an immortal supernatural entity trying to spread a deadly plague to bring about the apocalypse, and

a very large pig

I think part of what makes things so awful for Jon is being surrounded by people doing the things he could otherwise tell himself no one would have the strength to do in his position. like choosing to slowly wither and die rather than feed an Entity (Daisy), gouging one’s eyes out to escape the Magnus Institute (Melanie), remaining human while being the Archivist (Gertrude), being a hero despite everything (Adelard Dekker). these are all extremely difficult things but somehow every time he’s like “I’m not sure I have the strength to do this thing” someone else is always like “I do!!” like oh, good for you! some of us are regular-ass people who can’t do these insane feats!!!!

The “mundane modern solutions to arcane supernatural problems” trope gets me every time. Like nothing will ever top the episode of the Magnus Archives where Adelard Dekker looked at a horseman-of-the-apocalypse-style world-ending bringer of pestilence and went, “Well, you can’t end the world if you’re encased in cement.”

but they died before we even came to this place.

adelard dekkar is such an unknown. he never gives a statement directly about himself or his life - even when he's dying; it's about the case.

which, like. yeah. probably why he survived that long.

the only direct encounters he has with the fears as far as we know are when he seeks them out. but why? what happened to him that he knows about them, that made him choose to try and stop them. from what he says you can assume he sees it as a mission - from? for?? god. but there's no explanation, and not much real information on him as a person!! for almost everyone else we are given a reason. they're born into it, or there's an incident, or they going looking for it, or that it even just happens. gertrude, i think, is the only other person we never get the answer to that question from.

...all this to say; mr dekkar i love you please show up in tmagp so i can learn more about you and your fascinating little mind.
