fanart for a scene in @nerdydowntherabbithole 's Taking Life As Is on AO3 !! a scene early on in the fanfic that sounded so cool it gripped me with inspiration, where a vulture swoops down and gets fucking got by a leviathan while our dear protagonists look on in horror of the beautiful brutality of mother nature happening right in front of them! dont you love it when you leave your rotting corpse behind and immediately get hit with the existential horror of almost dying and the primal fear of seeing something that much bigger than you and realising your fragility when you were once a godlike being above such lowly thoughts and struggles? anyway.

some details and thoughts !! :

-just before this scene, sugar (survivor's name in this fic) hunted and ate a salamander, so i included it in this here drawin too !! hell yeah esoteric fic-accurate details -(pro tip for any artists out there; if you want to push something into the background, gradient overlays are your friend. also, dont forget to check your values. outline your characters if they aren't popping out of the background enough) -in other, not fic-accurate detail,, moon's dress and marks. i think in the fic, moon's dress is more like,, an actual dress with sleeves and such. but also like, i do what i want and i want something thats barely a dress so i can show off my anatomy/mechanical bits art skills. i dont care if its not canon compliant im calling rule of cool -whoops i forgor the wires uhh shit nevermind it would cover the cool bits anyway whatever -also, while i am proud of the vulture and leviathan, they both used reference. like, i sketched them out yeah, but also the sketch was mostly done by staring at a reference the whole time and overlaying it on the canvas as needed when the drawing looked a little too off. so if you look at this and think 'aw man this guys too good at drawing i could never draw a vulture/leviathan/background/whateverthefuck like that' youre wrong. use references and get better at art by referencing references -shoutout to the miraheze wiki btw for supplying most of my references for this. fandom wiki could never

this fic holds a special place in my heart. like, i dont agree with it on a lot of things (how the cycle works, time between slugcat campaigns, how rot works, etc), but its very internally consistent and i like how all the characters are written. i really do like how, despite all the bickering, the iterators really do care for each other and love each other. i like that the blame isn't pushed just to pebbles, the acknowledgement of there being a lot of nuance and complications in the whole situation. i like the worldbuilding, nsh's wetland-esque biome, srs's gleaming glass beaches, the different interesting fauna/flora, slugcat society worldbuilding, the fucking trains hell yes trains.

most of all though, i love the authors dedication to getting a happy ending. no one left behind. all the iterators in the local group are getting freed (except for innocence but thats a different thing) all the slugcats are alive and doing well (even artificer's kids!!). and even though the fic throws the characters around, bad things happen, steps backward are taken,,, there is almost a palatable message that no matter what, things will be okay. artificer did bad and its acknowledged with visible consequences (scavenger temple route, which mightve made things so much easier on the route to nsh) but she still gets her kids back. hunter had her rot cured and even got some sick new upgrades but still struggles with overexertion and moments of weakness. both pebbles and moon have ptsd from the rot and the rain respectively and its handled reasonably well, not even mentioning the survivors guilt and learned helplessness on nsh and the whole,, guilt from causing this whole fiasco and the feeling of it being all their fault from srs,,,, , ,,,

i dont know. i just really like how dedicated the fic is to showing the realistic consequences of the unforgiving and brutal world of rain world and weaving it into a story of forgiveness and freedom. there are struggles but the heroes will still win and get to go home happy. its cathartic. i love it a lot.

Let's imagine Harry has no idea who you are in the beginning

Some random person that's always seen drawing, painting, creating something.

He's seen some of your works hung around Auradon prep in expensive looking frames

He doesn't approach you for a while, in fact Gil is the first to meet you

Gil takes the same art course as you so you meet there when Gil had a bit of a paint disaster

Harry was originally cautious around you because he thought you'd be some stuck up art critique kind of person who was going to complain about Gil

But when you instead explain that you could see what he was trying to do but the actual execution of it wasn't great , Harry laughed with you

Overall your first meet was a positive one that was the beginning of a laughter filled relationship

Harry would always see you sat somewhere, in some weird position, scribbling away in your sketchbook

He eventually spots what you are drawing, or better yet who.

Him

He crashes.

All thoughts, Gone.

He's just staring at it for a good 5 minutes before you have to click your fingers in front of his face to wake him up.

"H- How, no, why are ye drawin' meh?" Heat rises to his cheeks and he slowly brings his thoughts back to Earth.

He'd already had been developing feelings for you since you two met. I mean you were nice to his friends, kind to him, he let you meet his sisters at one point and they seemed to even like you. You are fun to be around, you check that he's taking care of himself, you make sure he's not too bashed up from the sports he plays. What isn't there to like?

"You have a pretty face, nice to draw." He takes note of the blush that grows on your cheeks and the way you look off to the side with a shy smile growing. "I draw the people I like, the people I'm closest to."

His heart almost stops. Did you just try to kill him?! 'cause clearly you aren't aware of the way you make him feel.

I headcannon Harry to be Pansexual, as a pan person myself, so he was kinda well known on the Isle for being able to flirt with anyone he wanted for various reasons

But let me tell you, not once had he had the air knocked out of his chest from a few simple words.

You take his silence the wrong way and begin packing your things to go find somewhere to wallow in your shame, but Harry just drops to his knees in front of you.

"Please, draw meh, whenever ye want to." He is on his knees looking at you with the happiest smile he can muster and almost puppy like wonder in his eyes. "I'll be yours, if you'll be mine?"

Okay that bit came out a little too easy to him, he didn't really mean for that to happen.

But he can't complain since you agreed!

Everything you create for him, he treats like it's the most fragile item he's ever come in contact with

He's always showing it off though he's so appreciative of everything you do so he wants to show the entire world

When you feel down for not feeling your art is good enough, he's oddly prepared to show every bit of art you've ever given him with reasons on what makes it perfect to him

He may as well be prepared with a PowerPoint presentation on every one of your works he's seen

I fact he's probably prepared one somewhere, pictures, effects, transitions, the whole shebang!

He draws too, almost forgot to mention. I've got a little headcanon of him always doodling pirates on cool adventures when he was younger on the isle. I also like to imagine that there was a time where Evie and Harry liked to draw together but Evie drew Princesses and dress designs and Harry drew pirates which created some childish clashing between the two. So they'd stopped almost as soon as they started their little doodle hangouts

He gives you pictures of you in multiple different styles, each time it seems like he's trying to depict you as an angel of sorts

He also draws the Uma and the crew but he comes to check that he got everyone right with you

He may or may not let you take pictures of him for references as long as he can do the same with you, he's also pretty good at photography so he loves getting new picture of you with some fantastical background making you stand out so much more

Uma knew who you were when she arrived in Auradon, she'd heard your music played at cotillion

She couldn't complain about it, it wasnt her usual style but it was new and she liked that

When she had officially arrived she would notice you all around

Playing music for parties, proper events, even just around the school

Despite her not meeting you she subconsciously finds her way to you

She listens out for you whenever she can

She ends up actually meeting you thought Evie

Evie was designing everyone's outfits for a party so your fitting time overlapped into Uma's time. Uma didn't mind and in fact took the opportunity to tell you that she'd heard you around but hadn't had the chance to meet you

From then, you became quick friends.

Her feelings developed the more time she spent with you, she just loves listening to your music

She'd like to learn an instrument that would compliment your style of music so you could play together

She helps you with lyrics whenever you need the help

She first finds out that you write songs about your experiences and the people around you by looking at the lyrics for some of your songs

She finds it sweet that although you don't directly mention people, you can share the way you feel to them to those who will listen

But then she finds a song that's for her

I mean who else would it be for, she's the person you spend most of your time with and she's the pretty pirate with blue hair

She definitely looks over the lyrics and gets so giddy that she's kicking her feet with glee, when you walk in and see her smiling at the page she doesn't stop smiling

She immediately asks what you mean and when you tell her she latches onto you

Basically, she asks you out right then and there

Who are you to deny her? Of course you accept

So I went dumpster diving in my tablet for the first lamb I ever drew and WOW... I found a lot of sketches I really don't plan on revisiting. I am jsut gonna dump them below the cut for people to see!! Some of it is lore related, some of it is shit I ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HATE, but IDC!!! Anyway, here is the earliest drawin I have of me drawing the lamb!! I am going to write a comment under a lot of these to add context to them.

more narinder and brear. they're not romantically interested in each other, but he is absolutely head over heels for brear, their brother, and the kids. they even call him dad sometimes.

kallamar and leshy before their crowns. the scene i have related to this isn't happening anymore, but it was leshy begging to be taught to swim.

another "the one who baby sits" doodle. the bishops all came into the cult with a very good repuation thanks to narinder. he likes to tell the kids of the cult stories about how amazing his siblings were. at first, it was just to nobre and brejul with stories about leshy(he missed leshy a lot even though he was still mad at him, and the two reminded narinder of his time with leshy), but then it escalated into him hosting storytimes with larger groups after they started repeating some of the stories he'd tell them.

unfinsihed stuff about with the lamb and thier mom. their mom wasn't afraid of the bishops at all, but knew that they were a still a threat to her and her child's life. the lamb did NOT care for anyone thier mom didn't approve of/enthusiastically liked. they were much more afraid of the bishops than their mother.

im still workong on BTG shit, and i post a little bit of the characters on here even tho the comics are going to be posted elsewhere. they have a "crownlike" beak, but a body part. there's different creatures who became gods through different ways; crowns are one way but their power is stuck with the crown and they are considered extremely weak compared to other gods. i wont blabber on about it tho.

so many sketches has random lines through em because i work with a tablet,,, i hate it. anyway, narinder and kallamar everybody!

Not a request per say, but how do you draw the bug fables gang so well? I've tried to draw some fanart myself but for the life of me I cannot get Kabbu's head and body or Leif's head shape and eye placement right. I know breaking them down into their basic shapes is best to start but for some reason when I try to draw them my brain and my hand just go ????? (which is a little discouraging considering the art style of bug fables is honestly really simple). Any pointers you could give? Is it just practice, or do you have a general way of drawing them that you expand upon with your own style?

im not a tutorials guy and I mega suck at words but I like helping

the style might be simple but maybe it doesnt feel good to draw it 1 to 1 and it ends up frustrating u/looking wrong. at least thats my case, I had to translate it and add a lil bit of my things

I ended up grabbing Leif's strawberry head and flipping it upwards to make him more appealing to my eyes, it also enhances the bug feel also the tuff of hair. I do that a lot w characters generally had nothin on the top of their heads but are fluffy. it feels like a complete look to me

Im not super anal about where I put his eyes, if it looks good then is good, at some point u gotta say 'who give a shit'. but if u really wanna be perfect about it I guess you could grab a strawberry, put some googly eyes on it and rotate it

Kabbu's profile is how I do profiles in general like I dont do detailed the division between the nose and lips.

sorry if this doesnt help at all, I drew them a ton until I got to an adaption I liked, so I guess in the end it does have to do with practice

I LOVE HIM MY BOY!! if you havent seen @wouldntyou-liketoknow 's (the creator of Cruz) post ab him (you should XD), he's the guy that calls you to clean the Late Night Mop house! it was made as a gift for @sammys-magical-au and i was tagged a little after, and i have since fallen in love with him XD what can i say, i love spooky characters ♥️

i cant promise anything (cause im all over the place all the time) but i wanna remake/redisign a lot of the other lix egos, especially after making Cruz so detailed, so ill be on that!

i thought of a lot of stuff ab Cruz, so more lore under the read more!!

i managed to stick a lot of artifacts on him XD his two necklaces (which one has weird creature teeth if its not clear in my drawin), his bracelet with the red crystal, the arrow tips on his belt and his bag which not only has the pocketwatch attached but it also helps to take his spooky books and papers wherever he goes!

he has so much stuff he carries XD his bag, his violin case, his cat... i think that he wouldnt like to stay in one place for too long, so he's always ready to get up and leave.

im probably on some fbi list after looking this up, but there are some mp3 players that cant be tracked and i gave Cruz one of them! i dont like policing what people think characters listen to, so what he does listen to is up to your imagination!

his cat, Macaroon, can shape shift to look more normal! i put his "normal" colors in the ref. however, he does feel more comfortable when around Cruz so near his owner he looks his weird red way!

finally, his tattoos! the four eyes melting into each other idea was in @wouldntyou-liketoknow 's description of Cruz, but i changed it up a little so that the four eyes represent the other four spooky lix egos! the spider for spideyboy!lix, the pink and green glitched one with smoke for shadow!lix, the green flower eye for cryprid!lix and the one at the bottom with teeth for lunky! i like to think they've had some interaction :)

the back tattoo was inspired by the music videos of kikuo songs, especially 'kara kara kara no kara' and 'hole dwelling' , which are both spooky songs that i love!

id talk ab the chest tattoo, but there wasnt a looot of thought gone into it, i just wanted it to look like a protection symbol that turns weird at the bottom.

like i wrote on the ref, i wish i couldve showed his tattoos more on his design, but i cant think of any clothing that wouldnt look weird to show them XD, but i did think ab giving him a black sleeveless turtleneck shirt (like the one he has but sleeveless) and a thinner robe thing to show off the arm tattoo, so u can think of that as a secondary outfit XD

if i remake the other lix ego designs, space!lix will be next! i look forward to actually giving him a name since i don't think he has one ;)(unless ive missed it which could be possible...)

Do you have any tips how to color and shadow hair? I really like how you color stuff but im new to digital art and all my drawins look like kids drew them because idk how to color :(

If you’re just starting off with digital, I recommend fuckin around until you feel more comfy. It’s a new medium, all the new stuff should be experimental and if you think it looks bad, that’s because you’re learning something new! Give yourself some time to find your footing.

A general tip for starting digital is find your brushes. Some people have a whole arsenal of brushes, but you’ll always gravitate towards a few. Experiment and see what suits you. I only really use 1 brush, up to 4 depending on the project.

For coloring hair, you need a good base. Know and understand the shape of your hair in 3d so you know where to put the lighting and shadows. Understand where the hair attaches to the head. Looking at the large hair shapes on 3d characters can help you get a better visual of it. Start with BIG shapes and chop it down into smaller ones. By using the shapes, you can put shadows and lighting around them. Add stray hairs here and there to make the hair look more fun

Tbh,, Eyes? I usually and actually draw my eyes like little lines and such. Its an huge comfort thing for me, and one of the things I never really wanna change! But that doesn't mean to not try and step out of your comfort zone though, I try to do that a lot when im feeling confident enough!

CLOTHES!! I rarely see people draw canon characters or ocs in general all dripped out in clothes!! Maybe once in an while,, probably not really an style thing but just wanted to say it :3

Also hooves,, but again not really an style thing I think. Mainly since its genetic wise between me and my besties aus and ocs!

But to behonest I don't really think I have much of an style difference other than trying to be more diverse? With bodies and such! Never be afraid to go wild tbh! (Just some examples ↓↓)

Arm hair, scars, hooves, tails, noses, horns, etc etc!! Do what feels best to you and what feels more like you.

Who/what is your biggest inspo for poetry or art?

aagh i dont think i'll ever have one biggest inspo for poetry n art i just have a lot of lads which i like specific things about + those likes are still always ongoing and changing lol (which btw ty for askin bout poetry cause i LOVE it n i never get asked abt poetry hehe)

I have a big ol google doc where i have lines of fav poetry i write down when i come across them (usually when im just scrollin the internets) and atm I've been noticing that a lot of lines i keep enjoying are all by Mary Oliver even tho i've yet to read her collection of poetry!!! so that's on my to-do list C: other poets who's names keep poppin up in that google doc are ocean vuong, richard siken, chen chen and uhh flatsound? they do more music but they've done some spoken word stuff and their songs just feel close enough to the realm of poetry to me u know

Art stuff... lol which medium?? /lh I really like thomas jordan's photography (the COLOURS my DUDE) mmm shelia berger's kinetic sculptures and KICKASS "Bird Show" encaustic paintings (i watched the rlly short like 5 min documentary on her and i was enraptured) Spencer finch has got a lot of cool conceptual art stuff like i think CIE 529 418 (CANDLELIGHT) is rlly cool!! Holly warb and @/vchienart both got some lovely lovely illustrations/paintings with soft beautiful colours... @/emilienunez has some really pretty and elegant yet v cute ceramics!! and @/soonthemoon some really like cute warm n cozy ones... HMMMMM i think.. even tho i always complain abt the belts n stuff i like drawin hank n sanford the most.. i think part of it is cuz i like drawin their goggles/glasses cuz its the closest i can get 2 eyes and in most non-grunt art my fave part is doin silly expression stuff w eyes and. most grunts do not have those lol

also for hank i like the 'angles' on my usual design 4 them i like drawin a lot of lines liek that 4 some reason angular stuff is fun 2 me n sanford hes probably the quickest main madcom guy i can draw so i like rapidfire doodling him but my more human style 4 him i liek drawin his hair and sometimes the kitty ears tho thats been an on n off thing lately

uhhh art tips ummmmmmm i feel like im just winging it 90% of the time BUT UH I DRAW A LOT OF SILLY THINGS THAT COME IN2 MY HEAD JUST 4 FUN.. like thats usually what ppl do but i mean like almost Every idea even if its a lil out of the comfort zone?? n u dont have to post every single thing just draw it to draw it.. and that does help sometimes.... like ive learned how 2 actually draw a lot of stuff solely powered by my desire to make a funny but also references help a lot too but thats a very basic art tip everyone gives (obviously it is very helpful 👍👍) OH ALSO THIS IS MORE RECENTLY but u might have noticed ive changed my canvas to be grey instead of white n its not exactly related to the art itself but it has been much nicer to my eyeballs sooo i would recommend doing that.. changing it to a color thats better on the eyes if ur drawin a lot
