It is so unbelievably frustrating how the algorithm timeline keeps defaulting in a place that has been free of algo bullshit for so long. I cannot tell if it’s a glitch or if they’re just pushing it intentionally. It’s at least easy to go back to the following feed, but with bluesky users more and more depending on the discover feed and tumblr defaulting to the algorithm timeline it just feels like ‘be twitter’ is the shitty destiny being pushed everywhere.

i wonder if y'all even realize how little tumblr staff cares about the general userbase XD

literally don't even hide it, don't even try to XD

they know that people who are here for 5-10+ years won't leave, hence they don't give a fuck whatever you're comfortable or enjoying yourself.

maybe they'll care when the same userbase stops buying crabs and paying for fake twitter marks and ad-free dash :)

since the "new and infrequent users" sure as hell are not the ones buying those things. but hey. get money from the general userbase and only serve the "new and infrequent" users. right?

Am I the only one who is seeing masses of content on my dash from people I'm not following? Also content from groups I am not a member of and don't plan to try & join? I've checked and I still have things set to just see material from blogs I follow. But I am a tumblr oldie and a bear of very little brain, and may well have missed some random stupid development that is supposed to "enhance my experience" or some such BS...

#speculation nation #title 'code' email is just 'hi'. with the .c file attached of course #honestly i had a very productive day in lab today. i got the core structure of the program down and made sure it all worked #testing it with One of the sorting algorithms. and it worked!!#the lab is to code functions for different kinds of sorts. like bubble sort selection sort and uhh. some other shit idr rn #and have the functions take timestamps from before and after they run the sorts to calculate the elapsed time #and we have to run this for array sizes of like. 10 50 500 etc etc up to like 50000 or smth? if i remember right.#and then once all that's done we take the output and graph the time elapsed for each type of sort/search per array sizes #so today at lab i made the random array generator function. a swap function. the execution function. bubble sort. and main.#main calls the execution function passing in the array sizes. execution(10); execution(50); etc #execution defines the array of that size. then calls the random number generator to populate the array. then passes it to the sort functions #tested with my one bubble sort function. which finished in like 0.00003 seconds or smth for array size 10 #BUT taking the time stamps was tricky. there are a lot of ways to do that. and time(); in c is in full seconds #i ended up asking the TA if he had a recommendation for what to use bc theres a LOT of time functions out there #and full seconds isnt precise enough for this purpose. & he recommended clock()!!#records number of clock ticks which is NOT the same as seconds. but when u divide it by uh. forgetting it rn but it's a constant #that will turn it into actual seconds. clock tics per sec?? smth like that.#so anyways very productive 👍 i just need to set main up to call execution function for all the different array sizes #and then write all the functions for the different sorts/searches. but i have the core structure down with the bubble sort function #(specifically with the time stamps and the print function after) that i will copy-paste for all the other functions #and then inside them i put the basic code. none of it's complicated. all can be found on the internet easy.#SO!!!!! honestly i think itd take me less than an hour to finish. tho plotting out that graph is going to be annoying #something like 6 sizes per 5 sort/search functions. painstakingly copy pasting each one into excel or smth lol #but yea im content with how much ive gotten done. yippee!!!!#now i just need to finish my web programming lab before sunday night. blehhhhh

I hate guides for new users that are like DO ALL THIS RIGHT FUCKING NOW OR ELSE for stuff like... algorithms and privating your likes. like yeah most tumblr users prefer it like that. why do you have to though. it's not like your account will implode if you leave your follows public or whatever. Letting people know about those settings is a good idea, for sure, but... why so aggressive

An explainer for why I don't fuck with algorithmic social media

If you give a pigeon a little button to peck that releases pigeon food, it will push the button when it's hungry.

If you give a pigeon a button to peck that releases food every 5 pecks, it will peck it more often.

If you give a pigeon a button to peck that releases food at a randomly selected, always shifting number of pecks, the pigeon will peck that fucking button all day long.

Algorithm based social media is not set up to give you the best most fun stuff all the time, it is set up to give you a bunch of stress and nothingness with a randomized reward of something that actually makes you happy, because they want you pecking that button all damn day. It is a slot machine of content, meant to keep you putting in quarters made of your time and attention till you've nothing left.

At least if I'm having a shit day on my own Tumblr home feed it's because I've made a bad choice about who to follow and I can fix it.

Youtube what the heck do you think you're doing?

First, they changed from 4 thumbnails per row to 3 -okay fair I can see why 4 per row meant that the individual thumbnails and therefore also the titles were a little small / shortened, even though I liked it better before - but TWO PER ROW?!

Look at this shit:

That's my whole damn 13'' screen! For two ginormous thumbnails. How am I supposed to like .. see anything? I'm just getting blasted with 'thumb'nails (now they're more the size of my entire hand). I want an overview of videos to choose from, not really close up pictures right in my face!

#thank god the subscription tab still has 3 thumbnails per row #no offense to hbomberguy but seeing his face that close up was a jumpscare #welp I wanted to stop my scrolling-through-yt-frontpage-habit anyways so I guess now's the time to only rely on my subscription feed #I thiiink they changed it in an attempt to get more engagement because 'oh biig pictures!' is better clickbait than reading the titles #and / or giving an overview of choices means people are more selective in what they watch so they ventured more towards tiktok style #with only one video that fills the screens: You Must Obey The Mighty Algorithm And Only Watch What Gets Put Right In Front Of You #can't wait until they start autoplaying the videos while scrolling the frontpage #*eyeroll*
