You're so right about scarification any ideas or tropes around that???
CW discussion of scarification methods and healing
Omg yes!
In general I think it is a great alternative to branding, I also absolutely love how it has the potential for intimate whumping during the care process that results in the clean lines of the scars
a whumpee that can't help but pick at the itchy scabs
Whumper having to tie Whumpee down to literally salt their wounds
Whumper putting their symbol, initials, etc on whumpee
Superhero-verse whump where a whumper with ice powers uses cold-branding on Whumpee
Since scarification can be done with cauterization, scalpel, branding tools, and even electrocution, you can also have a whumper that comes back to recut the same design into their whumpee again and again until it's permanent.
In the case of the Daybreak universe, James discovers a page in Aiden’s sketchbook, where he's turned the lines of injuries James has inflicted on his back into wings extending from his torso.
Later on, James uses a cauterizing tool to burn wings into Aiden's back and its this whole thing
James doesn't let Aiden have a shirt for the entire healing process and James handles all of the care himself, meaning lots of unwanted (on Aiden's part) touching as well as the application of irritants such as sesame oil
He already wasn't sure how long he had been sitting in the dark.
Aiden had been focusing on his breathing since he had finished taking stock of his injuries, matching the lengths of his inhales and exhales, pausing between each. He thought it was quite possibly making it harder to keep track of time, but he knew that in his current position, trying to do so would only end up causing more distress. He needed to stay calm above anything else.
When he heard the key turning in the lock, and he opened his eyes without thinking - an action that he immediately regretted as even the flickering, warm light past the door made him wince. But then, a searing white-blue light blinded him completely. He blinked furiously as his eyes watered, on the edge of actual pain. Aiden tried in vain to track movement or discern shapes and found himself entirely unable to do so.
"I hope you're proud of yourself, Aiden. You'll get to enjoy that damp cot when you sleep tonight."
The sudden voice almost made him start, but he managed to suppress the motion. The sudden tension in his body was likely still noticeable, however, and he silently cursed. He still couldn't see. He heard someone moving within the cell, the sound of something being set down against the concrete floors.
It was a... familiar voice, and he wondered who had decided to come interrogate him now.
He grit his teeth, keeping his fragmented gaze in the direction that caused the least discomfort. It took a force of will not to rub at his eyes, as he knew that would only make it worse.
"I am rather proud of myself, actually." He said in a cold voice, though the effect might have been ruined slightly by the way his eyes were watering.
"It's not every day that someone is sold out by their own agency and still manages to cause half a million minimum in damages before being detained." He could hear the other man moving again, and he struggled to piece together what he was doing to no avail.
In response, the man turned on the next lantern and walked it to the back right corner, setting it down there.
"Having trouble adjusting to the light, Aiden?"
Aiden lips curled into a snarl, turning his face away as pressure seemed to build within eyes.
"Yes, as that is what tends to happen when one spends any notable amount of time complete darkness." He said through grit teeth.
"Twenty minutes is a notable amount of time?"
Aiden's shoulders tensed further. Only twenty minutes. He wasn't necessarily surprised, but it certainly wasn't reassuring. It had felt at least three times that length, and he was deeply uneasy at the thought of being left completely blind for any time considerably longer.
"I don't know, perhaps you should try it out yourself and get back to me." He said scathingly, shoving the fear down. "I'll be happy to wait."
The man just laughed, and Aiden tried not to cringe as another lantern clicked on - so bright it hurt even with his eyes squeezed shut. His hands curled into fists as he heard the man walking near him, and his entire body remained taut as a wire as he tried to discern the stranger's intentions.
He attempted to open his eyes even slightly after a moment and came to the immediate and regretful conclusion that this was not currently a possibility as his eyes began visibly watering once more. He said nothing, unwilling to give what he knew would be a reaction instead of response.
"I will need you to get off the cot soon. Unless you want me to guide you to where I want you, I suggest you start working on adjusting your eyes to the light."
"Do I look... as though I am not trying?" Aiden turned his face in the direction of the voice, eyes still screwed shut but expression one of incredulous disdain. "Do you think that I am in any way pleased about my inability to someone who intends to hurt me?"
"Well, maybe you need to try harder then."
Aiden's eyes opened into the barest slits as he heard the man passing him again, anger burning in his chest at the mocking advice. He was almost as angry at himself for trying to follow it, but that was more of a necessity than a choice. He could barely see anything with the degree to which he was squinting, but he could make out the man's vague outline as well as three burning splotches of light.
"How much damage have you been authorized to inflict?" Aiden kept his voice flat, but the question had an undercurrent of a genuine - if morbid - sort of curiosity. He supposed he was going to find out one way or another, but he intrigued as to what sort of boundaries had been drawn and how this man would operate within them.
There was a brief silence, and then he heard the man snort. When he spoke again, the warm humor laced in his voice made the back of Aiden's neck prickle in warning.
"There are no limits to what I could do to you, Aiden."
The fourth lantern flared to life, and Aiden recoiled almost imperceptibly from the words as much so as the searing light.
"You have ten seconds to move yourself to the center of the room, and if you are not there by ten I will move you myself."
He was hit with a sudden sense of wrongness, with an awareness that something here was very, very off. There was power in that tone, an assuredness that shouldn't have been present - and as Aiden tried to process the source the instinctual fear in his chest, he knew that he had missed something important. He tried to put the pieces together, tried to grasp an answer that he knew was just out of reach, but it was so hard to focus on much of anything besides the ache behind his eyes.
Aiden felt a cold sort of fury blossom once more in his chest at the order, though - at the arrogance with which it was given. He knew that in his current state, it would quite probably be possible for the man to move him against his will if he didn't comply. He knew that it would be in his best interest to do so. However, that didn't change the way it made his blood pound in his ears and hatred twist in his gut like a living thing. He opened his eyes once more into slits and rose stiffly, body protesting in vain as he did so, and he walked to where he had been told with his head held high and his eyes open as wide as he could.
He stopped in the center of the room, fists curled loosely at his sides, and stared the other man down with eyes that still couldn't quite see.
"Good."
Aiden's mouth thinned into a line at that response, and he took a breath as if to say something - and then went very, very still as he heard more than saw the man circle around to his back. He heard too the clanking of metal, and had to push down the fear he knew he should be feeling once more. He felt the man begin to fasten a heavy metal cuff to his injured arm, and his lips curled into a snarl. He wasn't going to try and run at the moment, true. That would be foolhardy to the point of reaching something beyond stupid. He wasn't going to attempt to seriously injure or fight this man either, for the same reasons.
But he was angry, he was scared, he was in pain, and he was more than happy to try and spread those feelings around.
As the man reached for his other arm, Aiden reacted, a motion that started off fluid if only from the ease of practice, the right side of his body twisting forward and his left leg swinging back to slam down on the man's foot. Usually, it would have been easy to pull off - but usually didn't take any part of Aiden's current reality into account. He lost his balance, failing to find the necessary purchase on either flesh or floor, and even as he struggled to right himself, he just really couldn't find it in himself to be less furious than surprised. The man caught him by his shirt to haul him back up, and then shoved him down to his knees.
The sudden tension on his injured shoulder as he was hauled upwards forced an involuntary hiss of air through Aiden's clenched teeth, and he hit the ground hard when he went. He was still as the shackles were secured the rest of the way; the tenuous control he had kept thus far over his breathing was now entirely lost. By the time he was one his knees and fully bound, his eyesight had returned enough to make out two rolls fabric on the floor. He glanced upwards as the man circled back around, hoping to finally be able to place him, and then -
Aiden's eyes widened as the man came into sight, a reaction he regretted even as he made it but had no power to stop. Several emotions flashed over his face in random succession, and he was too unnerved to hide them. His breathing was still coming harder from his failed attempt to struggle, but now, panic also lent it an almost ragged edge.
Disbelief. Anger. Hatred.
Fear.
James Kane was standing in front of him, and he was holding a knife.

It is...really a miracle that I manage to find anything.
Anyway! Technically I only have two active WIPs (the ‘misc.’ section is mostly for any other random things I happened to find in my folder), but I’ll tag three people so I have one for each section. So @siarven, @concerningwolves, and @ryns-ramblings, I’ll tag you guys, if you’re interested in doing this! Also, if anyone else is interested, then feel free to do this and say that I tagged you!
This year I had trouble with what I wanted to do. After the Christmas piece, I thought I should do something big. A paint backhand more detailed style… but it didn’t feel right. So, we have this instead.
The other one was going to be at night but daybreak suits him better.
Wonderland | Jennifer Hillier | Published 2015 | *SPOILERS*
Fans of Chelsea Cain and Lisa Gardner will devour this edgy thriller about the gruesome secrets hidden beneath a small-town amusement park. From the author of Creep, Freak, and The Butcher, Jennifer Hillier's "fine knack for creating hideous killers" is vividly on display.
Welcome to Wonderland. By day, it's a magical place boasting a certain retro charm. Excited children, hands sticky with cotton candy, run frenetically from the Giant Octopus ride to the Spinning Sombrero, while the tinkling carnival music of the giant Wonder Wheel - the oldest Ferris wheel in the Pacific Northwest - fills the air. But before daybreak, an eerie feeling descends. Maybe it's the Clown Museum, home to creepy wax replicas of movie stars and a massive collection of antique porcelain dolls. Or maybe its the terrifying real House of Horrors. Or...maybe it's the dead, decaying body left in the midway for all the Wonder Workers to see.
Vanessa Castro's first day as deputy police chief of Seaside, Washington, is off to a bang. The unidentifiable homeless man rotting inside the tiny town's main tourist attraction is strange enough, but now a teenage employee - whose defiant picture at the top of the Wonder Wheel went viral that same morning - is missing. As the clues in those seemingly disparate crimes lead her down a mysterious path of missing perons that goes back decades, she suspects the seedy rumors surrounding the amusement park's dark history might just be true. she moved to Seaside to escape her own scandalous past, but has she brought her family to the center of an insidious killer's twisted game? Acclaimed author Jennifer Hillier's bone-chilling thriller is masterful and fast-faced, hurtling toward a shcoking, bloody conclusion.
Vanessa Castro has uprooted her life after the untimely death of her husband, a former Army service member dealing with PTSD. After his death, she took a job as the deputy chief of police at Seaside PD. In Seaside, the one thing that kept the town going is the Pacific Northwest's largest amusement park, Wonderland. Owned by a man named Nick Bishop, and ran by his niece, Bianca, it brings joy and wonder to those of all ages.
In her attempt to put the past behind her, Vanessa and her two kids, Ava and John-John, move to Seaside to make a new start. But, unfortunately, Vanessa has a huge undertaking when the body of a young boy appears on the midway underneath the Wonder Wheel. Bianca, nervous about the publicity that this will bring, does anything she can in order to cooperate but is hiding major secrets of her own, including sleeping with various Wonder Workers of a certain age.
What ensues is finding out how corrupt and in disarray the town really is. Vanessa's daughter begins working at Wonderland, and is even transferred to Elm Street, the parks version of a haunted area. She begins working in the Clown Museum as a performer, and is taken with one of Bianca's latest lovers, Xander Cameron, though he doesn't share her feelings due to her young age.
Vanessa, along with the help of a young detective named Donnie, begin working the missing persons cases. On top of Blake Dozier, who is known as the Wonder Wheel Kid, having free-climbed the Wonder Wheel the morning that the John Doe's body turned up, but there is also those of a few other missing boys, all around the age of 18, who have gone missing over the years. When "Homeless Harry" as the internet has dubbed him is identified as Aiden Cole, a young boy who went missing 3 years prior, Vanessa realizes that something sinister is occurring inside the park.
In the end, Vanessa is able to pinpoint that the person kidnapping and murdering the young boys is Donnie, the very detective she took under her wing. After Ava is cornered and nearly raped by the janitor named Carlos Jones, Ava finds Blake Dozier in the tunnels underneath the Clown Museum. At first it was thought their existence was a myth, but the founder of the park had built the tunnels and cells underneath the museum in order to drug and rape his victims, including that of Vanessa's secret boyfriend, Oscar; the security guard Glenn Hovey and Nick Bishop, the current owner of the park.
Donnie confesses that he can't let Ava go, but that he actually liked her mother, but in the end, his life is ended when another police officer finds Donnie and Ava fighting over the gun. He pulled the trigger without hesitation.
It is determined that Bianca Bishop had slept with Donnie during his time as a Wonder Worker, promising to love him until she felt that she no longer wanted anything to do with him. Donnie set out on a mission in order to torment the other young lovers she had, by kidnapping and eventually murdering them.
Bianca will be arrested and charged with attempted murder of her uncle, Nick Bishop. 8 years prior, Nick had confessed to Bianca that he would like to move on; he made Wonderland what it is today, and Bianca, not knowing anything other than the park itself after her life turned upside down when she was a teenager, couldn't allow him to move on, beating him nearly to death, eventually hiding his body inside of the tunnels beneath the museum where he has been for the last 8 years. Bianca, however, believed that he has been dead all of this time, using Oscar in order to move the body and kept her secret all of that time.
In the end, Wonderland wasn't what it was. It was too tainted, and even though Vanessa had just moved her family there to start anew after her own secret (she is responsible for the death of her husband, as she ended up needing to defend herself from him during one of his depression episodes, shooting him; it was determined it was an accidental shooting, and this is something that both she and the mayor of Seaside know, as he and her husband had been friends and he is the reason she got the job in Seaside) but she is going to relocate them back to Seattle, as there is too much corruption in Seaside for her to justify staying.
~I want a Chimera form for Grim! I know it's supposed to be like his overblot form, but I want him to have a tiny form and a monster form. I want to ride him into battle, I want to sic him upon my enemies. I want the DANGER FLOOF!!!!
"I do prefer remembering conversations, personally."
"I.. am not that drunk I do not think. But okay, yes. I want to talk more with you... You seem very interesting to me..."
James honestly would have preferred that the two of them didn't have any conversations - his runaway and his rebound - but he didn't think he could prevent it at this point. E was too drunk for it to matter much, she'd always been like this even if it annoyed him. Aiden on the other hand was quickly wearing thin on his frayed patience.
"You are that drunk, E. And you remember all your conversations now, don't you, Aiden? I think we both prefer it this way." He didn't feel that the threat was unwarranted.
Aiden's smirk wavered slightly at that. Warranted or not, the threat was certainly effective.
"I do, yes." He replied, more seriously than before. He took another drink of his juice. "I'm going back to bed. I guess I'll see you in the morning... sleep well."

[Henry’s frown deepens with each passing second in which the phone doesn’t connect. Outside, the lights of Paris cast their light on what has already been a long night, and looks to be even longer if the person on the other end doesn’t pick up. ...Hell, even if he does pick up, but at least then Henry’ll have one less thing keeping him wound up until daybreak.
...It’s not too late.
He can still hang up.
It hasn’t even gone to voice mail yet, could pin it on a butt dial or-
“Hunter.”
...Well, fuck that then.
The voice on the other side of the phone is smooth, low, like soft rumble of an engine or the purr of a large cat. This is one of the few times Henry doesn’t respond to it with a groan of frustration.
“...Mr Shah.”
Aiden, he’d nearly said, and the soft static of a rough connection breaks with an amused chuckle. As if he knows.
“You sound as cheerful as always, Mr Morgan. To what do I owe this phone call?”
Fuck... It takes all of Henry’s resolve not to hang up then and there, maybe toss the phone out the hotel window for good measure, as hesitation coils up in his chest, mingling with that all-too-familiar fear of indebtedness.
But his laptop lights up with another message from Nero, and he remembers why he’s doing this.
“There’s someone in Cardiff, a guy I know, looking for hunters. Italian, big scar on his face, wears a fancy suit-- can’t miss him.” There’s a thoughtful hum on the other end, urging him to continue.
“He...means no harm, twmffat just wants to mess around. But--“
“But you’re worried he’ll mess around with the wrong people, and you want someone to keep an eye on him.”
Henry’s throat goes dry. There it is. The favour.
“...Aye.”, he nods, even though Aiden’s not here to see him. In his chest, the tension grows.
“You’re an odd one, Mr Morgan. In all my years, I’ve scarcely met hunters who can stand being around a single kindred without cutting off their head, much less one whose friends seem to be kindred in their majority.”
“Aye, well, turns out we’re not big fans of corpses in our backyard are we?”
...Fuck. Fuck, that wasn’t supposed to slip out, and the call falls quiet, only static without even the breathing. Now Aiden’s gonna hang up and congratu-fucking-lations, Henry-boy, you gave away Nero’s location and God knows what they’ll do to him because You Pissed Off the Goddamn Baron-
...But Aiden chuckles. The same as before, low and amused, and Henry can picture his shaking his head in that old, vintage office of his.
“I will be the first to admit, that man would not have targeted you if my people had been more...subtle in keeping tabs on you. Although, I trust you understand why I had to do that.”
“...Aye.”, his voice cracks, stunned in disbelief. Of course he understands. With his background, in a place with Cardiff’s...unique conditions, he was a liability. A risk. And Aiden had to look out for his people. Henry can respect that.
What he doesn’t understand is why Aiden hasn’t hung up yet, why instead of offended he sounds...entertained.
“It was a gesture of...repentance for the danger I put you in. But it’s been a while since I had to apologized to kine. My methods are a bit....rusty.”
Rusty. Henry bites back a laugh. More like a cat dragging home a dead rat. ...Which, judging by the Baron’s clan and the tiger imagery scattered throughout his office...
...Oh.
“As a formal apology for the trouble the Barony of Cardiff has given you, I, Aiden Shah, extend my protection to your friend while he’s within my domain. As per the terms of the treaty, the hunter cells who are a part of the treaty will be informed that he is not an immediate threat, and is not to be killed without good reason. ...I assume you’d rather your name stay out of this?”
And now, Henry really is at a loss for words. He’d gone into this expecting to hang up with a mountain of errands to run for Aiden in return for Nero’s safety. But in the end...
“I- Aye.”, he just manages to force out, clears his throat to try and pull himself together. “I..am...grateful, Mr Shah.”
For a third time tonight that chuckle echoes through the call, but for once Henry’s way less inclined to scoff at it.
“A Baron must be fair, Mr Morgan, to his people and all others within his domain. Your friend will be safe, you have my-...word.” Aiden trails off, and even through the phone Henry can make out the commotion. That carved wooden door slamming open, and a woman talking in a language he can’t understand, her words heavy with urgency.
“Enjoy your stay in Paris, Mr Morgan. Until we meet again.”
That’s that last thing that goes through before the line goes dead and Henry is, once more, alone. Outside, Paris I just as bright as before, nothing but clear skies and the city’s lights. But in the distance clouds begin to gather...
