Okay so Allentown, Pennsylvania (it's two hours away from me) has a highschool called Whitehall High, in the Whitehall-Coplay District (Coplay, pronounced "Cop-ly," maybe?, is a town adjacent to or a suburb of Allentown). Their mascot is the Zephyr, some old train that was specifically important to the area at one time.

I like this. All schools need to do this. Get a mascot that is specific to YOU, and the area's history. No more stupid Wildcats or Vikings or Mustangs or whatever, you lazy bastards. This school has a cool train with a cool name as their mascot.

And they just unveiled the costume for it, that they paid some company in California a lot of money to develop.

And it is my new favorite thing ever.

Ladies and gentlemen and fellow queers, meet "Big Z":

No, this isn't a bit from Community or Arrested Development. This is...Big Z.

This link has video. You don't understand. You NEED to see this. Things like this happen every day in our world, but only rarely are they captured on camera. And thank God when they are.

People in the local area are REAL mad about this. That a lot of money was spent on this, and the results are...well! And sure, I understand why. I mean, I see it, too. It's...Big Z.

But where is your sense of whimsy? Of childlike delight? Of snarky ironic smugness?

I don't care what Allentown thinks. I still love you, Big Z. You and your big bucket train face.

(Also, the fact that the name of the district has a word that is one letter off from being the word "cosplay" is one of those quirks of reality that makes life so much fun. Fun, like Big Z.)
