Going to start this fanfic today
At the Edge of Lasg'len by AnnEllspethRaven, SonaBeanSidhe
6.7 million words and still ongoing.
Let us see if I will like this. I got introduced to Tolkien very late and have only watched the movies, so I am not aware of the worldbuilding in the books.
How long do you think it will take me to read 6 7 million word fanfic?
Edit: I dropped the fic after chapter 8. Not my cup of tea.

Oxonmoot - Still Time to Get Virtual Registration!
I'll be at Oxonmoot (Virtually) this weekend!
I'm hosting or cohosting three different fanfiction panels!
Writing to the Word Count, which is how to keep word counts within certain parameters for fandom events/challenges and how to plot things out without panic or procrastination; it's also a helpful session for anyone who hasn't run a fandom exchange/gifting/big bang event and wants to try in the future
Make 'Em Laugh, the 'audience choice' selection for this year's poll I put out there on Tumblr several months ago. I'll explain fifteen different types of humor, read some excerpts for examples, and then there's a little workshop time to write humor and share
I <3 Fandom: Fanfiction -- A new series! I've been doing the above 'So You Want to Write Fanfiction?' sessions for a while, and this is a new, more casual series. These sessions are more roundtable discussion, with a middle part of quiet creative time, and sharing at the end. There's another in the series for Fan Art that will be hosted by @annellspethraven (but I'll be on the panel for that one, too!)
And then, what I'm considering my 'main event' this year.
I have written a 25+ page paper on the science of the silmarils. A serious consideration for how they could exist. My references are eight more pages, so you know this is some serious silmaril shit going on here. I am still surrounded by reference books and rocks, and I am very excited for this. I also have some new paper art I created for the presentation, and I touch on the light of the Two Trees and the three Elven rings as part of the presentation.
And that's just my contributions to the moot -- there are so many other panels and papers and fun things. It's by far the best hybrid convention or conference out there, and I did a lot of virtual and hybrid convention and conference going over the past five years. This one is fantastic, and it kicks off with a group watch of the second season of Rings of Power. Love it or hate it, there will be people to chat with from all around the world. (The craft challenge is star-based this year, so I'm very excited for that, too!)
So what are you doing this weekend? I'll be...probably wondering if Maglor's going to show up on my doorstep now that I have a theoretical recipe for Silmarils.

Fic Authors Self-rec meme
Thank you dear @edgeoflight for mentioning me 🙏🏼
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤
I don’t really have ‘favourite’ fics because I think of the series as one very long story, but there are fics I’ve enjoyed writing more than others. The reason isn’t because of the content; I enjoyed writing all of them but when I think back there is generally a ‘mood’ surrounding them, sometimes it can simply be how my life was at the time, or sometimes it’s more complex.
In no particular order: A Shadow Over Genesis
This is an extremely dark fic, but I enjoyed writing it because it allowed me to tell the backstory of a character who had been in the series since Magnificat III: Edenel, who was Élernil, Finwë’s twin. He was captured and taken to Utumno. Definitely not, as they used to say, for the faint of heart. Summerland
wrote this pretty much off the back of finishing reading @naryaflame’s superb The Ways of Paradox.
I was so inspired, and the title fit with that summer which was long and very warm, week after week, just idyllic English summer weather. I also (then) felt there was some hope in the treatment my mother was having. I often wrote when I was visiting her. Anyway, it was one of those times when you really feel in the ‘zone’. It was also the beginning of our multiverse.
A Far, Fierce Sky
haven’t in fact finished this, though I have written 51 chapters and it is over 250,000 words (and I do know the ending!) At the time, I was also working on Magnificat and suddenly my life became too busy to write two big series in tandem so something had to give. I was determined to finish the Dark Prince/Magnificat and had put much more work into it, so I chose that and sidelined this.
It’s the sequel to A Light in the East and so an AU or my AU’s. One of the things I tremendously enjoyed was writing Sauron and Vanimöré and their incredibly complicated relationship. Also it was mostly set in Mordor and Khand and I so much enjoyed the worldbuilding. I also loved creating OC’s from Khand. (Who’ve gone on to be written by @annellspethraven in her and Sona’s megafic At The Edge of Lasg’len)
Magnificat of the Damned Book IV: Anvil.
While this seemed to be the most difficult fic to write, it was really because it was building toward Dagor Dagorath and an ending of the Magnificat series — not a complete slam-the-door ending but since I knew what would happen I almost didn’t want to finish it. Yet I did enjoy it; it sewed other seeds (It was the first time I had written Eru as a character rather than an idea). Some things were revealed that had their roots in far earlier stories and the comments I received for the last chapter were such a relief as I’d not been sure I could pull something that huge off. I wrote it anyway.
Last Night I Dreamt I Went to Summerland Again
Oddly enough I began this in a spirit of defiance and it encompassed my mother’s death and my walking away from a toxic online acquaintanceship. Writing this helped with both the grief of the first and the fury of the latter.
In fact all the Stormbringers Trilogy, of which this is the first fic, were enormously helpful to my mental health at the time,
I was allowed to borrow some of Narya’s wonderful OC’s, and use some of my own, as it is modern-day multiverse (an AU of our main Summerland series) Far Right thugs getting satisfactorily killed, an avatar of Eru, Eru himself in the modern world as well as Sauron and Maglor, a haunted house, hitmen, MI6, other realities. I really enjoyed writing it :)
Well, I don’t know who’s done this as I’ve seen this going around for a while, so I’ll tag @naryaflame, @pinksiamese, @nuredhel @noldorin-smith @jane-ways @lucifers-cuvette @awesome-bluehair-universe @swanfloatieknight @nocompromise-noregrets @gellalaer, @cuarthol, @antares0606 @auntieaugury @sedailanderekaden @minquelie @thisshadowprevails @thescrapwitch
That’s more than five I’m sorry. No pressure, and if anyone sees this who hasn’t done it, please feel free :)

Oh wow, thank you so much @feanors-mom 🥹 That’s incredibly kind. 😭 I have some reccs too (Specifically fics with OC’s as main characters). The incredible @naryaflame’s OC’s in The Ways of Paradox. This is a Maglor in the modern world and people have visited St. Andrews in Scotland after reading this, which says it all. Simply amazing,
Also for many OC’s, Elves, peredhel and Mortals and also the largest Tolkien fanfic ever written. (Vanímórë is in there too, many, many chapters in, Vanya and the Khadakhir, too. @annellspethraven would know).
And going back to the Silmarillion and the Second Age Anything by Pandemonium_213 to be honest. Brilliant Sauron, just incredible, but also fantastic OC’s that simply are ‘there’ they might always have been there. (Pandë is @lucifers-cuvette here on Tumblr).
And I can never not recc A Dawn of Many Colors. @pinksiamese is just an astonishing writer.
These three authors are outstanding in their writing full top. Their OC’s are so absorbing that I could read a whole story based around them without any canon characters making an appearance at all. I inhale their stories.
original character-focussed fic recs
One of the best feelings for me as a fic writer in this fandom is when somebody tells me that they liked one of my original characters. Character creation can be hard work and nerve-wracking, so it’s really rewarding whenever people tell me that it’s paid off. This fandom has a wealth of fantastic, memorable original characters, so I wanted to make a recommendation list of some of my favourite fics that feature them. The fics in this list are a range of lengths, ratings, warnings, and themes, and I’m hoping everyone will be able to find something to their taste here.
Of course this list is not exhaustive, and I’m always open to more recommendations!

So Feanor is to remain in the Halls of Mandos till the unmaking of Arda... but let’s believe in redemption and imagine him re-embodied a wiser, humbler Noldo and asking his wife for forgiveness. Requested by AnnEllspethRaven and SonaBeanSidhe for their fic on AO3 :)

Attention, Tolkien fan artists!
During the 2022 Oxonmoot, AnnEllspethRaven and Zhie will be presenting a hybrid (online and broadcast live to the convention) panel called "A Community of Art, From A to Z", featuring works of fan art depicting or inspired by scenes and characters from Tolkien's works, discussed with an artistic eye. The purpose of this panel is both to bring forth awareness of the diversity of works in the fandom through a positive lens. The following is the official write-up for the panel:
AnnEllspethRaven and Zhie wish to show images of a wide range of Tolkien art and fanart to illustrate the diversity of themes and styles utilized by assorted artists who have taken the time and effort to bring Tolkien's texts to life. Each work will be discussed and honored for its contributions and its technical achievements by two persons who hold university degrees in the humanities and who have a deep love of art as a subject, understanding also the emotional experience inherent in being content creators.
If you would like your work to be considered for featuring in the discussions, the form for artists who would like to self-recommend works is linked here.

Lord Námo in His Halls
My first piece for Scribbles and Drabbles 2022. Inspired by AnnEllspethRaven’s work

A glaring red lily sprouts out of his palm and sways above it, like there truly is wind in this endless and limitless space around him. He can do wind, of course. With a small motion of his fingers or as small a breath, his brothers and sisters forgot he could draw too long ago.
They forgot many things.
The lily twists and changes colour, and covers with feathers, which have no weight, just like their tiny, insignificant owner.
The bird settles cozily in his palm, hardly caring how ephemerous its present perch is.
He can still smile.
A soul drifts by, its desperate eyes seeking something it isn’t allowed to find yet. It has all time of the world, and still not a moment to appreciate a piece of life, sharpening its beak against the skin of the most intimidating and the least dangerous creature in the Halls.
His fingers meet, but not before the bird swells up into a ball of light, sharp and blinding. He feels the warmth, even as he lets go of this new creation of his and the freshly born star soars up to add itself to the medley of its predecessors – hundreds of them by now.
Kindling stars is not as troublesome a task. But, by Eru, it’s inspiring.
He can do it.
All it takes is to remind himself of it more often.
@animatorweirdo I thought you might be interested

Nature Abhors a Void
I created a Tumblr. Then deleted a Tumblr. Here we are again, obviously...so many of you cannot be found without a Tumblr. This is like an unknown and potentially venomous creature. I shall approach slowly and poke it with a stick, fleeing as soon as possible to the safe places called AO3, Discord, DeviantArt, Instagram, and even the swamp of Twitter. I'm That Special Child, co-author of That Special Fanfic. Dedicated encourager of the crafts of writing and art in general, I may come around begging you for your lovely art creations come Oxonmoot time or...who even knows what; I'm quirky and my eyes will light up at the word Thindren just as much as Shizun! If you know, you do not have to ask. But if you really need me, find me on Discord Narvaeril/AnnEllspethRaven#7864 because write write write I'm not on social media to the extent possible. Have a lovely lovely day, Daeron once of Doriath wishes it to be so.

Jackbox: Middle-earth Edition @ Oxonmoot Online
I am all set for hosting the Jackbox game night in the wee hours of day one of Oxonmoot. Custom editions of Quiplash and Drawful Animate - and, have to toss Tee KO in there, as it was a favorite during last B2MEM.
Only 14 hours until the online fantasticness starts and registration is still open for those who were still trying to decide... https://www.tolkiensociety.org/events/oxonmoot-2023/oxonmoot-2023-online-bookings/
I'm especially looking forward to watching the reduced Silmarillion play and the craft challenges. And there's a panel on online Tolkien fandom spaces @annellspethraven and @silwe are cohosting that I'm excited about.
Plus just all of the interaction funsies in an online international space, like the dead orc party and the meet-ups.
Goodbye, normal sleep schedule.
#oxonmoot#jackbox games#i am very proud of some of these prompts and I'm a horrible person for being proud of them but i'm not sorry

Three Favourite Fics of the Moment
Thank you for taking me @cuarthol
@naryaflame’s The Way Through the Dark. Narya’s work is so superb. You live it, feel it and are completely there. I adore The Ways of Paradox and am thrilled to revisit St. Andrews and the St. Andrews Quartet who I love to bits.
@elfscribe’s Númenor series is absolutely brilliant and I have been a fan of Book 1 for many years. This is part two, Elegy for Númenor: The Darkening, and just as wonderful as the first!
@annellspethraven and Sona Bean Sidhe. This is the longest Tolkien fanfic in existence and is ongoing. A huge cast of both canon and OC characters — in fact all the above have OC’s in the spotlight and they are all excellent. (I don’t and never have read fanfic simply for the canon characters, no matter how much I might like them. I simply want to read a well-told story. I’m more of a bookworm than a fan, really).
tagging anyone who’s not been tagged!

Fun fact! There are longer ones. Which are ALSO fanfiction. I give you this, 5.6 MILLION words, still updating regularly:
But that's not it, either - the true award, for all my digging can tell, seems to go to this monster of a fic, updated the same day I'm posting this:
https://m.fanfiction.net/s/12715870/1/The-Loud-House-Revamped
This fic lands at about fourteen million words! Even higher than the fic I was looking to put here, which clocked in at just over nine million.
I don't know how the hell these people managed to make things this huge, but it's crazy impressive (and a little scary) nonetheless.
why does oscar wilde take 150 pages to write something he could literally say in a paragraph
