"For 540 million years, the ebb and flow in the strength of Earth's magnetic field has correlated with fluctuations in atmospheric oxygen, according to a newly released analysis by NASA scientists. The research suggests that processes deep inside the Earth might influence habitability on the planet’s surface.
Earth’s magnetic field arises from the flow of material in the planet’s molten interior, which acts like a giant electromagnet. The flow isn’t perfectly stable, and this causes the field to change over time.
Many scientists have argued that the magnetic field is crucial for protecting the atmosphere from eroded by energetic particles coming from the Sun. But, the authors of the study in Science Advances point out, the role of magnetic fields in preserving the atmosphere is an area of active research. Before addressing the complexity of the cause-and-effect relationship between magnetic fields and oxygen levels, the study authors decided to see whether Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere have fluctuated in ways that demonstrate a link."
"(...) they found that the planetary magnetic field has followed similar rising and falling patterns as oxygen in the atmosphere for nearly a half billion years, dating back to the Cambrian explosion, when complex life on Earth emerged.
“This correlation raises the possibility that both the magnetic field strength and the atmospheric oxygen level are responding to a single underlying process, such as the movement of Earth’s continents,” (...)."

Honestly it really riles me up that people are mean to ocean animals because they are less understood than land animals (yes even dolphins as publically liked as they are) I think everyone should put a little more effort into understanding the ocean and the animals in it and the processes they help. You dont have to like the ocean you just need to understand it and understand that its 3/4ths of our planet's surface and that it's indispensable for life because the second that people stop caring about whats in it and what it does the door opens up for people to not care about what happens to it and how big companies destroy it and continue their needless pollution due to lack of care from the general public

My lameass Pikmin theory is that there's nothing evil or sinister going on with PNF-404 - it's just that none of the ships are built for the atmosphere and that's about it.

thinking about the space suits. and how i will sooner keel over dead than draw consistently. anyway wouldn’t it be funny if olimar’s suit looked like this
handwriting translations:
HOCOTATE FREIGHT SUIT (with a pinch of salt)
oxygen seeps through :(
nobody knows what these buttons do…
tiny kit
cram those gloves on!!
padding/insulation worn thin
often shifts down
accordian. flexible but plasticky/squeaky
no support for feet

another funny thing about Louie- though this could probably just be considered a funny thing about Pikmin 2 in general- is like. it's Louie's second ever mission (according to the intro), and he gets abandoned on The Hell Planet, where Olimar just crashed MAYBE like a month ago and had to fight for his life. and left to his own devices, Louie decides to go "fuck it. i can work with this", and tries to cook and eat every single living thing he comes across. AND he succeeds with most of them, too. man was thriving on this oxygenated hellhole. kind of iconic honestly

they got so so lucky in scavengers reign. like, vesta was just an incredibly human friendly planet in a way that most planets are not. honestly they might as well have landed in a jungle on earth. i mean, i'm glad they didn't because it was super pretty, but still

I like how when people travel they tell me about trees. “There were these super cool trees and all I could think was ‘oh you’d love to see these.’” 🖤🖤🖤
#I LOVE trees#opposite of this is someone telling me I’d hate Maine (?) because they’re too many trees#I want to see the proper redwoods someday#but also that requires going to California#but I want to see the sequoias#I’ve seen coast redwoods (really stunning btw)#stood inside one. never felt such a soul shaking experience#half ‘this is wrong’ half ‘this is what it means to be human.’#did you know trees communicate with eachother?#that the worlds largest tree is in Utah and it’s called Pando#Pando’s a giant aspen clone#:)#you know when you’re somewhere and you can just smell all the trees around#it’s like filling yourself with clarity#we weren’t meant to be so separated from nature#I’ll visit other small cities with less tree cover and it just. feels so static#trees <3333#Russian olives are an invasive species that tear down cottonwoods#the Bradford pear is nightmarish#the American chestnut isn’t wholly gone! chestnut blight didn’t kill it off entirely#it is just functionally extinct#salix herbacea is the smallest tree in the world#there was a time with no trees on earth! instead we had fungal sorta pillars#as we slowly developed a more oxygen rich atmosphere plants started growing!#not exactly a tree but ferns reproduce via spores! if it doesn’t reproduce with spores it’s not actually a fern#tropical forests can be coniferous!!!#petrified wood is really cool!!!#a lot of trees don’t really have a more recent common ancestor#instead splitting off on their own. though I’m nigh certain there’s a few big gaps in the tree fossil record#trees grow from the top and not the bottom! angio’s have fruits while gymno don’t! (juniper berries are actually cones ergo its a gymno) r
