Maybe you should aim better, next time. Thoirt grumbles, snapping his jaws in irritation.

I roll my eyes, Thank you for your concern. I would think of something more biting to retort to my red daggertail, but I’m currently staring at the bone of my ankle sticking out of my skin and having been separated from the rest of itself. I’m sitting in the grass where I landed poorly from trying to roll off my dragon. For your information, I wasn’t the one who told me to jump way too high in the air.

Thoirt snorts, I only told you to jump because I had assumed you knew not to land in a way that would snap your ankle.

“Sloane!” One of the others calls, and I can’t bring myself to look, as I feel the embarrassment color my face. Cursed dragon making me look like more of a loser than I already am.

I did nothing of the sort.

I sigh as Imogen reaches me, crouching down beside me as she examines my ankle. “Oh Mairi, this is not good.”

“Yeah, thanks for that,” I retort flatly, “I can’t get up.” The shame is still burning on my face.

“I’ll take you to the infirmary,” she says and I’d like to crawl in a hole and die.

“Let me do it,” Aaric approaches last, and punctuates his sentence with a yawn, “You’re helping train, and I’m not doing anything important.”

I think I’d rather walk than have Aaric carry me to the healers, but the first years are gathering and the looks of fear and pity are too much to take. “Fine,” I say shortly, “Aaric can take me. I don’t want to interrupt what you’re doing.” I tell Imogen who’s trying to make sure I won’t shatter to pieces at any given moment.

All the older ones do. Mairi’s little idiot sister. Always has to be kept safe. When I see Violet making her way this way, I grab Alaric’s pant leg and jerk on it, shame and guilt beginning to choke me, “Come on, Aaric. Let’s go.”

Do not be discouraged. Just because this small creature must carry you.

Please stop talking, I beg Thoirt. I know he’s doing it on purpose. I feel him chuckle.

Aaric scoops me up and begins to carry me inside. I see Violet pause, like she’s not going to come the rest of the way to me. I breathe a sigh of relief.

The Black Dragon Rider worries about you.

I’m aware, yes.

Then why do you run from her?

I’m pretty sure you know that, Thoirt.

She does, too, brat.

Do other dragons have nice names for their riders? Or are they all like you?

I am the only one like me.

I laugh and try to ignore that Aaric is carrying me like a princess across a threshold.

“Are you feeling okay?” Aaric asks, and it breaks me from my happy lull of arguing with Thoirt.

“You can see the bone sticking out of my leg, so what do you think, Greycastle?”

He sighs, “Of course. Forgot I’m not allowed to talk to you.”

“Um, you made that choice. You’re the one who did this to u-“ I cut myself off. I don’t want to finish it, but Aaric’s eyebrow raises all the same.

“Us? I did this to us?” He laughs incredulously, “Sloane, you’re the one who told me it was nothing. You’re the one who said there wasn’t an us. That there would never be an us.”

We reach the healers wing, “Whatever,” I heavily disagree, but I can’t say that with all of these strangers around, “You can be the martyr all you want.”

I know deep down he’s got a small point, but he’s got the timeline out of order. That happened first. Then I- I swallow and move on from the thought. Then he made himself present to comfort me for weeks. And then we- I blush. But the next day, he didn’t even talk to me. I thought there would something. Anything. But no, it was more of the same nothing. For weeks. Months. Like it didn’t happen. Like it didn’t matter.

The healer smiles warmly, and she practically bounces as she says, “Hello, how can I help-“ and then she sees my ankle and the cheery look falls, “That’s gonna need a mender.”

Empyrean modern AU headcanons (part 2)

This one’s been in my drafts for a hot minute 😅

Violet is allergic to mushrooms. Unfortunately, she did not know this, so Xaden had to take her to A&E halfway through one of their dates.

Sawyer once downloaded Tinder and was bullied relentlessly for it by Ridoc. He got him back for it later though by catfishing him on Instagram.

When Aaric/Cam was eight, his brothers had him convinced he was adopted for a good six months.

Ridoc thinks potpourri is edible.

Whenever Violet and Liam get in a car together, they blast Christmas music no matter what time of year it is.

Jesinia loves adding notes to the beginning of her AO3 fics saying things like “Sorry I haven’t updated for a while, there was an uprising at my school so now I live in my friend’s boyfriend’s mansion with three hundred fugitives.”

Xaden had an Imagine Dragons phase when he was 12. His favourite song was Thunder.

Whenever Imogen buys tampons, she deliberately chooses the youngest male cashier just to watch him get uncomfortable.

You all know I'm a huge Halden-Tauri-is-Violet's-Ex theory fan, and I just found an amazing reddit post explaining exactly why I think so.

To summarize:

Violet seems to be very familiar with dating nobility and being associated with them

It's mentioned Violet had exes in infantry, and where does royalty enroll? Infantry.

Assuming the two did have a past relationship, it never could've been serious as Halden was royalty and Violet wasn't, which could've added on to Violet's insecurities about Cat and Xaden, because they were both technically nobility, and she wasn't and considered herself inferior.

So what will happen in the book?

Halden comes looking for Cam/Aaric. Either he covered for him, or is trying to find out where the hell he went.

There, he meets guess who? Violet! His ex! Where she's now a badass dragonrider with two badass dragons, lots of daggers, and lightning.

And so he's like wow! because she isn't a soft book loving scribe anymore. So now he thinks she's "worthy" to be in a relationship with him, and that the kingdom would be much more likely to accept her. Possible betrothal?

Which I personally don't find really reasonable, because at that point Violet's already a known traitor to the country, sooo...

So then Violet's like, no, obviously, cause she already has Xaden, and he only wants her now that she's strong, etc.

Violet is understandably tired of Xaden lying and hiding shit from her, so she's really trying to Figure Shit Out with him. She's determined to make it work out.

Xaden will clearly be struggling with being a venin, and be very frustrated when he messes up.

This leads to him even (begrudgingly) encouraging Violet towards Halden, thinking he's the safer, "better" option.

Reminder that Xaden only broke off his betrothal with Catriona because she was a toxic asshole, not because he was against a political maritial alliance.

Prepare for very, very, VERY jealous Xaden. Overprotective, lose-his-shit, "he's better and you should pick him but I'm not letting you go" kinda Xaden. Which we will all love, obviously.

At one point Xaden will try to play the heroic noble sacrifice and leave, but Violet will chase after/find him and they have a long angsty talk.

Remember that scene when Violet's trying to make Xaden jealous and she's talking about him and one of her exes fighting on the mat, and Xaden's like, _not likely, they're all in infantry and I'm stronger"??

THAT SCENE PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH. Like, Violet was trying to get Xaden to understand her situation and feelings with Cat, and then he's just being so smug and self-assured and completely disregarding her feelings?

I'm just saying, I love Xaden but he REALLY needs humbling. And I would cheer the entire time. Loudly.

I think we all can agree that Violet and Aaric/Cam have some sort of history together but what if they used to date.

We know that Violet was in two relationships before Xaden. It also became clear in Iron Flame that the two of them know each other on a more personal level. He was familiar with Violet habit saying things to herself when she is stressed and even though it was often in combination with Sloane, ​​she said several times that she cared about him.

Making this one for the blue's was actually difficult, i had so much intel on sgaeyl and Xaden that i didn't know how to lay it out on the spread but i got there eventually.

Do however note in case it's not obvious, I've only put the "important" known dragons on here. There are a handful of blues stationed near the borders as in they're currently active. But they do seem rare 👀

🏷: no book spoilers. gender neutral, no pronouns used. mentions of periods, cramps,, etc. soft and fluffy. these are kinda short bc it was hard to not make them repetitive — I think they all give excellent care + cuddles 🥰

Aaric is a quiet support kind of guy to me. he’ll be by your side, but not overbearing or too touchy. really good at playing with your hair and massaging the back of your neck if you get migraines (like I do) he also sleeps flat on his back and perfectly still like a total weirdo, so he’s great to use as a body pillow.

Brennan is the number one man for the job, and I’m not just saying this because he’s my favorite. he’s a mender, so he can literally stop your pain, and he can get stains out of clothes super easily. also just a very nurturing and gentle person, takes excellent care of you all week.

Bodhi is going to use this as an excuse to cuddle you and take naps all week (I love how the Bodhi girls have collectively decided that he’s just a lil cuddlebug 🥺). expect lots of murmured words of affirmation about how strong you are and how much he loves you.

Dain, the overgrown boyscout he is (I say this affectionately) is prepared. he knows when that time is coming up, and he is properly equipped to take care of you. has everything you need in both his room and yours. also gives a 10/10 back massage (canon, actually.)

Garrick insists that you spend the week in his room, because his bed is more comfortable (it honestly is) and that way he can take care of you. he’s very nice to cuddle up with. lets you sleep in his clothes, too, for maximum comfort. has a secret stash of all your favorite snacks, too — he’s been getting them from the fliers. don’t tell Xaden. (Xaden totally knows, and is also getting snacks from them.)

Liam makes sure you’re eating even if you have no appetite, and that you’re staying hydrated, etc. you might grumble about it, but absolutely nobody can say no to that face. he knows not to take it personally if you get mad at him, because you’re hormonal + in pain. gives fabulous cuddles, too, and lots of sweet words.

Ridoc knows not to make any jokes at your expense or fuck with you when you’re feeling fragile, instead showering you with cheesy verbal affection to get the grumpiness out of your system and get you feeling a little better — as much as you can, when you feel like your insides are being ripped out. uses his hands like ice packs for you, holding them on any place that’s particularly achy.

Sawyer was a little awkward about it at first, but now he’s a seasoned boyfriend who knows what you need and does it without you needing to ask; snacks, cuddles, back rubs, so on and so forth. helps you with whatever’s particularly difficult this week. ties your shoes for you so you don’t have to bend down and strain your back, etc.

Xaden can sense that you’re in pain, and the minute he’s able to, he’s scooping you up and whisking you away to rest in his arms. abuses his wingleader privledges a little bit, letting you have the worst day(s) off. don’t bother trying to lie to him and say that you’re fine — he knows you aren’t. don’t question the sudden change in his normal tough-guy persona either; just enjoy it.

++ none of these men are at all scared or grossed out by a little blood. they’re men, not boys, and they’re used to it anyway, going to this deathtrap of a school.

(Onyx Storm Theory! Long post ahead!)

I think that a huge plot point in Onyx Storm is going to be some kind of a 'Storm the Castle' arc, where Violet & crew decide that it should be out with the old King, and in with the new one (Cam/Aaric). There are two main reasons I think that this is going to happen, and each one is kind of it's own theory, so I'll talk about each one as it's own theory before bringing it back at the end.

The first reason is because I think the family betrayal is in reference to Aaric, Heldan and the King.

Through Violet's POV, we became comfortable and accustomed to the world of Naverre, and the culture of Basgiath in Fourth Wing, only for the rug to be pulled out from under our feet at the end, along with her.

Similarly, Iron Flame, through Violet's POV, shows us Basgiath through a new lense. The small clues in Fourth Wing that cast the slightest bit of doubt, but were usually justified with a 'it's above your paygrade' that we just accepted, because what else could we do? Suddenly it all seemed much more suspicious. In Iron Flame, we're also introduced to the world outside of Naverre, and what they think of it. We even get a hint of noble society outside of Naverre, learning about the politics of other nations.

We see Naverre trying to negotiate that those who left Basgaith in IF should return, since they need the numbers, intelligence and power of The Rebellion in order to give themselves a fighting chance. Between that and the hatching grounds, there's a high chance that our main team will be returning there.

By this point, I think it's safe to assume that King Tauri, or at least Halden, is aware that Aaric is missing, and where he went, mostly because he ended up leaving with Violet, and if not, he'll find out if either of them show up on Unification day. RY also mentioned some family betrayal, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's one of the Sorrengail siblings are the traitor. Maybe she was referring to the royal family?

Aaric's choice to side with the rebellion in IF is a betrayal to his family, so maybe Halden will take that same path? It's also possible that the King tries to set up/punish Aaric in some way for that choice, especially if he's mad over it. And if not mad, then had his ego bruised, in some way, by it. Even Aaric choosing to try and take his father's throne would be considered a family betrayal, no?

Then there are the nobles. We saw how divided the flyers and riders were when forced to work together in Iron Flame. If the fliers have to come to Basgiath, or if active soldiers are forced to try and work with them, then there are going to be hostilities and scuffles. But who else would possibly become upset over their presence? The King and nobility, of course.

The end of IF forced Naverre to acknowledge the threat of the Venin, as well as the truth that the rest of the world was ready to turn their backs on them, had it not been for Violet. Also, the rebellion's alliance with the fliers, and Poromiel as a whole will fundamentally change if they chose to go back to Naverre.

A group of fliers went with Violet to protect the hatching grounds, yes, but at the time, they were technically under the command of The Assembly, that already refused Violet and Xaden's request to aid Navernne. They left on their own choice, because they were part of Iron Squad, and wanted to help. None of that was, in any way, sanctioned by Poromiel, or it's queen. It definitely doesn't imply that other nations forgive, or are willing to foster friendly relations with Naverre after they stood by and let them take the brunt of the Venin's attacks for years without offering aid.

Naverre needs the soldiers that were part of the rebellion back, because other nations would have better relations with them, The Assembly, and specifically with Xaden, who's father led the last rebellion. Other countries would trust and respect them in a way that they don't to Naverre, and that would upset the King, immensely.

In Fourth wing, we see the King during reunification day, and he's described as pinning his sash with 'a dozen medals he’s never won from a hundred battlefields he’s never stepped foot on.' Violet also describes him as having an air of superiority, despite never having earned it. We learn from Aaric in IF that he would like to show off things like old journals, so he kept them in reach. With all of that in mind, King Tauri doesn't seem like someone who'd appreciate being overlooked by foreign nations for people like Xaden, or Brannon, who lead a Rebellion and fostered alliances with them.

The first book had characters showing disdain and prejudice for the marked ones within the first couple of chapters, that never goes away. Nobles are likely to be much worse, especially when Xaden, the marked ones, violet, and those who left to fight in the rebellion, and return with gryphon fliers as allies, are given more respect than they are. Enough so that they put the blame for the Venin's attack, and the wards failing, even temporarily, on Violet (who revealed the secret to everyone) and Xaden, who helped lead the Rebellion.

Aaric would have it especially bad, since he lied to his father, joined the riders quadrant, and then chose to side with the rebellion, all of which would be considered a betrayal by his family in and of itself.

The second reason is regarding Violet's father, and his research. We is that Violet has a one track mind, in OS, and I think that her main goal will be to find a cure for Xaden. Where will she find that cure? I think it's in her father's research, or at the very least, the research is part it.

We know that the King has access to journals and texts with knowledge and history of the first six, their war, and the Venin. We know that Andarna is part of a seventh den that disappeared after the last war with the Venin, so she's the first of her kind in around 650 years. This means that whatever Violet's dad knew about feather tails, he didn't learn from Andarna. However, from the way his research is talked about, and suspiciously missing, it's safe to assume that whatever he learent goes beyond feathertails just being juvenile dragons who have yet to mature.

There's also the question of where he learnt any of what may be in his research. He was a scribe, not a rider. The only dragons he'd really get close enough to potentially interact with would be Aimsir, his wife's dragon, and Marbh, his son's dragon. Would either of them speak to him, or spill dragon secrets to him? No. Probably not.

Given that Tairn (and probably Sgaeyl too) were unaware of the fact that she wasn't a black dragon, the only one who seemed to already know were Codagh (and maybe even the other den elders). However, there's a chance that they don't know that she can somewhat remember he 'past life' I guess? Idk what to call that. That time before she hatched 560 years ago? That she was left behind for some reason, possibly related to lighting the wardstone? Either way, it means that there was likely very little that Aimsir or Marbh could've told Papa Sorrengail that we don't already know by now.

So then, what does he know? And how did he find out? I think Papa Sorrengail found some journals that belonged to the original six? Or their companions? Specifically, I think that there was a seventh, original rider that bonded with an iridescent dragon, like Andarna. The reason that the existence of a seventh den is so shocking is because the other dragons from her den either died (like her parents), or left somewhere, leaving just one egg behind. Andarna's. Another possibility was that the iridescent dragons disguised themselves as dragons from another den, to hide their existence.

In my last theory, I considered the possibility that the Venin knew Andarna was part of the seventh den, and that the weapon that destroyed them 600 years ago was another of her den, and perhaps their rider. This is part of the reason they sent Jack to Basgaith, and why he was so hell bent on killing Andarna for some weird reason. Because he knew what she was.

In this case, is it possible that Andarna, as well as those of her kind 650 years ago, were also aware that they are the best weapons against the Venin? Did the disguise themselves for that reason? And it was only their rider(s) that had any clue that they were part of a seventh den?

Whatever the case, I think Papa Sorrengail came across a journal or an account written by someone who was bonded to an iridescent dragon, as a result of his research on Feathertails. He also learned that there was one egg left of that den, and just like how Violet and Xaden knew what would happen if humans learned that Andarna's Feathertail powers could stop time, Papa S knew what the military would do if they learnt of the egg. So he hid his research.

Another possibility is that someone stole/hid the research on behalf of her father. Varrish seemed very interested in it in IF, so it leads me to wonder why. Did someone learn about what kind of documents or accounts he found? Did he hide it from someone else who wanted the research? Or did someone else steal the research for themselves?

To round it all off, there will be tension and political upheaval within Narrvere as a result of IF, with Violet, Xaden and Aaric in the center of it all. The king's ego just wouldn't be able to take it, meaning he'd be likely to retaliate in some way.

At the same time, Violet will be searching for a cure for Xaden, which I think will lead her to searching for her father's studies on feathertails, and possibly learning more about Andarna's Den in the process, as well as being given clues on how the Venin were defeated 600 years ago.

I believe that during this time, the king will become a thorn in their side, along with the nobles who support him. Much like Varrish, he'll actively give Violet and her friends ultimatums, impossible tasks, and just generally make it super obvious that the events of IF wounded his ego. Eventually, he'll become enough of a problem that the others decide that it's time to put Aaric on the throne, to unite Naverre and other nations in the known world, that have more respect for Aaric due to his role in the rebellion, against the Venin.

It would be really poetic for Aaric to become King, and earn some medals on the battlefield (unlike his father).

This was a much longer theory than I thought it would be. I originally just wanted it to be a paragraph or two, but ended up writing an essay, lol.
