Retail Pricing with Artificial Intelligence
Retail Pricing with Artificial Intelligence
Possibilities and potential in today’s environment.
Kiran Gange
August 17, 2020
The perfect price for every product is a moving target. The ideal price should match the value a consumer is willing to pay for the given product and this depends on factors which change continuously. No customers wants to pay full price for a produce that is not fresh.
Tumblr media
Banana: Changing Value and Price
To make this more complex, the factors which matter the most for one product-location is very different from the factors that matter to another product-location. While it is humanely impossible for any category or pricing manager to match the price of a products to its ever changing value continuously, the machines have begun to approach the ideal price in a more feasible manner.
The machines have the unfair advantage of being able to process large amounts of input data or factors that matter and to make intelligent decisions based on artificial intelligence that come through the learnings of thousands (if not millions) of combinations of prices for each product store combination on a continuous basis.
There are several reasons for why Artificial Intelligence is the next frontier in retail pricing:
#1. Availability of Data
Retail data at the granular level is now stored, processed and utilized more easily than ever before. The technology allows for efficient processes that can securely utilize input data from sources such as IOT devices, mobile data, camera/image recognition, store traffic and customer data while respecting the local laws for privacy and data regulations.
#2. Intelligent Algorithms
We no longer have to have highly paid mathematicians writing code and algorithms to utilize retail data. Intelligence and learning are available to use as "methods" and “weights” that become the base of an Artificial Intelligence based algorithm to help with pricing in retail.
#3. Instant Output
Retailers now have many installations inside the retail stores such as Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs), smart displays, employee devices and beacons that can facilitate the output of an algorithms instantly in a store environment. Added advantage is the “feedback” these devices provide back to the algorithms to help decipher if a price is working or if it needs to be improved through “learning”.
The technology has been ready for a few years and now we have the solution that can reap the benefit of these new technologies. However, the new system of pricing is not an incremental innovation, it is disruptive. This means the retailer willing to leverage this will need to do so with a futuristic vision to integrate new approaches for the entire pricing organization. The current situation. Rapidly evolving markets will force the adoption in some ahead of the others.
Possibilities with an AI based Pricing System
The possibilities and the potential benefits of retail pricing is huge with a fully connected AI based system. While price, promotion and waste reduction increase revenues, the automation reduces costs both at the head quarter and store levels.
Tumblr media
Potential benefits of an Artificial Intelligence based Pricing system.
The RapidPricer pricing solution today is not built to replace the process of pricing as done by retailers. RapidPricer implements a framework on which future technologies can be deployed.
Although our solution can handle the entire gamut of the retail assortment, our implementations often begin with one of best use cases for the Artificial Intelligence pricing. Food wastage reduction through dynamic pricing. We use various innovative technologies to find the perfect price for every produce in each store at any given point of time to reduce waste and increase gross margins benefit by 4% or more.

Note
Why is it that even/especially on mobile, micro-transactions are as expensive as they are? That is, at least the ones I've seen I have to think whether the value is even there. I would have thought that "giving away" obviously great value would get more people to bite. Are big spenders worth that much more than getting more small spenders? Is there some floor where even the cheapest good deal won't entice a new spender?
You might be surprised at how much others are actually willing to pay for things they like. Big spenders do a lot of the heavy lifting, and most choose to spend because they get sufficient positive value (for them) out of the game overall. My cousin's FIFA league is an example of that - all participants are highly-paid professionals who really like soccer, so they all engage without a spending limit because it's fun for them.
Tumblr media
For pricing determination, it's something of an optimization issue - we don't want to charge more than most spending players are willing to pay or the value proposition isn't there and they won't buy at all, but we also don't want to charge too much less than most spending players are willing to pay or we're leaving money on the table that the players would be willing to give us. Many sufficiently-large mobile games will feel this out via A/B testing, where they distribute two slightly different versions of the same game and microtransaction offerings to their players and track spending behaviors to see which set of prices do better overall. They will also do this A/B testing to try other potential changes as well - game flow, visual design, level design, etc.
Tumblr media
You are quite correct, however - the "regular" microtransaction offerings usually aren't for the budget-minded or newer spenders. Most developers create different microtransaction products aimed at different types of players. Converting non-paying players to small spenders is extremely important to any microtransaction business model. Getting someone to spend the first time is a lot more difficult than getting them to spend the second, fifth, or fiftieth time (especially in a free-to-play environment). For new players, devs usually offer a variety of one-time introductory packages that are more budget-friendly and help with early- and mid- game content more than elder game content. These introductory products ease the transition from non-spending player into spending player.
Tumblr media
For regular spending players that are more budget-minded, devs typically offer a different set of options - often more limited quantity time-based "deals". These often aren't the latest and greatest things released, but can provide more value to the player for the price - instead of offering the newest coolest costumes to come out, this month's deal offers a bundle of several older costumes together at a reduced price. The fact that they are better value (if not the latest and greatest) and time-sensitive tends to make the buyers feel better about their limited purchases - they're getting a better deal that isn't always available.
Tumblr media
Obviously, those who spend the most will get the most offerings. Not only are they the ones who support the game most financially, they are also the ones who consume the most paid content and demand more. Those who spend less are still valuable, which is why we will still offer them things, but they spend less so they also consume less. New players get special treatment, because new players can bounce off of a game easily and we want to keep as many new players around for as long as we can.

the replies to that "video games shouldn't cost 70 bucks" really annoy me bc people always go "b-but the developers"
1 - the developers are already paid and yes, they are underpaid
2 - the game sales are getting into the pockets of the publisher/the higher ups. I don't think the devs are getting much money from the sales (I doubt they get any since they've already been paid)
3 - with the recent Jedi: Survivor controversy, EA pretty much admitted that they refuse to do QA testing (which would cost money) and are using their costumers to beta test their poorly optimized games while also blaming the customers for not using Windows 11. which, I don't need to mention, is even buggier than Win 10 and has a lot of issues with cybersecurity.
it's the greedy higher ups wanting to up the prices, so they can shove more money into their pockets while abusing their employees, cutting costs on beta testers and then scamming their customers. the games getting more expensive isn't because of the developers, it's the higher ups, it's always the higher ups wanting more money.
you really think the suits sitting in their big comfortable chairs care about giving more money to the overworked devs? think again.
tl;dr stop excusing the AAA industry's scummy practices

capitalism is fucked up because communing with the invisible hand of the market is weird and every single product release and decision is forced by competition to be this a b test human psychology thing. like if u are making a site, objectively the color of your buttons? can affect your click rates a LOT. why some colors "good" some colors "bad"? probably some mix of culturally specific and instinctual and individual factors that across the population, average out-- even if a "good" color increases sales overall its possible some may be turned off by it etc etc. and then theres the whole thing with specific cases and niche markets etc etc.
and the terrifying thing is like. all this stuff is fake, but it affects your real money coming in. which is significant whether you're a small independent business or a huge soulless conglomerate. and now take that button color decision and multiply that times... every other design choice on your site, products, packaging, etc. At what point does compromising your brand to fit these subconscious ideally performing structures taint the original product to the point where it loses its appeal? Are you willing to compromise any artistic decisions in the first place? Many products are built from the ground up with these constraints in mind, or at least with the flexibility to mold to fit the current constraints plus be re-buildable as they change.
Because oh yeah, they change. There is some amount of long term subconscious bias shifting, but there's also things like google's algorithm changes. A subtly different stream of people (maybe a lot more but, likely since your optimizations may break, a lot less) are going to your site. All those tests, if you did them, might not be accurate anymore. In the moment though, the catastrophic traffic loss is also the kiss of death, you have to try REALLY hard or have a lot of money to survive it. even still that money can go pretty fast if you have any overhead at all.
so, this setup where things are getting increasingly difficult in a lot of places, a some point down the line of staying alive, if you dont use these optimizations you may just not survive. (especially against venture capitalist-fueled competitors if youre unfortunate enough to encounter them, because they will jack up the price of doing business in your respective niche or even introduce flat-out harmful practices) Now multiply that instability times any other platforms or services you depend on-- any disruption to them causes disruption to you. Almost every single website I have made or seen a business make using a third party has eventually been forced to change their entire layout. Possibly multiple times.
And the thing is. There is another activity where it can sometimes involve a similar type of inferencing. Making art, if it at least gets to start out as just for yourself to some extent, is also a balance between understandability, (your idea of understandability) mass appeal, (as much as you feel is necessary) and individual vision/intent. it's just that in capitalism you are asked to do it for your survival, or work for companies and businesses which on some level are affected by it and, thus, can throw your life into disarray simply because of a change in the market or an arbitrarily shit decisions that can happen at any point in an increasingly long chain. It's really hard to escape it unless you have access to fuck you money, so in modern capitalism everyone gets the awesome privilege of knowing that their life hangs in the balance of a bunch of delicate strings, many of which are intent on optimizing for profit and survival aka squeezing rent and goods and necessities higher in a fucked up test of how much they can possibly get, or self-destructing in the name of short-term profit.
this situation is responsible for inducing a lot of the anxiety ppl have right now and i dont say that to discredit the awfulness of the condition at all, its very real. its cruel that the things that can harm us are so abstract in nature now, and that abstraction is of course a weapon to make it impossible for you to do anything to stop it ahead of time.
Self help says dumb shit like "modern stressors are not like the tiger chasing you in the jungle" but they miss that that's worse. Because the same peril exists, and in fact is worse now-- in the natural world there is danger, but a human needs to fuck up pretty bad to get thrown out of the tribe, and the brain craves that security. In the modern day you can easily slip through a crack and get ground to dust and that's a feature not a bug. (in fact that tribal security is the carrot that is used when the stick of homelessness has not yet been reached for) We feel the same desperation of survival but the walls of abstraction between us and that truth create the impression that being upset about this makes you unwell and will likely bring on the gaslighting about everything actually being ok and this system is the best we could ever possibly hope for. They didn't even have to abstract things that much, there's really only a few layers here, and yet it is enough. And the closest thing to a tribe most have now is that goddamn invisible hand (products and services designed down to the bevels and colors to scratch the brains itch for security and novelty just enough to keep you functional)

Leveraging Heatmaps for Strategic Website Optimization
Tumblr media
The strategic use of “heatmaps” has become integral to website optimization, propelling your digital strategy toward ultimate success. As part of a multifaceted toolkit alongside Google Analytics, A/B testing, and conversion funnel analysis, heatmaps provide insightful data on user interaction patterns, guiding you in creating a user-centric website design and experience.
Heatmaps serve as a visualization mechanism, translating complex data into easily understandable representations. They help discern where visitors’ attention gravitates when landing on your site and determine the probability of clicks on various webpage areas. Such insights become pivotal when deciding the strategic positioning of crucial links and the elements requiring linking on your site.
A specific category of a heatmap, known as the “mouse movement” heatmap, mirrors the path traced by a visitor’s mouse across your webpage. This type of heatmap holds special significance for internet marketers, offering a data-backed approach to pinpointing optimal placement for promotional information and advertisements. It should be noted, however, that quality often comes at a price in the realm of heatmap tools. Free offerings often fail to deliver the detailed insights you need, making premium, paid tools a wise investment.
Tumblr media
I personally recommend Crazy Egg or Contentsquare for comprehensive heatmap reports. Despite being a paid tools, both offer a well-balanced blend of affordability and quality, making them a reliable choice for businesses and individual users.
Utilizing heatmaps isn’t merely a passing trend; it’s essential to strategic decision-making in content creation and website design. A heatmap is a diagnostic tool unveiling a wealth of insights into how visitors navigate your web pages. These insights can significantly enhance your website’s engagement, steering the user journey down the conversion funnel more efficiently. Example below.
Tumblr media
A deeper dive into the heatmap territory introduces another valuable tool called ‘scroll mapping’. Scroll maps are an extension of heatmaps that offer insightful details about how far down users are scrolling on your web pages. This is crucial to understand, as it highlights the ‘fold’ – the point at which users must start scrolling to see more. Data from scroll maps can reveal whether crucial content or calls to action are being missed because they’re placed too far down the page. In fact, the ‘hottest’ areas of a scroll map often signify the most engaging or attention-grabbing parts of your page. Incorporating scroll map data into your design strategy can enhance your content positioning and overall website usability, ultimately improving engagement and conversion rates. Tools like Crazy Egg or Contentsquare offer robust scroll mapping features, further enriching your understanding of user behavior and website interaction.
Understanding your visitors’ behavior is key to successful website optimization. Heatmaps are the compass guiding you toward informed, user-centric design decisions. So, don’t underestimate the power of a well-analyzed heatmap; it could be the linchpin in your website’s success story.
