STUDENTS! Come to our meeting to talk Student Debt
The Wisconsin People's Party sees the student debt crisis as a major problem in the US. Rising college costs and declining government funding has caused pain for young people and is discouraging them from going to college. We are wasting an entire generation of talent. The WPP supports forgiving student debt, making college affordable, and opposing privatization of education. See who the culprits are in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3MgUyIT7WU

I know his requests are a lot, but he only mentioned one way to stop it, you know *gestures trough the neck with a finger* which I know neither of us want, and he’s not going to help if he doesn’t have what he wants
“And that isn’t going to happen,” Dee informed, sighing. “Because that is cruel, even for him. And if we kill him we are just as much of a monster as he is.”

So while I was definitely online and prowling the Sailor Moon Fandom back in the early Usenet days, I never managed to actually discover newsgroups - my experience was limited to cruising Geocities sites and wandering wherever the WebRings would take me. What was Usenet like? That is, how did it work? Was it like an early BBS-style forum or something? A mailing list? A chatroom?
HEY LOOK IT’S A QUESTION GUARANTEED TO NOT MAKE ME FEEL OLD
Hmmmm. I suppose if I had to compare Usenet to anything, it’d be an old school BBs message board, only open to everyone rather than just whoever dialed in.
However, I recognize that if someoen doens’t know what usenet is then they also probably have no fucking idea what I mean by “old school BBs”. IT’S ENTIRELY POSSIBLE I’M CONFUSING YOU BY SAYING “DIALED IN”.
So think like a forum, only entirely text based. No graphics of any kind. It was basically that, where you would go to a newsgroup (think forum) that was about the subject you were interested in, and you could create messages that everyone could read and reply to, or reply to the messages of others.
Some groups were very strict about what could and couldn’t be posted there. Like, no social messages, only posts about that specific content, stuff like that. And I”m talking about the text group here, not the binaries, which were for posting files and such. But it was really up to the group to decide what did or didn’t happen there. It was all very community oriented.
alt.fan.sailor-moon (afsm) was really pretty open in that sense. While the main focus was Sailor Moon discussion, there was plenty of socializing and other off-topic stuff. We used to, in fact, preface our posts with [OT] before the subject line, marking it as off-topic, so people who didn’t want to see those kinds of posts could safely skip them.
Overall, it wasn’t too terribly different from a lot of what we have today, but at the same time entirely different in a way that’s difficult to really explain.
IF ANY OF THAT MADE ANY SENSE

Here’s the problem, Jacques needed to be stopped LONG before he worked for Salem
But who’s gonna stop him? Not Weiss apparently, not the white fang, even with a council seat Robyn could only conceivable do so much when the rest of the council is on Jacques’ side,
So as a result, it seems like all of jacques’ horrible labor practices that resulted in things like afsm’s brand or the dwarfs if illia’s parents didn’t matter until it helped Salem, since non if the heroes, not even Blake who claims to be a social activist, even tried to do anything about it until he worked for Salem
Weiss didn’t take diwn Jacques, she foiled Salem’s plan which coincidentally involved Jacques
I agree. As a deceitful scum of a human being who abused his family, monopolized the dust industry, and consistently mistreated his workers (showcasing his virulent racism), he needed to be stopped long before he was an accomplice of Watts, and by extension, Salem.

[ID: a black screen in which the word but is written in large white letters]
You are blaming the wrong people over allowing Jacques Schnee to get away with these atrocities. It was not a lack of effort on the part of the heroes, but lack of control within the society that let him rise in the first place.
Part 1: Atlas (The System)
Jacques Schnee committed many crimes, and ideally would have faced punishment for them at some point long before the election. So why didn’t he? Put as simply as possible - he was a very wealthy businessman working closely with government in the richest, most inequitable kingdom on Remnant.
Over the course of the Atlas Arc, and during the Weiss segments of volume 4, we get a few quotes showcasing just how close the SDC and Atlesian Military were. “You’ve been a trusted friend and ally to this family, James.” from Volume 4. “These drones report to the SDC, not the General” from Weiss in Volume 8, talking about robots that are otherwise identical to military bots.
The SDC worked in close partnership with the Military because they supplied Dust - the most powerful and versatile fuel/elemental/energy source there is. Because James holds two council seats as the head of Atlas Academy and the Military, he holds the most power over Atlas’ future and how it functions. The SDC is directly responsible for supplying hardlight dust for Atlas’ prisons, Atlas’ protective border, and heat for Mantle’s heating grid - something they need to survive for crying out loud. Ironwood had no issue working with the SDC because it directly benefited him - Atlas could be more secure and better armed. Add this into the mentality he so lovingly demonstrated in v7  - “What’s more important, the fate of the world or a few city blocks?” -  and we can easily see that Jimmy was willing to write off the un-ethicality of the company as something Atlas would endure and be better for.
We don’t know the inner workings of Atlas’ legal system - but we can safely assume the following. 1) The Atlesian Military oversees soliders, police, huntsmen, special operatives and other generally law enforcement folks. 2) Criminals are brought to trial for their crimes, as mentioned by Sleet in v7. Jacques Schnee is very rich, and he holds a lot of prestige as one of the Atlas Elite. Any cases brought against him for the mistreatment of his workers could potentially be settled out of court and out of the public eye so he can keep his  legal record as clean as his coat. (This last sentence may be projection due to playing a lot of Ace Attorney, but I am convinced that’s what he would do in that situation.)
It’s also entirely possible that Atlas is so rottenly racist that those crimes against the Faunus were not punishable, or not sensationally newsworthy enough to  provoke public outrage.
The system didn’t care about Adam, or Ilia, or Cinder, or any of the other lives ruined by the culture of hate toward people considered ‘beneath’ the Atlas ideal. The grandeur of having the best Dust company, or best hotel, or best military in the world came before any compassion toward the blue-collar work put in the work to make it happen.  (Collar is not a pun, it describes manual labor istg).
OF COURSE the protagonists cared about the abuse that Jacques Schnee inflicted upon the world. Of course Adam, Ilia, Whitley, Weiss, Cinder, etc mattered! The narrative says that they do matter, but Atlas’s culture drowns out their voices because they are children, they are Faunus, they are not worth the effort. This is an intentional in the writing of the show - Atlas is hypocritical and dangerous and powerful, and horrible people with power do horrible things.
No one had the potential to remove him until there was something concrete, something tangible, something so directly tied to the man and not the business that they could bust him on.
Part 2: Who couldn’t stop him and Why (Rebuttal)
The system wouldn’t stop him because Jacques was serving such a benefit to society with the excavation of Dust that his other misgivings were ignored. So why didn’t someone outside of the system stop him, you say?
Let’s start with Blake.
Blake is a social activist, and HAD BEEN FIGHTING THE SDC FOR YEARS PRIOR TO THE EVENTS OF THE SHOW. She knows firsthand, even better than Weiss, what the SDC has done to the Faunus and what they've gotten away with. She became burned out of all the raids and violence and abuse she suffered with the White Fang, but rather than become apathetic and numb, decided to try becoming a Huntress to fight for something noble and good - as opposed to vigilante justice.
Blake doesn't launch herself at Jacques' throat the first time she sees him in person because that wouldn't change anything. She knows it wouldn’t. She spent years stealing from SDC trains, burning racist shops, and opposing him openly (before she out as a Faunus, she was bad mouthing the SDC to the heiress herself). The system was so rotten that cutting the head off the snake with a mustache wouldn’t guarantee anything. What authority would Blake have to confront him? Its implied that huntsmen don’t have the exact same authority as police, since Weiss asks James if she’s even allowed to arrest Jacques. (Ace Ops excepting since they are given special authority by Ironwood).
Weiss was in no position to overthrow her father for the same reason - she is just a Huntress. She has insider information on his mistreatment of her family, but she’d have to make a strong case against, presumably, Jacques’ own lawyers, (again, Ace Attorney mind talking, if she tried to take him to court). Money talks in Atlas, it would be easy for Jacques to spin a narrative about how emotionally disturbed she is. The Schnees are sorta celebrities, and rich pricks love drama - its safe to assume she would get nowhere, especially once the racists learn she wants better working conditions for the Faunus.
Robyn tried, so hard, to fight the system from point of morality. Fighting for the under privileged because it was right. She knew her best shot at making real changes was to become a member of the council. She believed, once her chance at the council was ripped out from underneath her, that Jacques must have won with Ironwood’s interference. After all, it was ‘Ironwood’s Robot’ who killed her supporters that night. (Also supported by her surprise that Jacques didn’t know about Ironwood’s secret plan - she assumed they were in cahoots.)
Robyn was in a position to be opposing Jacques Schnee the hardest, being a well known face in Mantle, an adult capable of spending the necessary years to fight such systemic problems, and well loved by it’s people. But even she met with resistance by, you guessed it, the Atlesian Law. And we all know who the head of Atlesian Law enforcement is.
(and she still didn’t give up!! at her lowest, she stole from military vehicles to protect Mantle and to give a direct F U to the man with his head in the clouds! queen shit!)
And the council itself?
Only the council would have the ability to stop Jacques from monopolizing the dust industry, from his oversight and neglecting the dangers of dust mining and the impact it’s had on minority populations. But the council until the events of volume 7 was split, with James Ironwood having total control of the nation by virtue of being a Headmaster and General, and refusing to risk anything that might compromise Atlas’s status. Even if they wanted to fight the system from inside, they couldn’t because Ironwood held two seats, and any decision he we wanted to make would go his way or sit at an impasse (2-2) until they caved to his demands. “The council is so scared they’ll agree to whatever he wants...” - Pietro Polendina, V7C1.
The reason the council was listening to Jacques in v7, at the dinner party, was because they saw Ironwood as a bigger threat - they were tired of James doing whatever he pleased. If Jacques could help them take Ironwood down a peg, then that was progress. (Yay, politics!)
TL;DR
Jacques should have been stopped before it got the point where he needed to be busted for ties to election fraud/massacre/Salem. But the reason he wasn’t is because his industry is a huge part of Atlesian society, and he embodies all the ideals of Atlesian supremacy - which made him an ally of James Ironwood and by extension, the military. He has accumulated many crimes, but his money (from the monopoly of the SDC), his influence (dust being important to Atlesian society/military), and the culture he was raised in (high class/low class, the literal overshadowing of the less fortunate) made him virtually untouchable.
These posts, here and here, cover this same idea with a few additional points - that RWBY+Co shouldn’t be responsible for fixing all the societal problems while also trying to deal with someone planning to nuke the world... because that might be a higher priority.

afsms super random but what are your hcs for now Pen and Al like to kiss/cuddle?
Under a cut just because this post is like 900 words, but like, isn’t really nsfw. Unless you consider Maybe Too Much Biting While Making Out to be nsfw.
But yeah kissing involves lots of biting. Like, lots of people in Hell have sharp teeth—most people, by the looks of it?—so the mere fact that they have sharp teeth doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be inclined to use them; but like... these two, these two definitely do use them.
I can hear you asking "hey when you say bites do you actually mean hickeys?" and the answer is NO I mean bites! They draw blood. They're violent people.
We have been told that Sir Pent supposedly does have venom but we haven't yet been told how it works/what it does, so we have no idea whether or not he can like, consciously decide to turn off the venom when he bites—like the dude is a cobra/rattlesnake with a thousand eyeballs, he doesn’t have to follow real world snake rules—but if he can’t turn off the venom he’s just gonna. Have to bite carefully. It would be smarter for him not to bite at all but things happen in the heat of the moment and also Alastor's just a little bit of a glutton for pain so Alastor miiight also be encouraging biting despite knowing what will happen. Sometimes Alastor is woozy for a while after they make out. “Sorry about that.” “Worth it.”
With fangs like they both have, both of them just automatically leave bitemarks without even trying if they go past the lightest nibble. Alastor’s like “eh it’s a thing that happens, whatever” BUT Sir Pent is like “hey Alastor it looks like a drunk vampire tried three different times to latch onto your neck. ... Wear your shirt collar low tomorrow, I want everyone to see that you let me tear up your throat."
Because, listen. Above all else, Sir Pent is two things: power-hungry and image-focused. There is power that comes with being the only guy in hell (or anywhere else) that The Radio Demon has ever made himself vulnerable to. And oh, boy, does Sir Pent feel like the sexiest badass motherfucker in the nine circles when the public at large gets presented with a periodic visual reminder that every demon's personal bogeyman is happy to serve as Sir Pentious's chew toy. And if Alastor is the scariest thing in Hell, well, what does that make the one person who can make him bleed?
In response to this, Alastor goes "sometimes it's hilarious how big your ego can get," while he cheerily adjusts his collar to display last night's bites because he's never going to be opposed to making Sir Pent's big ego even bigger.
(Of course, Alastor leaves bite marks too, but doesn't ask Sir Pent to show them off. Sure, that might leave people with the inadvertent impression that Alastor's the only one getting marked up. But what does Alastor care what people think? He's every demon's personal bogeyman.)
And besides that, their kissing habits are mostly normal. What else do I have tho.
Alastor is more into licking than most people are. Not just using-the-tip-of-the-tongue-during-kisses licking either, just like full flat-tongued MLEM, and it’s gross.
When Sir Pent is doing that quick-peck-kiss-while-in-a-hurry thing people do, he substitutes in a snake-tongue-flick instead and just sorta brush Alastor's face with the forked tips. Alastor's pretty sure Sir Pent doesn't notice he does it and Alastor is never going to tell him in case he stops when he's conscious of it.
And that's it, that's all I've got on kissing, except for one very special super secret surprise that I'm not sharing because it'd be a spoiler for the slow burn fic.
On to cuddling!
Sir Pent's #1 cuddling instinct is "if I love it then I will wrap myself around it as many times as physically possible." Alastor's #1 cuddling instinct is "if I am cornered and/or restrained without constant, uninterrupted, easy access to an immediate exit route, then I will create an exit route, messily, through the nearest fleshy body."
Understandably, this causes a few problems.
(Part—although not all—of Alastor's touch-aversion is being-trapped/restrained-aversion. Which is why he's more okay with touching other people than he is with being touched by other people. If someone wraps an arm around his shoulders, then he's Trapped. If HE wraps an arm around someone else's shoulders, then THEY'RE trapped and he can let go and escape at any time. Sir Pent is only a partial exception to this aversion. He can flop on top of Alastor—especially if he distracts Alastor from the fact that he’s pinned down—but coiling around him is straight out.)
What they eventually figure out works best for them both is Sir Pent curling up in a U-shape or O-shape and Alastor sitting/lying in the dip between Sir Pent's coils. (Like this or this, or imagine if this thing was them instead of an ad for a swimming pool inflatable thing.) That way, Sir Pent still feels thoroughly coiled around Alastor from below; but Alastor's arms and legs are still free and so he feels like he can escape no problem, he just needs to push himself up and out of the nest of snake coils.
Most of their cuddles will be things like that that let Sir Pent feel like he's properly wrapping up Alastor and still let Alastor feel like he can get out without trouble.
Besides all that, there's occasional more normal cuddles as the situation calls for—flopping their legs/tail across each other's laps on the couch to watch a movie, things like that.
Occasionally, in his sleep, Alastor will get really extremely super clingy. More common after stressful days or long separations. He'll roll over, maybe get half on top of Sir Pent , and wrap anything around Sir Pent he can—arms, legs, weird shadow tendrils, etc. Sir Pent has absolutely no problem with this. He takes it as an excuse to get more clingy himself, with the justification that Alastor probably wants that, probably, even though he's asleep and can’t say so. So far Sir Pent's been right.
