Astro Boy is so important to me. Beyond the fact that my exposure to the media was through a DVD that my uncle had burned the first two seasons of the show onto (how he even found/heard of it in the first place I have absolutely no idea), Astro Boy is a story about empathy’s impact on design. How the process of othering weakens the foundation necessary for progress. And ultimately, the importance of being kind to all.

I have absolutely no idea where my career is going to take me. But if I can embrace these lessons and maybe try to make the world better by following their lead, I think I will be very happy. 🚀

I wanted to share this video because not only does it show how AI is influencing scams more and more as time goes on, it shows how scammers use fomo, the fear of missing out, to make people react before having time to properly think.

Which, in and of itself, is a common tactic used not only by businesses, but by people looking for help as well.

If you've ever went to an online store, be it name brand or even a shady one, and seen big flashy text saying: "Only 3 left in stock, buy now!" or "This sale runs out in <insert countdown timer here>!!", and you instantly clicked that buy button, you've been a victim to their fomo/impulse buy strategy first hand.

This chapter with Hiroshi's flashback too on his meeting with Umetaro in his childhood plus in the university OH MY GODDDD AUGGHHH OWWWWWWW IT HURTS SO BAD Umetaro is so deeply attached to Hiroshi, the only person to be able to make him open up despite his loneliness from his genius + losing his family.. ough their relationship is so so sweet, they have such great mutual admiration for each other.

Their ideals are so intertwined too. i love how much sway Hiroshi has on Umetaro's cold logic. Hiroshi grounds him whenever he's about to go into a mad scientist rhetoric. Despite their contrasting values at certain point, Umetaro in fact finds ingenuity in how humane Hiroshi's thought process is instead of ridiculing his softness.

MIND YOU, they're in like a robotics science university too where Hiroshi definitely has gotten ridiculed for the idea of ascribing humanity into tools (robots). But who's the one that values Hiroshi the most? The mad genius prodigy with the vision for the future. Ough... my brain

The ultimate form of love from Umetaro is is telling a human being that he's irreplaceable regardless of how much robotics has advanced. Not even AI or the latest powerful technology can replicate the bond he feels to the real Hiroshi. Despite how much he vouches for technological advancement and "God" robots that will surpass humans, he can't let go of Hiroshi.

You said before in a previous ask that robo doesn't consider other robots has people the way that he considers himself a person, with the exception of Alan since Alans Ai is similar enough to his, but I noticed he tries talking to totally-not-Mark-Zuckerberg's AI Anna.

Is this him trying to figure out if she's has sentient has he is (atleast sentient enough that that should be embarrassed about changing infront of her) or just him trying to get information about the other people there

First of all, no such thing as thinking about Atomic Robo too much. Everyone should be thinking about him, or the series, or its world, at least a little bit every day.

But I feel like he was trying to suss out where Anna fit in the hierarchy of automatic intelligence vs. artificial intelligence.

I'm at a convention this weekend and a reader asked me what I thought about AI developments in recent years. Part of my answer was that I was worried AI would turn out bad, not in a Sci-Fi Movie Doom of Humanity sort of way, but in a very dull Capitalists Are Fucking Morons sort of way, and here we are. But that's why, as early as possible in the series, we establish that Robo is an "automatic intelligence." The official reason is that they would have ended up coining a different term for the technology because it came up in the '20s in Robo's world versus the '50s like in our own.

But the unofficial reason is that I wanted to differentiate Robo and his ilk from whatever horrors would befall us in what I presumed at the time to be closer to the middle of the 21st century. I failed to consider these tech morons were so dead inside that they would mistake a fucking spellcheck algorithm for the true face of god, so I failed to anticipate that they would push this garbage on us so much more desperately/quickly.

Anyway, back to your question more or less, Anna isn't an automatic intelligence like Robo or Alan. She's just a run of the mill artificial intelligence that runs Zebos' orbital platform carrier, under lots of remote human supervision because she isn't really advanced enough to really do this wholly on her own, and as Zebos ruefully admits, they require a full crew on the ship when they're doing launches because she isn't allowed to run those at all. Because, at the end of the day, Anna is just a large language model. She can more or less make conversation, but as Robo found out, even that's a bit circular.
