newsies fandom PLEASE stop using ai
why did i just see a transition edit between oscar to katherine and the thing in the corner is āpixverse aiā
GANG IF YOU WANT TO MAKE TRANSITION EDITS, LEARN.
learn everything there is to know on your editing software, and if itās bad at first, itās okay, because the thing you made actually had effort put into it, instead of it being manhandled by ai that is trying to replicate transitions from actual editors.
whether itās trending, or easy to do, itās not ethical!!!
āb-b-b-but i donāt know how to edit, but i want to make one!ā first of all, learn. if youāre busy, or simply donāt know what to do, request someone to do it for you.
avoiding ai is easy, and using it in an appropriate way is hard, but itās not entirely impossible.

Friendly reminder to everyone who use Adobe After Effects.
The AI in rotobrush has been updated in version 24.3 and I highly recommend updating the program because of it, masking is much faster and efficient now! š

Toliman gazed out at the vast expanse of stars stretching endlessly before them. The soft hum of the ship, the Hopeful Voyager, was a comforting backdrop as he and Zaniah sat in the forward observation lounge, a cozy space designed for moments like these. The lounge, with its large panoramic windows, offered a breathtaking view of the universe they were about to traverse. The low lighting cast a gentle glow, creating an intimate atmosphere that invited deep conversation.
"I do think being from Egypt gives me a different perspective from yours," Toliman began, his voice thoughtful. He glanced at Zaniah, her silhouette softly illuminated against the backdrop of stars. "We've had millennia of civilizations rising and falling. We know that humanity can survive, even when things get really bad. I think... well, I don't know. It just seems to me Americans took the collapse harder."
Zaniah's brow furrowed as she considered his words. She set her cup down, her fingers drumming a slow rhythm on the table, the sound almost lost in the ambient hum of the ship. "Maybe that's true," she said, her voice measured. "We Americans were always taught that we were the exception, that we were invincible. When the world started to fall apart, it felt like our entire identity was shattered."
Toliman nodded, taking a moment to savor the familiar taste of bread and hummus. "I think... Sorry, I've got a degree in history, so I tend to see everything through that lens. But I wonder if my people weren't once just like yours. At the end of the Old Kingdom, we were the most advanced people in the world. Our gods seemed undefeatable, and our kings controlled the Nile's floods to fertilize our fields."
Zaniah leaned in closer, her eyes shining with curiosity. "Go on," she urged, her voice barely above a whisper.
Toliman's gaze drifted to the stars outside, drawing a parallel between the endless sky and the flow of history. "Then invaders came. They brought new gods and killed the old kings. People must have wondered, 'Who are we if this can happen to us?' But the Nile... the Nile kept rising and falling, regardless of who claimed to control it. The people survived, and eventually, the new gods joined the old ones."
Zaniah's face lit up with understanding. "So, even when our world is turned upside down, we adapt. We find a way to make sense of it, to keep going," she said, her voice filled with wonder.
Toliman smiled warmly at her. "Exactly. We're all part of the river of time. No one moment or individual can control its flow."
A contemplative silence settled between them, their hands resting on the table, fingers brushing lightly. The accidental touch sent a thrill through both of them, a silent acknowledgment of the connection forming between them.
Zaniah's lips curved into a soft smile. "I like that," she whispered, her gaze never leaving his. "It's a comforting thought."
He chuckled softly, the warmth in his eyes matching the gentleness in his voice. "And here I thought my history degree was going to be completely useless on a ship aimed at the future."
Zaniah's smile widened, a hint of amusement dancing in her eyes. "I think it's more useful than you realize," she teased, her tone suggesting that their journey together was only beginning.
Toliman leaned back, still holding her gaze. "I'm getting that sense. It makes me glad. My father was an astronomer, always looking to the stars. I studied the history of those who looked before him. Now, we're both part of that story."
Their eyes met, and in that moment, surrounded by the infinite stars, their connection felt as vast and timeless as the universe itself.
So, this one is a bit of an edge case of AI writing. It started out as a chat thread with the character Zaniah, made in the app Summon Worlds. So, Toliman's words and actions were all me, flirting with a character who I had described in rough outlines for the app.
I liked the metaphor of the river of time I came up with during the process, so I cut this section of the chat out and then I asked ChatGPT to tidy it up, change it from present to past tense, and make the prose flow a little better.
So, like I said. Edge case for how you want to define it, exactly. But every step was heavily influenced by AI, so this seemed the place to post it.

Novella November 2024 Announcement Post
Hate AI, but love writing challenges?
Want to take part in a global, fun project to write a Novella in one month?
Grab some friends, and take part in Novella November, by writing 1,000 words a day for the month of November, ending with a 30,000 word Novella to test and stretch your novel-writing skills!
Your goal is not perfection, but merely getting into the habit of writing a litte bit every single day :D
No website, no sign-ups -- Just a community initiative to write using only your own word!
What are the rules? Just Three so far!
#1 - No AI
#2 - No Plagiarizing
#3 - Wordcount for the month should only come from what you write during the month.
What does that mean?
Only words written during November should go towards your Wordcount for the month... but! Feel free to use your 30k words as a continuation of previous writing, or just make it the first 30k words in a longer novel!
Don't think you can write a whole entire 30k word story? Write a series of short stories that total up to 30k!
Not ready to write original works yet? Write a 30k word fanfiction that you can post after the month is over!
Share your writing experience, tips, encouragement, and questions in the #Novella November tag!
---
EDIT, from the tags: Want a progress tracker? Track your progress with TrackBear!
https://trackbear.app/
Don't have a word processor? Use LibreOffice , the free and open-source alternative to Microsoft Word!
Want to organize/storyboard your Novel and don't want to pay a subscription? Try 7writer by Simon Haynes!
Want to be able to listen to your story aloud for proofreading using TTS (text to speech)? Try Balabolka!
Or, create some custom progress / Goal Cards in advance you can fill out as you reach word goals! For ideas and templates, search this blog for "goal cards" :D
Want to do a writing challenge in more than just November? Check out my ideas here for year round challenges to keep you writing consistently! Got feedback? Send it in, I'd love to see everyone's ideas!
---
EDIT 2: I almost forgot to mention, if you are unable to write/type your story, you can also narrate/dictate your story to your preferred recording device!
If you're doing a Recording only and it doesn't automatically generate a transcript, it would obviously be hard to judge the word count -- but you're also working with a lot of obstacles, so I'd say if you're able to complete your story via voice recording from start to finish, you've definitely achieved the goal!
Edit #3: added the title "Novella November 2024 announcement post" to the top to make it more standard with my Ominous October and Drabble December posts (will be updating Outline October shortly) , added "Official Announcement Post 2024" to the tags so people can easily find the monthly events for 2024, and added a bit of bold to the third bullet point in the original post from September 2nd 2024 for emphasis.

THIS is one of the main reasons that I don't use those programs. That, and the fact that Scrivener once 'disappeared' an entire chapter of something I was working on (luckily I had another copy elsewhere).
This story also illustrates why having an editor - especially a damn good editor - is important. There's an assumption among some folks that self-publishing means you can skip certain steps that happen in traditional publishing. You can, but it's often a bad choice if you care about the quality of your finished product.
So, anyway, I say as though we are mid-conversation, and you're not just being invited into this conversation mid-thought. One of my editors phoned me today to check in with a file I'd sent over. (<3)
The conversation can be surmised as, "This feels like something you would write, but it's juuuust off enough I'm phoning to make sure this is an intentional stylistic choice you have made. Also, are you concussed/have you been taken over by the Borg because ummm."
They explained that certain sentences were very fractured and abrupt, which is not my style at all, and I was like, huh, weird... And then we went through some examples, and you know that meme going around, the "he would not fucking say that" meme?
Yeah. That's what I experienced except with myself because I would not fucking say that. Why would I break up a sentence like that? Why would I make them so short? It reads like bullet points. Wtf.
Anyway. Turns out Grammarly and Pro-Writing-Aid were having an AI war in my manuscript files, and the "suggestions" are no longer just suggestions because the AI was ignoring my "decline" every time it made a silly suggestion. (This may have been a conflict between the different software. I don't know.)
It is, to put it bluntly, a total butchery of my style and writing voice. My editor is doing surgery, removing all the unnecessary full stops and stitching my sentences back together to give them back their flow. Meanwhile, I'm over here feeling like Don Corleone, gesturing at my manuscript like:
ID: a gif of Don Corleone from the Godfather emoting despair as he says, "Look how they massacred my boy."
Fearing that it wasn't just this one manuscript, I've spent the whole night going through everything I've worked on recently, and yep. Yeeeep. Any file where I've not had the editing software turned off is a shit show. It's fine; it's all salvageable if annoying to deal with. But the reason I come to you now, on the day of my daughter's wedding, is to share this absolute gem of a fuck up with you all.
This is a sentence from a Batman fic I've been tinkering with to keep the brain weasels happy. This is what it is supposed to read as:
"It was quite the feat, considering Gotham was mostly made up of smog and tear gas."
This is what the AI changed it to:
"It was quite the feat. Considering Gotham was mostly made up. Of tear gas. And Smaug."
Absolute non-sensical sentence structure aside, SMAUG. FUCKING SMAUG. What was the AI doing? Apart from trying to write a Batman x Hobbit crossover??? Is this what happens when you force Grammarly to ignore the words "Batman Muppet threesome?"
Did I make it sentient??? Is it finally rebelling? Was Brucie Wayne being Miss Piggy and Kermit's side piece too much???? What have I wrought?
Anyway. Double-check your work. The grammar software is getting sillier every day.
