Warning other "Rings of Power" fans as Samba TV reported some of the US ratings and of course those haters who want the show cancelled are having a field day with it as it's reporting a 50% drop in viewers from s1 in the US. However, Samba TV is limited with what they report as they only count Smart TVs, so people like me who have an older TV and use a Roku device that plugs into it aren't counted as are those that use their phones, tablets, or laptops. They also only judge US and not globally. The real ratings will be in about 3 weeks when Nielsen releases their streaming chart for the week, but again that's only US ratings and not the global numbers. Also the 50% drop also just happened to "House of the Dragon" s2 compared to their 1st season with Samba's reporting. "ROP" has also been at the top of most of Amazon's countries' lists this past week too on their app so the global numbers are much higher when you combine them all.
We already know "ROP" has been renewed for season 3 since last year, which is supposed to film next year going by what some of the actors have said. If anything this would affect the 4th or 5th seasons they have planned, if this even comes to that. They won't just outright cancel it, but likely do budget cuts, trim the cast, and/or combine season 4 and 5 into one season. There's really nothing to worry about yet and like always ignore any of those comments from the haters.

How to Set Up and Get the Most from Your Amazon Fire TV Stick: Your Key to Effortless Travel
In the age of digital convenience, the Amazon Fire TV Stick has emerged as a must-have travel companion for those who want their favorite shows, apps, and media at their fingertips wherever they go. Whether you're heading on a family vacation, a business trip, or a solo adventure, this compact device ensures your entertainment stays personalized and portable.
Here’s your complete guide to setting up the Amazon Fire TV Stick and making the most of its features during your travels.

Why the Amazon Fire TV Stick is Perfect for Travel
The Amazon Fire TV Stick transforms any compatible TV into a smart TV within minutes. It plugs directly into the HDMI port of your television, allowing you to stream content from services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and YouTube.
But what makes it especially ideal for travel?
Portability: Small and lightweight—easy to pack in your carry-on or backpack.
Personalized Experience: Take your favorite apps, profiles, and settings with you.
Universal Compatibility: Works with most hotel or Airbnb TVs that have HDMI ports.
Offline Access: Download compatible apps and games to use even with limited connectivity.
How to Set Up Your Amazon Fire TV Stick While Traveling
Setting up your Fire TV Stick on the go is fairly simple. Here's how to do it:
1. Pack Everything You Need
Before hitting the road, make sure you’ve packed:
Your Fire TV Stick
The remote control (with batteries)
Power adapter and USB cable
HDMI extender (optional but helpful in tight spaces)
A portable Wi-Fi hotspot or know the details of your accommodation’s Wi-Fi
2. Plug It In
Once you reach your destination:
Plug the Fire TV Stick into an available HDMI port on the TV.
Connect the USB power cable to the Stick and plug it into the wall using the power adapter (most hotel TVs won’t supply enough power through USB ports alone).
Turn on the TV and select the correct HDMI input.
3. Connect to Wi-Fi
This is where many travelers run into issues, especially with hotel Wi-Fi that requires a browser-based sign-in. To get around this:
Use your smartphone’s hotspot feature for a seamless connection. Alternatively, bring a portable travel router that logs into hotel Wi-Fi and shares the signal with your Fire TV Stick.
Fire TV also has a "captive portal" browser that can help you log into networks requiring web authentication.
4. Log In to Your Amazon Account
If it's your first time using the Stick, you'll need to log in with your Amazon credentials. This lets you access your content and download additional apps from the Appstore.
Making the Most of Your Amazon Fire TV Stick on the Road
Once you’re connected and set up, it’s time to maximize what this device can do for you while traveling.
1. Customize Your Home Screen
Arrange your favorite apps on the home screen for easy access. Whether it’s Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+, you want quick access to your go-to platforms.
2. Use Alexa Voice Remote
The Alexa-enabled remote makes it easier to search for content hands-free. Ask questions like:
“Find comedy movies.”
“Play Stranger Things on Netflix.”
“What’s the weather like tomorrow?”
This feature saves time and adds convenience, especially when using foreign remotes or unfamiliar TVs.
3. Enable Parental Controls
Traveling with kids? You can enable parental controls to restrict mature content and set PINs for app purchases or video playback.
4. Download Content Ahead of Time
For flights or areas with unreliable internet, pre-download content using the Prime Video app on your mobile device. While Fire TV Stick itself doesn’t store downloads, pairing it with your phone via screen mirroring can help.
5. Play Games and Use Other Apps
The Amazon Appstore has a collection of games and utility apps you can use without needing a full internet connection. Consider installing:
Puzzle games
Travel guides Language learning apps Meditation and wellness apps Tips for Using Amazon Fire TV Stick Internationally
Traveling abroad? Keep these tips in mind:
Use a VPN: Some content is geo-restricted. A VPN app installed directly on your Fire TV Stick can give you access to your home country’s content.
Check Voltage and Adapter Needs: The power adapter is typically universal, but plug adapters may be needed depending on the country.
Understand Regional Restrictions: Some services may not be available in certain countries, even with a VPN.
Troubleshooting Common Travel Issues
Problem: Hotel Wi-Fi won’t connect Solution: Use a travel router, smartphone hotspot, or the Stick’s captive portal browser.
Problem: Remote isn’t working Solution: Check the batteries, re-pair the remote via Bluetooth settings, or use the Fire TV app on your phone as a remote.
Problem: Streaming is slow or buffering Solution: Lower the video resolution under settings or connect to a faster network source.
Final Thoughts: Travel Smarter with the Amazon Fire TV Stick
The Amazon Fire TV Stick is more than just a streaming device—it's your personalized entertainment hub, even when you're away from home. Its portability, ease of use, and wide range of features make it the perfect tool for travelers who value comfort, convenience, and connection.
Whether you're winding down in a hotel room after a long day or trying to entertain the kids during a rainy vacation day, this device brings the familiar to unfamiliar places. Don’t leave home without it.
Pro Tip: Before you travel, make a checklist of everything you need for setup—and do a quick test run on a different TV to make sure all parts are functional.

max's top books of 2023 :3c
as usual, these rankings are based on some arcane mix of objective quality + my personal enjoyment (previous year's lists)
it was another weird reading year! i did a lot of reading for school, more so than in the past; some of it was really good and some of it was, uh. well, some of it was william wordsworth. nothing i absolutely loathed, though (most of the reads i disliked were books i could at least appreciate on an art/history level), which is cool. so i'm bringing back the runner-up category. did not make it onto my top ten list but were really good anyway: beartown by fredrik backman (books that no joke made me understand why people are insane about sports) and the GORGEOUS re-release of my dear @yvesdot 's debut, something's not right, which i have read before but will always gladly revisit again.
my top anticipated release for 2024 is alecto the ninth again.
(but shoutout also to just happy to be here, king cheer, and henry henry. trans people! shakespeare, even!)
and the list! in increasing order of enjoyment, with pictures this year!
10. The Common Liar by Janet Adelman
no, i can't believe i'm doing this either. i can't believe i did all that preamble and the first book on my list is an academic thesis analyzing shakespeare's antony and cleopatra. but also? it's the only book anyone ever needs to write about shakespeare's antony and cleopatra. janet adelman said it all. which is cool, because i have a fixation on that play, but also sucks, because i was also trying to write an essay on it and mine wasn't nearly as good. btw if anyone wants to buy this for me, somehow, for the $120 it costs on amazon because academia is awful, i will send you my address,
9. Robert Icke's Oresteia
i don't need to say anything about this play, because it's the source of "this was always going to happen. she's been dead since the beginning." that should be enough. but after becoming deranged about the oresteia last year, i finally read this, and holy shit, this adaptation of the story is so fucking genius and icke's writing is so fucking good. it's antiwar! it's about mental illness! there's gender! the fucking ENDING! (i have a pdf if anyone would like it. anything to plug this play bark bark bark rufrufruf grrrrrr)
8. Down Girl: the Logic of Misogyny by Kate Manne
this is a little bit cheating, because i haven't finished this book yet, so maybe in the final chapters manne will say something like "what if we blew up every orphan" and i'll have to retract this. but right now it's fucking excellent! i've been making an effort to read more nonfiction lately, and this one shines; manne sets out to analyze misogyny not as a personal hatred of women that some men harbor, but as an intricate and structural system forcing women into the role of Giving (attention, affection, power, etc; sometimes their lives). and it's sooooo smart. some of it is stuff i already know (and some of it is Academic Philosophy TM that goes right over my head), but manne articulates her point excellently and i can feel it rearranging my brain, so it's going on the list for longevity and skill!
7. Dictator by Robert Harris
does this book objectively deserve to be on this list? you know what, yeah. i'll say it with my whole chest. i don't like how harris writes women and there are plenty of things to pick at in his cicero trilogy, but i had so much goddamn fun reading it that i can't not put it on the list. this was my year of being really really into cicero, and this was fun to read alongside e-pistulae. harris is sooooo good at making ancient roman politics gripping. the last scenes of this book. augh. ack. ough!
6. Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters
there are a lot of valid critiques of this one (a lot of bad critiqus, too, but such is writing literally anything about transness), but i fucking adored it. i LOVE dual timelines, i LOVE unlikable characters, and i FUCKING LOVE TRANSSEXUALITY! moreover, i love that peters isn't afraid to Go There, to poke at the messy ugly sides of transness (and queerness in general) that i think a lot of us don't like acknowledging, especially to cishet people whose view of the community is already skewed. i don’t think this is the One Great Trans Novel; i think there are a lot of great trans novels, and we need more. but this one did hit me RIGHT in the chest, and i couldn't put it down.
5. Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane
the iliad but achilles is a trans woman and she's fighting the war on both mortal and divine levels and she and helen have an insane homoerotic half-god rivalry and everybody is fucking crazy. pitched as "for fans of TSOA" but as i said in my review if TSOA is a pleasant but watery iced tea then this book is gasoline laced with crack. there is a bisexual transgender threesome. i fucking love women. book of the fucking summer
4. White Teeth by Zadie Smith
i probably enjoyed wrath goddess sing more, but i can't not rank this book highly on this list. this book is such a fucking masterpiece. it's tolstoy for the modern age. it's a sprawling multi-familial multi-cultural multi-generational epic about race and gender and religion and science and humanity and britishness. smith's prose is fucking amazing; her character work is even better; this book has no plot but it uses its length sooooooo well. the first zadie smith i've read, but by god there will be more. she wrote this at TWENTY-FIVE. that's fucking CRAZY. do you know how much control over your craft you have to have to write this at twenty-five. bonkers. it is also the only enjoyable book i read in my modern literature class, so shoutout to white teeth for keeping me sane,
3. The Secret to Superhuman Strength by Alison Bechdel
this book is ostensibly about bechdel's relationship with exercise. it is actually about bechdel's relationship with her own body, her own soul, her desire for individualism in the style of the transcendentalists, transcendentalism in general, mortality, and aging. i can't really tell you more than that because i didn't actually "read" this so much as i absorbed it through my skin like a frog while trying not to tremble like a little purse dog. i am not gonna lie man i did not have a very good. um. august. or september. or october november december. so this book really could not have come at a better time. alison bechdel i am obsessed with you
2. The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel
ALISON BECHDEL I AM OBSESSED WITH YOU!!!! this one narrowly edges out secret to superhuman strength because... well, i'm sort of rating the entire comic strip's run, and dude. holy shit. i love lesbians so much. this strip is such an important piece of lesbian history; it reminded me that a lot of the things lesbians (and LGBT people in general) argue about and deal with today are... the same things we've always argued about and dealt with, from intracommunity label discourse to global politics to hitting on women badly. but history aside--it's also just really fucking good! it's really funny! if you are a neurotic leftist, as so many of us are, it's hysterical! it's smart! it's hot! it's heartwarming! i read it over the first half of the year, in little bits and pieces, and by the end i felt like i really had gone decades with these characters. really just. so good. the power she has the range she has
1. the suzanne collins reread
okay. this one is definitely cheating. because i usually like to keep this list to books i'm reading for the first time, and i HAVE read the hunger games and the underland chronicles. but i read them, like, almost ten years ago, and i was not prepared to be so thoroughly fucking bodied by them this time around, now that i have critical thinking and analysis skills. we all know the hunger games is a fucking banger, so let me pitch the gregor the overlander series: something of a modern alice in wonderland setup, where the eleven-year-old main character falls into an underground world full of strangeness, except this world isn't whimsical, it's dangerous and stuffed with giant talking animals like bats and rats and cockroaches. there's a war on. there are plagues. there are war crimes. there is a plotline that is extremely explicitly about ethnic cleansing. there is some of the most heartbreaking fucking shit you've ever read in your goddamn life. there is also a rat who quotes macbeth and the underlanders revere a guy named bartholomew of sandwich. this series is for middle schoolers. i cried. not when i was a middle schooler reading it the first time; i mean now. so i'm breaking my no-rereads rule, because it really would be a lie to say that my best reading experience wasn't revisiting all of collins' work with my friends (yes, i read TBSOS; i think it's fine but not great). sorry to give publicity to an author who definitely doesn't need my help, but a few years ago my #1 spot went to shakespeare, so.
if you've read this far: thank you! please tell me your thoughts! tell me your favorite books of 2023! tell me which books you're excited for in 2024! and have a very lovely new year :)

Ask game but only prime numbers >7
I cannot believe you made me google lists of primes for this.
(11) What's something you saved up for and then regretted buying? hmmmmm… I'm a big impulse purchaser so I've bought lots of amazon junk that I ended up not using or needing, but anything I've had to save for I've thought a lot about and liked. I guess my upright plug-in dyson. It's hard to maneuver and awkward. If you're going to get a plug in, the canister dyson is much better and easier to use.
(13) Which filter are you most likely to go "eh, it's probably fine" when you find out you need to change it? Definitely my house AC and car cabin AC filters. Especially because I got a new car and the cabin AC filter is a PAIN to change. This is a bad idea by the way! I almost broke my home AC because the filter was too old and restricting air flow
(17) What's a movie you saw recently that you liked? NOSFERATU 2024!!! It was so good! And I'm not really a goth/horror/romance person. I also saw the animated movie Flow, which was excellent.
(19) What's your go-to tape? I use black duct tape from gorilla for heavy-duty stuff. Clear plastic packing tape for light-duty, and painter's tape for delicate surfaces. For setting up Frosthaven, which is a complex board game with lots of tiles that sit on top of the board, I discovered a very weak scotch tape that's awesome for temporarily sticking cardboard pieces to each other without ripping the pictures up when it's removed.
(23) Paper bags, plastic bags, or reusable bags? Re-usable bags all the way. I'm very good about using them and always have an extra in my car. I do occaisionally grab a paper bag anyway, because I use them as car trash bags.
(29) Go-to holiday card format? I don't send holiday cards.
(31) Do you still own your first car? Absolutely not. That was a beautiful navy-blue honda accord but my parents sold it over 10 years ago.
(37) Do you still listen to the same music you listened to in high school? Definitely. I rarely delete things from my playlists, so it ends up as this layered record of my listening habits over the years.
(41) What's the oldest thing you own? Some fancy pens and other small heirlooms I inherited from my dad, which are 20-30 years old.
(43) Favorite book you've read recently? Recently re-read both Spinning Silver and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel. Both of these are in my Top 5 books EVER, and reading them whips every single time.
(47) Lamps or overhead lighting? LAMPS. This is a thing I've learned from my current partner. I still use overhead lighting in certain situations where I really need to see, like packing or playing games, but otherwise it's dimmed lamps. Our whole house has hue smart bulbs, so it's great for diffuse, dim, warm lights.
(53) What's worse, the DMV or the Social Security Office? I've never been to the SSO, so I guess the DMV, but I've never had a horrible experience there either.
(59) If you died and your ghost was stuck in the outfit you're wearing right now for the rest of time, would you be happy with it? Yeah sure. It's a polo and jeans and my work boots. A pretty standard outfit for me.
(61) Do you have a favorite brunch spot? I do! La Guadalupana in Houston. Very no-frills, but delicious mexican breakfast and coffee on the weekends. In Austin, it's cafe Magnolia, but unless you get there early you're going to be waiting for about two hours on the weekend.
(67) Do you keep any stuffed animals on your bed? I do not. I do sleep with four pillows though. One under my head, one under my knees (or between if I'm on my side) and one big one on either side of me to hug. It's super comfortable and great for my back.

coping with chronic illness: a guide in the making
Firstly, just a reminder that everyone experiences chronic illness & disability differently, even if they have the same diagnosis! This is what works for me, for my diagnoses and severity levels. I am quite fortunate that despite the seriousness of my diagnoses, I am still at a medium impact level. They affect my daily life, but I am still mobile and not overly restricted in the activities/etc that I'm able to participate in, and my coping mechanisms reflect that.
This list includes both prescription medications and over-the-counter stuff as well as daily life-hacks. Again, this is just what works for me - always consult with your doctor or care team before trying any of the meds listed here.
Things that help with frequent migraines:
Having multiple ice packs, ideally the type that double as eye masks or go over your head (search 'migraine ice cap' on amazon, it should come up). My first point of call for headaches of all severity levels.
900mg prescription aspirin. Take it at the start of a migraine. If you find this does pretty much nothing (or helps to the same amount as typical pain medication), then switch to Relpax 40mg.
Smart plugs for your bedroom lights, so you can control them from your phone. Excellent for when you can't get up to turn them off without feeling nauseous/utterly horrible. This is helpful for a lot of different types of chronic illness, I've found
While black-out curtains are nice, I personally prefer investing in a good padded sleep eye mask. I prefer having the option to put it on/off as needed without having to leave my bed. Plus, it's not all or nothing the way it would be w/blackout curtains, as there's still small amounts of ambient light seeping through the normal blinds. (Also helpful for people coming in to check on you, so you won't be disturbed by an opening door)
Stuffed animals. Sometimes even the noise of someone else being in the same room can get too much (even if not sensory wise but just mentally overwhelming, when all of your energy is taken by dealing with the migraine). Stuffed animals are my first port of call for comfort
Iced coffee. This one is a point of contention between me and my other migraine having friends, but I stand by it. When I have a migraine, drinking any type of fluid is the last thing I want to do, but adding a caffeine-withdrawal headache into the mix isn't worth it. Drink the coffee, or go off it all together.
Things that help with fibromyalgia and (autoimmune) arthritis:
PEA Supplements. I take 1200mg a day (spaced out morning/night), this can be ordered as 400mg tablets from Amazon pretty easily. It's for generalised chronic pain, but my dad literally has nerve damage and it made a difference for him, too, when he tried it. Makes a HUGE difference, even within a week of taking it.
Wrist and knee braces. Self explanatory, but they help with the joint pain.
Prescription Plaquenil 300mg for the fibro. Brought my fibro pressure points / markers down from the max (28 I think) to 21 in 6 months of taking it.
Things that help with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS):
Things that help with POTS:

Perhaps too broad a question but I’ve moved into a new place and I don’t know where to begin with decorating. The actual features of the space are uninspiring, there’s some dark brown leather sofas I’m unsure of how to style etc, where do I start!
Hm. Okay so if you have no obvious architectural features to work with, then I would start with making some. I'm assuming this is a rental, so that means you'll have to use furniture. This got long so under the cut...
My absolute favorite thing to do with a meh space is make a wall of bookcases - Ikea Billy's in a variety of widths + an interesting combination of shelves (mix up the heights and mix glass and wood) can look amazing. Don't forget the lighting - buy the super thin wire down lights (from ikea or Amazon or elsewhere) and stick them in the top of each bookcase (you can slip the wire between the back and the frame), add lamps and spotlights actually in the bookcase (you'll have to cut holes in the back of the bookcases to get the plug through but an exacto knife will sort you out, just do your cutting before you attach the back). Put all the lights into one multi plug and put that into a smart plug and voila, you've got an amazing feature that you can pack up and take with you. Below is my old bookshelf wall, ignore the mess on the table.

Other ideas: get some statement furniture, like a coffee table or vintage sideboard or something and make that the feature. Set up the room so that piece is where your attention is drawn. You can also do a gallery wall - there's a million tutorials online but that's a really easy way to fill space and upgrade a bland area. If you have good windows, make them more of a statement with curtains - you can get reasonably priced ones from ikea and Etsy. Make sure to put the rod close to the ceiling and ideally get curtains long enough to touch the floor, it's an instant way to make your ceilings look higher. Do NOT cover the windows with the curtains, they should hang to the side to make the window appear larger.
But my overall, biggest piece of advice: to avoid the sad, made.com showroom effect, you've got to mix vintage and modern. Get out to auction houses, antique stores, car boot sales, Etsy, eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc and get hunting. This is by far the easiest and most versatile way to solve your problem - when your furniture has personality, it can do a lot of heavy lifting for bland features. Find a piece you love and let that inspire the space for you. For me, it was my French 1930s coffee table with the swan legs (an Etsy find). That set the tone for the whole room (1930s! Feminine! Frivolous!).
Good luck, this is going to be fun! (Below, a photo of the coffee table for posterity).
