so I went through the Side Order trailer a gazillion times, so it's disorganized thoughts/theories/opinions time!

we're just gonna put a cut here in case folks don't want to read a quite long post lol

okay, so I think the whole thing of this campaign is that it's not real. nothing that happens is actually happening to Eight, Pearl, and Dedf1sh. I mean obviously it's happening to them, but it has no affect on the real Inkopolis Square

so, I think it's either (1) a simulation/virtual "what-if?" scenario(probably created by Marina) that got corrupted or (2) that "world of order beyond comprehension" Marina mentioned that probably also got corrupted

either way it's gonna be weird, and is probably connected to computers somehow

my main reasoning for that is that every time we(as in the player) enter an area it literally loads us into the area(bringing in essentially an LoD model, then becoming the player/weapons), which most likely wouldn't happen if we weren't in some sort of virtual world

as well as this trippy glowy matrix-lookin' room thing

also the fact that Pearl is literally a drone clearly designed to look like her, and it doesn't appear as if we see her normally at all in the campaign. so my guess is that the drone is Pearl's "avatar" in this virtual world. this is further proven by her description on the Japanese website

this is a janky translation, but still, interesting wording

but why a drone? and why does it look like her? my only guess is that Marina made that avatar to look like Pearl, so she could be safe in this weird environment? I have no idea otherwise

why do Eight and Ded look normal then? why is Ded here in the first place? I have no idea, other than Ded saying they and Marina "go way back" and Eight maybe choosing to have an avatar that looks like themselves?

obviously a lot of that part of the theory relies on this world being something that Marina created and/or has/had some level of control over. I saw a theory somewhere(unfortunately I don't remember exactly) that was "maybe Marina's being controlled by whatever is all that black stuff and what's controlling the robot fish." which like, that'd be pretty dope ngl, and it'd tie into the "Marina made/discovered this place and it got out of her control" theory. and we've seen Marina precisely one (1) time, and it was in concept art that kinda made her look all glitchy and stuff

so like, I dunno guys, I think 'rina might be in danger...

sidenote: I don't really like the "Marina's the antagonist/villain" theory. it just doesn't feel in character for her to do something like that on her own will. I'm down for puppet Marina, but I just don't think she'd cause this herself

something that I've seen bounced around a lot is "you can play as either an Inkling or an Octoling!" using this as proof

my honest opinion? this is a reused text string for the Run Speed Up ability. I don't think we're playing as anyone other than Eight, who is canonically an Octoling

which sucks because I'd be down to play as Agent 4, but whatever, guess they don't get adventures anymore >:(

it does more strongly resemble the Latin alphabet than the other scripts in this series though, so it's definitely worth pointing out imo

gameplay opinions: looks fun!

folks are saying it looks like a rougelike, and even after looking it up multiple times I still have no idea what the fuck that means

skill tree thingy with the chips and stuff looks cool, hopefully it's implemented well, or at least not in a way that makes it more inconvenient to use it than go without

a bit of a bummer that it doesn't look like you can attack while flying around with Pearl though lmao. but I do like how she looks like she can use bombs(folks have pointed out a hyperbomb in one shot too :3c), and even (maybe, the shot's kinda weird) a singular killer wail speaker

also the design of the drone is fuckin' adorable

With E3 coming up and as we learn more about Splatoon 3 I’ve decided to share what’s left of Splatoon Neo in its current form. I’m expecting there to be many similar things overlapping with things I’ve thought of creating and what will be cannon in Splatoon. So I’m sharing this now so it makes sense if I release something that is similar to something that’s new already.

Spoilers ahead if you want to wait for the official release of Splatoon Neo things. (By name and minimal description)

Leftover Weapon Designs & New Stages:

*A few of these are just brainstormed ideas. Some may only show up when I share cancelled designs and ideas.

Abilities:

Exclusive: Pseudomorph, Bounty, Endangered, Adrenaline, Electroreception, Slip Stream, Good vibes, Stippler, Sea’s Curse, Reception switch, Scouter

Story:

“An interdimensional adventure in the Inkopolis Boulevard. Invasive artificial Octolings will try to make your visit to the Boulevard a living nightmare to scare you from staying. Free the city and play as “Agent ♾“ along side a retired hero and go on missions beyond your wildest dreams. The Inkopolis Boulevard is safe in your hands.”

- Discover the origin of the Inkopolis Boulevard

- Encounter the villain “Mariana”

- Make friends over a common goal

( The story may be impacted by the story of Splatoon 3 depending on what we learn in that game. Despite being in a different dimension there’s still cannon things that I’d like to coinside with)

World building:

- Meet Neon Lotus, the twin sister idol group of Inkopolis Boulevard.

- Stream music from the various Boulevard Bands. Neon Louts, Ultramarine, and more !

- Walk through Inkopolis Boulevard and visit each shop

- Learn about the popular clothing brands

I have plans to 3D model each stage and maybe even have a trailer movie for them in the future. Most of them will be released as drawings to share with everyone before they get a 3D version. I also have plans to make episodic animations for the Story in forms of a “gameplay” on my YouTube channel. This will probably happen after Splatoon 3 finishes getting updates. This gives me time to learn Unity more, but things may change with the release of the new Game builder garage. I doubt I’ll be able to replicate Splatoon mechanics in it but it’ll be cool to make low poly stages in for ppl to try out, then later share the better stuff in the future. I’ve managed to replicate Splatoon mechanics in a software called Dreams on Play Station which I might share soon since it’s a software I’m already skilled in using. Only downside is that it has limits that I want to go past but time will tell.

I’m very excited to continue to share my Splatoon ideas with you all and Splatoon Neo will be around for a while longer. Not included in the above weapon lists, but I have plans to make different skins for a lot of weapons including my own and cannon Splatoon ones. The first collection is planned to be the “Diet” collection where a few drink / food based weapons will come with a diet kit variant. Look forward to that after all current Splatoon Neo weapons release !

long post ahead- there's a readmore for a reason

deus and the h/v scene

in the world of bilbiopod, there's a force called deus that enables what might be perceived as magical powers. deus is a relatively recent discovery, so history up to about 1979 (ish. take any dates beyond 2000 with a can of salt) remains largely the same.

the powers deus can offer very considerably by individual, family history, environment, and culture. in extended exposure, it can also give physical effects, such as different eyes, ears, or senses.

deus, when in contact with wildlife, can enhance intelligence and promote more humanoid forms (though its debated if the humanoid adaptations are a byproduct of deus, or to compete with humans). this phenomenon is known as deus-prompted anthropomorphism.

after deus was studied enough to be used by the everyman, a vigilante crime-fighting (and crime-committing) scene emerged based on superhero media. this became known as the hero/villain scene, or h/v for short.

h/v can have a number of forms depending on the local area. for some towns, its dark and gritty- other cities, straight out of superfriends. the style of h/v in a certain area is a major point of its cultural identity.

h/v performers are usually not treated as serious criminal situations by police unless there is serious risk to life and limb involved. hostages are arranged and paid for; stolen goods are returned within 4-6 business days; buildings that were going to get demolished or renovated anyways are always the ones that get destroyed in a fight.

cities, towns, and where people live

ruckersville is a small suburb, almost exurb but too developed outside some city in tennessee. it's good for nothing except one little factoid: it has a weird h/v scene, and everybody knows it. home of the bible adventure team, the odd, christian take on a hero group has garnered minor national attention (and some major attention by a group of bankaran bandits...)

ruckersville's name is taken from the name of the town that the bibleman adventure took place in, i think it was mentioned in breaking the bonds of disobedience?

hikara is a city off the west end of colorado, known affectionately as hi-color, colorado by hikarans. it earned this nickname through the town's pride and joy, turf war- a sport based loosely off paintball where the objective is to cover the ground in as much paint as possible. as any resident of the glimmering city will tell you, it all started with a professor, his cat, and a coupla' paintballers...

hikara is the bibliopod au's equivalent to greater inkopolis, and its name comes from inkopolis's japanese name.

octo valley is the unofficial name for an unincorporated community outside hikara. it was nicknamed such after octavio (takowasa) and the rest of northwest hikara's heroes and villains were forced to flee when there was a fight for territorial rights. this event became known as the great turf war.

octo valley is just... octo valley. but with less floating things.

bankara is in east utah, a hop, skip and a jump across the rocky mountains from its sister city of hikara. it shares this tradition of turf war with hikara, though none of the glitz and glamor. this is the city of chaos, after all, only experiencing its economic boom recently thanks to a series of highly notable top-level turf war events.

bankara is this au's version of splatsville, also taken from splatsville's japanese name.

south of bankara, beneath the suspiciously sandy crater, is the former hero hideout of alterna. during a defense systems test, it collapsed, killing everyone inside. this event was deeply traumatic for the bankara and hikara communities, rendering their respective h/v scenes null and void.

important families

the peterson family- miles peterson and associated wife and children. miles isn't that important i'd just thought i'd mention him (the family dynamics are mainly just to make the inkling/octarian conflict work)

the cuttlefish family- craig cuttlefish, callie cuttlefish, marie cuttlefish, and technically captain 3, agent 3, agent 4 and agent 8. craig is the grandfather of callie and marie, the agents are ... adopted? question mark? i dont know whats happening with them tbh. craig used to be a hero of hikara under the name captain cuttlefish of the squidbeak splatoon- his feud with octavio led to the great turf war. his granddaughters, callie and marie went on to become pop idols, but still retained their gramp's teachings on how to be a hero. they are armed. callie and marie eventually started a talent agency, the squidbeak talent company, and associated record label, inkling rekords. they continue under the name of the new squidbeak splatoon, perusing important duties local heroes nor law enforcement will tackle (but only as a side hustle).

the takowasa family- octavio takowasa (dj ocatvio), marina iida takowasa (dj_hyperfresh), asher akkoro takowasa. octavio was an old villain and craig's arch-rival, though he began to regret the life he led and wanted to give a better living to his grandchildren through music. marina, the older sibling, ran away on her own due to lack of parental support (they wanted to keep villainy going, thinking it was the family legacy) asher, the younger sibling, left to go to college. this was a partial lie, she just applied and then left to start a band.

fyi- asher is an oc, and i don't think marina is related to octavio in canon (and asher isn't related to octavio outside of this au). the reason the octarians were adapted into a family is to make the inkling vs. octarian feud more understandable in a human au.

the houzuki family- nacre houzuki, baroque houzuki, pearl houzuki, "emperor" copal houzuki, "prinz" chiton houzuki. the houzuki family got their riches through owning a cruise line, houzuksea, and expanded into deep sea exploration after they got more successful. while plenty of the family have deus, only copal used his in any h/v scene before turning to turf war. nacre is the mother, baroque the father, and the siblings in order of oldest to youngest are pearl, copal, and chiton.

A weight was removed from Eight’s back— most likely her ink tank. There was a moment of temporary relief, before a stinging, burning sensation lit up her lower back. She’d almost forgotten about the ink burns; It had gone mostly numb about 20 stations prior (or maybe Eight had simply gotten so used to the pain that she stopped thinking about it) but now it had flared up again, bad enough that she was now finding it difficult to even breathe through the pain.

"Ohhh, that doesn't look good…" Pearl muttered.

(Language Barriers)

N-

“N-Nothing. Go back to sleep.” She responded quietly, trying to hide the shakiness in her voice. The quiet shuffling as the squid slipped out of bed told Eight that Runo was not, in fact, doing that.

“Eight. I can hear you crying. Tell me what's wrong.” They sat down on the edge of her bed, putting a hand on her back with the intent of being comforting, but she flinched sharply at the touch. Runo quickly withdrew their hand.

“Bad dream?” They asked. She nodded.

(Adjustments)

T-

“Tell them I’m glad, and that I’ve always thought they were super cool even as the enemy.” Eight said. Cuttlefish translated for Agent 3. Eight had to resist the urge to laugh when their face flushed a bright yellow. Clearly they never got many compliments, if such a simple one had them so flustered.

“‘You’re pretty fresh yourself’, they said.”

“I—?!” Eight could feel her own magenta ink flood her cheeks. Unlike the Octoling, Agent 3 did laugh. It didn’t come off as mean, however. Eight could tell that they were just messing with her. Eight really should get to learning the Inkling language soon, if she ever wanted to have a real conversation with 3.

She had been so desperate to escape from that place that she didn’t even think about the fact that she had nothing and nobody to depend on once she got to the city. It was times like this when she missed her friend Marina the most… If the older Octoling were here now, even if they were still stuck out in the rain, at least Coral would have someone to comfort her after every rumble of thunder, someone to snuggle up against for warmth. But she wasn’t here. Marina had left for the surface long before Coral had managed to escape Dr. Oarfish’s lab. The last year and a half without her had to have been the worst times Coral ever had to experience, which— given all she went through for the stupid Ink Virus project— was saying a lot. Well… Almost the worst. This may have topped even that. Not only did Coral still not have Marina to protect her, but at least in the lab she had been warm, dry, and had everything she needed. She was so tired, but with the rain pouring down at this rate, was it even safe to sleep? What if the flooding got worse? Even Coral knew what happened when an Octoling got submerged in water. She had not gone through the hell of escaping that place just so she could die in a rainstorm on the surface. But she was just… so… tired… Would it really be that bad to just rest her eyes for a little bit?

That said, pretty much all of Adam Young’s work, from Sky Sailing to Owl City and beyond, are always sure to put some sort of smile on my face. Either that or leave me crying. One of the two lmao

The power to travel between (and adapt to) realities. And not just like, oh, Berenstein Bears vs Berenstain Bears realities (though I would like to get back to my original universe sometime, thanks), I’m talking being able to travel at will to any universe you could imagine. Wanna spend some time in our world? Sure. An original world you came up with yourself? Rad, does it have dragons? Wanna visit Dreamland? Sounds good, you’re now the Kirby enemy of your choice. Hyrule? Shit, sure, what part of the timeline are you looking at, you wanna be a big talking bird? Pokémon? Here have a starter and go on an adventure. Inkopolis? Hell yeah dude here’s an Inkling body for you to hang out in, go splat some Salmonids. It’d just be so cool to visit these worlds and exist in a form that would make sense in them, as if you’d always belonged there? There’s so many worlds I’d like to visit that simply don’t exist in reality, and having the power to open a path to universes where they are real and where you can exist within them would just make my life? It’s like VR but better. It’s like being able to just pick yourself up and insert yourself into the world of your choosing. It’s like every self-insert fanfic you could ever imagine, and it’s self-indulgent and trashy and wonderful.

Just a little thing about how Runo's Limiter works. Figured it was about time to explain what my version of it looks like.

My idea of it is that it's a device embedded in the back of their neck. The device can be removed from the receptor but the receptor cannot be removed from their skin without causing massive damage unless done so surgically.

Runo's power was partially inspired by Deku from My Hero Academia; a "glass cannon" sort of character. Extremely powerful, but that power has major backlash and usually results in equally major physical damage (Runo definitely would have broken several bones by this point if they had any to begin with)

Runo's limiter is not only meant to eliminate the unfair advantage they have over others in Turf and Ranked battles, but also to keep their power in check on the real battlefield. Because while the ability to charge multiple special attacks consecutively could be useful in a life-or-death situation... It has also landed Runo in the hospital far too many times.

Fruit, Sprinkles or Syrup, huh? Well, I'll start us off. Fruit is the obvious choice. It's adding something healthy to a dish that is... not. Adding fruit to your ice cream adds a whole new flavor and texture depending on the fruit you pick. Berries are a personal favorite of mine, but I am a fan of banana splits too.

Coral:

Please. Ice Cream is supposed to be unhealthy. That's why people like it. You wanna top it with fruit, go get frozen yogurt. Best thing to top your sugar with is MORE SUGAR! Sprinkles all the way! Put a little bit of whipped cream on top and throw 'em on, and you've got a classic sundae. Plus, if you get the colorful ones, your ice cream will be aesthetically pleasing too!

Emily:

Until it melts because you were too busy looking at the pretty rainbow colors. Sprinkles don't add anything to ice cream. You'd have to put like a fistfull of them on just to taste any additional sweetness. Keep in mind, fruit has sugar too. That's why people with good taste put it on their dessert in the first place.

Coral:

Yeah, that's why strawberry ice cream already exists. Don't overdo it with the berries there, sister. Sometimes simple sprinkles are the way to go.

Elliot:

Emily:

Yes, let's let Elliot explain why he likes his syrup so much.

Elliot:

(Chocolate, Caramel, Butterscotch, Strawberry... So many flavors exist now. Bound to be one for every flavor of ice cream. Best of both worlds: sugary, but powerful flavor.)

Emily:

Yeah, except it makes everything gooey and gross.

Elliot:

No, I see where he's coming from. For some people, gooey is better than chunky. Plus with so many flavors, you can do so much with it. You can even mix flavors and it'll still probably be good. I saw him eating Cookie Dough the other day with chocolate AND butterscotch.

Emily:

I'll pass. Gooey texture makes me feel like I'm eating ink. At least fruit is solid.

Coral:

Well, I happen to like my fruit pre-mixed with the ice cream. It's too sour otherwise! Sprinkles are the only way to top your ice cream.

Introducing: the Mockfest

A Splatfest on Tumblr!

Okay so it's not actually that much of a Splatfest so much as it is for me to write silly banter between idols, draw stuff, and then let y'all vote on pointless questions. But I'm having fun with it, so now it's a thing here.

The Shell-Stoppers

An up-and-coming trio of octoling siblings who rose up from underground to the streets of Inkopolis Square, and later Splatsville. The band consists of main vocalist Emily ("Hachi"), sound mixer Coral ("DJ Bub-L-Gum"), and instrumentalist Elliot ("MintyFresh"), who— rumor has it— are somehow connected to another pop duo: Off the Hook. While the Shell-Stoppers themselves have never achieved true "idol" status, they have somewhat of a following and host a series of "online Splatfests", or Mockfests, in their spare time; nothing huge (they don't want to take the attention away from Deep Cut and the real splatfests, but playful little polls on generally unimportant topics— complete with funny discussions, as they each defend their choice before opening up the vote.

How this works:
