A short story based on a thought i has during class today:

Sitting curled up with my tiny lover in the early autumns sun was one of my favorite ways to spend the day. There's no chill in the air yet, but the fallen leaves create an aray of oranges and red that cascade over the backyard, some still falling from the branches, joining the piles on the ground. Clover, the love of my life who stood at a mere four inches tall, was sat on my hand, curled gently against my chest to provide her with some extra warmth her small body couldn't quite produce. Despite the beautiful display of colors that surrounded us, I couldn't keep my eyes off her. The way her dark hair cascaded down her back and chest, how her knees were pulled to her chin. Her bright blue eyes fixed to the trees as she watches the leaves fall, no doubt looking for patterns In the ones on the ground. The warm autumn colors contrast her pale, cool toned skin in a way you only see in paintings. As if she was the first snow flake to fall in the winter, before the orange, red, and yellow color pallete the earth had taken on turned to a monochromatic while. She stood out amongst our surroundings, like how she stood out against every person I've met, despite her whole life having being spent trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible. After thinking for a moment, i gently lift my hand to bring her to eye level, her gaze turns from the landscape infrong of us and focuses on me. Instead.

"Need something?" She asks, her head tilting to one side, causing her hair to fall in that direction. She reminded me of a curious mouse in the moment, attempting to gage what my intentions were just from my expressions. "No, just looking." I say, a hint of a teasing smile on my face. Her eye brows furrow and she shakes her head. But I don't miss the hint of red on her cheeks. "I'd- i would say something cheeky back, but it's to cold to think." She mutters, earning a small chuckle from me. Cold? How could she be? It's ten degrees out, that's hardly cold.

Though, i do suppose at her size she must be freezing, even on a relatively warm day. Gently, I set her on the ground, making sure her balance is right before moving my hand away to grab a leaf to place over her. Birds tend to be an issue at her size, so i make sure to hide her from any over head pests. "What are you doing?" She asks, holding the leaf up so she can meet my eyes. I smile and start to stand up, scuffing my foot into the ground to mark where I was sitting so I don't lose her. "Just wait here, I'll be right back." I don't wait for her reply before turning on my heel and heading inside. Reminding myself she can handle being outside by herself for a moment.

A few minutes later, I returned to where I scuffed the ground and brushed my hands over the ground till my hand bumped into her. Wordlessly, I curl my fingers around her torso and lift her. "What are you doing?" She asks again. And my smile broadened before I showed her the scarf I had grabbed from inside. Not her scarf, but mine. Clover deadpans in my palm and rolls her eyes. "Hah hah, very funny, im tiny, that won't fit me, asshole." She says, but there's no real bite to her words. "No," i say, my voice taking on a teasing tone, "but it'll fit me." I begin to wrap the scarf around my neck. "Oh c'mon- you're not even cold! Go get my scar-" She cuts herself off when I settle her into the folds off my scarf, right up against my neck. I feel her body go from tense to relax in an instant. And she hums in contentment. "Never mind, I like this scarf." She murmurs as her gaze returns to watch the leaves fall. I let myself watch the leaves, but think about how now I might be able to get to come watch the snow fall, while she stays safe and warm, right here with me.
