Here are few ideas for people who want to scratch weird fiction bureaucratic itch during the TMAGP break:
- watch X-files - the classic of weird/science fiction TV-shows
- read "Teatro Grottesco" by Thomas Ligotti - urban decay with some government critique sprinkled in, as anthology the stories vary, but some of them definitely hit the same notes
- read "Southern Reach" Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, especially prelevant once you get to "Authority"
- you can also watch the movie "Annihilation" which is adaptation of the first book in "Southern Reach" Trilogy, although this one is more in the vein of "what is Starkwell up to during the events of TMAGP"
- play the game "Control" - directly inspired by "Souther Reach" AND directly inspired TMAGP as per Jonathan Sims
- play any of the Project Moon games - all of them are basically bureaucratic weird fiction and have very unique gameplay mechanics
- get into SCP Foundation - do not get discouraged by the mountain of content, read what you like, because nothing is canon and everything is relevant if you're brave enough
- try to apply for some type of government project - expirence first hand the horrors of repeating corridors, confusing mountains of boring papers and hostile office ladies making you think you even breathe the wrong way

Q&A with Thomas M. Kitts
The author of Keep On Believin': The Life and Music of Richie Furay discusses Furay's place in rock music, how religion impacted his career, and more.
Tumblr media
What makes Richie Furay a significant figure in rock music?
Furay is perhaps the foremost pioneer of country-rock. His vision to fuse the two genres started to take shape in Buffalo Springfield with “A Child’s Claim to Fame” off the band’s second album Buffalo Springfield Again (1967) and “Kind Woman” off the band’s final album Last Time Around (1968). As soon as Buffalo Springfield ended, Furay, along with Jim Messina, formed Poco, initially called Pogo, with the intention of fusing rock music with country. Poco featured a pedal steel guitar player in their lineup, one of the first rock bands, along with the Flying Burrito Brothers, to do so. At one point before they began recording, Poco and the Burritos, who featured Richie’s friend Gram Parsons, considered merging, but they decided the personnel decisions would have been too complex. You can hear Furay’s influence in artists like Pure Prairie League, Vince Gill, George Strait, Uncle Tupelo, and in much of the music today labeled as alt-country and outlaw country. From the stage, at one Eagles show in Denver, Glenn Frey saluted Furay, who was in the audience: “If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t be here.”
Did Furay's conversion to Christianity impact his career?
It is debatable and unmeasurable. Wayne Robins, editor of Creem from 1971–1975, did not think Furay’s Christianity hurt his career. “I don’t think anyone really cared about his religious convictions,” said Robins. “Everyone seemed to be a spiritual seeker of some sort.” But Peter Knobler, editor of Crawdaddy from 1972–1979, disagreed. “I think record companies didn’t know what to do with him.” Richie agrees with Knobler and believes his solo records after his conversion were not adequately promoted. In fact, David Geffen, who was a Furay fan and who signed Richie, told him, “You’re not going to give me any of that Jesus music, are you?” The resulting album featured veiled references to Christianity, but never used the words “Christ” or “Jesus” in the lyrics. I think Furay’s Christianity hurt his career. For a rock artist, especially in the early 1970s, it was important to be “hip” or “cool.” Even though there was a large Jesus movement among young people at the time, Christianity was not perceived as “cool” or “exotic” in the same way as other spiritual movements. Even though Furay recorded some wonderful songs on his solo albums from 1976 until 1982, they received little promotion and, consequently, little airplay. Songs like “Look at the Sun,” “I Still Have Dreams,” “Yellow Moon Rising,” and others deserved more attention and still do.
Why has Furay not reached the same level of fame as some of his bandmates?
Furay has certainly worked with some famous bandmates: Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Jim Messina of Loggins and Messina, Randy Meisner of the Eagles, J. D. Souther, Chris Hillman, and Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles. What Richie and Poco needed in the late 1960s or 1970s was a hit single or a signature FM song. It would have changed his career trajectory. It would have brought attention to him and the album that featured the song—then listeners would have explored his back catalogue, which is very strong. Hit singles or, at that time, signature FM songs had a snowball effect. Besides gaining the artist larger record sales and larger concert audiences, the record company would invest more money into the artist’s next tour and album. A hit song changed an artist’s life and career. Furay and Poco had several candidates for hits: “A Good Feelin’ to Know,” “Let’s Dance,” “Just for Me and You,” and the song that gives this book its title, “Keep on Believin’.” But hit singles or signature songs are not easily manufactured and their success is unpredictable, arbitrary.

Book Review: The Southern Reach Trilogy
Book Review: The Southern Reach Trilogy
I came to discover Jeff Vandermeer due to his steampunk writings. So when I saw that a book of his was being turned into a movie I was instantly intrigued. I didn’t have time to read it however before seeing its big screen adaptation, but the movie hooked me so much that I left the theatre and went and bought Annihilation.
To be clear, this is a cerebral sort of horror series. It won’t be for…

Hotel Room (Rick Flag x F!Reader)
Main Master List || DC Master List
Tumblr media
Warnings: SMUT 18+ MINORS DNI, sex, hotel room sex, sir/colonel kink, wall sex, clothed sex, language, oral sex (female receiving), orgasm denial, impregnation, creampie,
Author’s Note: I wanted to do a full length fic of just Rick and reader having sexy times
As soon as the door opens to the room, Rick eagerly pushes you through, his hands roaming over your body in a frenzy as his lips greedily lap at your neck.
“I need you, darlin’. Been needin’ you all night,” his souther voice is deeper than normal as you claw at his chest, pushing his clothes off of him.
“You have me, baby,” you pull his face toward you and clash your lips against his, your tongue poking out and swiping over his bottom lip, wordlessly asking for entrance. Granting you entrance, Rick grasps onto your hips and pulls you flush against him, your lower stomach pressing right against his hard length.
“You make me crazy, you know that?” He comments through the kiss as you kick of your shoes while he does the same. “Don’t even wanna get you undressed. Need you now,” he groans as you reach down to his zipper and unzip his pants, reaching in and through his briefs, and pulling out his leaking member. Rick’s hips slightly falter as you languidly pump him, subconsciously backing yourself up against the wall.
“Take off my panties, Colonel,” you command as he shoves your dress up and past your thighs, yanking the flimsy underwear off of you and leaving your bare pussy open to the air. Hitching a leg on his hip, you draw him in gently as you continue to pump him, guiding him into your entrance. His hands come down to the back of your thighs as he wordlessly asks you to jump.
Wrapping your legs all the way around his waist, you gasp as you feel the blunt head of his cock prodding your entrance. “Are you ready?” Rick asks, slightly out of breath as you nod. Hoisting you up for a second, Rick takes the opportunity to line himself with your entrance before sinking you down on him, the two of you moaning in unison at the feeling. “Fuck, you’re so tight,” his head falls to your shoulder as you gently rotate your hips, getting used to his girth despite having had sex with him before.
“Only for you, Colonel,” you moan as you wrap your arms around his neck, using the leverage of his broad shoulders to hoist you up and sink back down on him. “I want you to fuck me,” he bites as your exposed skin as his hips snap up into you, the head of his cock brushing against your cervix. “Fuck, baby, you’re so big.”
Rick shudders at your words, always resulting to puddy at your praises. On the rare day where you fuck him, Rick cums quicker than he normally does.
“How does it feel, angel? Does it feel good? Does my dick feel good in you?” You nod, your eyes closed in bliss but a sharp slap to your ass causes you to yelp and open your eyes, only for a pair of brown eyes to be starring at you. “Asked you a question.”
“Yes sir. You feel so good, sir. Fill me up nice and full,” Rick presses your back completely flat against the wall as he drills his hips into yours, his lips leaving love marks against your neck as your head thumps back against the wall with each thrust, strangled moans bouncing off the walls.
“That’s it baby girl, make those pretty little noises for me. Make those noises for your Colonel,” his hips slowly drag out before pushing back in, savoring the way your walls flutter around him. “Is my baby girl gonna cum?”
You rock your hips against his, allowing your fingers to trail down your front and to your clit, rubbing small but quick circles against the bundle of nerves as you chase your orgasm.
“Yes sir, gonna cum, gonna cum,” the knot finally breaks and you release a throaty moan, your eyes fall back into your head as you coat his shaft with your juices. Rick continues to thrust into you despite his own release quickly building. Pulling out of you, he kisses your lips as you whimper at the loss of his dick. Rick chuckles.
“Don’t worry sweetheart, I ain’t done with you. Just gotta cool down for a sec,” he replies, guiding you to the bed and gently pushing you down against the mattress.
“Why’s that Colonel? My pussy too good for you?” He growls, spreading your legs and nipping at the skin on your inner thigh, blowing his breath on your exposed sex.
“Your pussy is downright sinful,” he nudges your pubic bone with his nose and groans, inhaling your scent. “Smell so good. Wonder if you taste good too.” He hitches your legs up over his shoulders as he lays his tongue flat against your folds, taking his time tasting you. “You taste even better,” he mumbles against your heat as you prop yourself up on your forearms and look down at your husband between your thighs.
“How many times have you eaten me out by now, Rick?” He hums against you and you can feel the smirk playing against your labia as his tongue traces against you before finding your clit and lapping at it, causing you to mewl.
“Just let me have this moment, won’t you? My dear wife?” He asks, looking up from between your thighs. You move a hand to play with his hair as he kisses the inside of your thigh.
“I suppose, baby. Only because you’ve been treating me so good tonight,” you reply as he blushes, rutting himself against the comforter.
“You deserve it. Been such a good mom for our little one. You deserve a night out.” His mouth immediately returns to your clit as he eagerly sucks on it, adding two digits into you and scissoring them, stretching your walls as your back arches off the bed.
“Fuck, Ricky,” you whimper, squirming underneath his arm as his fingers continue to work you. Taking charge, you begin to rock your hips against his face as he plays along, letting you use him to get off. “I’m close. I’m so close,” he grunts against you, pulling away and dragging your hips up to his.
“I wanna finish in you, sweetheart.” You giggle as he slips in, setting a quick rhythm.
“Trying for baby number 2 tonight, Colonel?” His fingernails dig into your hips as your words are shut up with moans from him deeply penetrating you.
“Only if you’ll let me, darlin’. Can’t wait to see you swelling with my child. Bringing my baby into the world,” your fingers strum your clit as Rick’s hips falter.
“Shit, I’m so close baby. So close,” you whine as Rick kisses the top of your exposed chest, trying his hardest to make sure you cum first.
“Cum for me baby girl. Cum around daddy’s cock,” a final thrust hits your g spot just right and it sends you toppling over the edge. You cum with a loud shout of his name, clinging onto him desperately and rocking your hips against his as Rick topples over you, coming with a low grunt and praises as he spills his seed deep inside of you.
After laying there for a moment, Rick gently pulls out, not minding that his clothes are thoroughly ruined with both of your climaxes as he gets a wet towel and cleans you up. Tucking himself back in, he climbs into bed and pulls you into his arms, kissing the top of your head.
“Are we really wanting to try for kiddo number two?” He asks as you snuggle into his side, taking comfort in the way his arms wrap protectively around you.
“Mmhmm, I want a mini me running around. Hopefully this time it’ll be a girl.” Rick chuckles in amusement.
“I think a girl would be amazing, as long as she comes from you.”

“OutKast’s moniker embraces their (initial) displacement in hip-hop & is an acronym for Operating Under The Krooked American System Too Long Their embodiment as outcasts can be read on multiple levels, including outcasts of hip-hop’s dominant northeastern aesthetics & outcasts as less-than-respectable young black men in the post-civil rights South. Although southern hip-hop existed before OutKast, they are the founding theoreticians of the hip-hop South. Their lyrical whimsicality & sonic & cultural experimentation with their southerness situaties them as the epicenter of recognizing a collective - tho not monolithic - contemporary southern black cultural landscape. OutKast’s recognition of not only their marginalization but also their refusal to acknowledge that the South does move on after 1968 is significant in using their musical catalog as a blueprint for updating y the hip-hop South is introspective & reflective of how young blacks exist at the sharp intersections of expected performance, idealistic longing, & jarring realities of the contemporary American South.” 🖊️@redclayscholar 🧠 Aware. OutKast brought an awareness to southern hip-hop that previous acts did not have. And that awareness reached a lot of southerners on a personal level, particularly before they became mainstream-famous. Me and my friends still hang out and kick it to tracks like “Myintrotoletuknow” and “Git Up, Git Out”. This book is so good that I am still quoting the introduction. Hope you grab a copy & check out the author interview at the #LinkInBio. Word on twitter is she bringing Zora to the hip-hop conversation. And, that is exciting. It feels juuust right. #ChroniclingStankonia #OutKast #HerstunReads #LetsGrow #BlackAndSouthern Images courtesy of @outkast IG page which is 🔥. Review of “His Dark Materials” and “The Amber Spyglass” by Phillip Pullman
Well... With long reads like this, if they are any good, you get taken on a pretty long ride as you make it through all three installments... So I have a review... Mostly of the last book... Spoiler alert if you plan on reading... But if you have already read them, please share your thoughts! =)
The series was absolutely terrific as a whole. The ideas, questions and imagery Pullman proposes are exciting, beautiful and at times frighteningly thought provoking. The trilogy focuses on two main characters: the near adolescent Lyra and Will, but their journey and challenge is one of universal (or multiversal) intrigue. Pullman is clearly science minded and mentions particle physics almost as much as theology while we discover a plan to overthrow the perils of organized religion, and even "God" himself for the apparent human rights violations they have imposed throughout the ages; namely denying people their most innate human desires (sex, curious thought and other sinful behavior). I am an adult and consider myself agnostic, but I was raised Methodist and Souther Baptist. Even now those thoughts are somewhat trepidatious and yet completely captivating.
And yet in the final installment, when all of these incredible ideas have been proposed, things fall a bit short.
The final battle we had been preparing for through the first two volumes was nearly absent. Pullman briefly explains the monumental war in a few pages, and Metatron and the Authority go down as quickly. All the build up of "immense forges" for new machinery and "intention crafts" barely get a chance to land on the pages before the story moves toward its ending. Furthermore, "the one thing the fallen angels didn't have in the old battle and why they lost the first time" was the knife "The God Killer". Yet, the knife was never used physically in the final battle at all. Why was it even called that? We could say because of its ability to cut into different worlds, it could indirectly be "The God Killer" but that is stretching what feels seamless at other times.
In "The Amber Spyglass" the excitement of the ideas Pullman first proposed never got to reach an end that was even close to the original thrill of the promise of possibilities. We were only shown brief glimpses of the wonder we were so hoping for and that Pullman had fed us so fully in the first installments. Witnessing the Authority in his final state was provocative and thrilling but nothing was offered to satisfy the appetite that remained after the initial description. We didn't learn very much else about the multiverse or the state of this story's reality as it felt we had been promised over and over. We got right up to the moment and then never really got the Authority's perspective (or Metatron's) other than the second hand information we previously had from members of Asriel's army. And finally, although incredibly adventurous and exhilarating as a whole series, nothing really changed in the world after these momentous events took place. When we were excited by Asriel saying he would make death die, he nor Lyra really put an end to death at all, they just made it final and real. Now Dust would stop flowing out of the worlds but we aren't really sure if the Dust leak or the oppression of the Authority was the real problem to begin with. Even if we say they were both the problem, the world is essentially returned back to the way it was with minimal changes to the old system that could have more simply come about by a real world social movement. The ride of this tale warranted more. The story does finish with some heartfelt, wonderfully emotional moments of being torn by personal desires and the reality of what has to be, and offers hope and positive possibilities in the days to come, but the incredible wonder, frightful thrill, and moments of fundamentally challenging the paradigm of human belief systems in the first two installments has been substituted somewhat for a focus on classic human emotion; done very well, but done very well many times before. It was the former coupled with the latter that really made Pullman's writing shine. Still, two big thumbs up for the trilogy =)

President Nieto Offers Mexican Work Permits to Migrants in Caravan - LATIN AMERICA
New Post has been published on https://citizentruth.org/president-nieto-offers-mexican-work-permits-to-migrants-in-caravan/
President Nieto Offers Mexican Work Permits to Migrants in Caravan
Tumblr media
Nieto’s plan provides temporary ID cards and work permits, housing in local hotels, and medical care for all migrants. It also offers schooling for all children.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has offered work permits and benefits to all members of the migrant caravan who apply for refugee status and stop traveling towards the US-Mexico border.
Currently, an estimated 7,000 migrants are traveling in groups near the town of Arriaga, Chiapas. This caravan includes people fleeing from violence in Central American nations of Honduras and El Salvador, as well as economic migrants who hope to find work in the United States.
After a brief clash with Mexican police, the migrant caravan crossed from Guatemala into the state of Chiapas last weekend. The majority waved their opportunity to apply for asylum at the border and continued traveling into Mexico without documentation.
“Estas en Tu Casa” – “This is Your Home”
President Nieto announced this relief scheme – titled “Estas en Tu Casa”, meaning “This is Your Home” – after US President Donald Trump tweeted his refusal of entry for migrants without papers, and threatened to deploy military to the border.
Full efforts are being made to stop the onslaught of illegal aliens from crossing our Souther Border. People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the U.S. will turn them away. The courts are asking the U.S. to do things that are not doable!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 21, 2018
Nieto’s plan provides temporary ID cards and work permits, housing in local hotels, and medical care for all migrants. It also offers schooling for all children.
However, migrants must disengage from the caravan, and stay in the southern states of Mexico and Oaxaca.
“This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws, and it’s a first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico,” Nieto said.
Media reports suggest that many migrants will not accept this offer, and will continue traveling the remaining 1,000 miles to reach the US.
“It’s a kind offer, but it’s not the plan that we have, to stay here halfway up,” Anna Lisset Velazquez, a Honduran migrant in the caravan, told BBC.
Victims of domestic abuse and gang violence are now excluded from asylum in the US, a change announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in June. Those fleeing poverty and economic struggles are also ineligible for refugee status.
International law does dictate that the migrants can make a case for asylum at the border.
President Nieto has not elaborated what action will be taken with the migrants who refuse his offer and travel beyond the state of Oaxaca. Authorities could choose to detain and deport all those who entered Mexico without applying for a visa or refugee status.

New story in Politics from Time: President Trump Threatened to Turn Back Caravan Migrants If They Don’t Claim Asylum in Mexico. That’s Not Legal
President Donald Trump has said the Central American migrants traveling via caravan should seek asylum in Mexico – and threatened that they will be turned away if they reach the U.S. border.
“People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the U.S. will turn them away. The courts are asking the U.S. to do things that are not doable!” he tweeted Sunday.
But following through on that threat could violate international law, experts say.
As a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, Mexico is obligated to protect people who are outside of their country and afraid to return due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on religion, race, nationality or membership to a particular social or political group.
The United States is also a signatory. And while Mexico is required to offer protection for refugees under international law, migrants have no obligation to request it there. If migrants like those traveling in the caravan that began in Honduras want to seek asylum in the United States, they have the right to try, says Doris Meissner, the director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute
“We do have an obligation as a country under international law to allow people to apply for protection, even if they have come through another country,” Meissner tells TIME.
The exception is if there is a “safe third country” agreement in place.
Under U.S. immigration law, the the United States can deny asylum if a person can be returned to a country where their life or freedom is not in danger, but only if the U.S. has entered into a bilateral or multilateral agreement that codifies the arrangement.
The U.S. and Canada have such an agreement. It says that people must seek refugee status in the first country they arrive in—either the U.S. or Canada—but there are some exceptions for cases of family reunification.
No such agreement exists with Mexico. The Trump Administration began floating a proposal for one last spring, when another caravan of migrants approached the U.S.-Mexico border. Mexico’s Foreign Minister Louis Videgaray reportedly rejected calls for such an agreement when he met with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in July.
Additionally, some argue that Mexico would not meet the standards for such a designation. For one, given high rates of crime, there are credible safety concerns. A survey conducted by Amnesty International found that migrants often are not told about their rights as refugees. And although more attention has been paid to the situation in the U.S., Mexico has been receiving an increased number of asylum claims in recent years.
In 2017, alone, there were 14,596 requests, a 66% jump from the year before, according to the Associated Press.
Those increases have led to backlogs, says Madeleine Tenman, a Mexico researcher for Amnesty International, meaning a process that is supposed to take 45 days can take several months or even a year to get resolved.
“There is no way that the United States could outsource its responsibility to Mexico,” says Tenman.
Over 1,000 of the Central American migrants traveling toward the U.S. border via a massive caravan have already requested asylum in Mexico.
Since the caravan of migrants, most of whom are from the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, reached Mexico late last week, its numbers have reportedly swollen to include more than 7,000 people.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is currently on the ground in Mexico assisting authorities in ensuring that migrants have access to the country’s asylum system.
It is likely that many members of the caravan will not reach the U.S.-Mexico border. A smaller caravan that traversed the country last spring was 1,200-strong at its peak, but dwindled to around 200 once migrants reached the United States.
While some members of the current caravan had already chosen to seek asylum in Mexico or return home and end the arduous journey, others have told journalists on the ground and UNHCR workers that they wish to continue traveling north.
Once they arrive, the U.S. could be taking a legal risk if Trumps orders to bar them from the country.
“If people who are fleeing persecution and violence enter Mexico they need to be provided access to the Mexican asylum system, and those entering the United States need to be provided access to the American asylum system,” says Chris McGrath, a UNHCR spokesperson.

Because he gained immense fame and fortune in sunny California as a founding member of the Eagles, many people are unaware that Glenn Frey is a native Michigander and that he started his career here in his home state.
Glenn was born in Detroit on November 6, 1948. He grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan and started taking piano lessons by the age of five at the insistence of his mother, Nellie. Although Glenn found the lessons dreary, they would lay the groundwork for his eventual career in music.
Frey attended Dondero High School, and it was during his sophomore year that the Beatles arrived on the American music scene. Inspired by the Fab Four's concert in 1964 at Detroit’s old Olympia Stadium on Grand River, Glenn stopped taking piano and picked up the guitar. As soon as he had mastered a few chords, Frey put together his first band. The group, which was comprised of Glenn and four of his classmates, went through a couple of name changes before he finally settled on the Subterraneans, named after the novel by his favorite author, Jack Kerouac.
One of Glenn’s main hangouts during his high school days was the Hideout teen club in Harper Woods, Michigan. Besides being a center for the local music scene, it was also an ideal spot for meeting and picking up girls, especially if you were a good-looking guy who just happened to play guitar and sing in a band. Frey would also make his first important music contacts at the Hideout.
Soon after graduating in 1966, Glenn joined the popular Birmingham, Michigan, folk-rock band called the Four Of Us. Loosely patterned after the Byrds, the Four Of Us had already cut two singles on Dave Leone’s Hideout record label when Glenn joined the band, and they were considered big local stars. One thing that set the Four Of Us apart from their local competition was its stress on vocal harmony. According to band leader Gary Burrows, “Jeff Alborell, Glenn Frey, and I practiced harmony parts every day. That was something our band had that a lotta bands weren’t doing”. It was also a skill that Glenn would put to very good use in his future groups.
It was during this time that Glenn became friends with Bob Seger, who emerged as the Hideout label’s biggest star after his first single, “East Side Story”, became a hit in Detroit. Seger had a good ear for talent and recognized it in Glenn. Bob let Frey sit in on some of his early sessions and had Glenn play maracas and acoustic guitar on two of Seger’s early recordings.
In 1967, Glenn put together the Mushrooms with Gary Burrows’ bother Jeff on keyboards, Bill Barnes and Doug Gunch on guitars, and Larry Mintz on drums. The band scored a major coup by having Bob Seger write both sides of their first single, “Such A Lovely Child” and “Burned” and produce the session as well. Although the record was not a hit, Glenn and the Mushrooms went on Robin Seymour’s Swingin’ Time television show twice to promote it. The Mushrooms also appeared on the Hy Lit Show which was filmed in Cleveland. It was Glenn’s first taste of the big time.
By the end of 1967, Frey had put together another band called the Heavy Metal Kids comprised of Mushroom holdover Jeff Burrows, along with bassist Jeff Alborell from the Four Of Us, Paul Kelcouse on lead guitar, and drummer Lance Dickerson from the band Billy C. & The Sunshine.
During 1968, Bob Seger renamed his band the Bob Seger System and signed with Capitol Records. Glenn was invited to sit in on one of Seger’s early Capitol sessions and ended up singing backup on “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man”, which became Bob Seger’s first national hit, reaching # 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1969.
By the time “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” was climbing the charts, however, Glenn had already left Michigan for California. Supposedly, Frey was inspired by the fact that one of his many girlfriends, Joanie Sliwyn, had decided to go to the West Coast with her sister Alexandria to become singers. Glenn has also stated that he and two of his bandmates from the Heavy Metal Kids were anxious to travel to California because of a Life magazine expose of California’s youth culture and its embrace of the concept of free love and use of psychotropic drugs such as marijuana and L.S.D.
Once in California, Glenn met a fellow Detroit native named John David (J.D.) Souther who was dating Joanie Sliwyn’s sister. Frey and Souther became fast friends and formed a band called the Longbranch Pennywhistle. They signed a recording contract with Amos Records and released a self-title album in 1969. Despite the fact that “Longbranch Pennywhistle” featured stellar musicians such as guitarists James Burton and Ry Cooder, the record was a complete flop. The songwriting partnership that Frey and Souther had established, however, would turn out to be highly successful during the next decade.
Glenn’s next big step on the ladder to success was meeting singer Linda Ronstadt at L.A.’s hip music club, the Troubador, in 1971. Ronstadt, who was on the brink of stardom, invited Frey to play guitar in her touring band. Around the same time, Glenn befriended drummer Don Henley, whose group Shiloh was in the process of breaking up, and brought him in to drum in Linda’s band. When bassist Randy Meisner and guitarist Bernie Leadon were also recruited for the tour, the line-up that would become the Eagles played together for the first time.
After completing the tour with Linda Ronstadt, Frey and the rest of the band signed with Asylum Records. They released their first album, “The Eagles”, in 1972. Their debut was a hit, and it produced three charting singles. Two of them, “Take It Easy” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling” featured Glenn as the lead singer...

ZM Day 4 - Fireplace
There’s a spirit in her fireplace.
Katara isn’t all that concerned about it, honestly. He keeps the fire going constantly with only the smallest need for wood. As long as the fire’s lit, he’s alive. She’s pretty happy with this arrangement.
Sure, he’s over dramatic at times, but he’s her only friend in this town. She’s anonymous for a reason, on the run. She has faith in those working on getting rid of the men chasing her. Her brother wouldn’t fail her.
Anyway, the fireplace calls himself Zuko, and when she practices her bending in the living room he critiques her form. She’s vastly improved under his eye, adapting more traditional forms into more fluid movements. When he had a body, Zuko fought all sorts of benders, so his own form is mixed.
She scoffed at first, since only the Avatar can master all four elements, and she knows the guy so the position is filled.
Zuko, clearly using words he learned from his own teacher, berated her for thinking she had nothing to learn from other elements. After all, if she could entirely hold her own, she wouldn’t be on the run from an earthbender gang out to kidnap the last Souther Waterbender and sell her on the black market.
When retorts that she earned the title of master, he snapped, “That doesn’t mean you’re done learning.”
After that, she shut up and learned.
It took a couple of months for him to stop asking her to break his curse. Not knowing how it got established, she can’t do anything. It’s not like he’s knows either. They keep a nice existence.
Well, until a bunch of cars drive up one night in the middle of winter.
“Climb the chimmny.”
“What.”
“There’s a bunch of snow on the roof, and I can keep a fire high enough to mask your escape. I know this chimmny; I live here. There’s footholds. So climb. Your brother has all the stuff you care about anyway.”
She hesitated only a second, until tires screeched to a stop. She stepped over the fire - which lowered itself for her before roaring up, leaning forward both to obscure view and keep from burning up her oxygen.
With a prayer to Tui and La for her safety and his freedom without her, Katara climbs.
The door busts open with a yell and crash as she hoists herself out of the chimmny. Her fireplace shouts, playing the angry god. “Who dares disturb my lair?” Fire roars.
She’s crouched low, moving along the highest point, keeping out of sight, when the smoke stops.
“No.”
The snow on her roof hardens to ice. She plants her feet on either side of the roof and slices her hands down, angry, movements she’s seen Toph do a thousand times. The sheets of ice fly off the roof on both sides, cutting into the cars.
There’s a strangled cry, so she took someone out. The men pour out of her house, both doors, but the moon is high. Her arms lift up all the snow from her backyard, car wreckage and mooks included, and launch them over her roof onto her enemies out front.
She is the Ocean, the Moon, their rage and hunger. The Ocean, the Moon, they are - until you turn your back on them, until you anger them.
The men below, they’re earthbenders, steady, as long as the ground beneath them is.
She rips the snow out from under them all, then ices over them all.
“You are why I can’t sleep easy. You are why I have to do without all I love.” Another layer of ice rushes over to hold them down even more. “You’ll stay here while my brother and his army of authorities rush here. If someone’s dead tonight, it is on you, and I will never forget and forgive.”
After a cascade of snow helps her off the roof, she leaves her burner phone on the dining table, calling her brother.
He picks up, but she doesn’t answer. She hears him frantically yelling her name and then barking orders, but she’s crouched in ashes, bent over a fireplace. Kindling in her hand, she sifts through the grey, searching, hoping for one ember that held on.
There.
She places a few small bits of kindling around it, trying not to smother it, and breathes on the ember. “Catch.”
The ember flares, bright, and then dies.
“You idiot. I didn’t ask you to burn out for me.”
There’s a thump outside that has to be Appa landing, and her brother’s exclamation, and-
“It was a gift freely given.”
There’s a face in the ashes, a face she thinks she’s seen in flames before.
“I die on my own terms. I wasn’t going to make it past you, anyways, I don’t think. You made a dying fire mean something.”
The face starts to fade and on instinct she reaches forward, tears wrapped around her hand glowing with the Moon’s promise of healing.
She touches his left eye -
-
- an explosion of white -
-
- the sensation of flying -
-
- yelling -
-
“Katara! A dude just appeared in your fireplace!”
“Zuko,” she breathes.

SEATAC, Wash. | The Latest: Family: Man who took plan was warm, kind, gentle

SEATAC, Wash. | The Latest: Family: Man who took plan was warm, kind, gentle
SEATAC, Wash.  — The Latest on a plane stolen from Sea-Tac International Airport in Washington state (all times local): 7:55 p.m.
The family of a man who authorities say stole an airplane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and later crashed it called him a faithful husband, loving son and good friend.
In a statement, the family says Richard Russell, whose nickname was “Beebo,” was warm, kind and gentle. They say says this is a complete shock.
Russell is presumed dead. Authorities don’t know why he took the plane, but he could be heard on audio recordings telling air traffic controllers that he is “just a broken guy.” His family says it’s clear he didn’t mean to harm anyone.
7:25 p.m. The man authorities say stole an airplane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and later crashed it was an outgoing star athlete at an Alaska high school.
Coaches at Wasilla High School, where Richard Russell was a football player, wrestler and discus thrower, told the Anchorage Daily News they are shocked at the news.
Gary Howell, track and field coach, says Russell was the kind of kid you want on your team. He remembered him as a funny guy who also had a smile and a joke and was a great team player.
Wasilla wrestling coach Shawn Hayes says Russell was respectful and a good kid.
Authorities believe Russell was killed when the aircraft crashed into a small island southwest of Seattle. ___
2:41 p.m. The man who stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane from Sea-Tac International Airport was Richard Russell, a U.S. official briefed on the matter told The Associated Press.
The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Authorities on Saturday said a 29-year-old man used a machine called a pushback tractor to first maneuver the aircraft so he could board and then take off Friday evening. He was presumably killed about an hour later when the aircraft crashed into a small island southwest of Seattle.
The man could be heard on audio recordings telling air traffic controllers that he is “just a broken guy.” An air traffic controller called the man “Rich,” and tried to convince the man to land the airplane.
Russell went by “Beebo” on social media, and on his Facebook page, which had limited public access. He said he was from Wasilla, Alaska, and lived in Sumner, Washington, and was married in 2012. In a humorous YouTube video he posted last year, he talked about his job and included videos and photos of his various travels. “I lift a lot of bags. Like a lot of bags. So many bags,” he said. —Mike Balsamo, Associated Press ___
11:45 a.m. Authorities say the man who stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane from Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle was a 3.5-year Horizon employee and had clearance to be among aircraft. Authorities on Saturday also say the 29-year-old man used a machine called a pushback tractor to first maneuver the aircraft so he could board and then take off Friday evening.
The man didn’t have a pilot’s license, and authorities say it’s unclear how he attained the skills to do loops in the aircraft before crashing about an hour after taking off into a small island in the Puget Sound. Authorities say the man went through various background checks to get clearance to be in the secured area. ___
9:45 a.m. Federal investigators say a stolen Horizon Air turboprop plane broke into many pieces when it crashed into an area of thick brush on a small island in the Puget Sound.
But investigators said Saturday they still anticipate they will be able to recover data recorders from the aircraft.
Debra Eckrote, a regional chief with the National Transportation Safety Board, says the wings are off the plane and the fuselage is upside down.
Officials say an airline employee stole the empty plane and took off from Sea-Tac International Airport on Friday night.
Eckrote said it was very fortunate that the plane crashed in a relatively unpopulated island.
She believes that once NTSB investigators reach the crash site they’ll be able to find the cockpit voice recorder and the plane’s data recorder. ___
9:30 a.m. A transportation security expert says a man who stole a plane from Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle likely had some pilot training, and military craft that pursued him possibly prevented a tragedy.
Erroll Southers says Saturday that the unidentified man represents one of the greatest threats to aviation by being an insider cleared to have access to aircraft. Southers is director of homegrown violent extremism studies at the University of Southern California.
Officials say an airline employee stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane and took off from the airport Friday night. Video shows him doing large loops and other dangerous maneuvers. He was chased by military jets before crashing into an island in the Puget Sound.
Southers says that if the man knew how to do loops he likely had the skills to target people on the ground. ___
5:30 a.m. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the man who stole a plane from Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle before crashing it into a small, nearby island.
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Saturday morning Trump is monitoring the situation. He’s currently at his New Jersey golf club. She commended the response effort for its “swift action” and public safety protection.
Officials say an airline employee stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane and took off from the airport Friday night. Video shows him doing large loops and other dangerous maneuvers. He was chased by military jets before crashing into an island in the Puget Sound. His identity and condition are unknown.
A sheriff’s department spokesman said the man may have been suicidal but there was no terrorism connection. ___
12:16 a.m. Airline officials say the man who stole a plane from Sea-Tac International Airport is believed to be a ground service agent. Authorities initially said the man was a mechanic but Alaska Airlines later said he was an employee who helps direct aircraft to gates and de-ice planes.
Officials say the “suicidal” airline employee stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane and took off from Sea-Tac Friday night before crashing into a small island.
Authorities say there is no connection to terrorism and they do not believe anyone else was on the plane. ___
11:10 p.m. An airline mechanic who stole a Horizon Air plane from a Seattle airport told air traffic controllers that he was a “broken guy” but also joked about whether the airline would hire him as a pilot if he landed safely.
The man, who was addressed as “Rich” in audio recordings with air traffic controllers, said he didn’t want to land at a nearby military base.
He told them, “Those guys will rough me up if I try and land there.” During another part of the exchange, the man said he was concerned he was going to run low on fuel.
Later, he said he’s “got a lot of people that care about me.” He said he didn’t want to disappoint them but that he was “just a broken guy, got a dew screws loose, I guess.” ___
10:15 p.m. Sheriff’s officials say a man who stole an Alaska Airlines plane from an airport in Washington state was “suicidal” and there is no connection to terrorism.
Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, says on Twitter Friday night that a 29-year-old airline mechanic stole the Horizon Air Q400 from Sea-Tac International Airport. Witnesses reported seeing the plane being chased by military aircraft before it crashed near Ketron Island. There were no passengers aboard.
The sheriff’s department said they were working to conduct a background investigation on the man, whose name was not immediately released.
The man could be heard on audio recordings telling air traffic controllers that he’s “got a lot of people that care about me” and that he is “just a broken guy.” ___
9:50 p.m. Officials at Sea-Tac International Airport say an Alaska Airlines plane that was stolen by an airline employee and has crashed in Washington state.
Airport officials say in a tweet Friday night that an airline employee “conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers.”
Witnesses reported seeing the plane being chased by military aircraft near the airport.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter that preliminary information suggested that a mechanic had stolen the aircraft. The tweet said the crash may have been caused by the mechanic “doing stunts in air or lack of flying skills.”
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the agency was responding to a report of a smoke plume and possible plane crash. Petty Officer Ali Flockerzi said a 45-foot vessel was headed to the scene. ___
9:37 p.m. Alaska Airlines says there was an “unauthorized take-off” of an airplane and witnesses reported a jet being chased by military planes near Sea-Tac International Airport in Washington state.
The airline tells The Associated Press that the plane was a Horizon Air Q400 and it believed no passengers were on board.
No other information was immediately available. Horizon Air is part of Alaska Air Group and flies shorter routes throughout the U.S. West.
The Q400 ix a turboprop aircraft with 76 seats.

Enjoy our “Reflections” post — one of many vignettes and stories featuring memories of days gone by. This installment is from Brent Coleman of Hamilton, Mississippi, as seen in “The Oxford So & So.”
If you would like to contribute your own Reflections story, send it, along with photos, to [email protected].
1920s Mississippi Streets. Courtesy of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
After having left the state of Mississippi many years ago, her birthplace and the place she loved, the Southern Lady returned. She came back to the small community known as Gattman, Mississippi where she had lived throughout her childhood. She went to and graduated from Sulligent High School in Sulligent, Alabama, and later going on to Mississippi State University for a BA Degree, University of Mississippi for a Master’s and back to Mississippi State University for a Doctorate Degree. But it was there in Gattman where the story began.
Each summer, after age seven, she would go to Prairie, Mississippi to spend some time with her Uncle John Oldham and his wife Nettie, who both lived and worked on a plantation. Here is where this writer enters the story of the Souther Lady from Mississippi. To my surprise I received an email from a Mr. Saverio Gaudiano after my name had caught his attention from the website I had started on the Gulf Ordnance Plant in Prairie. Mr. Gaudiano asked if I would assist Dr. Jo Miller if she came to the Aberdeen/Prairie part of Mississippi. Of course I sent an email stating that I would. He further stated that Dr. Jo Miller was doing some research on her aunt and uncle who had raised an African American child during the 1920s, which was during the latter part of the days of the plantations. Mr. Guadiano had worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Houston, Texas. His resume was beyond impressive. Being a lawman I could identify with the word “Space” as in Program, because that was all I sometimes had between me and the “wrongdoer.”
Last May I received an email pertaining to the time and place Jo Miller would be arriving in Aberdeen. Jo was accompanied by a friend, Jeanie Pullen, also a retired employee of NASA, in Houston. Jo had come with one thing in mind … to search for information on Ezell Jefferson, the main character of her book. She knew little about her main character’s life up to now, except that on a cold, winter morning sometime in the 1920s her uncle found a newborn baby. This had happened when her Uncle John was out making his rounds of the plantation, as he did every day.
“A faint noise was coming from a tenant house and sounded little like a baby crying,” Uncle John said. “That’s an odd sound,” he thought, “I never heard a baby sound quite like that before; it sounds like something is drastically wrong. I’d better look into this.”
So uncle John decided to go check on that sound. He got off Big Bend, his horse, and went over to the house and knocked on the door. He knocked two or three times and still there was no answer. Then Uncle John threw his weight against the wooden door and it gave. Pushing the door open, he walked in. To his surprise, there was a very small baby with a thin blanket over it, the mother’s coat, sweater, and the rest of her closes stuffed around it. The baby was crying as loudly as it could, but hardly making a noise because it was so weak, cold and hungry.
The mother had died sometime during the weekend and the baby was left alone during the dark, cold days and nights with little to keep him warm and, of course after the mother died, no more milk to drink. However, he survived. Uncle John said he almost lost his breakfast when he finally allowed himself to look at the mother; she had put every last semblance of anything she had that contained any warmth over the baby, and there she lay, looking like a human block of ice. “Oh my God!” he thought, “How she must have loved that baby. Please Lord, let her know her baby lived.”
With misty tears in his eyes, John reached down to pick up the little baby, a little boy baby. Shivering as he made his way to the door, he paused for a second to wonder just how much this event would affect the small one’s psych. Would his little mid “register” any of this, or would it be reflected somehow in his emotions and/or behavior. “I don’t think he’ll remember anything about this, but I don’t see how it could keep from having some effect on him at sometime during his life,” John thought. He took this little baby to his home, to his wife, hoping that she would accept this child and love him as he had already started to do. Unknown to John, he and his wife, Nettie, would be the ones to bring up this child. They would take the responsibility of raising this little baby into a man, as if he were their own.
Jo had done her homework well and had arrived with names, addresses, and telephone numbers of people to contact and of places to go for additional research. She was a lady who had arrived with one thing in mind as her paramount goal, and that was to gather new, relevant information on the life and times of Ezell Jefferson. She was on a journey with a mission not to be denied. In her quest nothing was by chance, no obstacle, large or small was allowed to stand in the way of her search. Although she brought with her files of various degrees of significance about the major events in Ezell’s life, she still wanted information from here, from Jefferson Ezell’s hometown and from his relatives and his friends.
The information from around this area – around Prairie and Aberdeen – Jo stated, would be different from what she had already gathered. Here, it would be from the people who really knew Ezell. This was his “stomping ground,” his home, his people, his joys and his hardships. It was the place where he grew up, where he played and toiled, married and fathered children, where he lived and where he died. According to Jo, having this additional information from Ezell’s hometown would allow her to contrast, compare and analyze and therefore do a better job of allowing the real Ezell to be presented in her book. This was vitally important to Jo because the book might be fiction, but the characters in the book were not.
Another thing of vital importance to Jo was to find the place where Ezell was buried. The obituary she had didn’t specify the place but did mention the newspaper in Columbus. Jo and her friend Jeanie spent the next day searching for Ezell’s obituary in the “Columbus Dispatch” and archives of the library in Columbus where the newspaper was then housed. She found it, and just as she thought it might, it had an obituary that clearly stated where the burial site was.
Ezell was buried in Artesia, Mississippi in a little church cemetery. When Jo and Jeanie arrived at the church the following day they saw numerous graves in the church yard, but quite a few of them were unreadable because of their age, erosion, and perhaps other factors. However, they read all of the names on all that were readable and took note of the location of the rest, finally coming to the conclusion that Ezell was in an unmarked grave. Through the efforts of Lowndes County Sheriff Mark Miley, family members, and the Reverend Nathaniel Best, the Saint Matthew Church Pastor, the gravesite was located and pointed out to me by Rev. Best. Now there is a nice new headstone there with a message from Earth on it.
Now Jo Miller, originally of Gattman, Mississippi, is the author of the forthcoming book about her friend Ezell. The title of the book is “Unlikely Brothers, a Somewhat True Story.” I anxiously await the publication of this book written by this Southern Lady From Mississippi who is 85 years of age. She is determined this little black baby boy, saved by the Grace of God with the hands and heart of a white man, be known, honored and remembered as a fellow Mississippian.
