultry” type voice. It was a solo act I believe and I think was released in the mid to late 2000sIt was atmospheric music, with an electronica trip hop style bent (but definitely way more indie folk vibe) reminiscent of Bjork - in fact I remember thinking like who is this person ripping Bjork off) I feel like it was around or just a little before some of the indie of the time like Iron and Wine, Devendra, Beirut, Shins-y eraHere’s who it’s NOT: Cat Power, Bjork, Feist, Cocorosie, Hawk and a Hacksaw, Beirut, Joanna Newsom, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Smokey and Miho. IIt was definitely 2000s maybe very early aughts. I’d like to think I know Trip Hop very well so I don’t think it will be anything from that canon or before 2001. I’ve scoured some Pitchfork articles, run through Music maps and all music sites, checked my CD cases, etc. Ah! It’s killing me! Any Indie enthusiasts out there with ideas?
