You review your mental checklist one last time as you pace about your room, door open. How could it have all ended so soon? You'd spent the rest of your days happily fucking, drinking, and soaking in the luxuries of the resort.

Katsuki lingers by the doorway. A flicker of fondness grows into a fire when you turn to see him and smile. When did he get so soft?

"Hey! What's up?"

"What's up? It's your last day, and you're what's upping me."

"Katsukiii," you drag out the syllables and catch the faintest smirk on his lips. "Don't get too sad while I'm gone."

"Please," he scoffs and rolls his eyes, the two of you making eye contact that holds longer than it should.

The two of you shouldn't be so dramatic; you should try to steel yourself. It's not like you've known each other for that long, Katsuki thinks before reaching out and pulling you into a loose hug.

"See ya," he grumbles.

"Hehe, text me! Call me whenever," you mumble into the muscle of his chest.

He smells like the start of a campfire, mixed with a cool cologne that wafts like the breeze of a nearby ocean. You pull away and look into the tides of his eyes, the Red Sea staring back at you, before he gently kisses your lips.

"I'll think about it. For now, I'll walk you out," and he wraps a possessive arm around your waist.

There was no other option; he was walking you out. You squawk at his comment, "That is not an 'I'll think about it' statement!"

"Oh, yeah? Well, lemme think on it."

"Stop it!"

Muriel bjd update

An update about my Muriel ball-jointed doll(s)!

I am planning a Kickstarter for this project. It is not ready yet but I hope to have it ready later this month or early next month. I do NOT plan to sell these online apart from the KS campaign, because of recasting. I plan to sell them at furry conventions and ball-jointed doll conventions if I can get myself to one (I live in Florida, though). There will likely be fewer than 100 of these but I haven't calculated all of that yet. I have a serial numbering system and a way to authenticate them that I'm excited to try in my next prototype!

After discussing having them casted, I think I will be 3D printing them myself, as the open mouth faceplate cannot be casted, and I don't want to deal with having to print that anyway and making it fit a casted one... If I regret that choice, I will learn for next time lol. The next doll I am working on (my Harold) I thinking might be a better choice for casting, as they would be one color and have a closed mouth.

I was using Siraya Tech Fast Mecha for my next prototype, which was to be the Official Muriel in her natural colors. What happened was basically two things: 1) resin is expensive and 2) it got really really hot outside, which separates Fast Mecha from the Tenacious I mix it with. My next prototype is basically on hold until it stops being 100 degrees out, which it has been since May... Fast Mecha is a compounded resin and does separate. One of the tails I printed for another doll had a transparent tip because the resin separated at the end of the print once it got hot out, so I'm not going to have that happen with a 20-hour print!

Anyway, I'm going to try a few different mixes of the good resin with some ABS-like and Tenacious, as I like how those feel more than Fast Mecha on its own. Mecha is kind of like, powdery, or has a rougher sort of texture, seems to get dirty easier (or I am bad at cleaning it) and is not as transparent. I liked how you could see through the ears a little, like real ears, and Mecha robbed me of that lol, so I want to try cutting it to like a 50/50 ABS-like and Mecha mix, and then add 1/5 of Tenacious to that (math is not my thing but I always add my Tenacious at the end now; it gives me extra resin to not run out in the print and helps my brain calculate things). Also, the cleaning process for Mecha is like, they tell you to toothbrush the entire thing with alcohol, and I want to streamline my post processing, so a resin mix would be good, as long as it doesn't create the scratches in the joints. I want to get it down to a ratio where there is no powdery grinding residue on the joints. The only review I can find said they did 50/50 Mecha and Tenacious and it still did not powder itself at that ratio, so I'm hoping I can do that but with the ABS-like resin I like.

So! Stay tuned for updates for the Kickstarter. I know a few people on here expressed interest and I'm excited at the possibility of actually being able to send some Muriels out into the world, if I can generate enough interest!

Do I only work on resin? Nope! I also work on vinyl dolls (and ABS).

This is a Smart Doll Chaos V01. in cocoa skin. I had to cut off the pour spout at the top, so that was an interesting challenge to work with. And then of course paint it naturally and with an illusion of a super short buzz-cut hair.

She's based on a video game character, but I am not sure which game or character, still fun to work on.

Nova Blaze, cyborg streamer

I started this project intending it to be a quick test of a few techniques, and I didn't start thinking of it as a "character" until I was already printing test parts. I think Nova Blaze nonetheless managed to take on a unique identity by the end.

Sadly, she isn't a dinosaur, and she doesn't come with any transformations or widgets, but she's going to live on my monitor stand for a while nonetheless. 

There were really three technical goals for this project. First, I wanted to rely as little as possible on painted detail, using dye for the bulk of the figure's colors to greatly improve durability. Second, April convinced me to try ball and socket joints on a figure again, because their simplicity and compactness opens up a lot of options. Third, I wanted to to make a figure that was a bit sexy, with some reference to lines like Frame Arms Girl, Robot Neoanthropinae Polynian, and Busou Shinki.

So, first, those colors. The acrylic paints I used on Bit Cobalt and still use for detailing are prone to chipping and scratching. I want my figures to be durable enough to pose and play with, and dye is the natural solution.

Outside of the beige "skin" parts, Nova is mostly made with white resin dyed into color, with the dye mixed into the liquid resin for the pink parts. The yellow parts were printed white and dyed in a diluted dye bath, and the black was painted on directly undiluted. Most of the photos in this post are of a second copy of the figure made for April, and there's very little paint on it, essentially just the lipstick, the gray sections on the torso, and the cyan streak in the hair.

The second technical goal for this project was in the joints. Nova's joints include a few ball and socket joints with both sides printed in resin, which I was initially reluctant to try. I've seen very bad results from attempting ball and socket joints in "standard" resin, and the "ABS-like" resin I'm using doesn't solve all of the problems - the porous surfaces still bite and grind at first - but it made the difference between unworkable and workable results once I'd dialed in the socket geometry.

In the hips and ankles, I've used Kotobukiya Hexa Gear joints for the ball side of the pair, which seem to be working very smoothly. (April very sweetly surprised me with a small stash of the joints after handling an early form of the figure.) Nova's range of articulation is the most I've hoped to get out of a figure so far, and I'm very happy with some of the poses she can pull off, as is probably clear in the photos. 

The third goal of the project, of making a figure that was a bit sexy, doesn't sound like a technical challenge, especially for a cartoon cyborg. But I've always really struggled to draw human characters that aren't uncanny and awkward, and up to now, the robot figures I've been modeling have largely been made up of chunky shapes that are very forgiving to my weak understanding of human anatomy. Nova was an opportunity to push and practice just a little in that area.

In turn, working with more organic shapes was a chance to practice a bit more with sculpting tools in Blender rather than leaning solely on the hard-surface modeling tools (constructing rather than sculpting) I'm more comfortable with.

I'm indebted to the time Workbenchmaniac has spent tutoring me in using Blender's sculpting tools, and specifically in sculpting faces. I made much more use of that tool set (and skill set) in this project than in any of my previous ones. I'm particularly happy with Nova's face sculpt, even if it took me three days to do what a real sculptor can do in thirty minutes.

I had the figure mostly modeled, still thinking of it as mostly a technical exercise, when April suggested the cyan hair streak to complete the CMYK color scheme. Things snowballed from there, and a few realizations (like "laptop stickers") and a week of work later, Nova had developed into something a bit more like a character.

Nova's hair can be popped off to interchange her face plates using a pair of magnets. She has stands in varied heights for any of five emoji, meant to represent chat reactions to her stream, and some alternate hands.

Since I've never done any animation or sculpted posed figurines, I still have a lot to learn about modeling humans and creatures for posing, so the hand poses are simplistic and don't bend quite right. That'll be something to improve on in a future project, although I'll have to get back to something a little more crunchily mechanical for a bit for my next figure.

The Difference Between Piccolo and Flute Instruments

At first glance, the piccolo and flute might seem like twins in the woodwind family. Both are held horizontally, played by blowing across a hole and possess a similar elegance. But if you delve deeper, you will find a universe of differences between these two instruments. "I want to collect BJDs, but they're so expensive!"

It's tiny, but I've found a great BJD option for people who don't have the money for a resin cutie, as long as you don't mind a blind box.

Penny's Box (link is for US buyers) is a line of blind-box dolls that are about 6" tall. They are tension-strung BJDs, but because they are made of PVC and ABS plastics, they are WAY cheaper than resin dolls. They also have painted-on eyes instead of inset eyes, and their hair is a solid block of plastic. (You can buy an optional head cap for $5 that allows you to use a brushable wig instead, though, if you prefer.)

3 sets of these dolls have been released so far, with more to come: Nature's Secret, School Hunting, and Teennar.

Each doll comes with a full outfit and some extra hands for posing with. BJDs tend to be more of a "make-your-own-character kit" vibe, so they often don't come with hair, eyes, clothes, or paint. These are ready-to-go right out of the box.

The doll also can fit into Pukipuki/Obitsu11 clothes, so it's easy to find or make extra outfits that will fit them. If you buy more than one doll, you can mix and match the hair and clothing, which is also fun. Again, I know that these aren't for everyone. But if you're looking for a cute ball-jointed doll that costs US$20-25 plus shipping, this is it. They're cute, they give you a good feel for how a ball-jointed body moves, and they're decent quality for the price. Plus, as of this writing (October 2022), they are working on a CENTAUR set, which should release early next year. (I am totally stoked--I love centaur dolls, even though they're really tricky to make clothes for.)

Harvest Tomatoes

Following up yesterday's Little Farmer Jun is the fruit of the harvest!

We continue on with the (many) figs that were inspired by Gong Jun's November 2022 Cosmopolitan Magazine shoot. There's a ton of them.

Outstanding! But, we're not here to talk about A+ purchasing decisions, we're here to talk about this little man:

This sweet little guy, wheelbarrowing his way across the Pacific to me. Safe and sound in his little polystyrene cocoon.

Like a number of figs in this series, there was absolutely no way this fig was going to stand up on its own. In this case, on the cart. It was too heavy towards the back and toppled right over when I tried it. Usually I can at least take a header pic if I prop the fig up against my backsplash there, but for this one I just immediately put it on a fig stand. It was just too unstable. I wasn't going to take any chances on the cart breaking!

I put a tiny bit of glue on the wheel and each of the ... uh ... wheelbarrow... stands? What are those called? Anyway, I glued that cart down, it's not going anywhere.

You can see we would have needed much wider, uh, stands in order for the cart to hold up the weight of that big ol' head.

Speaking of big ol' heads, I find Junjun's little khaki hat here adorable. It's like, fascinator size! Not to scale in the slightest, but ever so cute for it.

Look at all those beautiful tomatoes! I know people were incredulous at Junjun biting into a tomato for the photo shoot, but let me tell you. When I was a kid, I used to work at a local farmer's market on the weekends selling flowers with my uncle, and I would wander around the market when we had slow times. A great farm fresh tomato really is like nothing else - a glorious burst of flavor and juicy texture that literally tastes like summer. So you go on with that tomato, Junjun!

Tomato solidarity aside, I love how packed this cart is, it makes for a great visual presentation.

Junjun covered in tomatoes wasn't where I saw this mag shoot going, but like I said in yesterday's post, I don't even question this sort of stuff anymore. There's no denying the harmony of the red tomatoes with the cart and the contrast with his clothing is a great pop of color.

I really love how the fig maker designed the 3-D nature of his open shirt. This must have been a difficult fig to engineer, just given all the details here. His hair also looks fantastic - they really got those curving bangs that look so great in the photo shoot.

Speaking of details, here's a close up of all those tomatoes that wonderfully 3-D shirt. You can actually see the modeling on his abs there too! No detail spared for sure.

More detail of the other side of the cart. There is a LOT of tomatoes in that cart. Pour one out for the overworked and probably underpaid photographer assistants that have to set up these fashion shoots. What a perk though. I'd artfully place tomatoes around Gong Jun for free, no problem.

Here's a good view of how well this wheelbarrow was modeled. It may not stand up on its own, but it looks fantastic.

And the other side. I like the blue soles on his Hogan boots a whole lot.

Ok so Rhodri's first preference is Zevran's mother, which I go into detail in this ask- answer here, god bless that poor woman's soul.

Preference number two is someone Rhodri has personally always been dying to meet.

The tl;dr of it is: Great Uncle Ab was a man of myth and legend, recounted in sparkling odes to Rhodri via a family friend. He was the first person to make a cactus sing. He built a bridge entirely out of shoelaces. He sang the Kirkwall national anthem in front of the then-Viscount but, having forgotten the words, made them up on the spot. The anthem was changed immediately after.

Great Uncle Ab had apparently made an absolute fortune in the invention of epoxy resin, and used this to make toast sundials that were all the rage in the first decade of the Blessed Age. He managed to lose most of said fortune after hiding it in a few different spots and forgetting them all. Great Uncle Ab was a fucking marvel. Rhodri would have punted Dorian Pavus into a Korcari bog to meet Great Uncle Ab.

The story of how Great Uncle Ab is linked with the family below. It's a ramble.

Now, for a little context: Rhodri insisted, at age three, that she was going to do research like her father. When she wasn't watching her siblings, she was marching into the library to join him and do her own work.

Naturally, Aurelio was thrilled with her enthusiasm, but it's very hard to actually do the academia gig with a talkative toddler squirming in your lap. To help things along, he indulged her for about a week, giving her activities of progressive size until she submitted a compelling thesis on the Friday and 'graduated' Saturday.

(the thesis was a full-colour picture of the family that hangs in Aurelio's office to this day)

As a reward for her excellent work, Aurelio had promised that she got to have a research assistant to help her with her next projects, now that she was graduated and teeming with Terribly Important Ideas.

The research assistant in question was named Tabitha ('Auntie Tab' to Rhodri), who prior to her current position had sold books at the Hightown Market. Aurelio had become a very familiar face at her stall over the years, and she was regularly invited to come over. Auntie Tab was a good eighty years old when she declared to Aurelio that she'd have to close up shop, as it was wearing her out, and Magister Callistus announced to her that she would be moving in with them. Auntie Tab, who had lost all of her relatives a few decades earlier and lived alone, accepted with alacrity.

Auntie Tab, to no-one's surprise, was well cut-out for the academic life, and she and the three-year-old Rhodri had always gotten on like a house on fire. You can imagine how thrilled she was to find out that Auntie Tab was going to help out with Big and Important Projects.

Auntie Tab, who had raised three kids of her own (don't think on that too much), was a fantastic teacher, and in their Research Collection and Evaluation sessions often regaled Rhodri with tales of Great Uncle Ab. Tab and Ab.

Auntie Tab thought it'd be a good idea, seeing as Rhodri was a little slow to develop language, to encourage her vocabulary by using particularly grand descriptions of Great Uncle Ab and his thrilling pursuits. When Rhod was starting to trot out the big words, Tabitha wrote the stories down to teach her reading and writing; her grand thesis at four was the alphabet-- in both upper and lowercase, and reading aloud the story of how Great Uncle Ab invented the postal system after 5yo Auntie Tab (at the time a serial mail thief) pilfered unopened correspondence from the Viscount's writing desk, and Great Uncle Ab had to find an excuse to hand the letters back to him.

Ok now I just want to write stories about Tab and Ab's grand adventures. My condolences if you read all this, Bumbles, I'll end it here xD

So they could layer the battery plastic. So you can have an internal liner, and the external will be the traditional plastic. So the internal liner would act as the insulation.

And that's a problem with cars is the fluids empty out in accidents.... And that causes another hazard!!!!

So with the sensor system, they could draw fluids into retainer systems that are impact resistant. The system would still maintain a minimum coating But you don't need the excess fluid.... Yes, adding these components will bring up the weight.But I doubt if they need to be extremely heavy, so it should be minimal. But they can sense where the accident is coming from and then reallocate the fluids to a place where you know they're protected from the impact.... Yes you need a vacuum system. So again then I'll add some weight. But you can put the fluids in a protective area. Somewhere centralized on a vehicle. So that means during impact, the fluids won't add to any possible hazards to the humans, whether fire or chemical hazards. And won't leave chemical deposits on the roadway, preventing environmental issues.... So they really need to start thinking about car design better... 🤔 My house, they have some things right, but again, improving makes a difference.....
