my quick thoughts on The Star Beast

Tbh I liked it but it needed some tweaking and a trans script editor.. I did love so much of it, but I probably wouldn't have liked it as much if I wasn't already attached to 10/14, Donna, and Sylvia - it just felt weirdly balanced?

Loved most of the way Rose and transness was portrayed (those last 8 minutes were.... Something - and I felt Rose's line should have been more "wait meep is a he?" cont. scene rather the "oh you're ASSUMING he/him pronouns.") but overall it was HUGE to see a compassionate and loved trans character in DOCTOR WHO!!! and I loved Donna's subtle acknowledgement that Rose isn't safe in the UK

Donna and 14's interactions were so so amazing every single one felt like a gift - phenomenally done character work

the music??? SOUND MIXING?? oh I could die happy - the PROSTHETICS?? the PUPPET??? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA idc idc it all looked amazing - some people I guess didn't like the Wrath Warrior's design BOOOOO doctor who is silly! let it be silly! it's literally doctor who - and it looked so good I was such a fan.

The biggest technical problem was really just a lack of balance. The meep vs Wrath Warriors plot was fun, it had a good twist, but it wasn't really trying to tell us anything thematically; which is fine!!! not every doctor who episode has to have a gutpunching metaphor or huge Commentary with its aliens! and that's not what this episode needed at all.

It was and Should Be a character driven story - but ti felt like the plot was too loud? that it didn't leave much breathing room to get to know rose or explore more with Donna

I kind of feel like Unit shouldn't have been in this episode, and they should have made the plot smaller to focus on the meat of the story

Overall a very promising start and I'm still SUPER excited for the next two eps and new series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what are the bullshit rules of the inkblot test

ok so oh my god

rorschach aka inkblot right? seems simple enough, you tell the person applying the test what you see n that person notes down what that say about you right?

not even close.

so the thing is, for a psych test to be considered valid as a, yknow, actual fucking testing tool for noting down objective things about the person youre evaluating, you cannot leave any room for mistakes or extrapolation.

that means that you have to be incredibly precise and meticulous with the rules of how to apply it and how to interpret the results.

... you see where this is going, right? rorschach, by nature, is already wildly fucking interpretative. all youre doing is grabbing some ink blots and asking the person to tell you what they see. the possibilities for that are endless, and for what that could mean are even more endless. you cannot, realistically, be entirely objective about that and cover ALL possible bases.

... but they tried anyway. and the result is a gigantic fucking rulebook that has an insane amount of categories used to classify every single bit of how someone sees those goddamn ink smears. they have categories for how many figures are seen, if its abstract, if they see colors in it, how they interpret colors in it, if they see body parts, how they classify body parts, is it moving, whats moving, is it animals, is it people, is it violent, is it objects, is it a landscape, is it a fantasy creature, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

and you have to be insanely precise with every little bit of categorization because all of those little bits of classification form a neat little code, that you use to go to this equally huge list of possible meanings that people have logged on as something you can see those ink blots as (nevermind the fact that it should technically be endless, they still tried) and are classified as whether its common or abnormal to see this or not.

the worst part however is the classification code that this all riding so desperately on to say whether what someone saw is normal or not is also a nightmare to agree upon. when i learned rorschach, we split our classroom into groups and were given someones already completed test, told to classify their interpretations.

we spent so so long, almost 3 entire different classes, classifying those interpretations, because we could hardly agree on shit like: whether "a bucket of spilled water" should be classified as still or moving (our teacher argued the correct classification was moving because of the movement of water spilling which i think its bullshit bc it already spilled the waters already on the ground but FINE. FINE. OK.)

rorschach, in my opinion, is at its best when not used as a serious testing tool, n more as a fun icebreaker exercise. ideally, you wouldnt use it to test anything or even bother with classification, just use that to get to know what your patients thinking about n move on. but to get your hands on the official papers with the high quality reproductions of the ink blots and officially and legally apply it you still have to get that monster of a manual n study it n get a license for it. like are you insane? never. keep it away from me. never again.
