The rapid advancement of AI has transformed data center economics in ways few predicted. When a single rack of AI servers costs around $3 million—as much as a luxury home—the risk calculation fundamentally changes. As Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Ben Horowitz recently cautioned, data centers financing these massive hardware investments “could get upside down very fast” if they don’t carefully manage their infrastructure strategy.
This new reality demands a fundamental rethinking of cooling approaches. While traditional metrics like PUE and operating costs are still important, they are secondary to protecting these multi-million-dollar hardware investments. The real question data center operators should be asking is: How do we best protect our AI infrastructure investment?
The Hidden Risks of Traditional Cooling
The industry’s historic reliance on single-phase, water-based cooling solutions carries increasingly unacceptable risks in the AI era. While it has served data centers well for years, the thermal demands of AI workloads have pushed this technology beyond its practical limits. The reason is simple physics: single-phase systems require higher flow rates to manage today’s thermal loads, increasing the risk of leaks and catastrophic failures.
This isn’t a hypothetical risk. A single water leak can instantly destroy millions in AI hardware—hardware that often has months-long replacement lead times in today’s supply-constrained market. The cost of even a single catastrophic failure can exceed a data center’s cooling infrastructure budget for an entire year. Yet many operators continue to rely on these systems, effectively gambling their AI investment on aging technology.
At Data Center World 2024, Dr. Mohammad Tradat, NVIDIA’s Manager of Data Center Mechanical Engineering, asked, “How long will single-phase cooling live? It’ll be phased out very soon…and then the need will be for two-phase, refrigerant-based cooling.” This isn’t just a growing opinion—it’s becoming an industry consensus backed by physics and financial reality.
A New Approach to Investment Protection
Two-phase cooling technology, which uses dielectric refrigerants instead of water, fundamentally changes this risk equation. The cost of implementing a two-phase cooling system—typically around $200,000 per rack—should be viewed as insurance for protecting a $5 million AI hardware investment. To put this in perspective, that’s a 4% premium to protect your asset—considerably lower than insurance rates for other multi-million dollar business investments. The business case becomes even clearer when you factor in the potential costs of AI training disruption and idle infrastructure during unplanned downtime.
For data center operators and financial stakeholders, the decision to invest in two-phase cooling should be evaluated through the lens of risk management and investment protection. Dell Technologies used the Dell Technologies World in Las Vegas to announce the latest generation of AI acceleration servers which come equipped with Nvidia’s Blackwell Ultra GPUs.
The systems claim to deliver up to four times faster AI training capabilities compared to previous generations, as Dell expands its AI Factory partnership with Nvidia amid intense competition in the enterprise AI hardware market.
The servers arrive as organisations move from experimental AI projects to production-scale implementations, creating demand for more sophisticated computing infrastructure.
The new lineup features air-cooled PowerEdge XE9780 and XE9785 servers, designed for conventional data centres, and liquid-cooled XE9780L and XE9785L variants, optimised for whole-rack deployment.
The advanced systems support configurations with up to 192 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs with direct-to-chip liquid cooling, expandable to 256 GPUs per Dell IR7000 rack. “We’re on a mission to bring AI to millions of customers around the world,” said Michael Dell, the eponymous chairman and chief executive officer. “Our job is to make AI more accessible. With the Dell AI Factory with Nvidia, enterprises can manage the entire AI lifecycle in use cases, from deployment to training, at any scale.”

Key Differences Between Software and Hardware
Unlike hardware, software is wholly different.
Hardware mainly means the physical parts. You can actually touch and see it, and hear it working, like a loud fan, or a keyboard making clicking sounds. Once anything goes wrong with it, you might have to replace a part: like the phone glass, or a damaged hard disk.
Software refers to any program and a set of instructions that a particular hardware runs. One cannot physically touch it—it lives on your devices in a digital format. When software goes wrong, one may just update it, uninstall, reinstall, or attempt some debugging actions.
Hardware can last for several years if taken care of properly, whereas software needs regular updates to keep the system secure and efficient. Another important thing is that hardware is useless if software is not there to tell it what to do, and software is absolutely useless if there is no hardware for it to run on.
In a nutshell:
Hardware is tangible; software is intangible.
Hardware wears down; software crashes or corrupts.
Hardware is the flesh; software is the mind.
They both are needed to operate a computer!
Why Both Are Important
A computer needs both types of hardware and software to work. A car and its chauffeur is how you should compare hardware and software. Are there no drivers? The car goes nowhere. No car? The driver is walking!

A LLM cannot know what hardware it is running on unless it’s told directly. It doesn’t have any sort of sensor to detect battery level or ram usage like an animal might detect hunger or fatigue. Either a LLM will fail to generate anything or it will generate the whole sentence perfectly normally. It’s pretty funny

kind of a fun piece in practice but it's so fucking funny to ascribe agency to the language model. the reaction to this is just a rehash of that google employee who told their llm to be a scary robot and lost his shit when it said "I'm a scary robot"
