Italy commemorates the 40th anniversary of the death of anti-mafia Prefect Dalla Chiesa, assassinated by the Sicilian mafia

2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of anti-mafia Prefect General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, brutally killed alongside his wife and an agent of his security detail on September 3rd, 1982.

General Dalla Chiesa had been made Prefect of Palermo, Sicily, tasked with combating the violence of the Second Mafia War. 100 days from his appointment, he had not yet received any of the promised resources or powers he had requested in order to operate effectively.

Around 9pm, he was traveling by car with his wife and an escort agent when another car and men on motorcycles suddenly swerved by them, forcing them off the road and against a tree, then fired several rounds of Kalashnikov, killing them instantly. It became known as the Via Carina Massacre, and Mafia boss Salvatore Riina is widely recognized as the instigator.

The bodies were left on the side of the road for hours before news reached the authorities. In the span of those hours, the safe in the Prefect's office was raided and several highly sensitive classified documents were stolen, a huge setback to Italy's anti-mafia efforts for years to come.
