Today we had the honor of interviewing Richard Hamilton - a 100 year old #WorldWarII veteran and former POW - for American Veterans Center. We sat down for a 3 hour conversation and his stories were absolutely riveting.
He was a radio operator aboard a B-17 bomber. He flew 8 successful missions over Europe. On his 9th mission, his plane was hit by enemy fighter planes, causing a massive fire in the bomb cargo hold. At that moment, he knew he only had seconds to get out of the plane before the bombs exploded. He jumped out, into a free fall for what felt like minutes before releasing his parachute - afraid that if he did it too soon he’d be a target for machine gun fire.
Landing in the heart of Nazi Germany, Richard became a prisoner of war for 10 months. Towards the end, he was forced to march on foot in harsh winter conditions, sometimes up to 20 miles per day. Finally, he was liberated by the Soviets and flown to a hospital in France where he recovered from jaundice and malnutrition.
At last, he returned home and embraced his sweetheart, and they married a month later.
Truly an honor to get this story on film so it will never be forgotten. There are not many #WorldWar2 vets left. We think of #WWII as ancient history but talking to a man who remembers it like it was yesterday, you realize how recent these monumental events that shaped the world really were. May is #MilitaryAppreciationMonth. Remember the history. Honor their sacrifice. #militaryappreciation #ArmyStrong #armyaircorps #airforce

"Scratch Two German Landing Boats" Eighty Years Ago Today - (Thursday) January 28th, 1943 - Sfax, Tunisia: The U-Boats aren't active today, but the US Army Air Forces are. As the noose is tightening on the Afrika Korps and their Italian Allies in North Africa, they are getting forced tighter and tighter into the coast of Tunisia. Allied land troops and tanks are closing in - as is their air cover. In an attack today, American planes sink Marinefährprahm F359 "landing barge" (similar craft, Photo 1) and the landing ferry "SF 36 Goldbutt" (similar craft, Photo 2). Casualties unspecified. No filters needed for this kind of craftsmanship, many thanks to Dan for doing this at short notice. @dragonsupplies 🙏 thank you it will mean so much to the gentlemen that owns these to see them with a new lease of life as its the only memories he has unfortunately with dementia. Please make every veteran in this country feel valued and wanted they are the best thing any generation has. Cherish that especially near remembrance parades. Now on to sorting my No.2 Dress ready to give him them tomorrow before 11am. 💂 #medalmounting #royalnavy #britisharmy #worldwar2 #veteran #ubique #operationwelfare #africacampaignww2 @royalnavy @britisharmy @royal_engineers_cet @armyaircorps @corps_of_royal_engineers @lakota_outdoors @its_going_to_get_hairy @royalbritishlegion @rblicharity @thermcharity @soldierscharity @ssafa_armedforcescharity https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck3d5EVDh_3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On this Veterans Day, NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is proud to remember the service and sacrifice of Alabama's Tuskegee Airmen of World War II – the first African American fighter pilots for the U.S. Army Air Corps. Some of the pilots trained over the Great Lakes region and six Tuskegee Airmen and their aircraft were lost in Michigan waters, including five in Lake Huron.

On August 28, 2021, a memorial was dedicated in the International Flag Plaza in Port Huron, Michigan, to the memory of the pilots who perished in accidents during their training in Port Huron. The memorial was made possible through private and corporate donors, Diving With a Purpose, the City of Port Huron, and the State of Alabama. On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops. #lestweforget #dday #normandy #rangers #rltw #omahabeach #wwii #wwiihistory #army #airforce #navy #armyaircorps #fubar (at Omaha Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBGmspoAbeU/?igshid=no2jawdwxoji

At the dawn of the space age, test pilot “jocks” who flew high-speed experimental rocket planes and the Mercury 7 astronauts who rode the Redstone & Atlas rockets needed a timepiece that befitted their ventures into a brave new world. Enter America’s first microsonic wristwatch, the Bulova Accutron introduced in October 1960. The Accutron 214 movement appeared a full decade before the first commercial quartz watch by Seiko of Japan. Bulova’s press advertising was quick to capitalise on the Accutron Astronaut’s space age connotations as the little GMT tuning fork pilot watch became a favorite with and adopted by military testpilots and civilian CIA pilots. 1964 M4 Accutron Astronaut wristwatch by a 1/18th desktop  Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. Mounted 👌 quick turn around for a self mounting service from @spiremedals ebay shop. Emailed and asked for a QPJM single court mount, finally arrived and all I had to do was sew the medal to the board and its complete 👍 amazing quality and the hassle free factor of not posting medals or losing them in post was removed, all ready for remembrance parades coming soon. Even if I'm in uniform or not I'll wear mine proudly, like always if I'm in uniform I wear my Granddads mini under my jacket as self pride 🤫 don't tell the RSM, and if I'm in my 3 piece suit I wear my corps tie, beret, and his full size medals on the right as a mark of family respect and I always carry a corps coin in my pocket ❤ #rememberanceday #ubique #jublieemedal #poppyappeal #qpjm @royalbritishlegion @britisharmy @spiremedals @corps_of_royal_engineers @armyaircorps https://www.instagram.com/p/CkWuAcHj_ob/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
