might you have recommendations for a book to learn more about the history and geopolitics of the middle east?
i'm having trouble understanding what the u.s could possibly hope to gain from its support of israel - does this somehow enhance its position globally? what good is that? i've tried reading some internal relations blogs, but they reference a lot of concepts / history i don't know, and i struggle to connect it to a critical perspective
sorry if this a dumb ask ): the cruelty in gaza and the west bank are completely unjustifiable and i don't ask to find reasons to think otherwise. i'm trying to understand the UN vote, which i have trouble parsing as anything other than insane
Gonna put this out for everyone to respond with their recommendations! Some books I know of but haven't read, personally:
On Palestine - Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappé, Frank Barat
Freedom is a Constant Struggle - Angela Davis
Question of Palestine - Edward Said
Wild Thorns - Sahar Khalifeh
The Butterfly's Burden - Mahmoud Darwish
Except for Palestine - Marc Lamont Hill, Mitchell Plitnick
Nakba - Ahmad Sa'di, Lila Abu-Lughod
The Hundred Years' War on Palestine - Rashid Khalidi
The Thistle and the Drone - Akbar Ahmed

What kind of black tea is most commonly drunk in Russia? What are your favorites? Sorry if this has been asked before :)
It hasn't and in any case I'm happy to talk about tea whenever!
I think regular black tea is the most common. Common flavours are earl grey, thyme, and berries (raspberry, blackberry, or a mix). Common ingredients are lemon slice, fresh mint, fresh thyme - these are often available in cafes on request.
Some of the popular tea brands are Greenfield, Ahmad, Lipton, Akbar, Azerchai.

Known for :Iran's first Trans muslim woman who successfully change her gender legally.
Occupation :Trans Activist,Rights Advocate
Spouce :Mohammad
Religion :Islam
Gender :Woman
Sexuality :Straight
Ethnicity :Persian
Death :2012
Tumblr media
Maryam Khatoon Molkara (also known as Maryam Khatoonpour Molkara) was a campaigner for trans rights in Iran, where she is widely recognized as a matriarch of the transgender community. She was later instrumental in obtaining a letter which acted as a Fatwa enabling sex reassignment surgery to exist as part of a legal framework.
Early life
Maryam Khatoon Molkara was born in 1950, she was the only child of her father's second of eight wives. Her father was a landowner. Maryam says she always preferred clothes, toys, & activities that were traditionally for girls. In her adolescence, Maryam went to parties dressed as a woman. She was often tortured & bullied for her feminine behavior. When she came out to her mother, her mother refused to accept Maryam's gender identity. This made her decide to take feminizing hormone, instead of immediately seeking out a gender affirming surgery.
Legal Recognition of Gender Identity in Iran
In 1975, Molkara traveled to London where she “learned about transsexuality & realized that she was not a passive homosexual. Molkara started to write letters to Shia Cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then in exile in Iraq, asking for religious advice about being assigned the wrong gender at birth. In one of these letters, she said that her gender identity had been clear since she was two years old, as she used to apply chalk to her face to imitate putting on make-up. Khomeini had already written in 1963 that corrective surgeries for intersex people are not against Islamic law, & his answer was based on this existing idea rather than developing a new fatwa for transgender people. He suggested she live as a woman, which included dressing as one.
After this, she met with Farah Pahlavi, who gave her support towards Molkara and other transgender individuals wanting sex reassignment surgery. In 1978, she traveled to Paris, where Khomeini was then based, to try to make him aware about transgender rights. After the Islamic Revolution, Molkara started to face intense backlash due to her gender identity. She underwent arrests, and death threats. She was fired from her job at the Iranian National Radio and Television, forced to wear masculine clothing, injected with male hormones against her will, & detained in a psychiatric institution. Eventually she was released from jail because of her good contacts with religious leaders, such as Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Molkara continued to campaign for her right to get gender-affirming surgery. In 1985, she confronted Khomeini in his home in North Tehran. She wore a man's suit, carried the Quran, and she tied shoes around her neck. This was a reference to the Ashura festival, and also indicated that she was looking for refuge.Maryam Khatoon Molkara was held back and beaten by homophobic security guards until Khomeini's brother Hassan Pasandide intervened. He took Molkara into his house, where she pleaded her case, yelling "I'm a woman, I'm a woman!" His security guards were suspicious about her chest, as they thought she could be carrying explosives. She revealed they were her breasts, as she developed them using hormone therapy. After listening her story, Ahmad Khomeini was touched & took Maryam to speak to his father, where he asked 3 of his doctors about the surgery in an attempt to make a well-informed decision.Khomeini then decided to permit sex reassignment surgery by issuing a fatwa. She left Khomeini’s house victoriously. She had a letter in her hand addressed to the Chief Prosecutor & the head of Medical Ethics giving a fatwa (a religious authorization) for her & for all those like her to have their gender surgically reassigned. That one daring step by Maryam changed the dynamics and made history in Shia Islam.
Maryam lobbied for the according medical knowledge & procedures to be implemented in Iran, and worked on helping other trans people have access to gender-affirmative surgeries.
However, Maryam completed her gender affirming surgery from Thailand in 1997, due to "unhappiness with procedures in her native country''.The Iranian govt paid for her surgery, and she was able to help establish government funding for many other trans individual's surgeries.
Trans Rights Adocacy
Maryam was a prominent advocate for trans rights & gender affirmative care.Maryam started her activism in Iran during the early days of the Islamic revolution.
In 2007, she founded and subsequently ran the Iranian Society to Support Individuals with Gender Identity Disorder (Persian: حمایت از بیماران مبتلا به اختلالات هویت جنسی ایران).This was the first state-approved transgender organization in Iran. Before this, she used her own property in Karaj to help other trans people receive legal advice & medical care, including post-op care. She continued her fight to advance the situation of transgender people in Iran. She also helped many incarcerated trans people in Iran.
Marriage
Maryam got married in a traditional Islamic way (nikah) to a government officer named Mohammad, in Tehran.
Death
Maryam Khatoon Molkara died in 2012, after suffering from a heart attack at the age of 62.

When I started practicing Islam, which was around 12 years ago alhamdulillah, my parents were such a huge obstacle in the way of trying to adhere to deen. I wasn't allowed to wear proper hijab, was sort of grounded, not allowed to read or listen to anything - even books of tafsir and hadith, not allowed to be with my other practicing friends, forced to drop out of arabic and other courses, etc etc. Home didn't feel like home but a battleground, on a daily basis.
Fast forward to present day; my family and I have dinner table discussions on matters of tawheed, my parents are the ones who facilitated my learning arabic and becoming an arabic teacher bi fadlillah (omg????), they've finished Shaykh Ahmad's tawheed series and loved it and are further learning tawheed and other aspects of deen, my mother finished tafseer ibn kathir twice already; may Allah bestow His endless blessings and mercy upon them and grant them the highest stations in Firdaws, ameen.
Thinking about how things had started and where they are now, wallahi makes me so overwhelmingly emotional. It fills my heart with so much warmth and joy that sometimes it feels like I can't contain it anymore. Allahu Akbar wa Lillahil hamd. No matter how many hundreds of sujud ash-shukr I give, it will never be enough to express my gratitude to Allah عز وجل.
Speaking from personal experience here, when it comes to giving dawah to our families, we really need to step up. They are the first we give up on, when they should be the ones we hold on to the most. Our parents are the most deserving of our time and patience and dawah, wallahi. I know the situation isn't the same for everyone, but honestly, how much do we make dua for the guidance of our families? Do we pray for them in every salah, in every sujud? Do we ardently make du'a for their hidayah every chance we get? Do we follow up our duas with constant dawah in a respectful manner and soft approach with patience and persistence? Do they see the best of us or the worst of us? Or do we just try once and then complain for the rest of our lives without giving due efforts?
Guidance is completely in the Hands of Allah, but wallahi our duas will never go to waste and we will see their impact whether tomorrow or 10 years later. It took my family 5 years to accept my dawah, it was a very gradual process but to witness their gradual change to better and better, from stubborn to being understanding, is so rewarding wallahi. To see them become even better than you, is the best feeling in the world. And it takes a lot of time and effort to come to that point.
When giving dawah to our families, we must be patient, be consistent, be persistent, be respectful, have good manners, be smart in our approach, and make lots and lots of du'a. We should priorities our families when giving dawah, because what's the point if the whole world benefits from us while we neglect our own homes?
These are the best days of the year, let us utilise them in making du'a for our families in sha Allah. May Allah guide us all and be pleased with us, ameen.

Allah calls Himself Al-Kabeer— The All Great, The Most Great, The Grand— on six occasions in the Quran. He is the One who is unimaginably great and perfect. Al-Kabeer embraces all kinds of greatness, from rank, size, nobility, and knowledge to mercy, and it tells us that nothing was, is, or will ever be like Him!
The All-Great, the One Far Greater Than Anything or Anyone
Kabeer comes from the root kaaf-baa-raa, which points to three main meanings. The first is to be great in rank and nobility and the second to be great in size. The third main meaning is to be great in age and the fourth to be great in learning and knowledge. The fifth main meaning is to have rights above all others.
This root appears 161 times in the Quran in eighteen derived forms. Examples of these forms are kabura (“is great,” or “is difficult”), fakabbir (“magnify”), mutakabbireen (“the arrogant)”, akbaru (“greater”), kibaru (“old age”), and kubra, kabeer (“great”).
Linguistically, kibriyyah refers to the concept of greatness. One who is kabeer is someone great in rank or skill. Allah is Al-Kabeer—The All-Great and The Most Great; for each of His attributes He is the greatest.
Al-Kabeer Himself says: So the judgment is with Allah, the Most High, the Grand [Quran, 40:12], . . . because Allah is the Most High, the Grand [Quran, 22:62], and . . . Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand [Quran, 4:34].
The Ranks of This World and the Hereafter
We’re naturally predisposed to admire those who are most beautiful, most intelligent, most eloquent, most powerful, most generous, most merciful, etcetera.
However Al-Kabeer Himself says: See how We prefer one above another (in this world), and verily, the Hereafter will be greater in degrees and greater in preferment [Quran, 17:21]. The poorest in this world can be the richest in the Hereafter; it all depends on one thing: your rank with Allah al-Kabeer.
How Can We Live By This Name?
1. Say a lot of takbeer.
Revive the sunnah of The Prophet ‘salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam by saying a lot of takbeer— Allahu Akbar. Abdullah ibn ‘Umar narrates that a man came late to Salāh. Upon arriving to the line he started his prayer with the following words, Allāhu Akbaru Kabīran wal-hamdulillahi kathīran wa subhān Allahi bukratan wa asīlā. The Prophet, after completing the prayer, asked the people who had said this. The man said, O Rasūlullah, I did not intend by it other than good. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, I saw the gates of heaven open because of those words. Ibn ‘Umar added, I never ceased saying these words since hearing the Prophet say that. [Muslim, At-Tirmidhee, An-Nasaa’i and Ahmad]
2. Find happiness with Al-Kabeer.
Your original nature makes you seek love and perfection and Allah Al-Kabeer is the source of all perfection. So only by turning to Him can your heart feel peace and happiness. In fact, the more you get to know about Him, His names and His attributes, the more you’ll turn to Him with true love and devotion and feel secure and peaceful with Him.
3. Magnify Al-Kabeer in the proper way.
Allah ‘azza wa jall instructs you: And magnify Your Lord [Quran, 74:3]. Words to magnify Al-Kabeer, like the tahleel (laa ilaaha illAllah) tahmeed (Alhamdulillah), tasbeeh (subhanAllah) and takbeer (Allahu akbar), have great meanings; ponder their true meanings, increase in saying them and be careful not to misuse them.
4. Seek perfection at the source.
Don’t disappoint yourself by expecting others to be perfect and admiring those with wealth or status but no emaan. By admiring your Lord, by relying on and trusting in Al-Kabeer, The All-Great, The Source of Perfection, you will never be shocked or disappointed, even better you will be amazed by His enormous rewards for your little deeds.
5. Never be arrogant.
Guard yourself against arrogance (kibr). Never look down on others; you don’t know the rank they have with Al-Kabeer. Arrogance can also be found in how you deal with the commands of Allah. Look at the sin of Iblees; he refused to bow down due to arrogance. A good tip to keep you away from disobedience to the commands of Allah is that whenever you’re about to sin, look up and imagine Al-Kabeer watching you— would you dare to look up and say “no” to Him?
6. Strive for a high rank with Al-Kabeer.
Glorify Him alone and be humble in life in order to be great in the sight of Al-Kabeer. If Allah Al-Kabeer blessed you with being kabeer in this world in knowledge, job position, or any other skill, make others benefit and truly become kabeer to Him in the Hereafter.
7. Call upon Al-Kabeer.
Make dua using this name to ask Him to lead you to deeds pleasing to Him. There is no rank higher or achievement better than attainment of Allah’s good pleasure. It is as Al-Kabeer says: Verily, to Us will be their return; and then verily, for Us will be their reckoning. [Quran, 88:25-26] Always aim high in your supplications— ask Him for Jannatul Firdaws, the higest paradise, without reckoning.
8. Be proud of your Lord.
You shouldn’t be ashamed of Allah’s religion or divine commands. When you’re offered wine to drink, don’t apologize and make excuses like, “Sorry! I have a stomach ache.” You should proudly say, “I do not drink wine because it’s forbidden in my religion of Islam.” If you really believe that Allah is Al-Kabeer, you should be proud of your Lord in all situations, places, and company.
9. Feel your takbeer.
What is really akbar in your life? The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam taught you to say Allahu akbar at the start and during your whole salah. Whenever you say, or hear, Allahu Akbar in prayer or the adhaan (call to Prayer), know what it really means. Know that Al-Kabeer is far greater than anything that you could ever imagine or think of. When you raise your hands to start your prayer, imagine you’re throwing the whole world behind you and all is about Allahu akbar.
O Allah, Al-Kabeer, we know that Your Greatness is perfect and beyond our imaginations. Help us to reflect on Your greatness in order for us to stay close to Your commandments. Inspire us to magnify you in a proper way. Adorn us with pride in Islam, protect us from arrogance, and make us of those who attain the highest ranks with You in the Highest Paradise without reckoning, ameen!

If your are not at Hajj you still qualify for this:
Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallam) said:
“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of tahlil (Laa Ilaaha ill-Allah), Takbir (Allahu Akbar) and Tahmid (Alhamdulillah).”
Ahmad
THE TAKBIR IS AS FOLLOWS:
“Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillaah il-Hamd”
(Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, there is no god but Allah; Allah is Most Great and to Allah be praise).
These are the best Zikr especially in the blessed days of Dual Hijjah…Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told us that each word plants a tree for you in Paradise and weighs like Uhad mountain…Can you imagine this?
The same as Ramadan is an intensive educational & training course in Quran, the 10 of Dual Hijjah is, but in Zikr.
Somebody asks: “When should I say these Zikr?”
Brothers and sisters in Islam, the answer is ” Train yourself to say it frequently…Train yourself…Train yourself”
1- On your way to work, school or back home, meanwhile working, on errands, walking to the market or whatever.
Repeat it “Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillaah il-Hamd”
2- Lying in bed before sleeping.
Feel it: “Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillaah il-Hamd”
3- Meanwhile chit chatting, or eating…Stop for a second, feel the words and say them.
Enjoy it: “Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillaah il-Hamd”
4- On your way to pray five times a day at the mosque, or before parying at time at home for women.
Contemplate about it:“Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillaah il-Hamd”
Mathematically speaking, if you managed to do this, you would say it not less than 400 times a day which is equal to 400 trees in the Paradise, let alone if you multiple this for the 10 days of Dual hijjah…Please be honest with yourself who can lose this free treasures? Some of us may think that the virtues of the 10 blessed days of Dhul-Hijjah are only for the hujjaj. Yes, the hujjaj will be doing the best ‘ibaadah that any of us can do in these days, but what about those who can't go for Hajj? Are we deprived of the virtues of these 10 days?
Absolutely not, alhamdulillah. The Rabb of the Ka’bah is the same Rabb that we all worship. So what can we non-hujjaj do? Here are some recommendations, bismillah:
✔️ Fix the quality of our obligatory acts of worship, eg. our daily salaah, and our relationship with our parents and family. Always get our obligatory ‘ibaadah covered first.
✔️ Make sincere tawbah and istighfar. Dhul-Hijjah is the last month of the hijri year, and it’s a great reminder for us to take stock of our shortcomings and sins. Be honest and ask ourselves: Am I happy with the ‘ibaadah I did this year?
✔️ Fast the first 9 days of Dhul-Hijjah (don’t fast on the 10th – that’s the day of ‘Eid).
✔️ If we have difficulties to fast on any of these days, then at least fast on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah because of its immense reward: For just one single day of fasting, Allah expiates our sins of 2 years — the past, and the coming year. [Sahih Muslim 1162b]
✔️ Make dhikr abundantly even as we walk, or idling at home. It doesn't take much, just a simple mindfulness while we do remembrance of Allah. And the best adhkaar in the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah are: Tahleel (Laa ilaaha illAllah), Takbeer (Allahu Akbar), and Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah). [Musnad Ahmad 5423]
✔️ Increase in doing other voluntary 'ibaadah such as optional salaah, reciting the Qur’an, giving in charity, making supplications, doing da’wah, and other good deeds.
Remember that good deeds done in these 10 days are more beloved to Allah than any other day in the entire year. May Allah help us utilise these days to the best of our capability, and accept from us.

Sudahkah kita bersyukur setiap harinya?
Abu Hurairah r.a. berkata bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda, “Sesungguhnya Allah memilih empat bacaan: subhanallah wal hamdulillah wa la ilâha illallahu wallahu akbar.

Sad Shayari

Salah (Prayer) inside the Ka’bah (Hijr) is preferred and is a means of drawing close (to Allaah)
Making Takbir, then du’aa to Allaah after praying two rak’ah inside the Ka’bah (Hijr) is a Sunnah
Question: Is salat inside the Ka’bah in any way superior to salat outside it, and is it permissible for a person to speak of what he has seen inside the ka’bah?
Answer:
Salat inside the Ka’bah is preferred, if it is possible to do so without any inconvenience, difficulty or harm to anyone, as the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) entered it and prayed therein, according to an authentic narration in the Sahihain (Two Sahihs). And it has been reported from him (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) that he came out one day looking sad, and he said: “Verily, I fear that I may have placed a burden upon my Ummah (i.e. by entering the ka’bah).” [1]
And when ‘A`ishah (radiallaahu ‘anha) asked him about salat in the Ka’bah, he said: “Pray in the Hijr, because it is a part of the House.” [2]
This proves that salat inside the Ka’bah is preferred and is a means of drawing close (to Allaah) and an act of obedience, and in it is great merit.
However, it is not fitting that there should be crowding, or harm, or doing anything which causes difficulty to him or to the people. It is enough for him to pray in the Hijr, because it is a part of the House; and there is no objection to speaking about what he has seen inside the Ka’bah, such as its inscriptions, or what is on its ceiling or the like. There is no objection to a person talking and saying: “I saw such and such and such and such.” There is no sin in that.
The Sunnah, when one enters the Ka’bah, is to pray two rak’ahs and to say “Allaahu Akbar” and invoke Allaah, the Almighty, the All-Powerful with whatever supplications are easy for him at the end of it, especially those which have been reported (from the Prophet, salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) because the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) entered the Ka’bah and prayed therein, then he performed Takbir and supplicated Allaah. All of this has been authentically reported from him (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).

The Day of Arafah
"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion." {Surah al Maa'idah 5:3}
Imam Ibn Kathir in his tafsir says:
"Imam Ahmad recorded that Tariq bin Shihab said, "A Jewish man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.' `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, `Which is that verse?' The Jew replied:
"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion."
Umar replied, "By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah's Messenger ﷺ. It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday."
The above narration is vital in understanding the importance and great virtue of the beautiful day of Arafah, It should be taken by muslims as a day of both celebration and gratitude towards Allah ﷻ for granting us guidance to His perfect religion and for the opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.
It is on this very day that the Hujjaj gather in the plain of Arafat, many of them standing on the Mountain of Mercy itself, calling out to Allah ﷻ for His mercy, forgiveness, and infinite favor. Many describe this as the most important day in their entire life.
It is on this day that Rasoolullahi ﷺ delivered his farewell sermon in which He ﷺ said, “Verily your blood and your property are as sacred and inviolable as the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this town of yours… I have left among you the Book of Allah, and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray.” {Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 159}
Given that the Day of Arafah holds such value and virtue in Islam, as Muslims who are not performing the Hajj, we should strive to still make the most of this golden opportunity by fasting, reciting the takbeerat, remembering Allah ﷻ, and making lots of dua for ourselves and the ummah.
As the Blessed Prophet ﷺ has said, “The most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said, is:
There is nothing that deserves to be worshiped in truth except Allah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things.” {Muwatta}
Tahleel is to say "Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah"
Takbeer is to say "Allahu Akbar"
Tahmeed is to say "Alhamdulillaah"
Tasbeeh is to say "Subhanallaah"
