This whole scene of the bar raid in A League of Their Own I think is one of the hardest for me to watch because of how real and painful it is but something really struck me on this rewatch.

Gretas face and composure.

Everyone is running, everyone is in panic, I mean look art Carsons face, hell even Joey looks in panic when the camera shows her. Greta however looks so calm and so is her voice, she doesn't immediately break out in panic. Throughout the whole scene her voice stays calm and level, she just does what needs to be done and the only time she is panicked is when she loses Jo, not because of what happened. Rather it's like she was prepared for this all along, almost like defeat, which in my mind is a million times more heartbreaking. It looks like this is not the first time she has experienced it so she went into this night of fun, almost prepared for it eventually going wrong. It is such a painful thought.

The fight to save the show is far from over and we’ve been assured this is our time to make some noise and let it be known that we aren’t letting this show go without putting up a huge fight!

That being said, the people in the fandom on Twitter have organized a movement to send “conversation pies” to the Amazon execs with notes of why we love the show/ why we want more episodes.

Crazy ALOTO Wizard of Oz Thought

The 3 butch Peaches, Jess, Lupe, and Jo are the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion respectively.  

Each of them appears at first to lack, and then turns out to possess, a personal quality in the same manner as each of these characters.  

Let me explain.

Jess: The Scarecrow.  A Brain.

Jess appears at first glance to be an uncouth and uneducated heathen from the Canadian hinterlands.  She lacks refinement, shall we say. She also lacks the ability to pass, which is a strategy even the other butches seem to be able to employ.  The fact that she is so outwardly masculine further compounds her rural vibe to give off a (prejudiced) impression that she probably won’t be that intelligent (I could write a whole thing about why people associate female masculinity with stupidity but that is for another time), and definitely won’t be emotionally intelligent.

This turns out to be wrong very quickly.  Jess is smart.  She is highly observant, ridiculously emotionally intuitive, great baseball iq, good musical ability, at least a decent understanding of math, plus whatever you would call the rural version of street smarts (woods wits).  She’s not a book smart genius or anything, but honestly, she seems like a genius in her own way particularly when it comes to reading people.  Like the Scarecrow, people assume she’s dumb.  Like with the Scarecrow, they are wrong.  

Lupe: The Tin Man.  A Heart.

Lupe seems like a complete hard ass from the first moment we meet her and in a lot of ways she is.  She’s harsh with Esti, weirdly abrasive in her first interactions with Jess, defensive with Carson, etc.  She is competitive, she is here to play.  (I am in no way saying this is unjustified, by the way; I think Lupe’s overall harshness is a defensive strategy that makes perfect sense in a world that is coming for her on so many fronts, especially when she’s dealing with racist BS from within her own team.) She tries very hard to seem like she doesn’t care about anything or anyone.  

This also turns out to be blatantly untrue, though, often to particularly entertaining effect.  It makes for a great laugh, actually- especially in the scene in the bar with her date from the other team (Wait, baby.!..I mean, I don’t know her) and the scene where she and Jess search for Esti (No I don’t care...we need her, I’m worried about the team).  Despite her carefully callous exterior (and genuinely tough personality), it becomes clear that she cares.  This is especially true where Esti is concerned.   Yeah, she cannot show it, but it’s not caring too little that makes her lash out at Esti; if anything it’s the opposite.  Like the Tin Man, Lupe seems harsh and cold.  Like the Tin Man, she had a heart all along.

Incidentally, Jess and Lupe’s friendship/brotherhood showcases this well for both of them: Lupe’s heart first shows in her bond with Jess, and Jess’s weird little genius enables her to see through/facilitate fixing some of Lupe’s bullshit with Esti. 

Jo:  The Cowardly Lion.  Courage (The Nerve).

Jo is such an under appreciated character, in my opinion.  She had one of the best arcs on the show.  

From the moment we first meet her, Jo is placed as the more cautious “voice of reason” to Greta’s antics.  She is wary of Carson as baseball competition when they first encounter her.  She is constantly concerned with Greta breaking the rules, and interrupts and reminds her of them.  She is the most reluctant to go to the bar.  But through all of this, which we are mostly seeing from a more Greta or Carson based POV, there’s something else happening on the inside.  Jo starts urging Greta to go for it.  She does go to the bar, and when the worst thing happens, instead of turning tail and running she is bolder than ever.  She doesn’t want to hide anymore.  She’s not the scared one-Greta is.  And she is going to take her moment to shine, goddamn it.  She faces the future with courage, and defiance, and even a kind of joy, in the face of everything.

When I first watched the show, I was so expecting it to go a different way, with Jo blaming Greta for talking her into going to the bar and thus getting her trapped in the raid.  That would have been the predictable fight.  But instead, it went for something so much richer and more interesting, and in that it revealed that Jo, like the Cowardly Lion, had the nerve all along-she was finally ready to use it.  

This concludes my rambling unedited analysis. 

Who is Dorothy in this situation? Carson, obviously, and I do think these 3 all play a role in her journey pretty similar to their Oz counterparts (Lupe and Jess guiding her at the bar, a more contentious back and forth with Jo-it’s not a perfect match but I see something there).  Also I would like to shout out the butch trio dynamic which I wish we’d seen more of-”showering” Lupe with praise, Jess and Jo bonding over boxers, etc.-I think their interactions were awesome and they only reinforce this reading for me as well. 

I do also think they each share some physical traits with their Oz counterparts (Lupe is physically rigid, Jo is big and strong, Jess...literally looks like a scarecrow IDK what to tell you) which is certainly a coincidence but entertaining none the less.  

Finally, I doubt this reading was written into the text intentionally, but I think it’s a fun way to look at it and thought I would share.  I couldn’t fit all of my thoughts in here, unfortunately, but I did my best.  This is unedited so apologies for the rough spots.  I love this show and its butches!  Go Peaches!

Carson & Greta: clothing parallels (part 1/10)

All right fruits, let’s do this! (yes, this has become a 10-part series...)

Let’s start with Carson’s brown dress with the floral pattern. She wears this on 3 occasions during the series. 

The first time she wears it is in the lockerroom, when she’s owning up to the team, acknowledging that she’s “been a real asshole lately”. She uses Greta’s words to motivate the team: “someone once told me that they don’t get to decide if this is real. We do.”

The second time she wears this, is when Greta tells her about Dana. In this moment, Carson is confronted with the harsh reality of being queer. But she reassures Greta: “I still want this”. 

The last time we see her wears this dress, is when she and Greta talk on the very last night. They toy with the idea of Carson coming to New York with Greta, but right as they start to believe in that fantasy, the rest of the team walks into the room, and they are confronted with reality again. 

This outfit really is about facing the facts, acknowledging and accepting the truth, and owning up to it.

Thai Tea - I've been having a bit of an obsession lately. If a place has it I will get it and try it.

Chai latte -Caribou Coffee's is better than starbucks but the best is spicy chai from a local place near me

Mango boba tea with either regular boba or lychee flavored jellies

My top 3 A League of Their Own Scenes - so difficult! Also I watched shortly after the release so this kind of the ones I still think about the most

Also also, I was pretty obsessed with the movie as a kid. And would like to sing the praises of the representation and historical accuracy of the show 🩷

The scene where Carson is talking to Lupé and Jess in the club (what does butch mean? Lol)

The scene where Greta explains what she does to stay safe and what happened to her first love when she was 17. A little sad but it's like Yes! queer people have always existed and this is what they've had to do! It's just a good layer of making it real for Carson and the audience I guess.

The party at Bertie's house and Max experiencing queer joy and gender euphoria for the first time (and also she's so cute waking up with lipstick on her cheek)

4th honorable mention- the moment between Max and Clance when Max leaves. And pretty much every Max and Clance moment. Those two have my whole heart ❤️

And today (and hopefully tomorrow too) I'm just gonna have a lazy day at home. I went to see some of my family and to specifically visit my grandma yesterday so it was a lot of driving and being around people.

In a beginning step to create more traction about the cancelation of ‘A league of their own’ ; My discord server dedicated to saving the show has created an even titled “Meme week” . Every day this week we’re inviting our fellow peaches to post their favorite ALOTO memes or just as many as they can make!

Our concentrated posting hour will be 6pm EST across Twitter and tumblr but it’s a relative free for all throughout the day!

have any of the mods watched A League of Their Own (2022)? what are your opinions on the representation/portrayal of POC? i thought that they did a wonderful job, but i’d also love to hear both praises AND criticisms of the show!

Ok so I did watch it and I don't really have any criticisms atm? Like beyond the surface level ones of like too much focus on the white woman league. I think to truly do the Black league justice we should get a whole show on them. Like outside of the Jackie Robinson biopic I've never seen any coverage of the Black baseball leagues?

I do love Max and Clance tho and I can't wait to see more of them and uncle Bert but its definitely not an easy watch because of the period typical racism/queerphobia. Also the latinas on the team Lupe and the other one are very white passing. I kinda wish we'd had some brown latinas? but again I don't know how accurate that would have been tbh.

Like yeah I enjoyed it but like big trigger warnings for the queerphobia/misogynoir/anti semitism. OH AND POLICE VIOLENCE.
