Micah Bell headcanons:
He's only ever seen sleeping after he's gotten drunk so I imagine he has nightmares (aside from the fact he has extreme trust issues and can't let his guard down enough to sleep)
He didn't have a relationship with his mother or she died when he was little or she was abused by her husband. He never mentions her, we don't know anything about her. We know what his view on women is like. I imagine he got it from his father. He definitely wasn't born out of love
He took the majority of his father's wrath. We know firstborn Bells are traditionally named the same, so I believe there was a lot of pressure there
He's actually not all that cynical. He wants to be. All that talk of "nothing matters" is him trying to convince himself
He secretly wants companionship. It's been confirmed that he wanted Dutch to be a part of some sort of family of his. I don't think he's as much of a lone wolf as he wishes he was
He has abandonement issues. His brother left him and made another family and it affected Micah. It's seen in the fact he wrote to Amos as well as his behavior after his brother's answer. After Amos cuts ties with him for good he says "I want tomorrow to mean more than today. I want this whole damn shitshow to have some kinda meanin I haven't understood". He secretly resented his brother for doing what he never could - make a connection. He can only talk to people if he's riling them up
His father definitely forced him to perform his first kill. Probably when he was very young, so he would "toughen up"
In theory, I can see him having a somewhat good relationship. If his partner was tough they would have his respect. Trust would definitely take a while, vulnerability even more so, but I think he would show care in his own way - being posessive and protective, letting them handle his guns and horse (peak trust). We know how much he cares for his belongings. There would probably be passionate, adrenaline-filled sex after action, patching up wounds, cleaning guns together. A "partners in crime" sort of thing
He'd probably like bites and scratches during sex. Marking up his partner as well
He gave into the "hardened outlaw" life because he believes those are the cards he was dealt and the only ones he would ever have. He probably never thought he had a chance to be anything else
He definitely has a phobia of dogs or something similar. He very avidly reacted to Cain every time he got close, he even flinched one time
He genuinely laughed with Javier when they were drunk. He even said "I love you fellas". There was definitely a humane side of him, very deep down
His father never held any pride for him, god forbid praise. He craves hostility because it's the only thing he knows. He purposefully riles people up and laughs off every insult he receives
He obviously held genuine respect and admiration for Dutch. He wasn't just using him or manipulating him or buttering him up for betrayal. I genuinely believe he was looking for a place of his own. He never really showed an authoritative side or desire to lead. He said it himself that he's a survivor. It wasn't ambition, it was just searching for shelter and stability. That's why he ratted - the stability was gone
He died miserable. I could go on and on about his death but the main points are - he calmly accepted getting shot, he shrugged and silently fell to his death. That was not a man who saw a future for himself
I left the most biased headcanon for the end. Not to be the "I can fix him" girl but I genuinely believe a softer side of him could've been drawn out. I believe he could've had a "ride or die" person of his own. Two survivors, watching each other's back, suspicious of others but not each other, enjoying the uncertainty and freedom of life, two loose ends but tied together

RDR2 headcanon: Micah Bell kills his brother Amos in 1907
I think the family who Micah and his gang invade the home of and murder is Amos and his family.
The crime is mentioned twice: in a 1907 newspaper, and by Cleet before John or Sadie kills him. The family includes a husband, a wife and daughters, like Amos' does, revealed through Micah's speeches, a knife game, and the letter from Amos in Shady Belle. (Shady Bells, both of them lol, being shrouded in mystery. I'll try to unveil them a little).
In the letter, Amos rejects Micah and tells him to stay far away or he'll kill him. "I have daughters, as you know". Micah must know his brother's address as this letter is a reply, but how does Micah know about his nieces? Did he visit? Did he stake out Amos' ranch, before he was spotted? (That must've been an intense moment). The letter can be found randomly as if thrown away, so it must've upset him, who is usually secretive. He is also swears he remember threats.
Is 1800s Micah capable of killing his own brother? Idk. But in the 1900s, I think he's unhinged enough to do it, especially if his O'Driscoll-like gang members join in. Amos is a failed Bell and a loose end, and he witnessed a weakness on Micah's part, in the letter.
For Micah hope is weakness, a belief that was softened and then solidified when he was in the Van der Linde Gang. I think he joined unconsciously wanting a family, consciously wanting money (the Blackwater score, Dutch's bounty, the gang funds…). Maybe Dutch let him join as as a pet project, testing his mentoring skills on a man rougher than a street kid (and if Micah can soften or settle down, so can Dutch?). Between chapter 1-4 of RDR Micah gets a sliver of hope and reaches out to Amos. But the reconciliation with the old family, the new family, and the money all go to hell. He likely ratted after Guarma, but I'm unsure if he were going to give the Pinkertons, Dutch. As a young man, Micah chose his father over Amos, like he chooses Dutch over Arthur or any other gang / family members. When Dutch rejects him, he screams in frustration. The money is seemingly not enough. I think he changes after this, going from bad to worse. And at his worst, he's probably capable of spilling his own blood. Maybe he feels like he's killing Amos on his father's behalf, like he killed "traitors" on Dutch's. (Daddy issues deluxe edition).
Micah and Amos can be read as a dark mirror to Arthur and John. Both Amos and John abandon their lawless lifestyle – and their brothers – to become lawful sheep ranchers. But where John lives on thanks to Arthur's involvement, it makes narratively sense to me that Micah's involvement does the opposite, ending his remaining family. In canon, John is also killed in the end, after a few years of lawful living. Amos might've been equally unable to escape. Especially with a brother like Micah.
Sorry if I got any details wrong. Special thanks to @zanazirafanfic and @the--end-is--nigh , who chatted about this with me months ago, offering their insights. I've been seeing a lot of cool Micah Bell and RDR theories lately, so I'd thought I'd share one of mine.

Sometimes boys from abusive homes become their fathers and alienate their brothers
I think so often about Amos Bell's petty little letter back to his brother. He should've showed up in the Epilogue and ripped Micah in half with his bare hands

Movie poster for Blood Under the Snow, the second part of The Devils series by Amras
I'll say it again- It's such a fantastic series. Here's my pitch to you: Micah and Arthur travel across America to retrieve Micah's inheritance from his brother, Amos. They have to navigate the treacherous landscape of their persons as well as the countryside. Big sexy and very evil things happen and it's so good. It's written so well and there's a moment where I had to lie down 'cus the fic was so good. I highly recommend (especially if you like Western movies with nasty fellas, tense atmospheres, and action) 😈😈
Here is a link to the speed paint video
I put some sketches + references below the cut.
Here's some thumbnails I drew physically. I tried a few layouts. Most of them featured Micah up at the top and Amos at the bottom. I wanted a really strong silhouette and a white background to represent the snow part of the title/setting.
I found the poster for The Horseman and the Samurai and took direct inspiration from it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had one idea where the silhouette would be a certain character's dead body half uncovered in the snow/ white of the background. Then I'd put the rest of the characters inside that shape. There's another concept where the silhouette would take shape of a playing card where Micah is at the top and Amos is upside down. Scrapped that idea because I wanted more of a traditional movie poster look where the main focus would be the faces of the characters. Flipping a main character upside down wold mess with the hypothetical movie goers lololol
Something I figured out while looking at references is- man, the movie title and the movie star names take up almost equal attention real estate.

hey fellas. c: micah bell and amos's relationship, am I right? it's so interesting to me. amos's letter really tries to warn us - he knows how evil micah is long before the game really shows us how evil micah is. but micah cared enough to write to his brother in 1899? so it's pretty likely they had a relationship after the death of their father, at least long enough for him to have met amos's wife and hate her. but amos's letter also implies he hasn't heard from his brother in a while, and takes the time to make it abundantly clear he wouldn't only kill micah on sight, but would actively hunt him down if he came within 50 miles of his family SPECIFICALLY to protect his children, his daughters.
y'know, almost as if he knows that micah is capable of murdering children.
makes you wonder if maybe one night, he saw micah kill a kid. maybe it was the night they stopped being brothers - when amos realized that as much as he loved micah, and tried to excuse the way his big brother was on their god-awful childhoods, micah was all that was evil and wrong with the world. swore to the lord that he would repent his brother if it meant protecting his family from him, and told micah he was done, washing his hands of him. wonder if micah thought his brother was a fool and a spineless coward for not having the resolve to get rid of all the witnesses, because he sure as shit wasn't going to hang for a robbery that only got them $10.
wonder if a christian man like amos, who already had a wife, and a daughter of his own, would've taken the time to make two wooden crosses and bury the bodies outside their secluded little home as his first act of repentance. spent the rest of his life traumatized, seeing himself as guilty for the murders of a mother and son as his brother was for not being able to stop him.

Micah's Mother (HC)
In the game, we can hear a bit about Micah’s father during some of his campfire dialogues. But what about his mother?
The following is my personal take on her story, her relationship with Micah’s father, and her sons. I'll also talk about life after her death, as I presume she was the first one to die in the family, leaving Amos and Micah alone with their father.
Appearance
Light complexion, wavy light-brown hair, straight nose and blue eyes. Of average height and malnourished, especially towards the last few years of her life.
She wasn’t the prettiest, but she had kindness in her eyes and in the way she carried herself. Never resting gaze, hands always busy doing something, anything needed doing.
Background
Her name was Joanna. She was raised religious in a poor family, and kept the faith, believing and praising her God as she was taught.
Micah Bell II was always in her life, passing trough the village with his family. Sometimes he stayed for a few months, sometimes a few weeks, and other times just a couple of days.
She always had an eye for him, and the feeling was mutual. Eventually, they got together.
He was sweet on her and they were happy, got married and had Micah soon after.
Joanna knew what kind of man Micah Bell II was, but she loved him and he loved her. She wanted him getting a proper job and being a proper man, but the only thing he was ever taught was that way of life. Joanna planned on changing that, eventually. For now, she was happily married and had a male firstborn. What else could a young religious woman ask for?
Micah Bell II was gone for weeks at the time, getting money how he knew how, coming back to them as soon as he could, often time with little money to give. A few years after Micah was born (I like to think 2 to 4 years), she got pregnant with her second child: Amos.
Death
It wasn’t an easy pregnancy. Unfortunately, she died while giving birth to Amos, a healthy baby boy. She didn’t even have the chance to hold him before she passed away, dying as soon as she heard him cry.
Life after her death
Micah Bell II was left alone raising two kids. He was never a religious man and now that the woman he loved died, he started to despise that invisible being in the sky.
The kids were to small to bring them along, and he left them with Joanna’s parents for a few years.
In those years, he started to drink a lot, taking on job after job, one more dangerous than the other. He grew hateful and violent as the days went by. The pain of his wife’s loss broke him.
When Micah was old enough, eight years old, his father started bringing him along to teach him his ways and to make a man out of him. But especially to stop his parents-in-law to indoctrinating him about God and religion. Joanna’s parents were not happy about it, but there was no stopping Micah Bell II.
When Amos was also of age, he took him, and together they started to roam the Country as the Bell family had always done.
He wasn’t kind to his kids and was downright cruel to Amos, constantly reminding him of “what he did to Joanna” and how he should have died instead of her. He went on drunken rants about God, about how unfair it was, about how there’s no such thing as a God but only winners and losers and they better remember that. Or else.
Micah remembered, even if faintly, a version of his father that was affectionate, and he held on that memory even during the beatings. He was just a child, after all.
Amos knew nothing about his father, and he didn’t want to. All he ever wanted was to go back to his loving grandparents.
As they grew older and their father grew drunker, the brothers participated in heists that frequently ended in shootouts.
Amos and Micah didn’t really get along. It wasn't that Amos didn’t love Micah, but he saw how similar he was becoming to his father. Micah cared for Amos. He was his little brother, after all, and even if Amos didn’t remember it, Micah held him and played with him when they were children in their grandparent’s house.
I believe Micah Bell II died alone, drunk, and hated by both of their kids after they finally got to live their own life, away from him and from each other.
As of that one time Micah Bell II tried to kill Amos, I will just redirect you to this beautiful fanfiction Sins of the Father by @the--end-is--nigh. Warning: read the tags and prepare yourself for a good sob.(My HC differs from hers in one way you’ll pick up on once you read the fanfiction. I will not spoil it for ya.)
