John Bartholomew was born in Edinburgh on December 25th, 1831 in Edinburgh.
If, like my family, you enjoyed playing Scrabble, I think the majority of us had at hand a Bartholomew's dictionary at hand for checking spellings and some of us had one of their atlas's where we could look up exotic places far from Scottish shores that we could only dream of, the world since then has gotten a hell of a lot smaller thanks to the World Wide Web and the Internet.
He was still very young when he acquired the skills of map drawing and engraving directly from his father, John Senior.
He was then sent to London for more formal training as a geographical draughtsman and engraver. He spent two years with the noted German geographer Augustus Petermann. His love for maps and geographical work soon led him to make rapid progress as a cartographer.
Returning to Edinburgh, he continued his father’s business with great energy, and, in conjunction with Dr Petermann, he contributed most of the maps to Fullarton’s Royal Illustrated Atlas, and to the Philip’s Imperial Atlas, drawn and engraved in Edinburgh. Other important works followed including Black’s General Atlas of the World; a large topographical map of Scotland on a scale of four miles to an inch; and afterwards a companion map of England and Wales from the survey just then completed.
In 1859, John married Annie, the daughter of John McGregor, a smith of Greenock. Following his first wife’s death in 1874 he married Anne Cumming, the daughter of Primrose Nimmo, a master brass founder of Edinburgh, and his wife, Anne Philip, who was related to George Philip, the founder of the Liverpool map makers.
From his two marriages, John had two sons, and seven daughters
John was sought after as an engraver in Scotland for work outside his cartographic focus as well, including as illustrated here botanical drawings.
He is said to have had a reserved nature, which made him unwilling to enter fully into public life, but he took great interest in the reformation of the Scottish rights of way and Recreational Society and was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1857.
John travelled widely to obtain new work and introduced a programme of improvements, including the installation of lithographic printing, which brought considerable savings to the business from increased productivity.
His works attracted much public commendation, and received distinguished awards at different international exhibitions. About 1870, as the business gradually extended, several important atlases were undertaken for American and foreign publishers, the Handy General Atlas of the World being published simultaneously in England and America.
John Bartholomew Jr was also commissioned to engrave the map of Treasure Island for Robert L. Stevenson as seen in the pics
In 1888, he retired from active work, leaving the management of his business to his son, John George.
On a trip to London seeking special treatment, he died in March 1893 and was buried in Edinburgh.

✨💍😍
for both!! ...sorry if i already sent you one??? I was trying to in the petco but the signal there is SHIT
DO NOT WORRY I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE ASKS WAH
THIS IS GONNA BE LONG SO UNDER THE READMORE
✨: Are they a magic user? If so, how did they come to learn it (born with it, studied, acquired, etc.)? What does their magic look like when cast? If not, what is their attitude towards magic?
CAM:
CAM's magic comes from the Frain family, and as a result his magic stems in golem-making and maintenance. He is also able to craft smaller, basic robots who exhibit similar properties to golems just with different materials. He primarily focuses on metal materials, as he is a robot and has trouble making golems out of organic material. Further, he has a little bit of proficiency with 'hacking' based magic, which while it can be used to momentarily pause an enemy mage's magic crest, as he was created as a helper to the Master of Chaldea originally, it now manifests as a 'buff' to an ally's magic. CAM was created by combining a robot with the remnants of Roche's magic crests found after his death in Apocrypha. As a result, he is powered by someone he never knew. Further, the Frain family created him as a way to survive after the war, funded by Chaldea, and so he did not get very loving attention from them. As such he's conflicted on his magic. However, with people like Paracelsus and Avicebron, he's growing to appreciate his magic and what he can do.
Armand:
Armand primarily uses mineralogy magic. Unlike other mineralogy based mages like Tohsaka Rin and the Edelfelts, Armand's magic manifests less in jewels and more with actual minerals and alloys. The Rose family, having been shunned to the rockier parts of Scotland, was forced to work with what they had. Combined with some very basic rune magic, Armand's magic focuses not on the flashy, bright jewels, but on the sturdy, strong rock. The rocks he carries around are close to rune stones for quick bullets if needed, but with enough preparation (rune carving) he can move the earth. He refrains from using curses and other spells associated with big mage families due to his family's history. Further, the rope he carries is braided with volcanic rock. When activated, it can burn its victim. Growing up, he was not the one originally meant to have the magic crest. To him it feels uncomfortable and foreign, which may be why he refuses to use common spells and instead focuses on what he knows - the earth.
💍: Among their current companions, are there any that are narrative foils to your OC? How so?
CAM:
For CAM's companions, the closest one is definitely Nezha. As both robots awkwardly shoved into their bodies with a mix of memories, the two work together to save the world. However, Nezha is marked with anger, and CAM struggles with being unable to feel that frustration as it was not programmed. They find solace with one another and Nezha tries to help him work with his feelings so he does not follow a similar path.
Armand:
While Armand's narrative is similar to some of the servants who were originally masters, the closest in terms of foils is with rather with fellow co-master, Poole. Both were both rather not considered by their respected families, and then the title of master was awkwardly thrust upon them. As well, they both have literary servants (Dumas and Jekyll), related to their love for stories. However, while Armand harbors hatred for the original heir, Poole cannot - and this is a point of contention for the two.
😍: What traits, physical and/or mental, do they find attractive in other people?
CAM:
One of the big things CAM finds attractive is,, for lack of a better word, is a complicated dynamic with what is 'being a human'. He gravitates towards other robots and 'living weapons' within Chaldea. Further, those who have been told they are not human but continue to love humanity/the world he finds extremely attractive. He is curious about the world, and those with knowledge or love to share make his CPU overwork.
Armand:
Armand would rather die than admit what he finds attractive, but for the most part - he likes those who are charming and know it, may or may not be the most annoying person on the planet and know it. He loves story-tellers. He also just likes people taller than him (that is not hard).

Selkies are mythological creatures that can shapeshift between seal and human forms by removing or putting on their seal skin. They feature prominently in the oral traditions and mythology of various cultures, especially those of Celtic and Norse origin. The term “selkie” derives from the Scots word for “seal”, and is also spelled as silkies, sylkies, or selchies. Selkies are sometimes referred to as selkie folk (Scots: selkie fowk), meaning 'seal folk'. Selkies are mainly associated with the Northern Isles of Scotland, where they are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land.
Selkies have a dual nature: they can be friendly and helpful to humans, but they can also be dangerous and vengeful. Selkies are often depicted as attractive and seductive in human form, and many stories involve selkies having romantic or sexual relationships with humans, sometimes resulting in children. Selkies can also be coerced or tricked into marrying humans, usually by someone who steals and hides their seal skin, preventing them from returning to the sea. Such marriages are often unhappy, as the selkie always longs for the sea and may eventually escape if they find their skin.
Selkies have counterparts in other cultures, such as the Faroese, Icelandic, Irish, and Manx. They are sometimes confused with other seal-like creatures, such as the mermaids or the finfolk. Selkies have inspired many works of art, literature, music, and film.

–––– is that TAYLOR ZAKHAR PEREZ? no, its actually FRANK LONGBOTTOM! according to HIS file, they are an TWENTY-FOUR year old FORMER RAVENCLAW. they reside FULL TIME in scotland because they are working AGAINST lord voldemort and they believe in the LIGHT. that explains why they are so AMBITIOUS and PERCEPTIVE. but i’ve found that they can also be DETACHED and PRIDEFUL, so i guess people can’t be all good! they always reminded me of READING GLASSES THAT HAD A CERTAIN CHARM, EXPECTATIONS THAT WERE TOO MUCH OF A BURDEN FOR ONE MAN TO CARRY, KINDNESS THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED. i heard from albus dumbledore that they are currently working as AN AUROR/ DEFENCE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS TEACHER. i don’t know about you, but i’m excited to see what their story holds!
FULL NAME:
Franklin Ramon Longbottom
PRONOUNS:
he/him/his
DATE OF BIRTH:
September 20th
Frank’s a virgo -- Virgo’s are infamous for being loyal, hardworking, analytical, practical and kind and these are all positive traits that Frank encompassed. They are also known to be over critical of themselves and others as well as being ‘all work and no play’. The balance was essentially Frank struggled with, though he has his life in order -- from the outside looking in, he was the golden boy -- but that balance, that need for him to be okay and have everything be exceptional all the time - something his parents had a hand in. Virgo’s are attentive and they are known to have a deep sense of humanity and I think that’s something that Frank values -- he’s never one to sit back and stay hushed at the sight of injustice.
FAMILY HISTORY:
Augusta Catalina Longbottom and Mateo Daniel Longbottom were not the worst parents - truly, he knew that as far as pureblooded families went, he hadn't really gotten hit with tragic start. As the only son - and truly, he wondered if that was a blessing or a curse - he had felt the pressure at a young age. He had shown sides of his magic fairly early on, and merlin knew how hard he had to work at his grades to avoid a gloomy holiday/summer break.
Constantly riddled with needing to achieve more, because however will he measure up to the great Mateo Longbottom, exceptional Auror - currently seated with the Wizengamot, it was a legacy that Frank never asked for but it became his burden as soon as he could understand what it all meant. He loved his parents - he really did but in moments of clarity as he grew up, he could see how unhealthy their relationship with each other let alone theres as a family could be.
CURRENT EVENTS:
he had been told that it was only a matter of time - he took urgency for granted - he lived for danger, he was confident in who he was and perhaps that worked when it was only himself he had to worry about -- one injured partner later, an injury that was caused by his own carelessness and Frank found himself willingly on desk duty. it wasn't that they didn't try to get him back out there - but he was lost -- and he'd rather not let his fear cause more harm than good.
it's not that he was in denial about the current state of his career - what good was an auror that couldn't go out in the field. so he didn't hesitate when a teaching spot opened up at Hogwarts - of course he told Headmaster Dumbledore it was interim. just something new he had wanted to try out, as if a break was enough to sate the fear - you can find Frank teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts at the moment
SEXUALITY
For Frank, intimacy and attraction were one of the same. He could appreciate beauty, but for him to be attracted or drawn to someone -- it was more about the individual than their appearance. Frank is pansexual -- it’s more about him loving their personality and mind.
WAND
Frank’s wand is 7 ¾ in length, it’s a wand that is sturdy an in his earlier years it was hard to wield it until he actually put his mind and effort into mastering the spells correctly and wielding the wand the way that it should be wielded. When Frank had arrived to Ollivander’s shop ready to meet the wand that would be his companion throughout his life, he never thought that he would end up with a wand that was composed of Alder. The young boy eager to be ready had read up on what he was looking for, he often thought that he’d end up with a wand made up of Birch but he was bounded to the wand whose wood was seen as inauspicious.
But the wood itself was not enough to drive him away, the core was the curious bit to him, for something so unstable it needed a counteragent to provide balance and that element was doxy wings. Doxy wings was an unstable core usually but matched with Alder, it would prove to be a stable wand but wands of this nature was usually wielded by those who practice the dark arts. The core of his wand was doxy wings and though his father had been initially worried considering that those creatures were unmanageable and mean spirited he truly believed that it was what the wizard does with the wand is what counted. Frank had never been so happy and at comfort with any other wand, his actions were the ones that defined him, not the core of his wand and he knew that he would do great things with this wand and prove that a Gryffindor could wield it just as well as a Slytherin without giving into the temptation of darkness.
FOUR CHARACTERISTICS:
[+ve]
Loyal – For as long as Frank could remember – his mother had always told him about the importance of family, and how we always had to be loyal to those we love. It was one of the greatest acts of love and support. His father however always taught him that loyalty was a two-way street – If he were to expect it from another, he should be sure that he could provide the same level of unwavering loyalty. It was not something given out of convenience and though it was a symbol of love, it was also a symbol of respect. If you had the luxury of calling Frank a friend – he’d go to the ends of the world for you. He loved his friends and family with all he had, it was in his nature to provide in halves -- he was either there or he wasn’t.
Adaptive – Ever since he was a young boy -- he craved change, he understood the importance of stability and security, but the need for new perspective -- new talents, new skills and his dream job -- it all required flexibility. He thrived in his environment regardless of what challenge was thrown his way. Frank learned at a young age that he had to change to succeed. When Frank decided he wanted a career in Magical Law Enforcement -- following in his father’s path, he knew that his life was not going to be static. To succeed in that world, he needed to constantly move – reinvent himself, he needed to be the best version of himself and be able to be flexible. He dabbled in many things -- explored his interests, tested out what worked for him.
[-ve]
Calculative – Nearly every move Frank made in his life had a purpose. He didn’t just act on his whims and though he had one thing that was his heart’s desire and could possibly lead to his happiness; it wasn’t something that he made a habit of. He had come this far because of well thought out moves and he’d continue to succeed because he played the game to win.
Intolerant – It wasn’t that Frank wasn’t patient, he truly was -- he was just not completely capable of stomaching idiocy and ignorance. He was intolerant of nonsense – they weren’t toddlers, as a prefect he had a responsibility to maintain the rules and ensure the safety of his peers, yet somehow quite often he felt like a glorified babysitter. Frank wasn’t one to bite his tongue and made a point out of being vocal on the matter.
WANTED CONNECTIONS:
EX-PARTNER - this could be his last partner on the job, the one he watched get injured because of his own carelessness, or it could be someone he's worked with in the past. someone who would know him fairly well - this would be his work family.
BETROTHED - the Longbottoms are many things - traditional is certainly one of them. His parents would have given him till his twenty third to find someone of his choosing and Frank had done nothing but dive headfirst into his work at any chance -- so they set him up, Frank might currently be reluctant but up until having to step away from his Auror duties, he never had the time - now things are looking a bit different -- (totally open to a different kind of plot here)
DISLIKE - he might not have enemies just yet, but someone he thoroughly dislikes and perhaps this could be because of school or work -- but something (we can plot out) led to them hitting a sore spot
FRIENDSHIPS - we love a good platonic relationships, as much as he loves his parents, he doesn't always get alone with them let alone see much of himself in them -- his friends would be his family of choice
HEADCANON 001 - AMORENTIA
He might not openly admit it but Frank is quite fond of lavender, it’s a smell that reminds him of his mother. Augusta Longbottom was not the most affectionate of women, she was quite bold and blunt but when it came to her son, she never failed to give him the best hugs. It was something that he adored as a child, lavender was the scent that he always associated with his mother.
He was also quite fond of the smell the sea exhibits, it was a tangy fresh scent that he’d encounter whenever he took his morning walks during the summer. They resided near a shoreline and it was a smell that always had a way of waking him up.
He also enjoyed the earthly scent he inhaled whenever he took a walk on the outskirts of the forbidden forest
HEADCANON 002- VICES/QUIRKS
Vices: Frank isn’t one to enjoy the stench that came with smoking, he found it to be a terrible habit but he does in fact enjoy a drink every now and then.
Fears: Frank wasn’t too fond of spiders. He couldn’t stand the sight of them, if he was a foot within one, you will see him screaming and running in the opposite direction. He also has an irrational fear that the great squid will entrap him and suffocate him to death, he wasn’t too fond of taking a dip in the Black Lake.
Habits/quirks: Frank lived to pace. Whenever something was troubling him, you’d find him wearing out the floor with his pacing. Aside from pacing, messing about with his hair would probably be the only thing that would sooth him. Even if his hair looked perfectly fine, you’d often fine Frank running a hand through.

Here’s Scotland with Stonecleaver throughout the years. The Sword is his Mark that helps him greatly in fighting magical creatures or break curses. To summon the Sword, Scotland stomps his foot once and hold out a hand so his Mark shimmer into existence in his grasp.
It can act as a normal sword, but if it uses magic, the runes on the blade will flare and the sapphire gem will hum with each strike. As explained in this post, one of the abilities of the sword is to shrink/grow so it’s easier for the wielder to carry it.
How Scotland got his Mark: (warning: slash to the leg)
Scotland found his Mark as a young child (around 10 years old) when exploring a cave after hearing rumours of a hag hoarding stolen goods from several villages. Curious and a bit over-confident, he tried to sneak into the cave to banish the hag, but was caught in the middle of writing the sigils needed for the spell. The hag attacked him and in a wild panic, Scotland grabbed the first thing he saw from the pile of stolen goods: a short sword. However, the sword seemed to have a mind of its own because it tried to fight both the hag and Scotland, resulting in the boy getting a nasty gash on his leg. Incapacitated, Scotland scrambled back deeper into the dark cave with the sword still in hand.
But instead of being plunged into darkness, the sapphire gem on the handle of the sword and the runes on the blade started to glow, giving him enough light to navigate through the tunnel. However, it also attracted the hag’s attention, giving his position away. With nothing else to do, Scotland did the best thing he could think: he chucked the sword at her. By sheer dumb luck, it struck her arm, pinning her against the wall.
That was when he realized the sword did more than just randomly attack anyone and glow in the dark. No matter how hard she tried, the sword wouldn’t budge. It was like it was frozen in time and space. Scotland took that discovery as the chance to banish her for good. After the whole ordeal, he grabbed the sword and pulled. Surprisingly, he didn’t meet any resistance and it didn’t try to fight him off again. In fact, when he held it, it felt right, like it was meant to be in his hand.
The next day, he was shocked to find the Sword gone and for a time, he thought it was all a dream. It took a lot of trials and errors (mostly looking silly waving his hands around and calling out for the sword), but in the end, he managed to find a way to summon it.
Since then, he trained for decades to get use to it and learn all its power. He’s usually the first one to jump into the fray when his family is in danger, especially if it’s a magical threat. He may be a paramedic in his spare time, but in the world of magic, he won’t hesitate to be on the offensive, knowing he has his brothers’ back to patch him up later.

𝕴𝖘𝖑𝖆 𝕯𝖆𝖜𝖓 aka 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐭 : 1/2 of the NXT women's tag champs. twenty nine years old. from glasgow, scotland. debuted in 2013. dependent roleplay portrayal, in affiliation with dynamitehq.
In the ring, Isla is a wicked witch who will most certainly hex you, break you down, and destroy you. Outside of the ring, Courtney is a different story. In a lot of ways the character that she plays is influenced by not only her years worth of research into religion, spirituality, and the occult - but also her authentic self. No, she is not an evil enchantress planning to cast a spell on you - but she is a practicing pagan and often does refer to herself as a white witch. Personality wise, Courtney is a sweet woman who believes that if you put good out until the world, it will eventually come back to you. She's a bit of an oddball when it comes to her interests, leaning more towards the strange and unusual things in life. Despite that, she's a kind and nurturing soul who looks out for everyone as much as possible. If you are her friend, there is nothing she won't do for you.
Courtney is single and identifies as demisexual and biromantic. This means that she will need to develop a close bond with you before she becomes interested sexually. This doesn't mean that she won't get crushes or find people attractive, it just means that she won't jump into bed with anyone until she's grown to trust them and connect deeply with them.
Hello, it's Adri here with a second account that I'm actually going to stick with this time. I've honestly had quite the interest in Isla since the early days of NXT UK, and she's simply continued to grow on me. If there is any discomfort at all regarding her religion (i have researched and practiced paganism myself), please let me know and I will not mention it. As always, my dms are 100% open for plotting and I would love to develop connections. I'm really interested in plots like roommates, exes, best friends, one sided crushes, and obviously relationship stuff. Just let me know what you're thinking! I ship based on chemistry so I probably won't settle on a ship until I've seen our characters interact - but yeah! I'm open for anything.
this account is a sideblog to @strongzeroed

Thorns and Ink Roleswap AU
I had to step back from this one cause I had a whole huge essay written and then my computer restarted and deleted it. It very much upset me so I need to take a break.
I had said last time that a Roleswap AU could mean a lot of different things since Roses and Blank Pages could also be argued to be a roleswap AU where the guys come to our world instead of the girls to twst. Or even the girls have magic and come to a world without magic. But for this one, I decided the guys crash land in Twst instead with no magic at an all-girls academy called Night Raven College where the girls are all studying magic. Here is what the girls would be like if that was the case.
Valentina is a first-year Heartslabyul student who just began at NRC. Originally fromThe  Marigold Plains (a fan country I made based on Coco/Mexico), she is the only member of her family to have magic and so she often struggles with feeling pressure to be successful to help support her family whom she loves dearly. She does her best to keep her nose clean but is quick to blame the guys for when something breaks or goes wrong to avoid punishment. Secretly wishes she was sorted into Pomefiore so that she could have an easier time breaking into the field of magical pharmaceuticals and eventually cosmetology. Her unique magic is called Flower Talk which allows flowers she chooses to verbally communicate for five minutes at a time. However, she hates using this magic as over the years she has found that Flowers can be rather rude.
Kristina is a third-year Savanaclaw student and current dorm leader. She’s known for her brash words and bitchy attitude around campus, though most still respect her because she can put her money where her mouth is. She’s from the Misty Highlands (a fan country I made based on Brave/Scotland) and is the captain of the school’s Magical Shift team. Though she has been struggling with not only her team starting to favor the second-year Diasomnia brat on the team but also pressure from home about her grades and taking her life more seriously. All despite the fact she wants to play Magical Shift at the world level. Her unique magic is called For My Own Hand which allows her to make a specific target, after which any spell she casts will land on that specific target no matter the cover or distance.
Anne Marie is a second-year Octavinelle student and current vice dorm leader. She was selected for the role shortly into her first year after the previous vice leader dropped, unable to handle the attitude of their current dorm leader. Anne is from the Rose Queendom though she did spend some time in her childhood in the southern isles of the Wynterlands (though her memories about her time there are hazy at best). She’s kind, confident, and eager to help out but that doesn’t stop the bitterness she feels every time she’s overlooked in favor of someone more conventionally attractive, especially when she hears from her mother that she needs to grow up and be more responsible with her appearance all the time. Her unique magic is called Thimble Kiss which is strong healing magic, which makes her popular in a school that regularly experiences fist fights and magic brawls.
Judith is a second-year Scarabia student and rumored favorite to be dorm leader next year. This has led to a lot of friction between herself and the other students who believed she paid for her place at the school despite her stellar grades since she rarely to ever uses magic. She’s cold and doesn’t talk much and always wearing gloves even refusing to touch anyone. Though this has more to do with fear of her unique magic getting out of control and accidentally giving someone frostbite due to her magic getting out of control when she was younger forcing her to wipe the memories of her childhood friend. She’s even accidentally hurt her own brother, not that he would ever let her forget that fact.  She also has the added strain from her grandmother wanting her to use her magic as an in with the Wynterlands royal family since they value strength and prowess in the country. Her unique magic is called Frozen Heart and similarly to Leona’s magic, allows her to freeze and turn anything into ice.
Kimberlee is a bright-eyed first year in Pomefiore. She’s optimistic and does her best to be nice but she’s also nervous about her being behind on trends since she’s from the remote country side in the Shaftlands. She does also get rather bitter and annoyed that her fellow Pomefiore members always want to cast her in masculine roles since she’s tall and it “suits” her. Still, she’s determined to make a name for herself in the world of fashion–even if she is rather outspoken about her distaste for one of the top models in the field right now. It also doesn’t help she bares a striking resemblance to the model as well. Her unique magic is called What Once was Mine and it allows her to reverse time on a person or object allowing her to heal or fix it. However, if it has been longer then an hour she is unable to do anything to help at all.
Eva is a third year and current dormleader of Ignihyde. She has a sharp tongue and a precise attitude. She is aloof and avoids most people with snarky one-liners. Her mother is one of the teachers at the academy and she’s originally from the Kingdom of Heroes. Out of everyone the guys have met so far though, she seems the most openly antagonistic to them for some reason they can’t fathom. Not that anyone else cares to say anything against her since she’s brilliant. Her unique magic is called X Marks the Spot, and it allows her to find an object anywhere if she has physically touched it at least once.
Fiona is a second year of Diasomnia. Despite her friendly demeanor and overall cheerful attitude being uncharacteristic for the school, she is rather beloved. And yet, she still often finds herself left out or forgotten by the rest of the student body and uninvited. Mostly at this point due to her consistently turning down invitations to places and activities in favor of studying and helping with her nephew’s tutoring over the weekend. She’s on the Magical Shift team, but despite this face, she isn’t very fond of the sport and even less so of how her captain seems to have it out for her. Her unique magic is called Stroke of Midnight and allows her to enchant the appearance of any one item but it only lasts until midnight of that day it was cast.

On July 5th 1745 Charles Edwards Stuart set sail from France for Scotland with two ships, the start of the '45 Uprising.
Now as usual there are differing dates for this, the events of the journey can also change, depending on the source, part of the confusion with the dates can be attributed to the change in calendars in 1752.
The 1745 Uprising did not start well. Charles had only been able to put together a small expedition with only two ships, one a light frigate, the Du Teillay, the other a much larger French naval vessel of 64 guns, the Elisabeth, chartered from the government. These two ships set sail from the Loire and enroute they encountered the British 54 gun HMS Lion which damaged Charles' larger ship so badly it had to return to France. Since it was carrying most of the arms and ammunition for the Prince's force this was a severe blow. Nevertheless he continued on to Scotland, landing on the island of Eriskay on 23 July 1745 at what is still known as Cladach a'Phrionnsa (the Prince's beach).
Charles' first meeting, with Alexander Macdonald of Boisdale, in South Uist was a shock. He told the Prince that he could expect no support for his rebellion and advised him to go home. Charles supposedly replied "I have come home, sir." It was almost the shortest of visits since his entourage were soon quarrelling. They had heard of the arrest by the government of the chief of the Macleans of Mull as a Jacobite plotter. Only Antoine Walsh and of course Charles argued that the rebellion should continue.
Growing paranoia led to the Du Teillay sailing for the safety of the sea lochs of the mainland. Charles set foot on the mainland at Loch nan Uamh on 25th July. Meetings with other important clansmen were as discouraging as that with Alexander Macdonald had been. They were Jacobite supporters but also realists. They knew the likelihood of success was negligible and that failure would spell disaster for their clans.
Charles refused to listen to any advice and gradually assembled a few local supporters. He secured the support of Cameron of Lochiel, who's support and the men he could put in the field were vital if the rebellion was to proceed. Charles sent letters and messengers from his HQ at Borrodale summoning support and he decided on Glenfinnan as the place where he would first assemble his army.
On Monday 19th August the Jacobite standard was raised there. Of the approximately 1200 men who gathered at Glenfinnan about 700 were Lochiel's Camerons.
Just over 14 months later Charles escaped Scotland forever on French frigate L’Heureux sailing from near Arisaig on 20th September 1746. It was the end of the Stuart attempt to reclaim the British throne.
The first pic shows action between HMS Lion and Elizabeth and the Du Teillay, 9th July 1745, the second is Chasing the Jacobite Dream, an Exhibition at The Hunterian Museum, testament that the Jacobites still attract a fair amount of interest.

Whiskey Market Growth Drivers and Challenges: A Detailed Study of Market Forces and Influences
Tumblr media
The whiskey market refers to the global industry involved in the production, distribution, and consumption of whiskey, a popular alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Whiskey, also spelled whisky, is produced in various countries around the world, each with its own distinct styles and production methods. Here is some comprehensive information about the whiskey market:
Types of Whiskey: There are several types of whiskey, including:
a. Scotch Whisky: Produced in Scotland, Scotch whisky is made primarily from malted barley. It is known for its smoky and rich flavor profiles.
b. Irish Whiskey: Produced in Ireland, Irish whiskey is typically made from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley. It is known for its smooth and light character.
c. Bourbon: Produced primarily in the United States, bourbon is made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. It has a sweet and full-bodied taste.
d. Rye Whiskey: Rye whiskey is primarily made from rye grain and is popular in both the United States and Canada. It has a spicier flavor profile compared to other whiskies.
e. Japanese Whisky: Modeled after Scotch whisky, Japanese whisky has gained international acclaim for its quality and craftsmanship.
Market Size and Growth: The global whiskey market has experienced significant growth in recent years. Factors such as increasing disposable income, changing consumer preferences, and the popularity of whiskey-based cocktails have contributed to the market's expansion. The market size is projected to reach billions of dollars by the end of the forecast period.
Key Players: The whiskey market is highly competitive and consists of numerous multinational and regional players. Some of the prominent companies operating in the market include Diageo Plc, Pernod Ricard SA, Brown-Forman Corporation, Beam Suntory Inc., and William Grant & Sons Ltd.
Market Trends:
a. Premiumization: Consumers are increasingly willing to spend more on high-quality and premium whiskies, driving the demand for luxury and limited-edition expressions.

a. North America (United States and Canada) b. Europe (Scotland, Ireland, and other countries) c. Asia Pacific (Japan and India) d. Latin America e. Rest of the World
Regulatory Environment: The whiskey market is subject to various regulations and standards concerning production, labeling, and distribution. Each country or region has its own set of laws governing whiskey production and ensuring product integrity.
The whiskey market offers several benefits, both to the industry itself and to consumers. Here are some key benefits of the whiskey market:
Economic Growth: The whiskey market contributes significantly to economic growth by generating employment opportunities and attracting investments. Whiskey production requires a skilled workforce, from distillers and blenders to sales and marketing professionals. Additionally, the industry creates a demand for raw materials, such as grains and oak barrels, providing a boost to agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
Export Opportunities: Whiskey is a globally recognized and appreciated alcoholic beverage. Many countries have established a reputation for producing high-quality whiskies, leading to export opportunities. Whiskey exports can contribute to a country's trade balance, increase foreign exchange earnings, and promote cultural exchange.
Tourism and Hospitality: The whiskey market plays a vital role in tourism and hospitality industries. Distilleries, especially those with visitor centers, attract tourists who are interested in learning about the whiskey-making process, tasting different varieties, and experiencing the whiskey culture firsthand. This boosts local economies by attracting tourists, creating jobs in the hospitality sector, and stimulating local businesses.
Product Diversity and Innovation: The whiskey market offers a wide range of products, catering to diverse consumer preferences. Distilleries experiment with different grains, aging techniques, cask finishes, and flavor profiles to create unique expressions. This variety provides consumers with a range of options to choose from, allowing them to explore different styles and flavors of whiskey.
Social and Cultural Significance: Whiskey has a long-standing tradition and cultural significance in many countries. It is often associated with celebrations, social gatherings, and special occasions. The whiskey market fosters social connections and cultural appreciation, bringing people together over shared experiences and enjoyment of the beverage.
Investment and Collectibles: Whiskey has emerged as an alternative investment option for collectors and investors. Limited-edition releases, rare expressions, and aged whiskies can appreciate in value over time. Whiskey enthusiasts often engage in collecting and trading rare bottles, creating a secondary market that adds value to the overall industry.
Responsible Consumption: While moderate and responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages is important, the whiskey market promotes awareness of responsible drinking practices. Distilleries and industry organizations often collaborate to educate consumers about alcohol consumption, encouraging responsible behavior and discouraging excessive drinking.

Buy sarong and wholesale shawls Under one roof for Netherlands
Sarongs pareos are a priority design staple while venturing out to heat and humidities. This bright, rectangular piece of colored texture can be worn in various ways, making it staggeringly flexible and a showy and complimenting choice for any look or event. sarongs pareos very well may be worn as a dress, a skirt, a bridle top, and then some. Ready to change itself into a frill or talking piece for any outfit, a sarong is an ideal expansion to a popular voyager's bag.
The following are only ten of the ways it's feasible to wear women’s sarongs and guidelines for how to tie them.
Step-by-step instructions to Wear women sarongs
Strapless Dress
This dress is one of the more normal approaches to wearing a womens sarong. Holding the texture length-wise, wrap the sarong from one side of your body to the next. Arrange the top corners firmly and tie or get them into the top edge of the dress
Triangle Skirt
A simple, coquettish skirt that shows off your legs. Crease inverse corners of the womens sarong together; don't stress over the edges matching up impeccably, this skirt is intended to be lopsided! Then, point down, fold the more extended edge of your triangle over your midriff and tie at the hip.
Off-the-Shoulder Dress
A cool and energetic choice for the ocean side or roof bar. Beginning with the long side of the texture held lined up with your arm length, place one top corner at the center of your back and fold the cotton sarongs over until your body is completely covered. Carry the leftover cotton sarongs texture to the front and pull the top corner over your far shoulder to attach with the corner in the focal point of your back. English creations craze exports to the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Italy, France, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, UAE, Morocco, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Egypt, Austria, England, Canada, Chile, Ireland, Iceland, Kuwait, Norway, Nigeria, Peru, Poland, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, and South Africa.
Bare-backed Strap Top
Flaunt some skin with this attractive shirt. To begin with, buy sarong in half length-wise. Holding the texture before you by the normal corners of the sarong, take both top corners and tie them together behind your neck. Take the sides of the crease and fold them over your midsection, tying them despite your good faith.
Surge Shorts
buy sarong that is comfortable and simple to wear. Take two corners of the sarong so the texture is held out before you with the more extended side lined up with your arm range. Then, at that point, wrap the top corners behind you to meet at the little of your back. Take the excess texture and pull it front to back between your legs, and fold or tie it into the midsection.
Smaller than expected Skirt
This charming and coy scaled-down skirt is wonderful as concealment over a bathing suit or matched with a tank top for a day on the promenade. Accumulate the edges of each short side together and enclose the texture by one hand completely around your body until you are covered on all sides. Then, integrate the two packs in a tangle or curve.
Nothing spells exquisite and agreeable simultaneously as a wonderful pashmina cloak hung over us, delighting in its weaved magnificence and rich surface. The satiny texture of Pashmina printed shawls
, which were worn by Mughal rulers and even Sovereign Victoria, makes them astoundingly warm in chilly climates.
A customary turning wheel is utilized to wind around the fleece after it has been hand turned. As well as being a tedious cycle, the low inventory of unrefined components makes it significantly more challenging to satisfy the colossal interest. There is likewise a major market for Pashmina's printed shawls
partners because of this muddled cycle. The fakes are modest and bad quality, but they seem to be genuine ones.
How To Distinguish Unique wholesale shawls?
They are handmade with rich weaving and are an essential piece of Indian customary wear, and throughout the colder time of year season, a considerable lot of us could consider giving one a gift to a friend or family member, or even to ourselves. Since Pashmina wholesale shawls are so costly, there are many fakes and impersonations available. It would be not difficult to become cheated and frustrated in the event that you didn't have the foggiest idea how to distinguish the certified ones.
Prior to spending your well deserved cash on buying a phony pashmina shawl scarf, it is better that you comprehend how to distinguish a genuine one. Thus, to take care of you, here are the main 7 fundamental tips to consider while purchasing Pashmina shawl scarf:
Nonetheless, assuming it smells like consumed leaves or white vinegar and you see large blazes, and abandon a little knock, you should rest assured that it is either thick or polyester.

The book is stored behind glass but visitors can turn virtual pages of the book to take a closer look at some of the illuminated pages using touch screen displays adjacent to the case. The Gospels are currently on display in the cathedral’s Revealing York Minster in the Undercroft attraction. It’s believed its original pages were written in Canterbury in around 990AD, with additional pages added to the manuscript by the Dean and Chapter after they arrived in York. It contains four Gospels rather than the whole bible and is filled with elaborate illustrations as well as a letter from King Canute dated around 1019. The Anglo-Saxon book is one of the most valuable in York Minster’s collection and is one of the few surviving items from the Saxon Minster, the location for which is unknown today. The York Gospels were brought to York in around 1020 by Archbishop Wulfstan and the 1,000 year old text is still used in services today. The Minster’s website says of the Gospels: In the undercroft of York minster, the York Gospels are on display. But every once in awhile, we do get to have an encounter with a manuscript that has names in it, and last weekend on a trip to York, our editor-in-chief had a manuscript encounter which involved both early Bibles and names. The vast majority of the time, the DMNES editors do data collection for the Dictionary via printed editions we simply do not have the time, volunteer power, or money to work solely with manuscripts. For other Biblical names, we are slowly working through the alphabet adding for (cf., e.g., Aaron, which has forms from the Wycliffite Bible, the Geneva Bible of 1560, and in the next edition will have citations from the Sagrados Escrituras of 1569). Because there are so many Biblical names and so many vernacular translations produced before 1600, added the citations to the relevant entries is an on-going process we can generally add the Middle English forms from the Wycliffite translation of 1395 right at the start because there is a handy online searchable version of it available. One of the long-term adjunct projects of the Dictionary is to look at how various names are spelled in the earliest vernacular translations of the Bible, because these translations had a significant influence on how the names were spelled when they were used in common currency. (Many of the early examples are the names of priests.) We have examples of it from the Czech Republic, England (from the 12th C on it predates the later fads for Biblical names), Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Low Countries, Scotland, Sweden, Ukraine, and Wales - a pretty widespread distribution geographically, and also temporally as our examples range from the 8th to the 16th C. Adam was never an exceptionally popular name in medieval Europe but it was also never an entirely unpopular name.
#Tadam name orgin series
While we do not want to argue in this series of posts that medieval metaphysical and physical theories had any influence on what peopled named their children - that is almost certainly not the case - the one name that we can showcase for this element is actually one with a connection to the element itself: Adam derives from a Hebrew word for red clay or soil, which is purportedly what God made the first man from. The element for this post is ‘earth’: Earth, dust, dirt, ground, mud, clay, soil, etc. But we recently thought of a neat theme - the four elements! Earth, air, fire, water, the foundations of medieval metaphysical and physical theories…In what ways do they turn up in personal names? It’s been awhile since we’ve done a set of themed posts on this blog! They’re a lot of fun to write, but sometimes less fun to think up themes for (hint, hint, if you have any suggestions, leave them in a comment and we’ll see what we can do!).

#Oxford wordpower how to
Similarly, many verbs give rise to a noun that ends in either -ment or -tion: entertain, govern, and measure lead to entertainment, government, and measurement, while collect, educate, and invent lead to collection, education, and invention. For example, adding the ending -y creates chilly from chill, cloudy from cloud, and dirty from dirt. If you learn a noun, you can often form a related adjective by adding a short suffix. If the idea of getting something extra for their money is attractive to shoppers, then learners of English should be encouraged by the idea that learning one word will often bring another word – and often more than one word – into their vocabulary, virtually free of charge. The fact that the word is pronounced the same as bog off, which is a mildly offensive way of telling somebody to go away, makes it sound slightly rude, and this has no doubt added to its popularity. This is an abbreviation based on the initial letters of the phrase ‘ buy one, get one free’ as this suggests, it refers to a special offer in a shop that allows you to receive an extra item free of charge when you make a purchase. One of the more striking new words to enter the English language in recent times is BOGOF. There is something very attractive about the idea of getting two things for the price of one.
#Oxford wordpower how to
In this post, he looks at how to learn two words for the price of one. He has edited a number of dictionaries and has written books about spelling, writing, and punctuation. Ian Brookes is a freelance writer and editor based in Scotland.

You know a piece of dialogue is good when it even pulls at even the author's heart strings. It was some random dialogue for a scene I thought of while showering. May need to tweak it later but just UGH! 😭
Pulling him aside, Eva frowns. "Listen Leiv..." She begins but he holds up a hand.
"I know."
Her eyes search his as her brows furrow. "You know?"
He nods. "I know you're coming to break things off between us."
Eva averts her gaze as she feels the tears threatening to form.
"I'm so sorry...it was never my intention to lead you on."
"I know."
"How did you know?" She risks meeting his gaze. Her heart aches as he gives her a sad smile.
"I knew it the moment Robin arrived just by the way you looked at him. Even in your anger, even if you tried to deny it to yourself, there was love there." He says, glancing at Robin in the distance as he spoke to Much. "Even during our brief time together, you never once.looked at me the way you looked at him. It was the same same way you used to look at William."
Tears prickled behind her eyes and he smiles. "I knew I could never compete with that."
Ignore any spelling/grammar mistakes. It's part of a draft.
For context:
Eva - Assassin whose husband was killed in front of her. Her husband promised to tell her all about his secret past in his homeland (Scotland) but was killed before he got the chance. She's on a mission to uncover her husband's past while building an army to get revenge on her former assassin leader who hired the bandits that killed her husband.
William - Eva's late husband and former assassin. He was a Scottish nobleman/knight who was wrongfully accused and run out of Scotland years before he became an assassin. He wanted to leave the assassins to start a new.life with his wife,Eva, and asked for permission from the leader. In reply, the leader hired the bandits to ambush the assassins on their way home from a mission and William is killed.
Leiv - A northman pirate (Viking) who is an old friend of William and his family. During a raiding party when he was a teenager, alongside his brothers Rollo and Ragnar, he gets lost and captured. William and his siblings convince their father to not kill him and they become close over the years until William is able to help Leiv get back home to Kattegat in Norway. Years later while trying to sneak on a ship after a successful mission, William and Eva are attracted and Leiv and William are reunited. Over the years a strong friendship grew between the 3 of them and Leiv secretly developed a crush on Eva.
Robin - Robin Hood. After a failed attempt to avenger her husband's death, Eva returns to the Sanctuary to lick her wounds and mentor her newest protege, Isaac. During a return mission, they get recognized from their wanted poster and brought before King John where he offers her a deal - her freedom and resources to avenge her husband in exchange for killing Robin Hood
