16. African Crowned Crane
The African Crowned Crane, Latin name Balearica regulorum, is native to Africa. They are 3 ½ feet tall and weigh over 7 pounds.
These birds eat grains, seeds, plants, worms, small fish, and eggs.
These majestic birds have black and white bodies with cream-colored tail feathers and a bristly cream-colored crest.

Welcome to "Cool Hair, Bro!" month, where we'll be featuring animals with awesome "hairstyles"... : )

The Grey Crowned Crane
Scientific Name: Balearica regulorum
A.K.A: The African Crowned Crane, The Golden Crested Crane, The Golden Crowned Crane
Region: Southern and Eastern Africa
Size: About 3.3' (~1m) tall
Interesting Notes:  The national bird of Uganda, this beautiful crane, despite being a relatively large bird, it and its sister species, the Black Crowned Crane are the only known cranes that have the foot shape necessary to grab onto branches and roost in trees.

Not to be a basic bitch but The lion king is probably my favorite Disney movie, and I tried to imitate TLK style while drawing some african animals not depicted there (In the original film: Some of these species might show up in the spinoffs, no idea)  I felt that I didn’t have to adjust my style that much, so either my regular style is fairly close to TLK or i’m just not very good at style imitation

#Birdtober2022 Day 29 - Crest / Plume
The African Crowned Crane is such a funky bird. 😍Those incredible head feathers are so striking. But they do always remind me of a fluffy white dandelion. 😂❤️

The Black Crowned Crane
Scientific Name: Balearica pavonina
Region: Select Savannah across Central Africa
Size:  About 3'7" to 4'3" (~1.1m-1.3m) tall, with a 5'11"-6'7" (~1.8m–2m) wingspan
Interesting Notes:  Both male and female in Black Crowned Crane pairs take turns incubating their clutch of 1-3 eggs for about a month.  When not incubating, the male will often watch for predators and the female will forage for food.  After hatching, the chicks will forage alongside their parents.
It is often viewed as a symbol of peace and is the national bird of Nigeria.  Its "sister" species, the Grey Crowned Crane, is the national bird of Uganda.
Sadly, due to loss of habitat (particularly of the wetland areas where they breed and roost) and illegal hunting and capture, its population is now considered vulnerable, but will hopefully grow again with conservation efforts.
